I hope everyone is having a great September so far. Hopefully you got the chance to attend the Rhythm and Roots Festival. What a great way to enjoy local music! I don’t know about you but music speaks to my soul. Whatever speaks to your soul, I hope you are enjoying that.

With such a long bad-luck streak, it’s surprising that so many groups would try and revive it. The reasons why so many different people have tried to bring Indian back can be summed up in one word, legacy. Indian Motorcycles are one of the most iconic American motorcycle brands. The original Indian Motorcycle Company (you read that right) was founded 119 years ago.

Victory Motorcycles was an American motorcycle manufacturer with its final assembly facility in Spirit Lake, Dickinson County, northwestern Iowa, United States. It began production of its vehicles in 1998 and began winding down operations in January 2017 to be succeeded by the revived traditional American motorcycle brand Indian, which is (since 2011) owned by parent company Polaris Industries.

Honda was founded in the late 1940s as Japan struggled to rebuild following the second World War. Company founder Soichiro Honda first began manufacturing piston rings before turning his attention to inexpensive motorcycles. The 3rd Annual Hoppy Possum: Southern Brewers Cup is taking place September 24th at TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City, TN. The mission of Hoppy Possum is to showcase homebrew culture and creativity to craft beer lovers from near and far. Having recently added Southwest Virginia to my territory route for work, I spent the first part of this week becoming acquainted with my longtime not-so-distant neighbors across the border. As a born and raised Tri-Cities gal, it actually was a surprise to me just how little time I’ve spent on the other side of the street, but was very pleased to discover some old favorites as well as some of the newer additions!

Being the location I spent the bulk of my time, The Bristol Hotel seems like a logical place to start. Beautifully styled from the front entryway all the way to the rooftop bar Lumac, I was thoroughly impressed with the amenities and accommodations at this boutique hotel, located conveniently adjacent to the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. (While most instantly associate Nashville with country music, it was actually the Bristol Sessions of 1927 that sparked the “big bang of country music.” Make sure to carve out time to tour this affiliate of the Smithsonian to gain a thorough understanding of the deep musical roots of Appalachia.)

I enjoyed several delicious meals and drinks during my 4 day stay at the hotel, but my top pick has to be the grilled lamb chops with a side of brussels sprouts at Vivian’s Table downstairs. Do yourself a favor and spring for a wine from the bottle list, as they carry Barboursville Vineyards Cab Franc and it’s the perfect complement to the gamey, grilled meat.

I was surprised to see another new-ish boutique hotel in downtown Bristol, The Sessions having seemingly sprung up overnight. While I didn’t get to experience the interior rooms firsthand, the spa services, rooftop and outdoor mini amphitheater look incredible!

And being familiar with the menu at Southern Craft’s Johnson City location, I know the food is not to be missed as well. It’s looking like I’ll be giving this place a try on my next work trip at the end of the month.

For something a bit off the beaten path of downtown Bristol, I ventured out to Abingdon Vineyards. Nestled off of winding, mountain roads and accessible by boat off South Holston Lake, I was in heaven at this quiet cove.

Of course with my deep love of wine, this was a no-brainer for me, but another unexpected added bonus was the lack of cell service.

As someone who is attached to 24/7 work emails, texts and phone calls, being completely off the grid while enjoying locally grown grape varietals felt like vacation, if only for an hour or so. (I was there on business after all.) I had a wonderful time getting to know the owner, Loren Gardner, and was fascinated by his family’s rich Napa Valley history and their journey to our little neck of the woods. With harvest having just begun, I’m already looking forward to seeing what’s new on my next visit.

Along the same line as Abingdon Vineyard, I was made aware of Nicewonder Farm. While I didn’t have time to fit it into this trip, I have every intention of coming up early to at least enjoy the tasting

room in a few weeks, if not just making a mini vacation out of it and booking a stay in one of their yurts. Their fine dining venture, Hickory, looks amazing and with over 450 acres to play, stay and imbibe, this resort destination is a much needed dash of luxury to our mountain home.

It seems there’s no shortage of entertainment in the Bristol and Abingdon area as well. With the annual Rhythm & Roots festival bringing over 60,000 people to enjoy the likes of Tanya Tucker and Roseanne Cash this weekend alone, Bristol seems to be holding fast to its reputation for country music royalty. The newly designed marquee of the Cameo Theatre also boasted a slew of upcoming famous names like Blues Traveler which I tucked into the back of my mind for future travel scheduling. But even if you don’t recognize the names, I highly recommend checking out a lesser known act on a whim.

Even here in Nashville, some of the best talents are still relatively undiscovered, and you never know who might be the next rising star. It’s always cool to be able to say “I knew them when,” and Bristol is just the town for that.

