“We feel like there’s room to come in and grab some market share,” Baty told the Eagle in 2012. “We just feel like there’s room for a different customer experience in Kansas City.”

Three and a half years after a student accused him of groping her during a study session, a longtime Kansas University professor is still fighting KU in court.

Zamir Bavel, 85, says KU violated his rights by denying him a hearing before finding him guilty of sexual harassment. He sued KU in Douglas County District Court, lost, appealed, and is now waiting on the Kansas Court of Appeals to consider his case.

Bavel KU says the rules that applied in Bavel’s case don’t specify that hearings must be formal. The university contends Bavel was given other opportunities to be heard and that a trial-like hearing wasn’t needed to determine his guilt and punish him.

documents in Bavel’s case roam over at least four sets of rules governing multiple university bodies, offices and administrators.

Even though Douglas County Judge Robert Fairchild sided with KU, he wrote this when he denied Bavel’s request to reconsider the case: “Frankly, the court found it to be extremely difficult to wade through all of the various policies and rules to find the ones that apply. Even then, at times one provision seems to contradict another provision. The University could benefit from rewriting and reorganizing all of these rules and regulations to make them more cohesive and hopefully more succinct.”

Bavel said KU’s process of handling sexual harassment complaints is badly flawed and needs thorough revision.

After finding Bavel guilty, KU suspended him two weeks without pay, denied him a raise for the next year and ordered him to take sexual harassment training.

Bavel also was harmed by “agonizing over being trapped with no one listening, emotional pain and suffering at the accusation and its handling, the threat of being fired, and the damage to my name and reputation,” he wrote in a document submitted to the court. “No one is naive enough to think confidentiality can be preserved with more than 15 people in the loop, and the complaining student, her friends and her friends’ friends.”

‘I’ll fight it’ A native of Israel, Bavel came to KU in 1968 and was originally part of the computer science department.

Now he is a professor of Information Processing Studies (and the only person at KU who teaches the subject) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This semester he’s teaching Intro to

Symbolic Logic and Intro to the Theory of Computing.

Bavel said he’s always made it a priority to give students all the help they need and encourages them to call, text or email anytime. Outside of his office hours in Snow Hall, Bavel said he’s met individuals and small groups of students for study sessions at Perkins Restaurant for years.

“Just about the greatest joy I have is when I see the lights come out of the eyes of the students — they got it,” he said.

Bavel said the lawsuit against KU has come at great personal expense.

In the suit he requests that the court reverse KU’s actions against him and order the university to conduct a new investigation into his case.

“When I’m guilty of whatever I’m accused of, I just take it,” Bavel said.

“When I’m not guilty, I’ll fight it.”

Harassment accusation In May 2011, the student complained to KU that Bavel sexually harassed her a month earlier during an off-campus study session.

According to KU’s appeals court brief: The student told Steve Ramirez, KU’s Title IX coordinator at the time, that Bavel sat very close to her, rubbed her knee, placed his arm around her and rubbed her shoulder.

This made her uncomfortable, but she didn’t know what to do and did not say anything.

After a friend who was with her left the study session, the student leaned over to pick up her backpack and Bavel grabbed her breast and pulled her up toward him until they were face to face.

The next day Bavel sent the student an email that said, “Please tell me if I misinterpreted, if I assumed too much.” A few days later, he emailed, “From your lack of answer and your demeanor (the Mona Lisa smile is almost gone), I gather that I did, indeed, misinterpret.

dent set up the encounter and lied about him touching her, perhaps, he says, because she had an obsession with him and felt scorned when he did not reciprocate.

He contends: The student stared at him throughout the semester in a way that made him think she had a fixation, which he found disconcerting and especially strange since he is so old.

He had helped the student before in his office and at Perkins. She always sat across the table (Bavel said he reads and writes upside down), but this time asked to sit next to him. She also brought a friend who was top in the class and did not need tutoring, possibly, Bavel claims, to act as a witness.

Bavel outlines these explanations and more in a 26-page addendum submitted to the court.

The document also includes medical records Bavel says show arthritis, fused neck vertebrae and degenerated lumbar discs make it physically impossible for him to move in the way the student described.

