Hello and welcome to the Lawrence Batley Theatre.

You join us at a time of change as Victoria, our Director for the last 11 years, steps down. Victoria has made a tremendous difference to the theatre by developing the programme, increasing audiences, building community partnerships and instigating our sister project, Creative Scene, in North Kirklees. Having worked side-by-side with Victoria for the last 8 years I look forward to holding the theatre during this change and welcoming you to a season full of ambition, curiosity and celebration.

Our 25th year will continue our commitment to bringing the best live performance to Huddersfield, supporting local talent, working creatively with communities and developing our fantastic building.

LBT has been the centre of my life for over a decade and it has been a joy, a challenge and most of all a great privilege. I am delighted to close my tenure here by opening our 25th year with this brilliant programme.

It’s jam packed full of artistic invention, great entertainment and live performance which reflects our place in our time.

I’d like to thank all our audiences, artists, staff, volunteers and partners who have made the last 11 years at LBT truly special.

I have enjoyed it tremendously and I hope you continue to enjoy it too.

An evening of spoken word, music and theatre in the cosy warmth of Queenie’s Coffee Shop, hosted by award-winning spoken word artist Rose Condo.

This evening of very special guests will include Marianne McNamara, Artistic Director of Mikron Theatre Company, chatting about the world premiere of all hands on deck; Huddersfield Thespians performing an extract from Mark Gatiss' queers; spoken word artist Rose Condo giving a taster of her new show the empathy experiment and Sue Miller will be talking about the 20th anniversary of charanga del norte.

Keisha communicates with her reclusive dad through books, letters and symbols. But when the letters stop coming she is forced to venture into his world.

Is empathy facing extinction? Are mobile phones to blame?

Multiple slam winning poet Rose Condo returns with her latest spoken word show. Embarking on a Day of No Mobile Phones, Rose explores tech addiction and compassion using herself as the test subject…think Dr Jekyll meets Dr Seuss.

Join Rose in the final hour of her experiment as she madly tries to capture data, record findings, navigate digital withdrawal and prove her theory that empathy can be saved.

With the use of poetry, looped sounds and storytelling, this piece explores the impact that mental health can have on the family dynamic, particularly within the context of the Black British experience.

An exploration into the mental illness Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) through dance. The piece looks particularly at the inner monologue, rituals and actions of somebody who suffers with OCD, with specific reference to the different types of OCD such as contamination, invasive thoughts and checking.

Why do we seek to please? And how?

Complimenting, flattering, being obedient, doing something really well whilst remaining humble. fawn considers the act of pleasing as an instinctive response to fear, threat and failure. As a solo work, fawn draws parallels between the relationship of pleasing another, pleasing an audience and pleasing oneself – as a person, as a dancer and as a woman.

We can’t stop the future from arriving, no matter what drugs we’re on. But even if nearly every part of us becomes robotic, mechanical fingers crossed we'll still have our minds. Hopefully we'll use them for things like compassion, instead of just chasing what’s ‘better’ like a hamster on a wheel. If we can do that, we’re on the yellow brick road to happiness.

With a little help from monk Gelong Thubten, who explains how the mind works, and neuroscientist Ash Ranpura, who explains where everything that makes us ‘us’ can be found in the brain. how to be human is the show you need to help you upgrade your mind as much as you’ve upgraded your iPhone.

Winner of a Spirit of the Fringe Award and shortlisted for Amnesty International’s Freedom of Expression Award, freeman is inspired by the first man in America to plead insanity as his defence, and sees writer Camilla Whitehill and Strictly Arts examine the unspoken link between mental health and systemic racism.

Throughout time and across waters, from William Freeman to Sarah Reed, six true stories are threaded together and told through physical theatre, spoken word, gospel singing, shadow puppetry and more.

electrolyte is a multi-award winning piece of gig theatre that powerfully explores mental health for a contemporary audience. Whether it be Ellington's Portrait of Louis Armstrong, Bob Mintzer's Latin Dance or some classic vocal charts from the Great American Songbook.

GNUF showcases some of the best talent on four strings from around the world and across the country. As their name suggests, they take the hit songs from decades of Bollywood movies and give them a re-rub through the medium of dhol drums and multiple brass instruments. PARKING If you are arriving by car, follow the signage on the ring road to the Market Hall multi-storey car park on Alfred Street. There is a limited number of parking spaces for disabled badge holders on Queen Street. There is also an area on Queen Street for drop off only.

RAIL AND BUS The rail and bus stations are just a few minutes walk from the theatre. The Free Town Bus stops outside the theatre and runs until 5pm on college days, 3pm during college holidays and 2.49pm on Saturdays 33
