Connect Downtown Johnson City Announces The Return Of D.I.Y. Oktoberfest Connect Downtown Johnson City is excited to announce the return of DIY Oktoberfest held September 17 – October 3 at participating downtown pubs/ breweries. DIY Oktoberfest is a “do it yourself” downtown pub crawl held over the duration of 16 days.

During DIY Oktoberfest, participants visit any of the 13 participating bars/pubs, collect a DIY Oktoberfest postcard, order a beverage, and receive a stamp at each visited location. (Be sure to hold on to your postcard along the way). Participants will then turn in their postcard at the last location of their choice, by October 3rd. Completed postcards (a minimum of 6 stamps) at the end of the event will be collected and entered

into raffle prizes from downtown merchants!

four times. Throughout the second half of the 20th century, a whole slew of companies and individuals tried to resurrect Indian Motorcycles.

With such a long bad-luck streak, it’s surprising that so many groups would try and revive it. The reasons why so many different people have tried to bring Indian back can be summed up in one word, legacy. Indian Motorcycles are one of the most iconic American motorcycle brands. The original Indian Motorcycle Company (you read that right) was founded 119 years ago.

Victory Motorcycles was an American motorcycle manufacturer with its final assembly facility in Spirit Lake, Dickinson County, northwestern Iowa, United States. It began production of its vehicles in 1998 and began winding down operations in January 2017 to be succeeded by the revived traditional American motorcycle brand Indian, which is (since 2011) owned by parent company Polaris Industries.

Honda was founded in the late 1940s as Japan struggled to rebuild following the second World War. Company founder Soichiro Honda first began manufacturing piston rings before turning his attention to inexpensive motorcycles. Mr. Honda always had a passion for engineering, and this became evident by the wild sales success of his motorcycles in the 1960s and by competing head-to-head against the world’s best on racetracks.

Today, Honda is a juggernaut, offering class-leading machines in most every category.

BMW's motorcycle history began in 1921 when the company commenced manufacturing engines for other companies. Over the Labor Day weekend my Mom and Dad came down to visit Nashville for their twice yearly pilgrimage. One evening after Dad was long back at the hotel and asleep, my Mother and I were enjoying some quality time at a restaurant and as she tends to unintentionally do after a couple hours of fun, she decided to flip the conversation to doom, gloom and worry. (I don’t think my Mother is the only one who suffers from this affliction, but it’s a buzzkill nonetheless.) This particular point of contention that is keeping her up at night is the fear that I might “die alone” and how her and my Father are “praying I meet someone so they can die peacefully and know there’ll be someone to take care of me.”

Apparently we’re all on the verge of death and I - the grown woman who has lived and cared solely for herself since the age of 18- am desperately in need of a caretaker.

Sigh.

I don’t know about you but I’m really not trying to take anybody with me when I go. When you hear about people dying as a group it’s never good news; mass shootings, 10-car-pileups, bombings…when you think about it that way, the alternative of dying alone sounds pretty danged preferable. Also, I’m really vain about my looks, so the last thing I want when I’m literally at my worst is the people I care most about seeing me in that shape. If I’m dead I can’t even suck in my gut! I’ll happily take the option of letting strangers change my bed-pan and retaining my deathbed dignity over a marriage certificate and a blip in the obituary that contains the words “survived by her loving husband.”

In all seriousness, I understand my Mother’s well-intentioned but ill-delivered sentiments. As my parents, of course they want to see me being protected and loved correctly by someone long after they’re gone. It would give them peace of mind to know I’m not out here doing it all by my lonesome.

But what they don’t understand, as people who have been together for over 45 years, is that I’m not scared to do it on my own because I already know I can. What I’m petrified of is wasting more of my increasingly short time on this Earth on people who don’t love, value and respect me in return, and if the trade-off for that is paying my own bills and sleeping alone every night til I meet my maker, that’s perfectly fine with me.

Life is precious and brief; regardless of who you spend it with, it’s still yours and yours alone to live. It’s far more courageous to be a whole person on your own than to be a lost soul with a marriage certificate. I hope I do find that person who can love me correctly into my twilight years, but until then, I hope my parents can rest a little easier knowing they raised a strong woman who conquers her fears and respects herself enough not to settle for less than she deserves out of loneliness.

Easing Mom’s Fears

The classic film "Jaws" is considered by film historians to be the first summer blockbuster in the history of cinema. Translation: sold out showings, massive merchandising, uber fans and sequels. The film was based on the 1974 Peter Benchely novel of the same name, and hit theatres in the summer of 1975. I was one of the many curious and excited fans who saw the movie that summer, which is quite amazing since I am only 30 (LOL!). The impact of this film on Hollywood was amazing, and summer became the time when "event" movies became as much a part of summer as did vacations, as "Star Wars" was soon to follow. So it was with much excitement that I learned the film was being re-released to theaters in the 3D format.