Bavel said he felt uncomfortable when the student sat so close to him at Perkins but didn’t want to leave and turn away a student who needed help. He argues the emails were an attempt to put the student at ease without hurting her feelings after rejecting her advances. He contends “please erase” was “computerese” for forget the whole thing.

What’s a hearing?

At issue in court is KU’s rules and hearing process, not sexual harassment.

But Bavel believes he would have been exonerated if KU had given him the opportunity to hear exactly what he was accused of and respond in detail as he did in the court addendum.

written communications from Bavel and interviewed the student’s friend and another professor she told about the sexual harassment.

Ramirez found Bavel guilty of sexual harassment and shared his investigation report with the CLAS dean. Ramirez, the dean, the provost and the chancellor all agreed on discipline for Bavel.

Administrators noted that in an uncomfortable situation — even if initiated by a student — faculty members are responsible for ensuring interactions remain appropriate, according to KU’s court brief.

“Professor Bavel suggests that the responsibility lies with students to speak up; however, it is the responsibility of university employees to speak up to eliminate situations that could be perceived as harassing, particularly in circumstances that might be interpreted as exploitation of the power differential between professor and student.”

Bavel requested a hearing from the Faculty Rights Board — which had information from KU about the investigation and additional information from Bavel — but the board denied his request.

KU did follow its prescribed procedures, the university asserts in its brief to the appeals court.

Even though Bavel cited provisions from multiple university rules, KU says its Faculty Rights Board Procedures are the most relevant. Granting in-person hearings is at that board’s discretion. “‘Hearing’ does not mean a formal adversarial evidentiary proceeding,” KU’s brief says.

“Instead, the University’s use of the term ‘hearing’ expresses the fundamental due process concept of notice and an opportunity to be heard.”

Complex rules Bavel’s case is one of numerous KU decisions to be challenged in court.

Barnhill called KU’s rules and regulations a “morass.”

In the academic setting, providing justice to victims clashes with fairness and due process for the accused, he said. He said Bavel’s case shows why it’s especially problematic for universities to investigate even more grave complaints such as sexual assault.

“The university has a hard enough time providing proper due process — and determining what even the process is — in cases that do not rise to the level of a crime, let alone how do they do it in cases that rise to a crime?” Barnhill said. “It’s a serious concern.”

KU has made efforts to streamline the rules Judge Fairchild criticized in January, Barcomb-Peterson said.

Since 2012, KU’s Faculty Governance has been working on revising the Faculty Code of Rights, Responsibilities and Conduct. The university also has created a sexual harassment procedure document.

Barcomb-Peterson said KU continually evaluates and amends policies in response to changes in federal and state law and to improve clarity.

“This case demonstrates that the university takes seriously every allegation of sexual harassment, and it investigates and takes appropriate disciplinary action when the allegations are substantiated,” Barcomb-Peterson said.

“The District Court’s decision denying Professor Bavel’s claims confirms that KU acted properly by concluding he had engaged in sexual harassment and punishing him.”

High beams will help illuminate the eyes of deer by the road. l If a deer enters or approaches your path, brake firmly but stay in your lane. Many more serious accidents occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer and hit other vehicles or lose control of their cars. l If you see one deer, assume there are more deer nearby. l If you do hit a deer, immediately report it to law enforcement if the deer is blocking the roadway and poses a danger to other motorists. If you’re unsure whether the animal is dead, keep your distance, as an injured wild animal with sharp hooves can inflict serious injury.

Rob Robinson and Gillan Alexander recently founded Forever Outdoors, which brings donors and recipients to Kansas for all-expensespaid hunting and fishing trips.

“We want to get people to overcome obstacles and do things outside,” said Robinson, a Starkville, Miss., firefighter.

In 2012, Robinson donated a kidney to Alexander. The two had met

Their story was featured in the Journal-World that December and made national news. The transplant was done at Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan. Last year, the men took a group

of wounded veterans to Kansas to hunt. More recently, they brought two double kidney transplant recipients and a cancer survivor.

“One thing I want to do is encourage folks to like us on Facebook. That’s a way for them to get up with us and see what we’re doing,” Robinson said.

Their ultimate goal is to build a lodge in western Kansas that will offer free hunting and fishing to organ donors and recipients.

