EDITOR’S FAREWELLS JUNE 18, 2018

is nestled in the space between “low enough income to get a bunch of financial aid money” and “enough money to pay for it without having to dive headfirst into debt,” unfortunately falling in neither category. I withdrew from the university and applied to De Anza after getting the letter. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, but it took time for that conclusion to become apparent. My first year and a half of being at De Anza consisted of me going back and forth between home and class 4 days a week, with the occasional awkward interaction with one of my high school classmates. Joining La Voz changed all of that.
Look, I can start rambling on about my dayto-day experiences at De Anza, but I really doubt any of you care. What I can do is provide some words of wisdom for my fellow De Anza students. To the ones who are staying for another year: do more than just classes, I know you’ve heard the “get involved on campus” plea a thousand and one times, but take it from me. You don’t have to go as far as joining DASB, though. Building relationships and making friends on campus makes your time on campus exponentially better. Start a conversation with the guy sitting next to you in Public Speaking.
The girl sitting across from you in PoliSci too. To the ones like me who are finishing up their time at De Anza: Look back at your time at De Anza, think about how you were when you first got here. Think about how much growth you’ve made, from a few years ago to now. All the learning experiences you’ve had. I’m not coming to you guys as this all-knowing wise man. I’m just 21, I’ve made mistakes and I will continue to make mistakes in life, but that’s how you learn. My final piece of advice to you is this: You don’t have to rush through it. If you enjoy the ride, it’ll feel just as fast.

“You’re going to De Anza, Jarra.” I dreaded hearing those words coming out of my mother’s mouth. A lot of newly-graduated high school students, including myself at the time, have this idyllic picture in their head of themselves going off to their dream school, moving into their dorm room and living happily ever after (for the next 4 years). I tried ignoring my mom’s advice until the financial aid letter came to my door, it came up shorter than Dwight Howard at the free throw line. My family

If you approached me in fall of 2015, foretelling I would miss De Anza, it would be shrugged off with laughter. The start of my three-year journey at De Anza was met with prideful resentment; a cocktail of conforming to ‘settle’ for community college when most of my high school acquaintances moved away, and realizing I was a byproduct of my toxic, cultish environment that was a Jehovah’s Witness household. The past three years have been spent restructuring my entire worldview and critically analyzing my environment.

I recognize progress, accepting the lifetime of learning that awaits. My career at La Voz manifests into a platform rendered unorthodox. With some broadcasting experience from high school influencing my journalism major, I saw that the school paper had a freelance video class in fall 2016. De Anza accreditation reaffirmed State law to eliminate English, mathematics prerequistites Andrew Shinjo STAFF REPORTER
De Anza College’s accreditation was fully reaffirmed for the next seven years, according to an email from President Brian Murphy to faculty. De Anza received a shortened 18 month accreditation on January because
the accreditation team listed three compliance requirements and suggested two recommendations, according to the De Anza website. The issues the accreditation specifically had at the time “were aligning program and course Student Learning Outcomes and fixing inconsistencies between official course outlines and professor’s syllabi,” according to a La Voz article.

DASB senator denounces sexually explicit messages, profanity in Facebook group chat

