Basketball coach gets his job back
FABLED FUNGUS
By Peter Hancock phancock@ljworld.com
Wildly successful mushroom hunter won’t reveal his secret spots, but he will part with a handful of helpful tips
Mike Lewis, the popular boys basketball coach at Lawrence High School whose firing last week ignited public outcry at a school board meeting, has been reinstated as the head coach, Lawrence school district officials announced Friday. That announcement came after district and LHS administrators — at the urging of the Lawrence Lewis school board — agreed to meet with Lewis and reconsider his status as the coach.

Ryan Gregg crawls on his belly on the wet, cold ground one recent evening on a friend’s rural property. Twigs and grass stick in his shaggy hair and mud has caked his boots. He’s eye level with it now: spring’s annual fungal gold. The hunt for morel mushrooms, their season spanning barely a month here, has enraptured many. Prized for their nutty, meaty flavor, the conically shaped ridgy mushrooms inspire ventures into the woods and along riverbanks for weeks between late March and mid May. Few accept the challenge with as much aplomb

‘Ad Astra Center’ tops list of names for new rec center
Morel hunting
N
early two dozen people have suggested “Ad Astra Center” as the name for the new recreation center at Rock Chalk Park sports complex on the city’s west side. But many others suggested names associated with the Kanza prairie, sunflowers or Jayhawks. The city of Lawrence this week released the names submitted by the public through the city’s website, along with some comments. City commissioners plan to decide on a name when they meet Tuesday. All told, the city received 107 web entries for suggested names, but only 15 received multiple mentions. Ad Astra Center received 23 votes, followed by Kanza Center with 16 mentions. Rounding out the top five: Rock Chalk Park or Rock Chalk Recreation Center, with 11; OneLawrence, with 10; and Lawrence Sports Center or Lawrence Recreation Center, with seven.
Where to look: Morels emerge near trees like cottonwoods, ash, elms and cedars and also proliferate near lake and river beds. Be careful not to trespass on private property when hunting. How to pick: Use a knife to slice the stem, or give the stem a pinch to separate the mushroom. Storage: Mesh bags and baskets are preferred during the hunt. Back home, morels keep well in paper bags in a refrigerator.