Hey, anything’s possible: Alexander likely never thought the guy who knocked on his door to ask to hunt on his property would one day give him a kidney.

KU researcher tackles professional wrestling

Wichita — Jordan Bass learned a secret when he was 12: Professional wrestling is fake.

“I was crushed,” he said. “I didn’t watch again for years.”

He came back to it this year — this time armed with a doctorate, The Wichita Eagle reported.

And now he has completed a scientific research study at Kansas University. On wrestling.

It’s still fake. Brock Lesnar, Dolph KANSAS Ziggler, A.J. Lee? Fakers. Smackdown? Fakedown. Wrestlemania? UNIVERSITY Fakemania.

“But I marvel at what they do and what wrestling has become,” said Bass, who has surveyed hundreds of World Wrestling Entertainment fans from eight countries.

“They are extremely athletic, able to execute extremely athletic moves while not injuring themselves or others. But wrestlers now also have to act, good enough that they make their story line believable.

“They expect you to safely body-slam a 300-pound person, then grab a mike and talk to a crowd in a way that is believable.”

Being believable is big business and is done really well by these people, said Claire Schaeperkoetter, a doctoral student who helped with the research.

“Their public perception has to be spot on,” Bass said.

There are parallels to other big entertainment efforts, but not in sports, Bass said. The WWE is much more like sitcoms or fictional television dramas like “Breaking Bad” or “House of Cards.”

“If you’re a fan of the show ‘Breaking Bad,’ you might know that they did the same sort of thing as what the WWE does all the time,” Bass said. “In the first season, they were going to kill off the Aaron Paul character — until they realized how popular Aaron Paul had become.

So they kept him.

“WWE does the same thing. They pay attention to fans. They even know whether a wrestler is going to be popular in one part of the country but not so much in another part of the country, and they adjust accordingly.”

Real sports teams can’t do this, Bass said. If the Oklahoma Thunder basketball team is bad, it can’t just change its entire lineup or story lines.

“Well, they could,” Bass said. “But then they’d be really bad.”

Scriptwriters for the WWE know what they are doing, Bass said. It’s not only that they pit heroes against villains.

“It is that any good villain nearly always starts out as a hero,” Bass said.

“And when that story gets stale, they flip it the other way.

“A good villain needs to be a hero first. And then he becomes a heel.”

2. What you can set out. All the common materials that can be recycled will be accepted as part of the program. And here’s an important thing to remember: You don’t have to sort anything. Just throw all in the blue container. Items that are accepted: cardboard, newsprint, office paper, chipboard, glass both dark and light in color, aluminum, tin, and plastic containers marked No. 1 through 7. You even can dispose of scrap metal, as long as it is less than 30 inches in all directions and weighs less than 50 pounds.

In terms of what’s not accepted, perhaps the most common items that will cause some confusion are plastic grocery sacks.

Those can’t be put into the blue containers, but the city notes there are other locations around town that recycle the bags. Light bulbs, motor oil, garden hoses, electronics, clothing and food scraps are other things that shouldn’t be put into the recycling container.

that is run by Perry-based Hamm Inc. The Hamm employees will use conveyor belts and other technology to sort the recyclables into various categories.

“Then we’ll bale them into a lot of Lego-like mega blocks,” said Charlie Sedlock, director of waste services for Hamm.

The bales of material ultimately could be shipped all over the world, although Hamm will try to sell to as many local buyers as possible. The recycled material is used to make new materials. For example, glass is often used to make fiber glass.

Cardboard often is used to make more cardboard boxes. Aluminum often is used to make new aluminum cans. In fact, Sedlock said the industry commonly says the Coke can you are drinking from today was made from a used Coke can about 90 days earlier.

The new plant, which is at the intersection of Kansas Highway 32 and U.S. Highway 24/40 at the Leavenworth/Douglas County line, employs about 15 people.

