ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES

Universities have diverse English language requirements but commonly require international pupils who are nonnative English speakers to pass a language placement test such as IELTS (International English Language Testing System). There are other approved exams, but IELTS is probably still the most widely recognised. It comprises four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) all carrying the same mark weighting. It is an exam that can be taken anytime throughout the year. The test is graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with most universities insisting on an average of 7, although some degree courses require a 7 in all four disciplines. Pupils arrange to take the test at a time and place of their choosing but we can help to advise and, by arrangement with individual pupils, oversee elements of their preparation for IELTS.