Andrew Shinjo STAFF REPORTER
A DASB senator on Wednesday, June 6 denounced the senate president and three other senators for sending sexually explicit material and profanity through a DASB senate business group chat. The senate also unanimously approved a resolution of no confidence in the current chancellor of California Community Colleges, Eloy Ortiz Oakley, presented by the Academic Senate. Brandi Madison, 47, environmental science major, implicated President Khaled Haq, 18, business major and three other senators in alleged misuse of the group chat that is supposed to be “used for business,” according to Madison. “It is not used to talk about sexually explicit things.” Chat content included talks about penis size, a photo of half naked man and the use of profanities, according to screenshots of the group chat. In an email to the senate, DASB senate adviser Hyon Chu Yi-Baker wrote that while she understood the social nature of the Facebook group chat, “as long as it is treated as an extension of DASB... this is considered a violation of our code of conduct, bylaws, campus policies and even state and federal laws.” Haq said there is currently no online senate code of conduct in place and the senate group chat was seen as a more casual rather than a professional interface. The senate vacated the group chat, and will move to an email based interface, Haq said. Former Foothill-De Anza Student Trustee Elias Kamal, 20, political science major, urged the senate to initiate a no confidence vote against Haq. “It’s honestly very disappointing to see the lack of professionalism, the lack
of social consciousness in equity and the immaturity.” The position of the DASB senate right now is more important than it has been in the past few years, Kamal said. “Keep each other accountable,” he said. “I highly encourage you guys to have a vote of no confidence for your DASB president.” In an interview with La Voz, Haq said he has followed all the requirements the president was sworn in to fulfill. In response to the criticisms of his presidency, Haq said he thinks it’s all just drama. “A no confidence vote,” he said. “I think that’s quite silly.” The senate also unanimously approved a Resolution of No Confidence towards Chancellor Eloy Oakley from the Academic senate. “Our current chancellor has not been in real consultation with faculty about issues of concern to us,” said political science professor and Vice-president of the Academic senate Jim Nguyen who presented the resolution to the senate. Some concerns Nguyen said faculties have is the proposal to spend $120 million to create a fully online community college and a budget proposal to move community colleges towards performance-based funding formula. “We’ve expressed these concerns with the chancellor,” he said. “The chancellor basically doesn’t listen to us.” The senate approved the resolution 21-0 unanimously. On other business an ad hoc committee to create more funds through fundraising and working with the Flea Market coordinator was approved. Senator Krish Bhalani, computer science major, resigned from the senate due to being under enrolled in units. Bhalani is the second senator to resign this term.

Major changes are coming to De Anza College’s curriculum thanks to Assembly Bill No. 705, proposed by Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin, and subsequently approved by Gov. Jerry Brown last Fall. The bill aims to maximize the probability of students entering and completing transfer-level coursework in English and mathematics within one year. This is accomplished by shifting priority from traditional placement tests to applicants’ high school GPA evaluation. “The math department is discussing various changes in placement, curriculum and support, that will shorten the time to transfer readiness while improving overall success rates,” said Jerry Rosenberg, Dean of mathematics department. Thomas Ray, Dean of English department, said teams of faculty from impacted departments and student support areas are meeting regularly to work out details of the curricular and technical changes in order to meet the state requirements. A college-wide team comprising of student service staff including counseling, outreach and assessment have been meeting
monthly to coordinate all the activities. Various ideas included shortening the pre-college course sequence to one or two courses, changing placement policies to allow a greater number of students to enter higher level math courses, providing concurrent support courses and additional support services, such as tutoring and counseling. Logan Rowin, 20, mechanical engineering major, said his placement tests were a poor representation of his actual knowledge, partially because of the stress. He was forced to retake high-school material. “It was just a bad day for a test,” Rowin said. “I think any other way would be better than what we have now.” The timeline that the state provided, requires colleges to fully implement a new curriculum in English, reading and math by fall of 2019 in order to be in compliance. Full guidelines are yet to be provided by the state. “I am very proud of how quickly our faculty have responded to the challenge of making major curriculum and program changes on such a short time frame,” Ray said. “The faculty and counselors have kept the success of our students at the center of all of our planning and discussions.”

Vote of no confidence: De Anza College’s Academic Senate endorsed a vote of no confidence in California Community College Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley on June 4. The resolution would join those of approximately fifteen other community colleges in expressing lack of support for Oakley’s actions. Reasons for lack of confidence within the text of the resolution include Oakley’s failure to consult with faculty and students when making legislative decisions with widespread impact on system operations, “such as performance-based funding and the fully online community college.” In an early June email to the CCC Board of Governors, the chancellor addressed outstanding resolutions of no confidence from community colleges. “These actions, while concerning, are not a threat to the Chancellor’s office leadership or the Vision for Success,” Oakley called these resolutions “not a threat to the Chancellor’s office leadership” and wrote, “you have my commitment to genuinely engage with our faculty leadership to understand how to best address the concerns raised.” De Anza’s classified staff did not endorse the resolution, nor did Foothill College’s Academic Senate, student body or faculty. Though the DASB endorsed the resolution on June 6, Academic Senate recalled the resolution on June 11 because of budget deliberations, workto-contract and lack of