4. How much it will cost. This is the easiest one yet to explain: $2.81 a month. If your cart is completely full of materials, it is $2.81 a month. If it is half full, it is $2.81 a month.

city. In fact, you should start noticing the charge anytime now. City commissioners last year decided that the program would be voluntary participation but mandatory pay. There won’t be any penalty if you don’t want to recycle. In fact the city will even come pick up your cart for you, if you really don’t want it. But you are still going to pay for the service, just like you pay for city trash service even if you don’t use it. It is by charging every household (businesses aren’t part of the system yet) that commissioners were able to hold the monthly fee to $2.81.

5. The future of the Wal-Mart recycling center. Wal-Mart’s store on south Iowa Street includes a large and popular recycling center where customer drop off their materials, and clients of Community Living Opportunities — a nonprofit that helps the developmentally disabled — run the center. It has been projected that the volume of material at the recycling center will decline significantly once all Lawrence households have curbside service. We’ve asked WalMart officials for several months about the future of the center, but they have provided no information on their plans for the center once the city’s program begins. Large numbers of people outside the city limits also use the center, so it will be an issue to keep an eye on.

Recycling start Roll out the blue dumpsters. The city’s curbside recycling service gets started this week.

T

hose huge blue recycling dumpsters that the city has been delivering all over town finally will be put to use this week.

Local residents who have been dragging the blue monsters to the curb for the last couple of weeks apparently didn’t get — or read — the memo that the city’s curbside recycling program wouldn’t begin until this Tuesday. Half of city trash customers will have their recycling picked up on their normal trash day this week and half next week.

A map outlining the every-other-week collection areas was distributed with the recycling bins and is available on the city’s website.

A number of private companies already were providing curbside recycling services in Lawrence, and it’s unfortunate that the city’s new service shut out the small private businesses that had served Lawrence customers well for many years.

However, city officials are hoping the citywide service will divert a much larger volume of trash from the city landfill. Everyone must pay for the service whether they use it or not, and officials hope the service — which requires no sorting of materials (glass, plastics, cardboard, newspaper, etc.) — will gain wide acceptance in the community.

As part of the program, the city also contracted with the Perry-based Hamm Quarries to operate a plant just north of Lawrence to process the recycled materials. Rather than contracting with firms that would have taken local recyclables to Topeka or Kansas City, the city took the positive action of supporting a local business that will create local jobs.

The new citywide recycling system takes away many of the excuses local residents had for not recycling. The Lawrence system requires no sorting or special trips to drop off the recycling.

All you have to do is throw your recyclables in the blue dumpster (which was delivered with a list of what’s acceptable) and roll it out to the curb with your trash can every other week. You’re already paying for the service (a reasonable $2.81 per month), so you might as well use it.

As with all new services, curbside recycling is bound to have a few glitches in the beginning, but the program is a good one that likely will quickly gain popularity with Lawrence residents and hopefully create the desired reduction in landfill tonnage.

‘War on women’ an insulting tactic Denver — One of the wonders of this political moment is feminist contentment about the infantilization of women in the name of progressive politics. Government, encouraging academic administrations to micromanage campus sexual interactions, now assumes that, absent a script, women cannot cope. And the Democrats’ trope about the Republicans’ “war on women” clearly assumes that women are civic illiterates.

Access to contraception has been a constitutional right for 49 years (Griswold v. Connecticut, 1965). The judiciary has controlled abortion policy for 41 years (Roe v. Wade, 1973). Yet the Democratic Party thinks women can be panicked into voting about mythical menaces to these things.

One Democrat whose gallantry toward women is monomaniacal, Sen. Mark Udall, is now uncomfortably known here as “Mark Uterus.” He is seeking a second term by running such a relentlessly gynecological campaign that The Denver Post, endorsing his opponent, Rep. Cory Gardner, denounced the “shocking amount of energy and money” Udall has devoted to saying Gardner favors banning birth control.

Actually, Gardner favors over-the-counter sales of oral contraceptives. In addition to being common sense, Gardner’s proposal is his way of making amends for formerly advocating a state constitutional “personhood” amend-

By defining personhood as beginning at conception, these measures might preclude those birth control technologies that prevent implantation in the uterus of a fertilized egg.

On this slender reed, Udall leans his overheated accusations that Gardner is bent on “trampling on women’s rights,” is on a “crusade” for “eliminating” reproductive freedoms, and would “outlaw birth control.”

