As the 2026-27 school year gets underway, our classrooms will once again be filled with curious minds, dedicated educators, and the excitement that comes with a new school year. Throughout the summer months, staff members have worked behind the scenes to ensure our schools are ready for students on the first day. They have welcomed new team members, prepared classrooms, improved facilities, and planned meaningful learning experiences. In this edition, you’ll find backto-school information, important reminders, and highlights of what’s ahead for Lawrence Public Schools. Whether you’re preparing a student for the first day of school or simply interested in the work happening across our district, we hope you’ll take a few moments to explore the stories and resources inside. Points of Pride 5th & 6th Graders Learn Instrument Fundamentals at 2026 Summer Novice Music Camp An ensemble of over 100 fifth and sixth graders gathered at Lawrence High School to continue this ancient human tradition and learn the fundamentals from our district’s stellar instrumental music faculty. Students explored a variety of brass, wind, and string instruments throughout the week-long experience. Flutists learned how to properly
assemble and disassemble their instruments. Violinists practiced their bow skills in the “cup challenge,” passing a small cup around the room using only pencils. And cellists channeled their best zombie impressions during an exercise designed to sharpen the speed and accuracy of their hand placement.
LPS Volunteers Pack Thousands of Free Meals for Kids Through Rain & Shine Through rain and shine, our amazing team of staff and community volunteers worked through the early morning to pack and deliver thousands of free meal kits to families and children in our community.
Our district’s Nutrition & Wellness and Facilities & Operations teams set up shop at the Douglas County Fairgrounds for this year’s Weekly Summer Meal Kit Pickup. There, staff and volunteers weathered the elements, direct-
ed traffic, and unloaded trucks full of carrots, apples, oranges, waffles, milk, juice, and all kinds of goodies. The Summer Meals team’s turquoise shirts even matched their stylish new meal kit bags!

Points of Pride Lawrence Board of Education Selects President and Vice President for 2026–27 The Lawrence Board of Education has elected new leadership for the 2026–27 school year, choosing Bob Byers as Board President and Yolanda Franklin as Board Vice President during the board’s annual organizational meeting on Monday, July 13. Byers brings a long history of service to the role, having served the Lawrence Board of Education across multiple terms dating back to 2009. Byers will serve as Board President for the 2026–27 school year. Franklin, elected to the board
in 2024, continues her service to the district as Board Vice President for the 2026–27 school year. The board also recognized GR Gordon-Ross for his leadership as Board President during the 2025– 26 school year, thanking him for his service and dedication to Lawrence students, staff, and families. Lawrence Public Schools extends its appreciation to all seven members of the Board of Education, who volunteer their time and expertise to guide the district on behalf of the community.

Haven, a student at Liberty Memorial Central Middle School, was joined by family, NASS team members, Executive Director of Finance Cynde Frick, and current Board President Bob Byers for the celebration.