COLA update: New budget information released June 8 between the governor and state legislative leaders have helped to provide a more clear picture on what the 2018-’19 budget will look like. This new information also clarified whether the district can give faculty the Cost of Living Adjustment, money allocated for multiple uses by the district, which is dependent on the finalized budget draft the state still needs to sign off on. The final draft can be signed anywhere between June 15 to June 30, but thanks to the recent information released, the Board of Trustees will hold a closed session on June 18 to discuss these new implications. This information about the state of COLA and the state budget will be discussed with the Faculty Association union in a separate Board meeting on June 20.

More cuts to Student Services budget mean less counsellor positions Kevin Coleto STAFF REPORTER
The Student Services Planning and Budget team proposed a $1.043 million reduction for the ‘18-19 academic year, in accordance with the target reduction of $1.2 million to Student Services suggested by the Foothill-De Anza College District. Additional budget cuts were also requested to the counseling office, projected at about $516,000. This would result in reducing the faculty to eight positions and
elimination of evening services, among other possible consequences. This new budget recommendation for Student Services at De Anza, follows a series of revisions the SSPBT has continually been making over the recent months this quarter due to additional budget reduction requests by the district in response to the ongoing enrollment crisis. “The next phase in the planning process is to position ourselves, along with other shared governance bodies, to think of a strategy to mitigate the impact of these
budget cuts.” said Rob Mieso, interim vice president of Student Services. In communication with other shared governance bodies such as the DASB and Academic Senate, the SSPBT voiced their concerns saying additional reductions will result in negative consequences for students as early as next year. Along with the budget recommendation, the team collectively chose to include the following statement: “SSPBT is gravely concerned about the negative impact of the proposed

budget reductions on our ability to serve students and the adverse effect these cuts will have on enrollment, student retention, completion, delivery of mandated services and overall service delivery to our students. We recognize the important role Student Services plays in supporting student success and our collaborative efforts with instruction. The proposed budget reductions will significantly limit our ability to fulfill our mission as a body, and the college’s overall mission.”

The Foothill De-Anza Board of Trustees met for the last time in the quarter on June 11 where students and faculty voiced concerns about transparency issues surrounding budget cuts, early class cancellation and Cost of Living Adjustment. The meeting began with Bruce Swenson, president of the board, issuing a statement saying, “The District has communicated clearly it is willing to continue negotiations on salary increases and remains open to doing so.” According to the board, the most is being done to combat the enrollment crisis community colleges are facing in California,
which is the main cause for the current budget deficit that is holding back COLA from being distributed to faculty. Nicky Yuen, a political science professor at De Anza, emphasized the idea that even though the district is facing this budget crisis, the district should take into consideration that the COLA is from the previous fiscal year and should be invested towards faculty. “We [faculty] are your assets,” said Yuen. The forum was also open to students of both De Anza and Foothill College’s to voice concerns about issues such as early class cancellations to the Board of Trustees. One of these students was Evan Martinez a student at De Anza. Martinez spoke about his personal struggles and how they affected his ability to organize his class schedule. “When you cut a class, you get stuck with the classes you had,” said Martinez. Ravieet Singh, De Anza economic professor, and Wendy White, De Anza humanities professor, provided suggestions to maximize enrollment in order to provide solutions that are not counterproductive such as cancelling classes early due to not having enough students in the class before the beginning of the quarter. “It’s not what has been done, but what can be done,” said Singh. “We all need to think outside the box. College to open the Bay Area’s first student crime lab
Nazar Timofeev STAFF REPORTER
The first crime lab in the Bay Area available to college students is opening at De Anza College next academic year. De Anza’s Administration of Justice Program applied for grants to fund the purchase of new equipment to students interested in forensic science and criminal justice. The focus of the lab is criminology, the science of analyzing evidence found at a crime scene. “The equipment and materials that the
department has invested in will greatly enhance students learning experience by providing students an opportunity to process crime scenes and evidence using current techniques that real life CSIs rely on”, Jeremiah Garrido, a De Anza criminology professor said. Students will be able to develop fingerprints using superglue fuming, cast footwear impressions, examine trace evidence with microscopes, reconstruct bloodstain patterns and bullet trajectories and write crime scene reports. “I’m extremely grateful to the
administration of justice department for investing in state of the art equipment for students that are interested in CSI and forensics,” Garrido said. “Physical evidence in criminal investigations has resulted in many cases solved and many innocent individuals exonerated”, Garrido added. Garrido is an expert and currently employed at the county’s crime lab. He helped solve the infamous case of Sierra LaMar, a 15 year old girl who was kidnapped and murdered in Santa Clara county.
Lamar’s body was never found, but prosecutors won a conviction and life sentence for her killer based in part on DNA evidence. “A lot of people are not aware of how criminal justice system works”, says James Suits, Chair of the department, “because of that, and the bad rep media gives to law enforcement, people have a negative picture.” The listed courses are: ADMJ 61 and ADMJ 84, both of which are GEapplicable.

