LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

In January of this year I had an incredible opportunity to work on a project in Beijing China. In late 2023 artist Rutherford Chang had an exhibit at the Lawrence Arts Center. “We Buy White Albums” is a collection of over 3,300 original Beatles White Albums. I originally came across Rutherford’s art work via an art magazine. I immediately thought that I’d love to work with this guy and I’d like to help bring this to Lawrence, and so I reached out. Nearly 10 years later we held the exhibition at the Arts Center.

The Lawrence Arts Center was the last stop for “We Buy White Albums”. Rutherford suddenly passed away in January 2025. The estate asked if I would assist in installing and creating an installation guide. It was an honor to add to this part of his retrospective and I was proud to have the Lawrence Arts Center linked to his creative legacy as this exhibition travels the globe.

I love the idea that an exhibition like Rutherford’s can happen in the same space that our Early Childhood Education students, emerging artists, and local artists exhibit their art. This is a space where a wide range of experienced people come to create. While in Beijing and talking with artists, curators, and family of Rutherford’s from across the world; when describing the Lawrence Arts Center to them I found that I genuinely got excited in attempting to illustrate what happens here. Nearly every day you’ll find a confluence of creativity and artists here. I hope you’ll check out the opportunities listed in this catalog and consider joining in the creativity and community we are building here.

If you’re curious about this organization and our programs, you are in luck. This spring we’re offering behind the scenes tours of the Arts Center. This is a chance to see spaces where creativity is abundant. Come on out and see it in action on the following dates:

April 1, 7 pm

April 14, 5:30 pm

April 30, 5:30pm

May 9, 11-noon

May 27, 7pm

If you are Interested in scheduling a customized tour for your group, we can do that too! Contact me, Ben@lawrenceartscenter.org and we’ll make it happen.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin

MK SHULTZ & JILLIAN GRIEVE

Falstaff, a theatre cat, is kicked into the alley after sneaking an unearned bow with the cast of a production of Romeo and Juliet—a scene the audience sees from a backstage perspective. Threatened by mean street rats and defended by alley cat allies, Falstaff narrowly averts an all-out war by inviting both groups to join him backstage to perform his own version of The Pied Piper of Hamelin. McHeath, the rough and tumble leader of the rats, is cast as the mayor, other rats as his accomplices and the rest of the rats as the plague-carrying scourge of Hamelin. The cats are cast as the townspeople, including the big-eyed heroine, Lisette, and her counterpart, the warlike Chedwick. Falstaff, of course, takes the role of the Pied Piper. Mayhem ensues as Falstaff attempts to create believable performances from this raucous group.
