Kansas University is proposing the construction of a new 500-bed residence hall because of the projected increase in the number of international students attending the school.

Kurt Alan Lucas, Valley Falls, age 49, died in a motorcycle accident in Perry, Kansas, on September 25th, 2014.

Kurt was born December 13, 1964 to Donald and Rita Lucas in Lawrence, Kansas.

He graduated from Lawrence High School.

He served in the armed forces and held the rank of sergeant in the Kansas Army National Guard, 714th Maintenance Company.

He worked for FedEx for 15 years in Lawrence and most recently as a swing driver in Lenexa.

He was a gifted mechanic and brought new life into many cars, motorcycles, bikes, and even a boat. He loved to fish and did it as often as he was able. He was very active and participated in Ironman, bicycle, and running competitions.

He enjoyed creating and building and built much of his home in Valley Falls. He travelled when he could and loved Hawaii and hoped to go back again.

He had an infectious sense of humor and fun.

He worked hard but always gave so much love and support to his family and friends. He was very spiritual and had a deep connection with God. He loved children and was a great uncle and mentor. He was full of integrity even in difficult circumstances.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Lucas; mother, Rita Lucas; and brother, Brian Lucas.

He is survived by his brother Warren Lucas of Anchorage, Alaska; brother Scott Lucas of DeSoto, Kansas; and five nieces and two nephews.

Please join his family in a viewing Thursday, October 2nd, from 6-8pm at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

A memorial service will be held Friday, October 3rd beginning at 2pm, followed by graveside service at Oak Hill Cemetery.

District Judge Ron Svaty ruled Friday that Jeffrey Wade Chapman is competent to stand trial in the death of 25-yearold Damon Galyardt, whose body was found COURTS near Great Bend in November 2011. The trial was scheduled to begin Feb. 2.

Buildings evacuated after bomb threat N ewton — Newton police have reopened downtown buildings that were closed and evacuated after a suspicious device was found near a community corrections office.

Police received a bomb threat to the corrections center Monday morning and evacuated nearby buildings, including Newton City Hall. A suspicious package was found outside the building.

The Wichita bomb squad was called and a robot dismantled the package, which included a bottle of fluid, a timer and electrical wires.

KWCH-TV reports police have declared the situation safe and reopened the buildings.

Newton is about 27 miles north of Wichita.

But the Supreme Court refused to consider that motion, saying Orel had filed no sworn testimony or evidence to support his claim and that there were facts at issue that had to be heard by a trial court.

The case was then referred to Shawnee County District Court, which appointed a panel of three judges to hear the matter: Judges Larry Hendricks, Franklin Theis and Evelyn Wilson.

Orel’s petition cites a Kansas statute that says when a vacancy occurs on a ballot after the primary election, the party committee “shall” name a replacement. His attorneys argued that without a Democratic candidate, Orel is being denied the right to vote for the Democratic Party’s nominee.

But Democrats argued that the word “shall” in a statute does not always mean that something is mandatory and that legal experts are now advising legislatures not to use the word anymore because its meaning can be vague.

They also noted that the law provides no penalty for failure to comply with it.

Although a registered Democrat, Orel is the father of an aide working on Republican Gov. Sam Brownback’s campaign.

Orel’s attorney, Tom Haney, of Topeka, said his client had grown tired of the high-profile legal fight.

The grant will increase the agency’s community health budget from about $300,000 annually to about $800,000 over the next three years. It will allow the department to hire more community health employees and provide financial support to the Douglas County Food Policy Council, which aims to create a more sustainable local food system. It is the largest grant the health department has ever received to fight chronic diseases.

“The grant is going to help us not only in a three-year time frame but moving forward,” Partridge said. “It just helps us get better prepared for the work of the next 20 years. It’s a much-needed shot in the arm to get us where we need to be.”

Democrats also argued that the petition should be dismissed because the secretary of state’s office has already mailed out ballots to overseas military personnel, and some of those ballots have already been returned. An order to name another Democratic candidate, Rathbun said, would require invalidating votes that have already been cast and requiring those voters to cast new ballots.

Hendricks, the presiding judge on the panel, also raised the question of how officials would handle such a case if a soldier deployed in a combat zone were to die in action before he or she was able to cast a second ballot.

Republicans have been

eager to make sure there is a Democratic candidate on the ballot because there is also an independent candidate on the ballot, Greg Orman, who has been polling even with, or ahead of, three-term incumbent Republican Sen. Pat Roberts. Having two major opponents on the ballot would divide the anti-Roberts vote and reduce the number of votes he needs to win reelection.

And while Democrats have not publicly stated why Taylor withdrew and have not publicly endorsed Orman, they have resisted legal efforts, mainly by Republicans, to force them to name another candidate.

Rathbun said that was because, with only five weeks remaining before the Nov. 4 election, it would be a hopeless race that would only drain resources away from other races on the ballot.

Before hearing arguments on the petition, the panel rejected a motion by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach to intervene in the lawsuit.

Kobach had said his office needed to be before the court because it must certify the names on the ballot and direct county election officials to print ballots.

But Hendricks said the court could issue its orders with or without Kobach involved in the case and that there was no benefit to the court in having his office intervene.