De Anza College alumni and San Jose native Samuel Rodriguez anticipates finishing a celebratory mural at the end of June to commemorate De Anza’s 50th anniversary. Rodriguez is a renowned San Jose muralist. He paints lively portraits depicting symbolic messages within his art as a creative medium. Rodriguez began working on the mural at the beginning of June. “He brings together visual cues around identity with an openness that invites viewers to find meaning from their own points of view,” said Diana Argabrite, program coordinator at De Anza’s Euphrat Museum of Art. Rodriguez’s craft also allows him to work on other creative enterprises aside from murals, such as editorials and product design. His work has been published and showcased in museum galleries. “I am dedicated to becoming better at my craft, offering reliable input and execution
toward every job no matter the size,” wrote Rodriguez on his professional website that includes an impressive client list like Puma, Under Armour, Google, Samsung, Levi’s and Cukui. Self-taught, Rodriguez’s artistic journey began when he channeled his artistic abilities through graffiti. He has been an active professional for at least 15 years and is currently working as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. Rodriguez will be assisted by 10 students, including alumni of De Anza and interns from the Humanities Mellon Scholars program according to the De Anza website. “I am very excited,” said Huy Tran , a De Anza alumni who is working with Rodriguez on the mural. “I just feel privileged to get to work with such a wellregarded artist.” De Anza’s 50th Anniversary page will be posting visual updates on the progress of the mural until it’s completion at end of this month. The mural will complement one side of the S-5 building located near the math and science wing and will take approximately three weeks to complete.

