City receives 7 proposals for police headquarters By Chad Lawhorn clawhorn@ljworld.com
In the future, a multimillion dollar police headquarters building might be right on the way to your favorite Lawrence retailer. City officials have re-
ceived seven proposals from property owners wanting to house what could be a $20 million police facility, and several of the proposed sites are in the city’s emerging commercial areas. Three of the properties
are near the Rock Chalk Park sports complex on the far western edge of the city, while another is near the South Iowa Street shopping corridor and one is in a developing eastern Lawrence shopping district. None of them, however,
may end up being the ultimate selection. “I want to make it clear that we will be looking at other properties that haven’t been proposed yet,” City Manager David Corliss said. But city officials did put out a call for any property
owner in the area to submit a proposal to sell the city 12 to 15 acres of property that could house a police headquarters facility of upwards of 100,000 square feet and parking that could accom-

More than 100 active and retired faculty and staff at Kansas University today released a signed statement in support of the free speech rights of Professor David Guth, who was placed on leave after he wrote a controversial tweet blasting the NRA. Bill Tuttle, retired professor of history and American Studies, helped gather the signatures, saying he wanted to “stiffen the backbone of the university” in the face Guth of calls from some legislators to have Guth fired or face appropriations battles. “They are under attack,” Tuttle said of the university. Get ready, basketball fans: Late Night in the Phog is Friday By Giles Bruce gbruce@ljworld.com
The 2013-2014 Kansas University basketball season kicks off Friday with the annual Late Night in the Phog event at Allen Fieldhouse. Fans will be able to get their first look at newcomers to this year’s men’s and women’s basketball teams. The 29th annual Late Night in the Phog features skits starring members of the basketball teams, music by the KU pep band, video highlights, coach and player introductions, and
scrimmages with the teams. The event is taking place a little earlier than usual this season because of the NCAA moving up the start of men’s fall basketball practice by two weeks to allow for more flexible scheduling. Late Night in the Phog traditionally brings a capacity crowd of about 16,000 to Allen Fieldhouse. Admission is free and on a first-come, firstserved basis. Doors open at