Gardner, 40, cherubic and ebullient, is a human sunbeam whose unshakable cheerfulness is disconcertingly authentic as he exclaims to the waiter at breakfast,

“Thank you for your work this morning!” A fifth-generation Coloradoan who lives in a prairie town in a house once owned by his great-grandparents, Gardner is amused by an anomaly: “Udall looks like the Republican in this race — dour and angry.”

When Gardner ran an ad saying Udall is “a real nice guy” but too much a creature of Washington to change it (Udall’s father, an Arizona congressman, ran for president; Udall’s uncle was an Arizona congressman and secretary of the interior; Udall’s cousin is a senator from New Mexico), Udall, in high synthetic dudgeon, called the ad a reprehensible attack on his family.

Which elicited this puckish headline in the Washington Examiner: “Cory Gardner calls Mark Udall ‘nice guy’; Democrats want ad pulled.”

In losing Colorado’s 2010 Senate race, the Republican candidate carried men by 14 points but lost women by 17.

This 31-point gap will not be replicated this year. In a recent Fox News poll, Gardner trailed Udall among women by just 5 points while leading among men by 17. Independents favored Gardner by 15 points.

Barack Obama accepted the 2008 Democratic nomination here in a football stadium decorated with faux neoclassical columns made of plywood. He excoriated John McCain for having “voted with George Bush 90 percent of the time.” Ask

Ross Kaminsky, a radio host here, writes: “Gardner tells a personal story. ‘I was visiting a high school in Kit Carson, Colorado, when a young woman came up to me asking about in-state tuition for non-citizens. “I’m graduating at the top of my high school class, but my parents brought me here illegally when I was 5 years old and, without instate tuition, I can’t afford college,” she told me.’ Gardner’s answer — that for several reasons this really needed to be dealt with as part of broader immigration reform — left him feeling unsatisfied even though it accurately represented his view. He continues: ‘Five years later, I went back to Kit Carson and sat down in a little restaurant for a quick bite. And who do you think ended up serving me?

The same girl who five years earlier was the valedictorian of her high school.’ Gardner’s conclusion ... is that this cannot be the best outcome for the girl, for her family, or for the state of Colorado.”

In order to change your mind, you have to have one.

The “war on women” incantation is mindless — a substitute for thought. This is surely obvious to thinking women, including one Gardner knows in Kit Carson.

Retail climate To the editor: You know, I can’t help but wonder whether or not we’d be in the position of needing new police facilities but not having a clear way to pay for them if we as a community would be more open to retail growth. The growing interest that Lawrence is attracting from national retailers in both the South Iowa and northwest areas of town are encouraging to me, but what if we stopped trying to tell retailers where to go, and allow them to go where it makes the most sense? The most sense for shoppers, the most sense for the retailers, the most sense for our community.

Continuing to push retail where retail does not want to be yields two results: 1) no retail growth or 2) bad retail growth.

Retailers such as Menards, Sam’s Club, and other big names will bring millions of dollars in retail sales to our community. They will pay property taxes and collect sales taxes, which is a benefit to our community. I certainly hope that we as a community will help send the message to the world that Lawrence, Kansas is open for business.

Each step up in competition requires more adjustments.

Sometimes, even when a player is ready, he doesn’t know it and needs something to break the dam of pressure.

It even can happen to a team all at once.

Kansas University baseball coach Ritch Price, who has friends in the organizations of both World Series teams, did a nice job of articulating the key moment for the Royals, America’s darlings. He identified it as the comeback from four runs down in the wild-card game against the Oakland A’s, saying it took the team to “another level.”

“I honestly believe right before our eyes, (Eric) Hosmer’s become a superstar,” Price said. “I mean, he’s railing balls to left-center.

He’s hitting home runs.

(Mike) Moustakas is hitting home runs, clutch home runs. Those guys, right before our eyes, that one win has taken and propelled that whole team to the next level.”

Price likened that game to another famous moment in sports history.

“I think that every great team, I go back to the 49ers of (Joe) Montana and (Jerry) Rice and when Montana hit the great touchdown to John Taylor for that comeback win in the Super Bowl,” Price said. “If they don’t make that drive and Montana doesn’t hit Taylor, they may not win those four championships and be a dynasty. That elevated them.”