Kobach had urged the court to make its ruling no later than 1 p.m. Thursday to give county officials time to print ballots.

Advance voting begins on Oct. 14.

Four years ago, Rick McNabb suffered a brain aneurysm and subsequent stroke that left him largely paralyzed on the left side of his body. Over the past three months, he climbed the distance of Mount Everest — on a staircase at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

McNabb finished his 99-day journey Thursday when he climbed his 49,724th step. Along the way, he raised money for charity and inspired countless others.

“It gives people hope, particularly for someone in my situation,” McNabb said in a phone interview Thursday, taking a break from watching a documentary about Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the summit of

Mount Everest. “It shows people the possibilities, that they don’t have to quit and they can think big.”

Topeka — Democrats in the Kansas Legislature called Monday for establishing a special committee to investigate allegations of “pay-to-play” schemes involving contracts awarded

by Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration to manage the state’s privatized Medicaid system known as KanCare.

Rep. Jim Ward, D-Wichita, and Sen. Laura Kelly, D-Topeka, said that while the FBI is reportedly investigating whether crimi- Ward nal activity took place, the Legislature should also investigate possible violations of state ethics laws.

“Those questions will likely only be answered by a formal legislative inquiry,” Ward said.

Both Ward and Kelly serve on the Legislature’s Kelly KanCare Oversight Committee, which is charged with monitoring the performance of the privatization program.

But the Republican president of the Senate, Susan Wagle, of Wichita, dismissed their call as “a pathetic attempt to distort the truth and deceive voters in an election year.”

Jeb Bush says GOP Senate would ‘fix a few things’

Wichita — Potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush weighed in on a key midterm election race on Monday, telling a Kansas fundraiser for struggling Sen. Pat Roberts that the incumbent must be reelected so the GOP can take control of the Senate and “fix a few things” in Washington.

The former Florida governor told about 180 supporters that Roberts, who is facing an unexpectedly strong challenge from independent candidate Greg Orman, would not let them down if re-elected, and a GOP Senate would solve problems.

“This is the most pessimistic America has ever been,” Bush told a $100-aplate fundraiser, adding that pessimism makes it hard to move forward as a nation.

Americans, Bush said, are feeling negative because their son or daugh-

ter has graduated for college with student loan debt and cannot find a job or they have seen their health insurance dropped or work hours cut because of the Affordable Care Act. Bush said progressive politicians believe they can regulate and tax to prosperity for a select group of people while “the rest of us suffer.”

Republicans are scrambling to save the 78-yearold Roberts from defeat in a state that has elected only GOP Senators since 1932. A loss in Kansas would make it harder for the party to make a net gain of six seats for a Senate majority in President Barack Obama’s last two years in office.

Unlike other potential 2016 presidential contenders, Bush kept a relatively low public profile for much of the year. But he has stepped up his fundraising and campaigning for GOP candidates as the election approaches.

He is appearing Tuesday in Arkansas with the GOP candidate for governor there, Asa Hutchinson.

His visit to Kansas comes just days after former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin campaigned with Roberts. Two former presidential nominees, U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona and former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas, joined Roberts on the campaign trail last week.

Another potential 2016 White House candidate, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, is also expected to help Roberts’ campaign.

Roberts is battling Orman after Democratic candidate Chad Taylor withdrew from the race. Roberts narrowly survived a bruising primary against a tea partybacked candidate, and after 30 years representing the state in Washington, there have been questions as to whether he has a Kansas residence.

KU police seek six men in connection with campus robbery

Kansas University police are looking for multiple suspects after a strong-arm robbery on campus early Sunday morning.

The victim was on foot on Lilac Lane, east of Fraser Hall, about 2:15 a.m. when six men approached, punched him in the face and stole his phone and wallet, according to a report from the KU Public Safety Office.

KanCare was established early in the Brownback administration as a way to reduce

Under that program, instead of paying health care providers on a feefor-service basis, the state pays three private insurance companies a flat per-patient fee in exchange for managing their health care.

That sort of “managed care” model has been used for years for children and families in Medicaid as well as the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, or S-CHIP. Under KanCare, it was extended to include the elderly and disabled populations, which account for the bulk of the cost of Medicaid.

Bowen believes in Kansas football. He’s won bowl games here as a player. He’s worked under two coaches — Glen Mason and Mark Mangino — who proved you could win at KU. And Bowen said he was honored to be able to try to follow in their footsteps.

“Anyone that would consider this a steppingstone job is an idiot,” Bowen said with conviction. “This is a destination job.”

And now that job is his — at least for the next couple of months.

If things go well and Bowen and the Jayhawks get hot, he may be able to keep it long term. But the 42-year-old Lawrence High and KU grad said angling for the job permanently was the furthest thing from his mind right now. That’s why he did not dwell on the past.

Nor did he look too far into the future. Instead, he focused on today, this team and the moment he’s been dreaming about for as long as he could remember.

“I’ve never known a day of my life that I wasn’t a KU football fan,” he said.

KU staff who “jumped onboard 100 percent, with great attitudes, great energy.” He also tipped his cap to Mason and Mangino, explaining that this team, for at least the next nine weeks, would remind people a lot of the teams that played for those guys.

