series of cropped elevations The following images are a small selection of the work I have done while employed during my summers as a college student. Most of the work shown is from my last two summers spent at Morris Adjmi Architects, a small renovation job for a family friend’s new kitchen, and the design of a built portable greenhouse. The e levations shown above are an iteration from the design phase of a large housing project that I worked on at Morris Adjmi.

Two of the projects are confidential and require cropped images and I cannot disclose the client or location.

I spent most of my time during the summer of 2019 working on a large housing project that is currently confidential. I was on a team that alternated between 2 and 3 architects including me. When I joined the project, it was in early schematic design and I worked on designing and modeling facade designs for both the low rise and the tower in sketches and in Rhino. I did massing organizations in Revit, constructed physical models, assembled material palettes and created images for the client presentations in Photoshop.

These are cropped images of the work I would produce quickly as iterative examples for presentations to the clients and principal architect.

These are some of the maisonette options I provided for another large housing project.

I had previously worked on this project in 2018 in a similar design capacity to my wo rk on the previous project, massing and facade design. It was nearing its final CD phase and we had to quickly iterate on this area.

I spe nt a large  amount of time working on the Revit plans for this project titled 85       Jay St. located in New York, in 2018 especially. I would update redlined drawings and create new  sheets of details. In 2019 I helped update the drawings while Santa     Clara was on hold. 

This project was a wonderful opportunity thanks to Claudia Baez. Her daughter bought a new apartment in Brooklyn and the architect they had supervising the renovations wasn’t up to their standards so she asked me to take a look at the house and hired me to renovate the kitchen. I had conversations with her and her daughter over a couple of weeks and these were some of the final drawings I provided to them. While I was away at school, we continued an email chain about materials and found some lovely options for the new kitchen.

The Baum Greenhouse or the Portable Greenhouse is a gem of a project made in conjunction with artist, sculptor, and carpenter Jeb ah Baum. The project is the product of the simple desire to have a portable greenhouse to grow all sorts of foods and plants within. The resources were simple an iron frame with wheels attached, a collection of old windows of varying size, and lots of time and wood from Jebah’s shop in Gardiner, New York. In two short weeks, the greenhouse was designed, built, and full of seeds that quickly begun to sprout.

“Kindred Homes” is made up of spaces designed to suggest communal interactions and extraordinary amounts of sharing through its attention to raising the next generation to be more comfortable being open and informed. The project fosters a childhood full of sharing and interaction, as well as an opportunity for parents to re-think their priorities and allocations of energies. It pushes adults to reconnect with their youthful hearts and co-live in a home with a diverse selection of families.

For this competition I assembled a team of my colleagues from Syracuse University who I had past experience working alongside, and during the quarantine we experienced our first competition. It was a difficult transition, not only becuase we were learning how to work collaboratively on a non-academic project, but a lso because the pandemic had just hit and we had to learn how to design effectively thorugh zoom meetings.

A treehouse that lets you spin walls, step into the treetops, bring the forest into your room, and make your imagination run wild. The secret game of movable walls, shifting planes, and climbing ladders make your home into a game of exploration and mystery. Subdividing a cylinder into a series of connected modular rooms allows walls to move as radii or along the track circumference revealing a space to the outdoors with unhindered access or complete closure from unfriendly elements. The shifting walls allow various residents to continuously redefine their experience by editing their space. Even adults can become a child again as they spin a pirate wheel to reveal a drawbridge entrance ascending from a wall floating above. The ground module allows you to not only climb up a tree but also inside it. The tree trunk is replaced by a morphic sauna that allows you to relax at the base pool of roots or stretch to the sun in the highest branches of the canopy.

Our main studio project while studying in Florence was the renovation of an old prison, Le Murate, into a library, organized through ritual. We made simple alterations to the existing building but we were largely focused on creating a new method for learning architecture through the ritual of collaboration. The ritual we designed is comprised by the separat ion of what we understand to be the 4 fundamental principles of architecture and pushing the scholars and students to study one subject through books and learn the others through discourse. The final discussion between all 4 categories occurs in the center of the public stair, for all to witness.

