Every day starts with possibility At Lawrence, we believe every student deserves to feel capable and to know that they are. For more than 50 years, we’ve partnered with families to help students unlock their academic potential and rediscover confidence in themselves. Here, students gain the skills to succeed in the classroom and something even more powerful: the self-belief to understand their strengths, meet their challenges, and move forward with independence.
Our students make amazing contributions to the world. And every day at Lawrence, we help them get there.
Great learning starts with feeling known. At Lawrence, we take time to understand each student as a whole person — how they learn, what challenges them, what motivates them, and where their strengths shine. That deep understanding shapes everything from classroom support to family partnership, helping students feel seen, supported, and ready to grow.
Empathy is woven into how we teach, and empathy is balanced with accountability.” RAMA JANAMANCHI, Upper School Academic Dean

The day confidence begins Lawrence students come from more than 90 communities across Northeast Ohio and beyond. They bring diverse backgrounds, strengths, and perspectives, but share one important need: a school that understands how they learn. Many have diagnosed language-based learning differences or attention challenges. Here, those differences are never treated as limits, but as part of the story of who each student is and how they can thrive.
Courage
executive function
At Lawrence, students are taught in ways that match how they learn best. Our teachers are specially trained in learning differences and use evidence-based, multisensory strategies to help students make meaningful progress. Instruction is explicit, structured, and responsive, giving students the clarity, repetition, and support they need to build skills, deepen understanding, and experience success. Lawrence uses proven programs and approaches including Orton-Gillingham-based instruction, Wilson Reading System, CodeBreakers, Framing Your Thoughts, and the Key Three Routine.
Scholarship
Every day learning is built around the learner
Academic pillars Expert teachers trained in learning differences Multisensory instruction grounded in research Structured routines build clarity and confidence Purposeful support helps students reach their aha moments

Every day builds a stronger voice For students with learning differences, the right tools can open doors. Lawrence thoughtfully integrates assistive technology across 2–12 so students can access learning in multiple ways, demonstrate what they know, and build greater independence over time. Just as importantly, students learn to understand how they learn best — and to advocate for what helps them succeed.

Lower School
Before the school year even begins, our entire staff sits down and discusses every single student. Everyone shares what they know about that learner’s strengths and challenges. So on the first day of class, we already know their faces, their names, and how they learn best.” ANNABELLE THORNE, Lower School Dean of Students
The days learning clicks Lower School is where many students begin to rebuild their relationship with learning. With intensive literacy instruction, expert teaching, and a pace that meets each learner where they are, students start to make the progress that once felt out of reach. As skills grow, so does confidence — and children begin to see themselves not through struggle, but through possibility.
Proof points
Students spend 160 minutes each day becoming stronger readers and writers Language arts and math groups are based on skill level, not just age Regular assessment helps students move forward when they are ready
Lawrence’s proprietary CodeBreakers curriculum is based on Orton-Gillingham principles: explicit, multisensory, structured, and sequential.
Our students can be extremely creative, innovative thinkers, resourceful and resilientall qualities our world needs. This curriculum challenges them to adopt a growth mindset while honing their innate skills.”

Integrity
DOUGLAS EMANCIPATOR, Director of Middle School
The days independence takes shape Middle School is a bridge — between support and self-direction, between remediation and more demanding academic expectations. Students receive the structure, coaching, and differentiated instruction they need to keep building skills while also learning how to manage time, stay organized, advocate for themselves, and take greater ownership of their work.
Proof points
Differentiated groupings provide support where students need it and challenge when they are ready Executive function skills are taught and reinforced every day Digital resources and classroom technology help students access learning efficiently, confidently and independently Social-emotional growth remains an important part of the daily experience
“The personal relationship is so important. I know what the students’ main struggles are, so I start them off with success instead of what they’re struggling with so they don’t shut down emotionally. I start the class by asking what mood they’re in to help them relax. A strong relationship is a tool.”

Leadership
YELITZA NIEVES-CARABALLO, Director of Experiential Learning & Innovation
The days students take charge of what’s next Lawrence’s High School experience combines strong academic preparation with the support students need to thrive. Classes are ability-based but not tracked, allowing students to be challenged in areas of strength while receiving help where it matters most. Through advisory, guided study, electives, experiential learning, and future planning, students grow not only in knowledge, but in ownership of what comes next.
Proof points
College-preparatory academics with individualized support Daily advisory and guided study sessions Senior project with career exploration and internship experience A wide range of electives, arts, languages, and enrichment opportunities
Every day makes room for connection
Whether through athletics, the arts, clubs, performances, outdoor experiences, or friendships that last for years, students discover belonging is not separate from learning — it strengthens it.
Fellowship
A Lawrence education reaches far beyond the classroom. Here, students have the freedom to explore their passions, try new things, and find their place in a community that truly understands them.

Every day leads to what comes next The true measure of success is not just what students achieve in school, but what they are prepared to do afterward. Beginning in freshman year, Lawrence students work with the Office of College and Career Planning to explore their goals, shape a plan, and move toward a future that fits who they are.
I attribute a lot of my success to Lawrence School. At first it was all about learning how I learn, then it was learning to communicate how I learn. I think that shift in emphasis to self-advocacy is what prepared me for college. It’s taking what you learn about yourself and being able to communicate that to a professor so they know you, and they know you struggle, but they also know you work hard. A Lawrence education works, and it’s lifelong: it will benefit you for the rest of your life.” MATTHEW JANACK, Lawrence Class of 2012 Graduate of University of Akron 2016 & University of Toledo School of Law 2019