“Honestly, I don’t feel any pressure,” Bowen said. “I really don’t. I feel like we have a way of operating that’s proven successful at the University of Kansas. I’ve seen the blueprint before here. I’ve been fortunate to be part of a turnaround in the Glen Ma-

son era, in the Mark Mangino era. I feel like we have the stamp of how it works at Kansas. We’re going to implement that plan, and I don’t feel any pressure because I believe that it works. I know it works.”

Last Saturday night, Bowen was stewing over a 23-0 loss to Texas in which his defense was solid throughout but simply could not make up for the struggles of the KU offense. He went to bed that night prepared for another 7 a.m. Sunday trip to the office to grade film and try to come up with yet another way to inspire his guys to move forward. He never thought that 7 a.m. trip would feature a phone call from KU athletic director Sheahon Zenger, and he never thought moving forward would be like this. On Monday, he remembered a time when such a scenario first crossed his mind.

“About 20 years ago, one of the first dates with my wife at what used to be the ice cream shop on 23rd Street,” recalled Bowen, setting the scene for a trip down Memory Lane. “I was a (graduate assistant) at the time and was trying to impress her a little bit and she said, ‘What are you going to be in life?’ or whatever that question is, and I said, ‘Well, I’m going to be the head football coach at Kansas.’”

He is exactly that today. And what happens in the next 61 days could determine how long it stays that way.

One of the reasons Bowen seemed so at ease with the tumultuous transition was the comfort he drew from past triumphs and the lessons he’s learned from past failures. Dad shouldn’t bring children into marital spat Dear Annie: I have been married to “Phil” for 15 years. We have eight children. Our youngest is still in school. The problem is, I’m not happy anymore.

I’ve made mistakes, including flirting with other men. Phil isn’t innocent, either, but he claims if I weren’t talking to these other men, he wouldn’t have approached other women.

My oldest daughter takes Phil’s side and says I ruined the family.

I don’t think he should have been running to her to complain when she was only 16. She’s since moved out, and he’s now telling our next oldest daughter, who is 14, about our problems. I think this is sick.

Phil recently told me he was giving me the “opportunity” to leave, although I don’t need his permission. I’m stay-

Karen Gillan (”Doctor Who”) stars as Eliza Dooley in “Selfie” (7 p.m., ABC), an adaptation of “Pygmalion”/’’My Fair Lady”/’’Pretty Woman” for the age of Facebook.

Gillan has fun playing the strenuously shallow and utterly narcissistic Eliza, a woman who brags about having 263,000 followers on social media sites but doesn’t have the s o c i a l wherewithal to notice that she’s been carrying on with a married man.

After this discovery leads to social mortification by way of body fluids and wardrobe malfunction at 30,000 feet, she discovers that for all of her “likes” she doesn’t have any real “friends.”

Long story short, she enlists her company’s socially awkward, technophobic marketing genius, Henry (John Cho), to “rebrand” her as a genuine human being.

Much of the dialogue is rapid-fire and clever, if slightly incomprehensible to those not fluent in emoticons, abbreviations and jargon.

Unfortunately, not enough attention was paid to one crucial question: Where can “Selfie” go week after week? As it is, the pilot would make the first act of a passable romantic comedy, a 90-minute distraction, at most.

Meanwhile, TV-themed DVDs available today include “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever,” the 1983 concert special featuring a reunion of the Temptations, Miracles, Marvelettes and Vandellas that also introduced Michael Jackson’s moonwalk to the world.

Football switch Making a mid-season coaching change was the right call for the Jayhawks.

O

nly the timing was something of a surprise.

Four games into his third season as Kansas University’s football coach, Charlie Weis — and everyone else — saw the writing on the wall. The Jayhawks had finished their game on Saturday with a zero on the scoreboard for the second time this year. With a record of six wins and 22 losses and no prospects for improvement in sight, Athletic Director Sheahon Zenger decided to try to cut his — and the Jayhawks’ — losses by sending Weis on his way.

It was the right decision. Clearly, Zenger had decided the KU football program would be better off without Weis than with him. Mid-season dismissals are awkward but, with KU as the projected underdog in every game for the rest of the season, the team really has nowhere to go but up.

Zenger was right to acknowledge Weis’ success with “several facets of our football program.” The team made academic progress under his leadership and he wasn’t afraid to dismiss players who didn’t measure up to his standards of behavior. However, as Zenger also noted, “we have not made the on-thefield progress we believe we should.”

Many KU fans would consider that an understatement. The KU football program has better financial support from KU alumni than it probably deserves, but the recent revolving door of coaches has cost the program. Zenger’s assessment on Sunday that “the program has lost support at all levels” was a not-so-surprising wake-up call.

The appointment of defensive coordinator Clint Bowen as interim coach may re-energize both the team and its fans for the remainder of the season.

The appointment is an opportunity for Bowen, who grew up in Lawrence and played for KU, to showcase his skills as a head coach, but it seems unfair to base any decision on whether to retain him as coach on his record during the rest of this broken season against tough Big 12 competition.