Royals general manager Dayton Moore and manager Ned Yost showed patience in believing their young players were the long-term solution, even when they so often struggled with the present.

“I honestly believe that comeback win (vs. the A’s) has taken that whole group of guys to the level they thought they could be at, that group that they’ve been trusting in and believing in, and now the players believe it,” Price said. “That swagger in the dugout now, it’s like watching the Yankees when they were winning world championships.

They know they’re going to win. That swagger in their dugout and that energy, you only see that in college.

You don’t see that in pro players very often. It’s awesome to watch.”

And for Price, frustrating to listen to so much of the talk along the way.

“I find it unbelievable when I’m driving home from the airport after a recruiting trip, and I’m listening after the Royals lost, and the fans are just beating up Ned Yost,” Price said.

“And then when this thing is all over, you can make an argument that Bruce Bochy and Ned Yost have managed their bullpens better than anyone in baseball.”

KU soccer upended again

Now is no time to panic, nor is there much reason for concern.

That was the message coming out of the mouths of Kansas University soccer players and coach Mark Francis on Sunday, following the team’s second loss in three days at Rock Chalk Park.

stance, because they won 14 of their first 15 games before suffering their first back-toback losses of the season — the latest, 2-0, to No. 16 West Virginia.

In the minutes following their second home setback against a top-25, Big 12 opponent this weekend, senior KU goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud and junior midfielder Liana Salazar addressed their teammates, even before Francis came to speak with them on the field. All

three wanted each player in a Kansas uniform to know the Jayhawks (14-3 overall, 4-2 Big 12) shouldn’t be rethinking anything.

“It’s so hard sometimes,” Salazar said after WVU (112-2, 4-0-1) extended its unbeaten streak to 12 games.

Cummings-King connection pays off The developing relationship between junior quarterback Michael Cummings and junior wide receiver Nigel King is one of the most intriguing aspects of the slowly improving Kansas University offense.

Cummings, a fourthyear junior who made his second start of the season — and the seventh of his KU career — in Saturday’s 34-21 loss at Texas Tech, finished 20-of-32 passing for 235 yards and two touchdowns. Only

two of those 20 completions landed in the hands of King, who finished with 51 receiving yards, including a long grab of 35 yards. But it doesn’t take a genius to see that, in their short time working together, Cummings has found something he likes in the Maryland transfer who joined the Jayhawks (2-5 overall, 0-4 Big 12) late last summer.

“He’s one of those guys that you can trust with the ball in the air,” Cummings said of King, who seems to be emerging as a favorite deep threat. “Either he’s going to come

down with it, or nobody’s going to come down with it.”

Although the two only connected on one deep shot against the Red Raiders, Cumm i n g s continually tried to push Cummings the ball down the field to King, sometimes even throwing into double coverage in an attempt to give King a chance to make a play.

“We have a good con-

nection,” King said. “If we call a deep pass, I know there’s a good chance it might be coming to me. I run every route to win, and we’ve built that relationship by making plays in pracKing tice every day.”

King enters KU’s second and final bye week of 2014 as the team’s fourth-leading receiver — 215 yards on 14 catches — and his 15.4 yards-per-

reception is tops on the team.

“We passed up a lot of opportunities to close the game,” King said of the offense’s output against Texas Tech. “Once we get over that stride, we’ll be pretty good. But it’s gotta come fast. The season’s coming to an end. We gotta take our strides and keep on going, but make it quick.”

Cummings said that business-like approach was the norm for the 6-foot-3, 210-pound King, who came to KU with 24 Div. I appearances, 575 yards and five career touchdowns already on his stat sheet.

“He has that type of mentality,” Cummings said. “As a quarterback, it makes it easier to throw to him.”

King has a plan for how he thinks KU’s off week should go and said he looked forward to the team being able to regroup and catch its breath after being asked to change both starting quarterbacks and head coaches on the fly during the past few weeks.

“I definitely feel that it’s good timing,” King said. “We’ll be able to work on small things like timing with the quarterback and things like that.”

The Mountaineers, who haven’t lost since the last weekend of August, only outshot Kansas 9-7. And Francis thought West Virginia only created three good chances in 90 minutes against the KU defense and keeper Stroud (two saves).

