The Big Show – originally titled the East End Show -- began as a juried competition open to Houston-based artists in 1984. Thirty-two years later, this exhibition continues to shed light on the many talented artists working – often unrecognized – in our community, and is representative of Lawndale’s many and faceted efforts to support living artists. On behalf of Lawndale and our Programming Committee, I would like to thank this year’s jurors Apsara DiQuinzio, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and Phyllis C. Wattis MATRIX Curator at BAMPFA, and Tina Kukielski, Executive Director of ART21. It was a special pleasure of mine to extend the invitation to Tina and Apsara; I have known both since the early 2000s when we worked together in the curatorial department at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Their passion and commitment to contemporary art and artists is truly exemplary, and I am personally grateful for the consideration that they lent to the jurying process and the care to which they curated the exhibition. We would like to recognize all 517 artists who made the effort to submit their artworks for review. There are many familiar and unfamiliar names among the eighty-seven artists who were selected for this iteration of The Big Show, and I am hopeful that the resulting exhibition will draw a fresh response from our loyal attendees while attracting a new and diverse audience.
Many individuals came together to make The Big Show possible. Daniel Cardoza conceived of the announcement and catalogue design, and we thank him and Brian Murcia for their efforts in coordinating the production of these items. We thank Adam Clay for photographing The Big Show and Ronald Jones for producing a video from footage of the exhibition preview. Dennis Nance skillfully coordinated the online submission and jurying process, in addition to aspects related to the installation. We thank Dennis, along with Cinthia Gomez, Myke Venable, Jonathan Clark, Elizabeth Cloud and Nick Jee for their collective effort to hang the work at the curators’ direction. Emily Link gracefully coordinated behind-the-scenes efforts to make the exhibition preview and opening reception fun and seemingly effortless, including the coordination of our in-kind donations and our many volunteers.

Jurors’ Statement With a record number of submissions to this year’s The highlights a group of evocative photographs, videos, and Big Show, we were able to see a wide swathe of contribusculptures that situate visitors within a hybrid terrain that is tions by Houston-based artists. The spacious O’Quinn Gallery opens with a salon hang of enlivened painting in a number of distinct registers. A significant number of black-and-white works are grouped together along one long wall finding singularity among a strong graphic impulse. Along the opposite and adjacent walls colorful abstractions predominate, in scales both small and large, expressing a wide range of bold, creative palettes. Apsara DiQuinzio joined BAMPFA in the fall of 2012, and since then has organized over a dozen exhibitions, including Color Shift; Ballet of Heads: The Figure in the Collection, and MATRIX exhibitions with Nicole Eisenman, Paz Errázuriz, Anna Maria Maiolino, Geta Bratescu, John Zurier, Eric Baudelaire, Tarek Atoui, and many others. Before coming to BAMPFA, she was assistant curator of painting and sculpture at SFMOMA, where she organized solo exhibitions with Trisha Donnelly, Vincent Fecteau, R.H. Quaytman, and Paul Sietsema, as well as the major group exhibitions Six Lines of Flight: Shifting Geographies in Contemporary Art and The Air We Breathe: Artists and Poets Reflect on Marriage Equality. Prior to SFMOMA, DiQuinzio worked at the Whitney Museum of American Art, where she co-organized the 2004 Whitney Biennial, among numerous other exhibitions. She has contributed to journals such as Artforum, Mousse, Cura, and The Exhibitionist, in addition to writing for many exhibition catalogs.
Tina Kukielski is executive director of Art21, a nonprofit art organization specializing in digital media about contemporary art, and a curator and writer based in New York City. She has previously held curatorial positions at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Carnegie Museum of Art, and has independently curated art projects around the world. She was a co-curator of the acclaimed 2013 Carnegie International and was recently included in a list of “25 Women Curators Shaking Things Up” by artnet.com. She recently curated the first museum exhibition of artist Susan Te Kahurangi King for the ICA Miami.
