DIRECTOR'S NOTE For nearly 40 years, Lawndale Art Center has presented and supported the work of Houston area artists. Critical to this effort is The Big Show, an annual juried competition open to artists practicing within a 100-mile radius of Lawndale. On behalf of Lawndale and the participating artists, I would like to thank the juror of the 2017 Big Show, Toby Kamps, Director and Chief Curator of the Blaffer Art Museum, Houston. Kamps brought extraordinary energy and enthusiasm to the jurying process. This year’s iteration exemplified the importance of providing a platform for all artists living and working in and around Houston. It was a special pleasure to welcome Kamps’s organizing theme for the exhibition, “The Rate of Change,” which sought to capture the essence of the here and now—in its myriad forms – manifested in artworks created within the last change-filled year. We would like to recognize the 549 artists who made the effort to submit one artwork each for consideration of the juror. From this group, 187 artists are represented in the exhibition and catalog. Many recognized and under-recognized artists comprised this year’s Big Show, resulting in an electrifying mix of work that attracted nearly double the visitors that Lawndale anticipates for this annual exhibition.
2
Many individuals came together to ensure the success of The Big Show. Lawndale is grateful to the tremendous efforts of Michael Bhichitkul, Jonathan Clarke, Eric Thayer, and Myke Venable who spent seven full days installing the works salon-style. Lauren Lohman, Administrative Assistant, coordinated a range of exhibition and catalog logistics with ease and grace. Emily Fens, Gallery Attendant, energetically aided in efforts to install and record the exhibition, in addition to welcoming visitors to the show. We are grateful to ttweak for the bold and beautiful logo and to graphic designer Bruce Chao for his work on the catalog. Finally, we thank Alex Barber for photographing the installation and James Beard at Mystic Multiples for printing the catalog. The Big Show would not be possible without the support of many individuals. Lawndale is particularly grateful to Kathrine G. McGovern and The John P. McGovern Foundation, as well as to the Board of Directors for their contributing efforts to this vital exhibition. Stephanie Mitchell Executive Director