If Bowen is able to inspire his players and perhaps win a game or two, he certainly deserves consideration for the job, but, KU needs to give serious thought to its football hiring strategy.

Officials need to gather some input and decide exactly what they are looking for in a coach: maybe an up-and-coming talent, someone who is in demand, not someone who is looking for a job.

KU is known as a basketball school, but it shouldn’t give up on football. It’s possible, as Kansas State has shown, to turn a struggling football program around. It’s important that KU does its best to make that happen here.

Who will fight ISIS on the ground?

Last week I praised President Obama’s important speech at the United Nations that urged world leaders to reject “the cancer of violent extremism.”

But, like many Americans, I voiced concern about whether his strategy — including bombing ISIS and al-Qaida targets in Syria — could achieve his objectives.

I’d like to examine this question further.

First, the president had no choice but to organize a global campaign against ISIS. We can debate whether he could have prevented the group’s rise had he armed moderate Syrian rebels two years ago, as all of his top security team advised, but that is water under the bridge.

The rapid territorial expansion of ISIS across large swaths of Syria and Iraq, propelled by thousands of Western and other foreign jihadis, had to be stopped.

Left unchecked, ISIS fighters would have invaded Iraqi Kurdistan, threatened Baghdad, and tried to sow chaos in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. Their successes have made them a global magnet for foreign jihadis: Key al-Qaida affiliates are declaring fealty to ISIS, core al-Qaida has now been jolted alive by the competition, and Western jihadis are being trained to return home with bomb-making skills.

Airstrikes vital, but…

Iraq’s army collapsed before the ISIS onslaught, and it has no air force, so the initial U.S. bombing strikes in Iraq were vital; they checked ISIS’s forward motion. If you follow that logic, it also makes sense to hit the group in its command centers in Syria, where it has built up the core of its ersatz state, its self-described caliphate.

But we all know that airstrikes alone don’t defeat terrorists. The United States rightly isn’t going to send troops to fight ISIS in Syria

The much bigger question is who will provide the ground troops in Syria that could take advantage of American airstrikes and push back ISIS.” or Iraq, nor are any of Iraq’s Arab neighbors. Yet Obama has said ISIS must be “degraded, and ultimately destroyed.” So who is going to defeat ISIS? In the short term, the answer is “No one.” Despite the hoopla —and the CNN headlines blaring “War with ISIS: What does victory look like?” — this is not a conventional war.

The jihadis will be vanquished only when the Arab world resolves the internal problems that are causing the current implosions.

But the United States can’t afford to let ISIS expand exponentially while Arab countries struggle to sort themselves out. This is what Obama has belatedly realized.

‘Aggressive containment’ So rather than a “war on ISIS,” I prefer the term coined by Ryan Crocker, the distinguished former ambassador to Iraq and Syria, who calls the strategy “aggressive containment.”

“We won’t defeat them, but we can keep them badly enough off balance to prevent attacks on the United States,” Crocker told me.

“That may not save Syria, but it may save us.”

At the moment, aggressively containing ISIS in Iraq

will require more American airstrikes. Kurdish peshmerga fighters (with an influx of new arms expedited by Washington) are ready to protect their region, but the broken Iraqi army — corrupted by political appointments at the highest levels — is just getting back on its feet.

The hope is that a new government in Baghdad may be able to reach out to disaffected urban Sunnis and Sunni tribal leaders; they were so alienated by the previous prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, that some of them tolerated, or even abetted, the ISIS advance.

New Iraq leadership There are encouraging signs that the new leader, Haidar al-Abadi, grasps the need for a more inclusive government. Most important, he is at least talking about setting up national guard forces composed of Sunni tribesmen who would be willing to fight ISIS in western Iraq.

Some of these same tribes fought al-Qaida in 2007, backed by U.S. forces, but felt betrayed when Maliki later broke his promise to incorporate them into Iraq’s security forces. If they could be persuaded they have a role (and salaries) under Abadi, they might not only push ISIS back, but might also enlist related tribesmen in Syria to join the struggle.

“We must do everything possible to ensure that ISIS doesn’t gain more ground,” Crocker said, while Abadi regroups Iraqi forces. Whether or not Abadi really makes a serious effort to woo back Sunnis will be critical to aggressively containing ISIS. It will also require the rebuilding of a professional Iraq army and the disbanding of Shiite militias that have harassed Sunnis. This is a huge task — with uncertain prospects — and one that is just getting underway.

The much bigger ques-

tion is who will provide the ground troops in Syria that could take advantage of American airstrikes and push back ISIS. Obama’s plan to train 5,400 vetted “moderate” rebels over the next year is too little and too late to make a difference.

Moreover, some of the vetted groups have denounced the first wave of airstrikes because they didn’t also target the regime of Bashar alAssad.

These moderate rebels believe the U.S. strikes will help Assad retain power; they think the bombing of his most radical opponents will enable him to finish wiping out the rest. They also fear it will help him take the key city of Aleppo, which they are now contesting with ISIS and the regime. Assad is happy to kill moderates but has left ISIS mostly untouched.