I was able to attend the film with some friends one of whom had never seen the film on the big screen, and one who had never SEEN it before.

loved the big screen experience and the other really enjoyed the film in general. Of course most of us know the movie follows Amity Island police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) as he attempts to prepare the island for the invading tourists coming to celebrate the 4th of July.

Of course something else is invading the island after a girl is attacked while swimming one night while attending a beach party. When Brody discovers the remains of the unfortunate swimmer, he realizes the beach must be closed, but is met with strong resistance by local business owners and the town's unscruplious mayor. In a moment of utter stupidity the mayor attempts to convince Brody and the coroner the girl was killed in a boating accident.

Brody is still extremely worried and frightened for the vacationers, and his concerns come to fruition when a boy is attacked and killed in the view of a crowded beach. This leads to a bounty being placed on the shark, and the first appearance of professional shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw). Also showing up to investigate is marine biologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), who often clashes with Quint.

The local fishermen and other reckless men set out to sea in an attempt to catch the shark for the huge bounty. When one fisherman catches a tiger shark, the locals feel the killer shark is now dead. Not so fast. After Brody and Hooper find another corpse that has been attacked

by a shark, their attempts to close the beaches fail again thanks to the stubborn mayor.

After another shark attack, this time in a lagoon, the mayor finally agreed to hire Quint to track down the shark, and he is joined by Hooper and Brody. Their adventures aboard a small boat are exciting and feature the classic line "we're going to need a bigger boat" after seeing the great white shark for the first time. This was director Steven Spielberg's second feature film, and he nearly backed out of the project, and movie fans everywhere should be grateful he did not, as we probably wouldn't have the classic film loved by so many. One of the best aspects of the film, is how Speilberg decided to film from the sharks pov, due to issues with the mechanical shark used in the film. This technique actually made the shark seem even more terrifying, an unseen danger. The film has the ever

familiar soundtrack composed

by John Williams, who would create so many famous film soundtracks in the coming years, and who early in his career is credited as Johnny Willimas for composing the themes for the 1960's television show "Lost in Space". Many fans may not realize actor Richard Dreyfuss stated the following: "We started the film without a script, without a cast and without a shark".

The aforementioned is quite shocking considering how this film became a classic of American cinema. If there is ever another opportunity to see "Jaws" on the big screen and in 3D, run to the theater, and you will feel like you are in the water and in the middle of cinema history. (Rated PG)

The 1970s were an interesting time for “Star Trek.” The TV series ended in June 1969 after three years on NBC where it struggled for ratings. The show’s devoted fanbase had successfully lobbied NBC for a third year after they canceled the show in 1968, but this time it was finally over.

“Star Trek” soon entered syndication, the long-standing practice of offering reruns of network TV shows to local stations to air at their choosing.

The advent of computer effects meant it was easy and affordable to fix certain shots and put in things that couldn’t be done due to cost and time. The Director’s Edition was received with great praise and Wise was at long last happy with the movie. Though the director would sadly pass away in 2005, it was felt that The Director’s Edition was an improvement, but it still wasn’t quite the full cinematic experience.

That is, until this past April. The team that worked with Wise 22 years ago

came back to the film to create a top to bottom, intensive restoration of his vision in 4K Ultra High Definition resolution. Every single element of 35mm film related to the movie was located and scanned in 4K resolution.

Using computers, soft effects shots made with an optical printer were now able to be combined digitally from their 35mm negatives. Giving much sharper clarity and definition.

The most astounding thing about this new version of Wise’s vision is that those 22-year-old CGI computer files still existed. Using people far smarter than I, those files were imported to modern graphics computers and rerendered into 4K. The results premiered last April on Paramount+, the streaming service, and last week were released to home video on UHD Blu-ray. The results are truly staggering, and whereas 20 years ago it felt like a vision of what Robert Wise always had in mind, it now feels, at long last, like a

completed movie.

It’s exciting, both as someone very concerned about film preservation and restoration and as someone who although I don’t think of myself as a Trekkie, I do enjoy “Star Trek” and have a model of the Enterprise on my desk.

It’s also a great way to honor a truly great director, Wise after all was behind both “West Side Story” and “The Sound of Music,” by giving his vision a truly completed form for the first time.

Thought I watched the film on Paramount Plus in April, I’m very excited to get my hands on the UHD blu-ray of the movie. Why? Because streaming 4K video is a bit throttled compared to a disc. Streaming online at an average bitrate of 36 megabits per second to a UHD blu-ray’s 98 megabits per second. Call me old fashioned, but it’s a win for physical media. See you next week.

Star Trek: The Director’s Edition
