MISSION AND VISION

Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association provides the opportunity to share in the mission of the hospital through philanthropy. It secures financial support for hospital endeavors, charitable care, and community health education.

The vision of Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association is to grow the endowment through the engagement of individuals in support of health and wellness.

Dear Friends: Thank you for the honor of being the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association president this year. I have enjoyed the privilege, and it is a memory I will treasure. I worked with a talented group of people who are passionate about Lawrence Memorial Hospital, and their enthusiasm is contagious.

I learned memorable lessons this year, including: • LMH is a wonderful community asset with an incredible culture of family, from the Board of Trustees to the medical staff to the support staff and the volunteers.

• Our hospital provides top-quality health care, as evidenced not only by national recognition but the testimony of grateful patients.

• Since its founding in 1969 by Dr. Monti Belot, Anne “Petey” Cerf, Dr. Phillip Godwin, Dr. Laurence Price and Dr. Ralph R. Reed, the Endowment Association has raised funds to support LMH. It now has an endowment of over $8.5 million and contributes about $2 million each year to benefit LMH. • The Endowment Association Board is a group of committed volunteers who work tirelessly for the good of LMH. • LMH has outstanding support, which is illustrated by the philanthropy of area residents toward the hospital.

• We are very fortunate. There are hospitals that do not have an endowment association, let alone one as remarkable as ours.

Conversely, there are endowment associations whose hospitals are not as remarkable as ours.

• Among our blessings are staff members who work diligently to give the Board support that is essential to reaching its goals.

• The mission of the Endowment Board is not only to secure and manage funds for the advancement of LMH, but also to communicate the needs and value of LMH to our community.

As I reflect on the past year, I also am motivated to look to our future. Please forgive me for stating the obvious. However, I believe that as we go forward we need to: • Give back. For Lawrence Memorial Hospital to continue providing high-quality care, we depend on many contributions, of both time and money. Gifts to the Endowment Association come in all sizes and forms, from the daily newspaper for patient rooms to high-tech diagnostic equipment that costs thousands of dollars.

• Move forward. We should continue to set our sights high.

• Achieve excellence. The success of LMH and the Endowment Association was built on the philosophy that we strive for excellence every day. But it’s not something that is achieved and then forgotten.

• Celebrate success. It’s important to applaud our many collective achievements. And do that every day.

Those of us who have been privileged to see the “soul” of LMH closely have an obligation to work tirelessly to increase involvement and support for our hospital. Each cog in the gears of success is vital. For LMH’s continued success, we not only need great administration, medical staff, support staff and volunteers, but also the support of the whole community. And helping broaden that support is up to each of us.

2013: THE YEAR IN REVIEW

LMH is the only hospital in Kansas or Missouri named to the prestigious list.

• Surgeons perform the first robotically assisted surgeries at LMH using the daVinci Surgical System.

• LMHEA hosts the Arctic Blast, a progressive dinner party, to raise funds for the LMH Catch a Break program, which provides cancer patients and survivors with financial assistance for such expenses as rent, medication, utility bills, food or clothing.

MARCH • The Endowment Association kicks off its annual Employee Giving campaign, which is a way for Lawrence Memorial Hospital associates to contribute and provide support for their co-workers. LMH associates lead by their example; they step up to the challenge and support one another and the community. In 2013, 747 LMH employees donate more than $72,000 in support of various programs, including assistance for LMH families in need, an employee education fund, and financial help to provide needed pharmaceuticals and durable medical equipment to indigent patients.

• LMH wins the Community Star Award for donating more than 400 units of blood and the Outstanding Hospital Award from the Community Blood Center. LMH collects more units than any other hospital (521) — a 10 percent increase over the record set in 2011. LMH has won Outstanding Hospital Award for three years in a row.

APRIL • A new hospital website is launched, improving the user experience for almost 300,000 online visits a year.

• LMHEA hosts a seminar, “Healthy Estate Tips: Everybody has an Estate Worth Planning,” for members of the public.

• The Leapfrog Group, an independent national organization, again honors LMH with an “A” Hospital Safety Score. Using publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections, Leapfrog assigns U.S. hospitals grades for their safety.

Only three hospitals in Kansas earn an “A” score in 2013.

JUNE • LMH acquires two new Computed Tomography (CT) scanners — a 40-slice scanner and a 128-slice scanner. Each significantly reduces the amount of radiation exposure for patients.

• Becker’s Hospital Review names LMH to its 100 Great Community Hospitals list.

• Moody’s Investors Service, one of the country’s top credit rating agencies, reaffirms LMH’s long-term credit rating to A1 level, validating the hospital’s strong financial performance.

• Lawrence Memorial Hospital Gift Shop wins top honors in the Gift Shop category of the annual Best of Lawrence contest hosted by the Lawrence Journal-World.

• The first of LMH’s annual Small Town/ Big Cause races is held on June 22 in Eudora.

Other races are held July 20 in Tonganoxie and Aug. 17 in Baldwin City. The 2013 run 5K run/walks attract nearly 200 participants and raise more than $15,000.

The Endowment Association returns a portion of the proceeds to the communities to help finance good health and wellness.