Challenge in Syria So “aggressive containment” will face its biggest challenge in Syria. Top Syria expert Josh Landis, at the University of Oklahoma, believes the United States might have to threaten to bomb Assad’s forces if they try to take advantage of the allied airstrikes to destroy the moderates. In effect this would mean forcing a cease-fire between vetted groups and the regime, which might ultimately facilitate negotiations.

This would leave the rebels in their northern sector free to take on ISIS, in a Syria that is effectively partitioned. That might be one way to provide the ground troops to degrade ISIS and other jihadi forces there.

What’s certain is that the struggle to contain and defang violent Islamist extremism in the Mideast will be a long one, requiring a nimble strategy from Obama and whoever succeeds him in 2017.

Newsworthy event

To the editor: I recently read an editorial concerning the City Commission needing to be cautious before granting a new business a sidewalk seating area. One of the points in the editorial was, since this was not a restaurant, would other businesses then want the same access. My question is why would retail businesses wait ?

If there are rules against using the sidewalk, they apparently do not apply to some downtown stores that consistently have their merchandise on display on the sidewalk. This is not just in the area that would be set aside for a dining area. They also put merchandise near the meters, causing a very narrow walkway that pedestrians are forced to go through. That is if no one stops to look at the merchandise, because most times there is no room to get by other people.

To the editor: Sept. 21, along with at least 70 other residents of Kansas, Missouri and the surrounding states, I participated in the People’s Climate March in New York City. Despite its overwhelming success in marshaling over 400,000 marchers, media coverage of the demonstration was lackluster. Many mainstream outlets only briefly mentioned the march while others, including the JournalWorld, had no coverage whatsoever.

Given the size and scale of both the march and the climate issue, the lack of media coverage seems to be a gross oversight. Marchers came from all 50 states and included celebrities, politicians, and even U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. We united in New York to show our concern over the international community’s inaction on climate change.

Along with demonstrators in 160 other countries around the world, we

spoke loudly and clearly: We will not sit idly by and let the only planet we have fall to ruins. We refuse to fiddle while Rome burns. We demand that our politicians and business leaders take meaningful action before it is too late.

Such a loud public outcry should reverberate in people’s ears, and the press is essential to that task. Four hundred thousand citizens assembling freely is what democracy looks like. It requires everyone’s participation to make it work.

Vote on Catalan independence halted Madrid — An independence vote set for November in Spain’s powerful Catalonia region was halted Monday by the nation’s constitutional court after the central government mounted a legal case saying the planned referendum would be illegal.

The court’s unanimous decision to hear the government’s case automatically suspended the Nov. 9 vote from going forward until the court hears arguments and makes a decision, a court statement said. That process could take months or years.

New Afghan leader paves way for pact Kabul, Afghanistan — Afghanistan swore in Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai as its second elected president on Monday, embarking on a new era with a national unity government poised to confront a resilient Taliban insurgency by signing an agreement with the United States that would guarantee a continuing American military presence.

The new Afghan government was expected Tuesday to sign a security agreement that provides a legal framework for the United States to keep about 9,800 troops in the country to train, advise and assist Afghan national security forces after the current international combat mission ends Dec. 31. That number of troops is expected to be cut in half by the end of 2015, and the U.S. would leave only about 1,000 in a security office after the end of 2016.

Clayton, Mo. — A drug case stemming from an arrest made by the Ferguson police officer who killed an unarmed 18-year-old is on hold while a grand jury reviews the shooting.

A judge approved prosecutors’ request Monday to send the case involving an arrest by officer Darren Wilson to a St. Louis County grand jury. But a spokesman for Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch later said that the case is “on hold” until Wilson’s status is resolved.

The suspect’s attorney wants the drug distribution charge dismissed because he doesn’t expect Wilson, who didn’t attend the preliminary hearing, to show up in court.

A separate grand jury is reviewing evidence in the August shooting death of Michael Brown.

Washington — Once shunned by the United States, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi rode a wave of enthusiasm and popular support Monday to the White House, where he kicked off a two-day visit with President Barack Obama.

The two leaders sought to put a brave face on the relationship despite widespread concerns that U.S.-Indian ties have frayed in recent years.

Modi’s visit started with a private dinner with Obama on Monday evening, the day after thousands of Indian-Americans flocked to New York’s Madison Square Garden for a rare chance to see the new leader of the world’s largest democracy. The dazzling Bollywood-style

Fall is the season for choosing health plan

Kylee Bliss was a sophomore in high school when she suffered her first concussion at basketball tryouts. Bliss didn’t follow her doctor’s recommendation of strict bed rest. The next day, she convinced her parents she was ready to go back to school.

Her symptoms didn’t improve, but three or four weeks later she decided she was sick of not playing basketball, so she told her doctor and athletic trainer she wasn’t having headaches. They cleared her to play.

During her third game back for Overland Park’s Blue Valley High School, she dove for a loose ball and collided with an opposing player, hitting her

head on the floor. Later, while preparing to take the game-tying free throw, she couldn’t even see the rim. That second concussion ended her athletic career.

Three years later, Bliss, now a freshman at Kansas University, still suffers from daily headaches, frequent migraines and sensitivity to light and sound.