Kanye West shocks music industry with two albums in a month ‘Ye’ brings throwback feelings, an old Kanye Nick Bauersfeld STAFF REPORTER
Kanye West took a small step back into sounding like the old Kanye that everyone fell in love with back in ‘04’05. On June 1, he released a new album, “Ye,” a hip-hop/rap album. The beats had a bit of that throwback feel to it and though some of the songs on this current album are a bit outlandish, other songs are great to listen and vibe to. One thing Kanye did a great job in was opening up about himself and everything he has been through the last couple years. Even the outlandish songs have a deep, emotional meaning. It’s just that some of those songs have a bizarre sound that could come off as uncomfortable for others to listen to. But from a lyrical standpoint, Kanye did a fantastic job expressing himself. His most meaningful song is “Violent
Crimes,” where he expresses what the future holds for when his daughters grow into their teenage years, with all the dangers of being a young, teenage girl, and how hard it will be for him to father them through it. But at the end of the day, he just wants them to be safe and unharmed. Though it may not be the most heartful song in the album “Yikes,” to me is the best song. It is a song that you can workout, dance and just go about the day with. This song is just a easy song to get into whether or not you are into Kanye. It is nice to see Kanye swinging back towards his old music, but he could do better considering how talented he is. Despite Kanye’s underperformance, this album is something that everyone should have on a playlist. It is still great music. If you’ve never really been a fan or aren’t familiar with Kanye’s work, I advise you listen to this album more than once because you will enjoy it more with each replay.
‘Kids See Ghosts’ creative, nostalgic Jack Molmud STAFF REPORTER
Manic cries by Kanye West, combined with the signature Kid Cudi hums, brings “Kids See Ghosts” to a creative prominence and intrinsically nostalgic appreciation. West’s proven, ungodly musical skill combined with impenitent lyrics will cause double takes for years to come. Since West announced his third album stint for the month of June, the world of music has been in his grasps. With his second album out on the market, he has not disappointed. “Ye” is subjectively an entertaining album compared to the 2016 “Life of Pablo,” though it did seem reserved as only a seven-track package. “Kids See Ghosts” is a tell-all, a showcase of creative control. The chemistry between Kanye and Cudi doesn’t show off. They reflect on
the self, injustice and is excruciatingly symbolic. With each listen, the songs reveals more. Kid Cudi has an indistinguishable, nostalgic sound; on “Reborn,” we see this paced style of rapping combined with a naturally easy walking, bass heavy melody we are used to. There is always room for improvement. Some sporadically inserted effects and uncalled for adlibs leaves more to be desired. It’s Ye, what do you expect? While it isn’t the banger-style, club bop music we witnessed a decade ago, this is still Kanye West. We see a reflection of the old, juxtaposed to the softer tones of the new. Lyrics ranging from addressing mental illness to preserving the environment West grew up in. This variety contributes to the beautiful composition of the track list, and brings excitement for what’s to come later this month.
‘God’s Favorite Customer’: simple beats, beautiful flow John Bricker
OPINIONS EDITOR
Father John Misty’s latest album, “God’s Favorite Customer,” released on June 1, is a concise, simple assortment of expertly polished rock songs and heartfelt ballads. Singer-songwriter Josh Tillman’s fourth studio album under his eccentric stage name follows his 2017 release, “Pure Comedy,” which overflowed with witty satire, but came off as long-winded and pretentious. “God’s Favorite Customer” succeeds where “Pure Comedy” faltered, keeping each track fresh while still creating a consistent aesthetic. Tillman’s songwriting is constantly shifting throughout the album, using wildly
different production over similar structures to create unique songs that flow beautifully together. For example, one of the album’s leading singles, “Disappointing Diamonds Are the Rarest of Them All,” uses pulsing piano chords and a soaring saxophone to create a sweet, optimistic classic rock feel. The title track comes next, using similar piano chords played much more softly, melancholy organs, and haunting background vocals to create an entirely different, lonely vibe as Tillman cries out to the angels for company, asking them to speak to him. Tillman’s lyrics are as satirical as ever, but now come with a distinctly human and personal touch. On “Disappointing Diamonds,” Father John Misty’s pessimism cuts through the saccharine instrumentation as he compares
love to “an oil tanker tipped at sea” and “a carcass left out in the heat.” But on “Please Don’t Die,” Tillman crafts a heartbreaking, country-flavored ballad. He sings from the perspective of his wife, waking up to find Tillman contemplating suicide and later begging, “Please don’t die, wherever you are tonight.” Father John Misty also pushes his voice further than ever before. Sometimes his falsetto sounds strained, like on the chorus of “Disappointing Diamonds.” But on the refrain of “The Palace,” Tillman’s high pitched crooning over skeletal piano sets the haunting mood perfectly, reminiscent of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.
Although “God’s Favorite Customer” is not quite as conceptual or experimental as some of Father John Misty’s previous work, Tillman uses simpler songs to his advantage, creating a beautifully concise album and a perfect introduction to his music.

