DIREC TOR’S NOTE Welcome to the Lawrence Arts Center’s The Nutcracker, A Kansas Ballet! This production is a Lawrence area wintertime favorite with thousands of performers and audience members across the years going back to 2002. Inspired by the original A Kansas Nutcracker under the vision and direction of Deborah Bettinger and Ric Averill, this year’s production has roots in the arts and culture of Lawrence, Kansas and continues to evolve. Being relatively new to the area, I am honored to lead such a remarkable team and play a part in this local tradition.

Our 2019 production features 143 dancers, 12 musicians, and over 45 designers, technicians, supporting staff, and volunteers working behind the scenes. In addition, we are especially thrilled to again host the marvelous voices of Lawrence Children’s Choir under the direction of Carolyn Welch; the dancers of Lawrence Ballet Theatre under the direction of Cynthia Crews; our guest performers, Jerel Hilding, Tristian Griffin, and John Nguyen; and this year’s orchestra conductor, Raffaele Cipriano.

Since the premiere of A Kansas Nutcracker 17 years ago, there have been so many who have contributed. Thank you to all for making this performance what it is today. To our supportive community, a special thank you for taking pride in this production and coming together each year to make the magic happen. AC T I S Y N OP SI S // C A ST I N O RD E R O F A P P E ARA N CE Our story begins over 150 years ago in Lawrence, KS on Christmas Eve. It’s 1864, the fourth consecutive year of the American Civil War. Preparing for a holiday party hosted by the Stahlbaums, an inventor named Drosselmeyer is in his workshop crafting presents for his grandchildren. One, a wooden Nutcracker, resembles Drosselmeyer’s nephew, Kurt, who is a soldier with the 14th Brooklyn Chasseurs. Meanwhile, the Stahlbaums have finished preparing for their party just moments before the arrival of the first guest. Drosselmeyer arrives mysteriously late to the party and immediately presents the dolls to the children, explaining to Clara that if she takes care of the Nutcracker, the Nutcracker will, in turn, protect her. Fritz, seeing his sister receive more presents, grows jealous and breaks her Nutcracker. Agitated but not disheartened, Drosselmeyer repairs the Nutcracker and quietly leaves it by the tree before departing from the party.

After the party ends and Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum have gone to bed, Clara returns to the living room in search of her Nutcracker soldier. She finds him under the tree and joyfully dances with him until she becomes tired and falls asleep.

She enters a strange dream in which Fritz commands the Mouse Queen and her mice to seize Clara. Drosselmeyer intervenes by summoning the Nutcracker to fight on Clara’s behalf along with a supplementary army of toy soldiers. The Mouse Queen is defeated, and Fritz sees that his destructive ways only brought harm and violence. He repents to Clara who forgives him. Upon victory, both the Nutcracker and Clara are transformed and venture across the land of Kansas.

AC T I I S Y N OP SI S // C A ST I N O RD E R O F A P P E ARA N CE The stor y continues with Clara and the Nutcracker being greeted by various freed Kansan creatures and spirits, who are rejoicing in Clara and the Nutcracker ’s victory over the Mouse Queen. The matriarch of the land, the Hummingbird, coordinates an elaborate ball in celebration of their courageous efforts. After witnessing all the wonders of Kansas, Clara and the Nutcracker reunite for a final dance but are interrupted by Drosselmeyer who tells Clara that, like all things, this must too end. Clara wakes up where she last fell asleep, but the Nutcracker is no longer with her. She senses that something has changed for the better.

DIREC TORS & PROFESSIONAL CAST Hanan Misko (ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, CHOREOGRAPHER) studied at the Kansas City Ballet School and received his BFA from The Juilliard School under the directorship of Lawrence Rhodes.

Hanan has danced with various companies including Storling Dance Theater, Mark Morris Dance Group, the Metropolitan Opera (Faust, Don Giovanni, Orfeo ed Euridice, and Nixon in China), Jessica Lang Dance; and as a company member with Ballet Hispanico, Martha Graham Dance Company, and Nimbus Dance works in New York City. Hanan has served as artistic director for the Fine Arts Summer Academy’s Dance Ensemble in Nashville, TN for the past six years.

He has taught at the Kansas City Ballet School, the Wharton Music Center, The Culture House, in New Jersey public schools’ after school programs, and in The Juilliard School’s C.L.I.M.B. program. He has served as the School of Dance Director at the Lawrence Arts Center since 2013.

Cynthia Crews (ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE LAWRENCE BALLET THEATRE, CHOREOGRAPHER)

started her dance training in Tulsa, Oklahoma with Roman Jasinski and Moscelyn Larkin, acclaimed Ballet Russe stars and co-founders of Tulsa Ballet Theatre. In high school she performed solo roles with Tulsa Civic Ballet, including Tulsa’s very first Clara in The Nutcracker. Cynthia continued her dance education in New York City as a full scholarship student for Joffrey Ballet and Harkness Ballet. She then returned to Oklahoma and received a BFA in Ballet Pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma. Cynthia performed as a principal with Tulsa Ballet Theatre for nine years. Cynthia has performed in and choreographed many community and professional musical productions. Her teaching career started at The School of Tampa Ballet and continued at the Post School of Ballet (Southwest Virginia Ballet Company) and Jasinski Academy, the official school for Tulsa Ballet. Cynthia joined the Lawrence Arts Center in 2004, teaching primarily ballet and pointe. She is founder and artistic director of the Lawrence Ballet Theatre.