But she’s taking what she learned to try to prevent others from encountering the same fate. Last year, she started the HeadsUp Foundation for PCS, which raises awareness about the dangers of post-concussion syndrome. She’s getting ready to host her second annual trail run benefit in October.

“The only reason I’m in this position is because I didn’t know the effects concussions could

have,” said Bliss, an 18-year-old pre-med student. “If I can keep one other person from going through the same thing or making the choices I did, it would be worth it. It would be the silver lining of my concussions.”

While athletes are often warned against returning soon after a concussion, they sometimes come back before they’re ready. That puts them at an increased risk for post-concussion syndrome, which is when symptoms continue at least three months after the injury. The symptoms can include headaches, nausea, fatigue, depression and memory loss.

“I treat concussions like any other injury. I tell athletes, ‘If

Fall is here. Shorter days, cooler weather, football season, and the annual process of selecting a health insurance plan. Whether you are choosing from employer-sponsored plans or participating in the insurance exchange, this is a key decision that affects many of us. I’m taking the opportunity in our weekly column to discuss several aspects of the fall enrollMeyer ment season to clarify some questions.

The Affordable Care Act requires nearly all businesses to provide some basic level of essential health benefits. These offerings generally have an annual renewal time, and for many, that becomes January 1. The three months preceding the January 1 enrollment is generally the time during which employees are asked to make their selection.

In the past, this process was fairly routine. In today’s environment, evaluating various options requires research and forethought before signing up. For one, special attention needs to be paid to what the health plan offers in terms of coverage of providers and hospitals. New fathers need support too, now more than ever

atherhood has never been easy. But with all the societal pressures of today, is it more difficult now than it’s ever been?

Carrie Wendel-Hummell, a doctoral candidate at Kansas University, sheds some light on this question with her recent research study into the effects cultural stressors have on new parents’ mental health.

Contrary to popular belief, fathers are not immune to postpartum depression. While their mood disorders may not be caused by hormonal changes, like

in some mothers, men can still be impacted by the pressures of modern parenting. That’s particularly true if they have a previous history of mental illness, inadequate social support, marital distress or low socioeconomic status.

About 10 percent of new fathers are at risk of developing depression after the birth of a child, about three times the risk for men in general.

One risk factor that separates men from women is employment status, Wendel-Hummell says, as fathers often feel more pressure to be

breadwinners. Throw in the fact that men in 2014 are less likely to be the sole earner and expected to play more of a parenting role at home and you have a recipe for stress.

In her study, WendelHummell interviewed 17 new fathers with signs of mood disorders, and compared their stories to a sample of new mothers. The dads tried to work hard to further their careers while, at the same time, building a relationship with their children at the end of the day, even though they were exhausted from their jobs. They rarely took more than a week or two of paternity leave, while some got mixed messages about whether they were allowed any time off at all (many employers are

required to give new mothers — and fathers — up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave).

Wendel-Hummell’s research didn’t surprise me. After Lily’s birth in October, I took three days off of work, mostly because I couldn’t afford to do otherwise. Those first few weeks back on the job were tough, because I wanted to be at home bonding with my new baby and helping my fiancee. We also lived 500 miles from our families in the Chicago area, so social isolation was another stressor. I, at least, got to return to

work and interact with other adults.

Wendel-Hummell also found that fathers can suffer from the relationship changes that parenthood often brings. Both parents are generally overwhelmed after the birth of a child, though men’s natural inclination to stoicism can cause them added problems.

Emotional impact of video games can lead to aggression Dear Dr. Wes and Kyra: My son has played video games for many years, maybe more than he should. But I’ve noticed as he’s gone through puberty he seems to be getting so involved in them that if things don’t go his way in a game, he’s actually angry. He broke the controller the other day because he was so upset.

These games don’t seem that fun to me.

Wes: Except for World of Warcraft — which I wrote prophetically in July of 2006 was akin to video crack — I’ve never freaked out about video games and teens.

But I’ve changed my mind in the last couple of years. I now think they’re problematic for several reasons, including the one you note.

New research (see facebook.com/FamilyPsychologicalServices) and my clinical experience suggest that violent content doesn’t make

kids more violent or lacking in empathy. But the actual emotional experience of game play often makes them angrier and, at times, aggressive. I recently had a young man smash his laptop because he became so enraged at Call of Duty — and the poor laptop wasn’t even involved.

I was on on the radio in August talking about gaming as just one of several factors that take boys off the path of success in school and relationships (see “Building Better Boys” on the media page of dr-wes. com). Early in the show, a 40-year-old gamer called and, shall we say, begged to differ. In fact, he was pretty upset that we’d even chosen to discuss problem gaming.

He argued that he’d just spent 300 hours gaming in July alone, and his life was quite on track. Three hundred hours. In July.

Of note, much like employer-sponsored plans, the offerings do vary by rates of premium as well as co-pays and deductibles. It is vital that one pays close attention to the options because some of the lower premium plans also include higher co-pays and deductibles.

This could be financially challenging if heavy utilization of the plan occurs.

At this point we believe that LMH will be included in most of the plans offered in Kansas on the federal exchange.

Locally there are resources available to help individuals with the sign-up process, and we will keep you apprised of those to assist in enrollment for the 2015 health insurance exchange.