There have been many new bars, restaurants and retail spaces added to Southwest VA since my move 4 years ago, and even more under construction as we speak. I am so excited to continue exploring this side of the Tri on my more frequent visits to the area.

It goes to show you can still be a stranger amongst the old familiar, and taking even a small step out of your comfort zone can yield high rewards. I highly recommend joining me in my exploration!

Cheryl Ladd will forever be remembered as one of Charlie's Angels, and despite other roles, to me she will always be Kris Munroe, the younger sister of Farrah Fawcett's character Jill Munroe.

Cheryl is back in the streaming film "A Cowgirl's Song" in which she plays a grandmother to two teen sisters Hailey (Savannah Lee May) and Candice (Rachel Cannon). After the sisters father is arrested for a crime he didn't commit, the sisters go to live with their grandmother Erin (Ladd), a famous country singer who has retired from the world of performing after the tragic death of her husband in a car accident.

Hailey is an aspiring country singer who wants to follow in her grandmother's footsteps, but suffers from extreme stage fright. Her sister Brooke was a barrel racer until she was injured in said car accident. The

movie follows the two girls as one struggles to overcome her stage fright and the other attempts to realize the accident which left her unable to barrel race any longer, may not be an end all for her. While the girls are living with their grandmother they convince her to come out of retirement in order to perform a concert to raise money for their father's bail money. Erin agrees to come out of retirement, and before she is to perform, she is helping Hailey fight her stage fright so she can perform on her own after getting assistance from a young manager who wants to make the budding singer famous.

Once Erin's concert takes place, the money is finally raised, but later it's revealed there has been a betrayal by two guys close to Hailey. Erin and her granddaughters are not deterred and attempt to get the lost money back.

Will they succeed? That's up to you as the viewer to find out, but since this is an uplifting family film, you probably already know the answer. Ladd is one of the executive producers of the film, and despite her fame, allows the young actors in the film to shine. This film is refreshing in the fact there is no violence, no cursing, and no bullying. The music in the film is typical of this genre and does give Ladd

the opportunity to sing, as some may not realize she did release some albums in the late 1970's and early 1980's. The actors playing the teens are all fine, and the actors playing potential love interests, Dodge Prince and Jared Trevino are well cast for their respective roles. If you desire a sweet film full of love and music that will

provide a pleasant reprise from the often chaotic world, then I suggest a viewing of "A Cowgirl's Song". After all, it's also time well spent with a former member of "Charlie's Angels"! Now streaming of various outlets including Netflix and YouTube.

Two weeks ago a new video game collection was released that is straightforwardly aimed at a target demographic I am a member of. Depressed Elder Millennials. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection” brings together an impressive mix of 13 video games that came out in the late ‘80s through the mid-'90s.

As far as I can tell every arcade and console version of a game with the hero in a half shell is included.

The game has the standards of every good pizzeria of my childhood, the classic Ninja Turtle arcade game and its sequel, the truly wonderful “Turtles in Time.” It’s one thing to be able to play these two games I begged quarters from my parents for, but it also includes the NES port of the former and the SNES port of the latter. On top of the games themselves, there is even an archive of material to spend hours looking at. Music from every game, design documents, box art, game manuals, screens from the various TMNT cartoons, and even an archive on advertising for the games.

The cherry on top is the ability to take those four-player arcade beat-em-ups online and engage in multiplier with other nostalgic turtle fans across the globe.

“I’ll just spend a few minutes playing Turtles in Time,” I told myself the other night when I was first exploring the collection. Next thing I knew I

was in my little bubble where I was again a happy sevenyear-old, smelling the aroma of pizza from Deano’s pizza as I worked my way through smashing the foot with Michelangelo’s nunchucks. It didn’t help that as I was falling deeply in love with many of these games I hadn’t played in close to 30 years, I was forgetting to do other things with my actual life.

“Hmm, I have some time to kill. I’ll just spend 15 minutes playing Black From The Sewers for the game boy.” Next thing I knew I had a text on my phone asking where I was, almost 80 minutes had gone by. I had lost all track of time. I wasn’t just playing my Nintendo Switch, I was again sitting on a big cozy couch focused solely on the

patterns appearing on a game boy screen.

It’s both a testament to my nostalgia and how well “The Cowabunga Collection” is put together that caused me to sink so much time without realizing into playing it. It’s easily the best collection of retro games I’ve ever played and it helps that a lot of the games are still as much fun as I remember and in some cases as frustratingly hard as I remember—looking at you Nintendo TMNT game!

But that’s all I can say about it.

Not as I’m about to quit this so I can go kick Shredder again.