For this second-year project, we were tasked with developing a design that covers a large swath of land directly off of Newtown Creek in Queens, New York. It was the largest site we had worked with yet and my solution for occupying 80% of the unprogrammed space was to create a series of formal variations upon the simple wood plank surface. Each component of the project was meant to engage with the expansive wood deck through varying levels and slopes in a way that stimulated a scalable space for the public.

The designated program was to cover 20% of the site with all the needed components of a rock-climbing gym. I pushed this assignment one step further by making the e ntire site climbable. Keeping a continuous material as both the ground plane as well as the walls and roofs of the complex was meant to encourage the public to keep exploring and climbing even when they are not inside the gym.

The design of this project derives from the strategy used in “Carving Curves”, smooth, curving forms puncturing boxed spaces. However, for this site, the strategy was rotated 90 degrees. This simple move forced me to reconsider the design in exciting ways. The boxes then become the main programmatic spaces while the curves were meant for structure, circulation, and visual connections. The project also explores blackboard paint as a public magnet and graffiti alternative.

My semester abroad in London largely revolved around the work of O.M.A., and this project is a creative architectural exploration of the potential of their Netherlands Architect ure Institute proposal in 1988. The project had simple and diagrammatic intentions, the black prism of the archive. We pushed this further and extruded this tilted black volume deep into the earth, exploring the true size and methods for archiving architecture.

This third-year project was a housing development for the formerly homeless in New York City. Our approach to the project brief was to design a building that fostered community, safety, and a feeling of belonging in a city and society that has shunned them. We developed a form that emphasized community through visual connections, creating many connected balconies and valleys through which people can see their neighbors and feel like they are a part of a ne w rehabilitating ecosystem.

INITIAL MASSING

We wanted at least 3 or 4 distinct mounds for housing. Having this many mounds would create MORE THAN 1 shared communal valley for gardening and other common park uses.

For our inital massing we used the FAN ORGANIZATION of the affordable housing in the immediate vicintiy to carve out the shared spaces we wanted to create for the project. The angles pinch together towards the side of the bike path and fan out from each other as they work their way towards the street. Imitating the formation of the buildings behind the project allows for an immediate contextual association.

SMOOTH EDGES

Once the mountain was created with the proper valley and mound conditions, we CONTOURED the object at 5 feet.

STEPPED LEVELS

Next, we took that inital massing and smoothed out the blocks, runed the blocky forms into an ORGANIC MOUNTAIN. This step created an entirely unique geometry that we could never have created by hand, the natural flow of the surface was very exciting. It was an intersting combination of computer generated yet organic.

Those contours then created a stacked condition of many levels at increments of 5 feet. We countoured at this increment because we wanted to keep the DETAIL and smooth surface of the original mountain. Stepping at this smaller scale allowed for an exterior at a closer to human scale.

From our initial massing we needed to resolve and reform our geometry to allow for more control over the design. We knew we wanted to keep the mini and major valleys and the three seperate peaks. Our initial design tests were all very short similar to our first design.

We kept the 4 foot stepping geometry because that strategy provedto create and excitign and engaging exterior.

This massing was the first iteration of our final form. The form undulates much more on the exterior and wraps and punctures into the solid walls of the buildng. The edges also dramatically simplify and straighten along longer axis to improve indoor spaces.

RESOLVED FORM 3

The major change in the form at this point was the introduction of 8 foot leveling on the valley walls. This change was to offer agreater occupiable shared balcony among each level, while each tenant has their own balcony. The 4 foot step is less prominent but still pulls away out of the larger walls to break down the scale in intimate moments.

Set of stairs along the back stepped platforms of the structure offers a quick route to connect all of the exterior platforms

CIRCULATION SYSTEM Another series of stairs snake along the open/ semi-public platforms on the West side of the building.

Three main elevator cores with stairs spiraling around them provide the main circulation routes for each tower.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM A steel structure with concrete slabs formed ontop of corrogated steel make up the majority of the structure.

Large overhanging spaces along the street sides and a series of stepped platform hanging over the subground sspace are the main tructural difficulties of the project.