Several years ago in Kansas, individuals and families who qualified for Kansas Medicaid were assigned to one of three insurance carriers. LMH participates in all three of the plans offered. Most of the practices in Douglas County participate in them as well, but some physician groups have chosen not to participate in all of them. Attention should be paid, once you are assigned, to make sure that the provider you are using is a member of the assigned Medicaid health plan.

What we learned from the first year of the insurance exchange and by some of the changes made recently in many employer-sponsored plans is that knowing your plan is essential. Becoming a prudent health care consumer is very important to maximize your benefit

and includes our local physicians.

Additionally, plans vary with the amount of co-pays and deductibles.

Personal budgeting is essential so that you are prepared to pay them.

What may mean paying a little more in an initial premium for a lower deductible and co-pay may be the choice you make.

Or, if you feel like utilization of your health plan might not be significant, then you may choose a plan with a lower monthly premium. Careful planning is critical.

The Affordable Care Act also provides for those who currently do not have health insurance or who may not have an employer-sponsored option to use the federal insurance exchange called the Marketplace. This is an opportunity to not only enroll in a health plan but potentially take advantage of federal subsidies.

As you may recall, last year at this time, the federal exchanges offered in Kansas had significant enrollment issues related to their website and enrollment. Much work has been done on the federal government’s behalf to change and improve this process. By the spring of 2014 many of the challenges were corrected. So now we have our second year of the federal exchange with sign-up coming in the near future.

play video games, and about 90 percent of those games contain mature content. Though my siblings don’t play them, they have a difficult time avoiding M-rated games at friends’ houses, and they resent not knowing as much about them as their social circles.

Research is inconclusive as to how video gaming impacts the brain or whether it increases the likelihood of violent acts. Some studies show teens who play video games are more likely to find aggressive responses appropriate for negative experiences than non-gamers, but others note that a variety of confounding variables — violence in the home, abuse and mental illness—may skew the results. Research at Oxford suggests that my brother and the laptop-smashing guy Wes describes aren’t anomalies. In the study, gamers describe aggres-

While all this might seem a little depressing, there are reasons people keep having babies (other than to repopulate the planet, of course).

As I can attest from being the proud father of a nearly 1-year-old daughter, I never before realized how deep my love for another person could go. Like when I walk into a room full of strangers and Lily shyly puts her head on my shoulder. Or when I come home from work and she greets me with the biggest, most authentic smile imaginable.

Or when she doesn’t want to go to bed but instantly falls asleep after I snuggle up next to her.

“Parents say, ‘I knew it was going to be a lot of work, but I didn’t know how much work.’

They also said, ‘I knew I would love my child, but I had no idea how much I would love them,’” Wendel-Hummel said.

“They had no idea how much capacity for love they had and their children would give them.”

She says parenting nowadays can be summed up in the title of a new book by author Jennifer Senior: “All Joy and No Fun.” Perfect.

Besides ending her basketball career, Bliss’ concussion changed the teen’s life in other ways.

She had to cut down her class load significantly because of problems with focus and concentration. She couldn’t go to concerts or movies because of her light and sound sensitivities.

She tried every medication imaginable for her symptoms.

But she eventually decided to stop feeling sorry for herself. She came home from therapy one day and told her mother she wanted to start a foundation.

“She just walked in the door, and I saw a smile

on her face that I probably hadn’t seen since before the injury,” said her mom, Ginger Bliss. “But I don’t know that either one of us knew how to create a foundation.”

They eventually did, holding their first benefit trail run last November and raising about $12,000.

And while that money went to future-minded concussion research, Bliss hopes to raise awareness here and now, as well. So what would she tell other athletes?

“Don’t lie about your symptoms, because no sport is worth having a headache every day or giving up your brain function,” she said. “You can do a lot without sports, but you can’t do a lot without your brain.”

The proceeds from the HeadsUp Foundation’s first trail run were granted to Rippee for a research project about how diets affect post-concussion syndrome. Rippee says he is grateful for Bliss’ support for research because of how little is known about the syndrome.

Radio gig caps Bowen’s wild first day

QB play now Bowen’s problem Not long after concluding a remarkably inspirational introductory press conference Monday in George Mrkonic Auditorium, Kansas University interim head football coach Clint Bowen was on a Big 12 teleconference taking more questions.

He didn’t duck those either.

A few days ago, Bowen was coaching a defense that has superstar Ben Heeney manning the most important position, middle linebacker.

Now Bowen is responsible for the entire team, which includes an offense that scored a combined three points in losses to Duke and Texas, an offense triggered by a relative newcomer. What are Bowen’s plans for injecting life into an offense that hasn’t gotten off the ground for fourplus seasons?

“I don’t think it’s much of a secret,” Bowen said. “My old college coach, Glen Mason, used to always say the two most important people in the program are the head coach and the quarterback, and it’s not in that order.”

Quarterback didn’t become Montell Cozart’s primary position until his junior year at Bishop Miege High, and it shows.

He has a strong arm and fast legs, but a strong arm becomes so much weaker when a quarterback throws off his back foot, as Cozart so often has. When an inexperienced trigger man struggles to read defenses, his legs slow down and he never has a chance to use his speed.