Editorial: District must be transparent, practical
De Anza College should emerge from its budget crisis with many programs and options for students, interim President Christina Espinoza-Peib said during a De Anza Instructional Planning and Budget Team meeting on May 22. So that “we don’t become a STEM college,” she said. Why not? Why dismiss such an idea when our district is making thoughtless cuts without a forward thinking strategy? So far, the Foothill-De Anza District’s administration has handled our budget crisis poorly, making crucial decisions without transparency or a clear pragmatic vision. The lack of communication with students and faculty is unacceptable. At the district’s Board of Trustees meeting on June
11, Kathy Perino, Foothill-De Anza Faculty Association chief negotiator, said district officials have repeatedly announced huge budget decisions, such as eliminating nine full time positions with no apparent input from faculty and staff. Although there are faculty and staff on the planning and budget teams that make cuts, Perino’s concerns about the district undervaluing faculty input should not be ignored. During the board meeting – packed with faculty attending to speak their piece on the district’s decisions – three faculty members gave up their time slots to allow Perino to finish her statement. The district has not been transparent to students either. As La Voz made documentaries on programs sent to a viability committee for budget cuts, we found that most of the students
we interviewed did not know that their own programs were in jeopardy. De Anza could solve this problem by contacting students in programs under review for cuts and encouraging them to attend important meetings and give input. The district is making important decisions without transparency and without a cohesive, practical vision. Despite the gravity of this process, the administration has not provided a strategy to explain their decisions. Planning and budget teams often make important decisions based purely on enrollment numbers, and not on how the loss of programs and faculty will affect the identity and functionality of our campuses. At the same Instructional Planning and Budget Team meeting on May 22, faculty and administrators were asked to text
their answers to the question, “What is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about ‘De Anza College’?” The answers then appeared on a screen in the meeting room. Those nebulous submissions, the most common answer being “community,” – duh – are the closest thing we have to a unified vision for this process. The administration has not made its motives clear, and judging by its actions, it is not focused on serving the best interests of students. Foothill-De Anza administration: Give students and faculty a real opportunity to influence budget decisions, and listen to their voices. Be practical, open, and keep our best interests at heart. His gentleness, love of learning will be missed Cecelia Deck LA VOZ FACULTY ADVISOR
A gentle soul and quirky character at De Anza College for many years died suddenly last month. His kindly spirit and decades of stories will be missed by anyone who knew him. Brian Rose, 57, was by definition a lifelong learner. At the time of his death, he was enrolled in three journalism classes at De Anza and an engineering class at Foothill. Earlier this quarter, three of his black-and-white photos hung at the Student Art Show at the Euphrat Museum, where he had exhibited many works over the years. Later this month, an essay and a photo of his are to be published in De Anza’s literary magazine, Red Wheelbarrow, where he has previously published several works. The issue will be dedicated to him, said English professor Ken Weisner. “Brian was the loveliest sort of perennial student – great lover
of learning, camaraderie and community,” Weisner said. Brian struggled with learning differences all his life, said his sister, Mary Anne Ball. “He was born at a time when schools did not offer much help.” And yet he had earned an associate’s degree in liberal arts and a certificate in professional photography from De Anza late in life. In the 1980s, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from San Jose State University. Brian succeeded “through sheer perseverance, no matter how long it took him,” Ball said. He had contributed stories and photos to La Voz over eight years, and was working toward an associate’s degree in journalism and a certificate in public relations from De Anza. Besides his studies, Brian had many passions – vintage cars, trains, movies, art, the environment – and a headful of knowledge about just about everything. “He loved to talk your ear off,” Weisner said.

Brian Rose, 57, died last month. Reza Kazempour, a De Anza alum and former bookstore manager who supervised Brian as a student employee, recalled that Brian often started his shift by sharing a bit of information or a trivia fact with his co-workers. “He was a very nice guy and a very gentle soul,” Kazempour said. Many quarters of La Voz editors and fellow journalism students would start out wary when they

first met Brian, but quickly found his charm. “Brian was very open-minded to learning,” said Megan Wong, 19, journalism major and La Voz’s Campus Beat editor. “He was appreciative of learning, even from younger students. It’s a special gift to have.” Brian is survived by his father, three sisters, four brothers, three nieces and a nephew.
“The rusted body of an old pedal car is treated with such respect and care it feels like an old friend, no longer functioning but never forgotten,” is how Euphrat Museum director Diana Argabrite describes “The Christmas Gift of 1966” (left) which was part of the recent Student Art Exhibit. The photo hints at a memory of photographer Brian Rose, a De Anza College student who died last month at 58.