• LMHEA hosts a seminar for hospital employees, retirees and volunteers on “Estate Planning 101.”

JULY • LMH is included on the Top 100 HealthStrong Hospitals list by iVantage Health Analytics. The Hospital Strength Index ranking system compares more than 4,400 general acute care hospitals across a continuum of financial, value-based and market-driven performance indicators.

• Hospitals and Health Networks magazine names LMH one of Health Care’s Most Wired Hospitals for the third year in a row.

LMH is nationally recognized for leading the way in technological integration.

AUGUST • LMH opens a new family medicine practice, Total Family Care, in the 4th Street Health Plaza, 1130 W. 4th Street.

SEPTEMBER • More than 330 golfers participate in the annual H.P. “Penny” Jones Golf Tournament on Sept. 6 at Alvamar Golf and Country Club, raising more than $107,500 for LMHEA. The event has raised more than $1.3 million over the past 30-plus years.

Those funds help the LMH Endowment Association fulfill its mission of enhancing the quality of health care in Douglas County. The annual event helps grow the association’s endowed funds, and in 2013 helps purchase a variety of types of equipment for LMH, including a body temperature monitoring system for ICU patients recovering from heart attacks; a security system that protects infants in the mother-baby unit against abduction; and an incubator for our lab that provides the optimal environment to grow bacteria. And while the Penny Jones tournament is seriously committed to raising money, it is one of the most fun golf tournaments in the region.

• LMHEA hosts a seminar, “Protect Your Spouse: How to Avoid Common Estate Planning Mistakes,” for members of the public.

Charles Loveland, Jack Stuber and Mark Praeger were recognized at the Physician Reception; some of the 22 new physicians who were welcomed to the LMH Medical Staff in 2013 OCTOBER • The 21st annual Stepping Out Against Breast Cancer dance party raises more than $80,000 for breast cancer education and detection. Proceeds from this year’s event, financed by more than 825 attendees, and individual and corporate sponsors, will increase breast cancer awareness through early detection, education, treatment, support and equipment at LMH. Each year, 150 women in our region have mammograms as a result of this event, with many other women benefitting from education and support. LMH has significantly enhanced the quality of care to both men and women in our community through the coordinated services that its staff provides. The committee elected to donate $10,000 of 2013 proceeds to the Catch a Break program to provide assistance to cancer survivors.

• For a second year, The Joint Commission, the nation’s leading accreditor of health care organizations, names LMH a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for performance data in heart attack, pneumonia and surgical care.

NOVEMBER • LMH is recognized as the first hospital in Kansas to achieve High 5 for Mom & Baby recognition, a program that is based on key hospital practices crucial for a successful breastfeeding experience.

• On Nov.3, LMH and LMHEA recognize three physicians who retired — Drs. Charles Loveland, Mark Praeger and Jack Stuber — and 22 physicians who joined the LMH Medical Staff in 2013 with a reception at the home of Dr. Scott Solcher.

• Hospital Auxiliaries of Kansas recognizes the LMH Auxiliary with a Gold Award, which is based on 21 criteria for excellence.

• LMH’s Electric Car Charging Station is up and running on Arkansas Street, adjacent to the circle drive. One space has been designated for a hybrid high-occupancy vehicle.

• LMHEA hosts a seminar, “Your Virtual Afterlife: How to Get Your Digital Ducks in a Row,” for members of the public. Joining the Endowment Association in sponsoring this event are Douglas County Bank, The Trust Company of Kansas, and Douglas County Estate Planning Council.

DECEMBER • To say “thank you” to the hospital’s medical staff, LMH and LMHEA host a holiday party on Dec. 6 for 220 physicians and their guests at The Cider Gallery.

Listed here are some of the equipment and services that were made possible because of your philanthropy: TRIDENT BREAST IMAGER This radiography system for the LMH Breast Center is cutting edge and revolutionizes tissue imaging, such as breast specimens, by incorporating a micro-focused tube and flat panel detector. The result is sharp, high-quality images. It enables greater collaboration among care team physicians by allowing radiologists and surgeons to view the same images simultaneously, regardless of their location.

SECURITY SYSTEM The need to ensure the safety of infants in the Cindy Murray Family Birthing unit is paramount.

In addition to the HUGS security system, which monitors newborns’ locations through ankle bracelets, a new security system was installed. That new system includes locked entrances, video cameras and a speaker system.

WAITING ROOM RENOVATION The LMH cardiovascular lab (cath lab) is a busy, busy place. The improvements to the waiting room of the cath lab make waiting for a loved one a much more comfortable and comforting experience.

MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE Maintaining accurate records for the more than 800 people who volunteer at Lawrence Memorial Hospital is a Herculean effort. And it requires specific software. This new software allows volunteer services staff to schedule volunteers and track necessary documentation, such as TB testing and flu vaccination.

ENDOTOOL GLUCOSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM This software assists in calculating insulin drips based on a patient’s individual needs. It also calculates dose changes when a patient is already on insulin and is not managed well on their current dose.

SHARE PROGRAM When a newborn dies, it’s heartbreaking. This program helps preserve memories for the infant’s parents, whose grief is immeasurable. Our hope is this program in some small way brings comfort to family members.