For now, Bowen will stay with Cozart, a QB so often quickly under fire because of an offensive line shy of quickness, and hope that offensive coordinator John Reagan can find ways to put him in positions to improve his performance. In a particularly rough performance, Cozart completed 12 of 31 passes for 140 yards in Saturday’s 23-0 loss to Texas. He threw four interceptions and still showed too strong an affinity for the sideline, via the run and pass.

So much work to be done. So little time. Training-camp-like teaching and game preparation all squeezed into eight games in nine weeks, and just three of them are at home.

Clint Bowen, meet Mount Everest. Now hurry up and climb it.

“The bottom line: The young man, Montell Cozart, knows the quarterback’s got to perform,” Bowen said. “Unfortunately, that’s the nature of that position.

So right there, the offense has got to start with him.

We talked about it with him, and he understands that that’s his responsibility, and there are plays that have to be made, and you don’t have to make the great ones, but you do have to make the plays that are there.”

Friends, fans, family and former players packed the Salty Iguana Mexican Restaurant on Monday night for interim Kansas University football coach Clint Bowen’s first appearance on the weekly “Hawk Talk” radio show with Bob Davis.

It was the final act of a whirlwind day for Bowen, who officially took over for the fired Charlie Weis on

Sunday morning. And, as far as first days go, it could not have gone much better.

“Clint Bowen represents the best of what KU football has been over the years,” KU athletic director Sheahon Zenger, unable to find a seat at “Hawk Talk,” told the Journal-World. “And it’s been incredible to watch the response by players, coaches, staff and alumni.”

Maybe it was just the familiar faces in the crowd or the lingering joy of all that

had just happened to him, but Bowen certainly looked comfortable throughout the day Monday. First was an introductory news conference at 9 a.m. By 9:30, dozens within the athletic department were buzzing about the impression Bowen made. After that was a 10 a.m. Big 12 coaches conference call, when Bowen answered questions about everything from his new job to recruiting to West Virginia.

By Monday evening, after

another spirited practice, Bowen was there at Salty Iguana with a headset and a smile.

Asked by Davis where the radio show ranked in the scheme of the day’s events, Bowen smiled and said, “This was the highlight of my day.” It wasn’t the first time he said that.

And so the Bowen era had begun. Interim coach or not, Bowen’s energy seems

The results of both will be in the starting spotlight tonight.

For the Royals, it’s “Big Game James” — James Shields, the centerpiece of a deal with the Tampa Bay Rays that finally pushed the long-downtrodden franchise into the postseason for the

first time in 29 years. For the A’s, it’s Jon Lester — the postseason star of the Red Sox last season who was acquired

by Oakland at the trading deadline just for this moment.

The one-game AL wildcard playoff. The winner advances to face the Los Angeles Angels in the best-of-five division series Thursday. The loser trudges away into the offseason.

“I’ve only been here for two years,” Shields said Monday, “but when I got traded over here, I knew the magnitude of what this organization was

headed for. And when I got here, walking around the city and talking to the fans and really relishing the 29 years, it’s a special moment.”

The teams share plenty of similarities: pop-gun offenses backed by strong starting pitching and two of the dominant bullpens in baseball.

They also share a significant difference: Oakland has plenty of postseason experience, making it three straight years, while Kansas City has languished near the cellar for decades.

Charles, Chiefs hammer Patriots Kansas City, Mo. (ap) — It made sense that Andy Reid spoke in baseball metaphors after Kansas City whipped the New England Patriots on Monday night, with the Royals poised to end a long playoff drought just across the parking lot from Arrowhead Stadium.

He may have stretched things a bit when it came to Jamaal Charles, though.

“It’s a heck of a thing to bring 25 off the bench as a relief pitcher,” Reid said.

“That’s a pretty good player.

To add him back to the mix is something.”

Relief pitcher? How about staff ace.

Charles returned from an ankle injury to score three touchdowns, Tom Brady was picked off twice by the opportunistic Chiefs, and Kansas City routed New England 41-14 to hand Bill Belichick one of his worst losses as coach of the Patriots.

Charles, who missed last week’s win in Miami with a sprained ankle, ran for 92 yards and a score. The Pro Bowl running back also caught two short touchdown passes from Alex Smith, who had 248 yards passing and three touchdowns in a sharp performance before a raucous crowd.

“Coach said he was going to look for me, and see how it feels during the game,” Charles said, “and I guess I started feeling like myself. He didn’t want to take me out.”

The Chiefs (2-2) ended a four-game skid at Arrowhead Stadium dating to last season by making things miserable on Brady, who had one of his two picks returned for a touchdown.

Morris twins still preach ‘FOE’ Marcus and Markieff Morris continue to live by the motto they preached at Kansas University: “Family Over Everything.”

Mentioning “FOE” several times Monday at Phoenix Suns Media Day, the two former KU forwards also discussed details of their four-year NBA contract extensions worth a combined $52 million.

Torneden earns HAAC honor Baldwin City — Baker University senior running back Camren Torneden, former quarterback at Free State High, received another honor to his list of football accomplishments Monday when he was named HAAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