On one of those, Kate Schwindel drilled a shot off the crossbar. On the other two, she sent the ball into the back of the net, in the fifth and 77th minutes.

“Nothing’s changed,” Francis, KU’s 16th-year coach, said. “It’s not like we’re losing to someone who’s an unranked opponent or an opponent that’s not worthy of beating us, because both teams (No. 22 Texas Tech on Friday and WVU Sunday) obviously did enough to win the games.”

Salazar had one of her two shots hit the crossbar above Mountaineers keeper Hannah Steadman (three saves), and the visiting goalie denied KU senior midfielder Jamie Fletcher on three occasions.

The stout West Virginia defense, led by Kadeisha Buchanan in the back, has only surrendered 0.42 goals a game in its current unbeaten streak. While Kansas couldn’t produce a score against it, Francis said his team actually much better than the scoreboard indicated, and that was possibly the biggest reason for optimism.

“We’re coming off of a half where we’ve played as well as we’ve played all year,” the coach said of the final 45 minutes, “and we’ve gotta build on that.

I told the girls that has to be the level of understanding that we expect from here on out. That’s the minimum (level) that we should be playing at. If that’s the case, then we’re starting to play very, very well at the right time.”

Brown and his staff also were responsible for bringing the “Late Night” tradition to town. Late Night celebrated its 30th anniversary this year.

The first Late Night was in 1985-86, Brown’s third season here.

“It was embarrassing at first when they said, ‘Late Night With Larry,’”

Brown said. “I didn’t want that, just like I wanted ‘Kansas basketball school’ for our (summer) camp.

I remember one year they wanted to get Vanna White (from Wheel of Fortune) to come. She was too expensive. I kind of laugh at that now,” Brown added. “What it has become is incredible.

That’s a credit to Bill. It’s amazing.”

Brown said he’s “flattered” to take part in next Monday’s “Celebrating 60 Years” program, which Self has called a “rap ses-

sion” of sorts with host Jay Bilas of ESPN. “That was a big part of my life being there,” Brown said. “What Bill has done, what Roy’s done, what Ted has meant to the program before I got there, I have admiration for all of them, Bill in particular. He’s included me in so many things since I left. He’s made me feel part of that program, something I don’t take lightly and appreciate.”

FSHS golfers roll into state

Topeka — At the beginning of the season, Free State High girls golfers struggled with their swings and put up inconsistent scores.

That changed in the last few weeks, when the Firebirds improved their play, and it led to strong scores at their regional, when they qualified as a team for the Class 6A state tournament. They will begin teeing off at 9:20 a.m. today at the Topeka Country Club.

It’s the second straight year the Firebirds have qualified as a team for state, finishing 11th among 12 teams last season.

“They are competitors, and they want to do well, but I think in the beginning they were putting a little too much pressure on themselves,” FSHS coach Layne Meyer said. “I think once they saw the results weren’t as good as they had hoped, I think they just got back to just playing and not worrying so much about the results.”

Senior Emily Bermel, who finished second in the Sunflower League and

seventh at regionals, is a three-time state qualifier, along with senior teammate Karen Campbell.

The Firebirds have plenty of leadership with seniors Savannah Reeb, Erin Meyers and Sydney Buller.

There’s also sophomore Anne Goebel, who finished third on the team at regionals and was on last year’s state tournament team.

“Those seniors made it their goal this year to get back to state as a team from the very first day of practice,” Meyer said. “To see them accomplish that was a lot of for me, and I know they’re really excited.”

What’s the team’s goal at state?

“I guess just do the best that we can,” said Meyers, a two-time state qualifier.

“Just go out there and have a good last tournament for the five seniors.”

Their coach just hopes they can enjoy the return trip to state and swing the same way they have for the past few weeks.

“My only concern is that they’re too excited, or I hope they don’t put too much pressure on themselves,” Meyer said.

“Just trust their abilities and just go out play.”

Manning went into the showdown two TDs shy of Brett Favre’s record of 508 and threw four touchdown passes, giving him 510.

He surpassed Favre’s mark with an 8-yard strike to Demaryius Thomas late in the second quarter.