Raffaele Cipriano (ORCHESTRA CONDUCTOR) is an Italian conductor, opera coach, composer, and computer scientist. He earned bachelor degrees in piano performance and orchestral conducting at the Conservatories of Padova and Venice, studied at the European Academy of Conducting in Vicenza, and obtained a Master of Music in Collaborative. In 2015 he moved to Lawrence to pursue the DMA in orchestral conducting at the University of Kansas. He has conducted productions for the Lawrence Arts Center, Swarthout Recital Hall, Crafton-Preyer Theatre, and is the artistic and music director of the Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City. He has been the musical director for Lawrence Opera Theater, Music Director at the Good Shepherd Catholic Community in Shawnee and Music Director of the Overland Park Orchestra. Cipriano also has an academic background in information technology, with a PhD in computer science earned at the University of Udine. He is currently working on web-based interactive projects with the aim of bringing state-of-the-art technology into the music world in learning and performing processes.

Samaria Fleig (STAGE MANAGER, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR) After five years in California working

with Coast Kids Theatre, New Vision Theatre Group, and the Star Theatre Co., Samaria made her way back to the Sunflower State and graduated from Emporia State University with her BFA. She has found her home here in Lawrence and at the Lawrence Arts Center. Working with young artists and technicians teaches her something new every day. She is so very thankful for her amazing husband, Jonathan, her incredible mom, and the remarkable Sarahs.

Tristian Griffin (GUEST ARTIST/DANCER) was born and raised in Kansas City, MO. He trained at Kansas City Ballet and Crescendo Conservatory. In 2014, he graduated from Texas Christian University with a BFA in Ballet and an English minor. Shortly thereafter, he joined and danced for Garth Fagan Dance Company for three years. More recently, he was given the opportunity to perform with the Metropolitan Opera House and at the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Aside from dancing professionally, he has also taught in various settings including classes through Em’s Spotlight and H.A.L.O. (Helping Art Liberate Orphans) Foundation for underprivileged children at several Kansas City community centers. He was selected for the Charlotte Street Foundation’s 2018-2019 Artist-in-Residency program.

Jerel Hilding (GUEST ARTIST/DANCER) was a principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet for 15 years,

performing in works by many of the most influential choreographers of the last 100 years, including George Balanchine, William Forsythe, Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp, Jerome Robbins, Frederic Ashton, John Cranko, Kurt Jooss, Leonide Massine, and Gerald Arpino. Jerel began his dance training in New Orleans while earning a BA in musicology at Louisiana State University in New Orleans (now the University of New Orleans). He has been a professor of dance at the University of Kansas since 1990 where he teaches all levels of ballet, pointe, pas de deux, and music for dancers, and choreographs for the University Dance Company.

John Nguyen (GUEST ARTIST/DANCER) was born and raised in Wichita KS. John graduated

from KU with a BA in dance. He is currently working in Lawrence as an independent contractor and dancing alongside the House of Dragon dance crew. John’s favorite style of dance is modern.

Erin McElroy (COSTUME DESIGNER & WARDROBE/LEAD) has been designing and creating costumes for over 15 years. She received her BFA at KU (2009) and her MFA at the University of Georgia (2012), both in theater design with an emphasis in costumes. She has been designing and teaching at the Arts Center since 2017. Credits include Wizard of Oz, Oliver, Willy Wonka, and three summers of SYT including She Kills Monsters, The Little Mermaid, Tales of Robin Hood, The Odyssey, and All in the Timing. This is her third year as Lead Costumer for The Kansas Nutcracker.

Susan Rendall (COSTUME DESIGNER) Though currently retired, Susan Rendall has enjoyed

many years as a costume shop manager. She has designed and costumed for the University Dance Company and the Lawrence Arts Center. She is challenged and pleased to costume dancers, children and adults. Susan is also an avid gardener and Master Gardener.

Jason Badgett (LIGHTING DESIGNER) is a filmmaker and theatre professional residing in

Kansas City. Jason studied Film and Media at the University of Kansas. He has been involved in multiple feature films, television series and documentaries, working as a production sound mixer and editor. In 2010, Jason joined the Lawrence Arts Center technical staff.

As a theatre technician, Jason has served as a lighting designer, sound engineer, projectionist, and stage manager for theatrical productions and events. Jason enjoys working with the variety of productions and artists at the Arts Center and in the Lawrence community.

Tammy Keiser (SCENIC DESIGNER) Tammy’s work in arts education spans over 25 years, reaching preschools, senior centers, detention centers, and homeless shelters as well as multiple college programs in KC and surrounding areas. Tammy’s set and costume designs have shaped over 350 productions, and her love of the process of design, from research to implementation, guides her to design 8-10 productions a year.