SPORTS Concussions: What’s De Anza doing about it?
De Anza’s Transferring Athletes
Trémaurice Johnson
STAFF REPORTER
Intercollegiate concussions are no joking matter, especially considering approximately 10,500 college athletes suffer from concussions yearly, with a steady rise in cases according to a study conducted by the NCAA. A former De Anza swim & water polo player says suffering from concussions as an athlete takes time and effort to recover from. “My first concussion took me out for a whole two weeks...I still went to practices, but I had to sit out,” said Christina Egami, a 20-yearold biomedical engineering major. De Anza’s athletic department says they take concussion cases seriously. “We treat all concussions equally...The athletic trainers are really concerned about symptoms and brain structure damages,” athletic trainer Steven Williams said. Williams says there are few visible signs that a concussion has taken place, the athletic department relies on students to self-report. But when they do, the athletic trainers swiftly undergo evaluation and monitoring to prevent/subdue potential brain damage. “There are certain red flags we look out for when we test things,” Williams said. “We test things like cognitive awareness and if they can still remember things.”
According to Williams, there has only been one reported concussion SOCCER during De Anza’s spring quarter, which occurred in Track and Field. Men’s: “Our concussion rate is pretty Steve Ayala-SJSU low...With the data I have now, Alexis Estrella-Menlo College I’m unable to tell you how many Jesus Martinez-UCSB concussions we’ve had this Sahr Mattia-Sonoma State year, but we’ve done post-injury assessments for thirty individuals,” Arturo Mesa-CSU Stanislaus Williams said. “Sometimes we Jin Oh-CSU Fullerton do an assessment and there’s no Josh Varon-CSU Dominguez Hills concussion.” The Foothill-De Anza Board Women’s: of Trustees implemented a new board policy in the summer of Morgan Becker-University of Nevada, Reno 2017 called BP 5700, laying down Maddy Hahn-SJSU additional guidelines and requiring Nicole Henry-SJSU enforcement of sports concussion Giselle Jimenez-SJSU protocol. “It’s a district policy that says there has to be a concussion management protocol in place and BADMINTON gives some guidelines,” Williams said. The policy was recommended by Coleen Lee-Wheat, Simon Yu Hsuan-Liu-UCLA Pennington, Warren Voyce, Joyce Kwun-UC Berkeley Shannon Bracy, ATC Foothill/De Ming Ming Tan-UC Davis Anza and Williams. Madi Ng-UC Santa Cruz “We’re always looking at what’s Rose Zhou-UC Berkeley going on in the sport concussion realm to make sure our policies and procedures are up to date,” Williams said. Policy procedures are updated annually to ensure protocol and procedures coincide with policies Information provided by De Anza already being implemented.

want ball players.” Raich said that Riki can play any defensive position on the field. “Desa was our shortstop, but when he came back from an index finger injury, we put him in the outfield and he made plays,”

A shortstop on De Anza College’s baseball team has announced his splash commitment to a highly touted baseball program. Riki Desa, 20, shortstop, communications major, decided that he will commit to Long Beach State, to continue his illustrious baseball career. As Desa gets set for the next chapter in his life, he explained his process, and how it was straight forward. “Coaches would contact me, and try to sell me on their school, but I was already set on Long Beach State,” said Desa. Long Beach State has produced many MLB talents throughout their history, as players like former AL MVP Jason Giambi and former all-stars Troy Tulowizki and Evan Longoria have gone through Long Beach State to the pros. Coach Erick Raich has nothing but praise for Desa, “[Riki] fits what the coaches at Long Beach preach. They don’t care if you’re undersized, because they just

Raich said. “We actually once joked around about having him play every position through one game.” Raich has a connection with Desa that goes back to Desa’s 8th grade year, in travel ball leagues. And when he found out that Desa had no offers coming out of high school, he brought him to the baseball program at De Anza.
Raich always saw great potential in the smaller Desa, standing at 5 feet, 10 inches tall. “Riki has a toughness to him that is very underrated, to go with a very high baseball IQ … and can be a very tough out when batting at the plate,” Raich said. Although Desa says he improves his game by watching slow-motion videos of MLB players swings, his biggest influences come from within his family. ‘When I was younger, my grandfather would play catch with me, and he made the game fun for me,” Desa said. Since moving to San Jose, Desa’s inspiration has been his dad Dean, who would go to his high school and practice with him by having him field ground balls and do batting practice. Desa has professional running through his blood, with his grandfather having pitched for multiple teams in the Japanese Baseball League. As Desa enters Long Beach in the fall, he follows in the footsteps of multiple MLB stars in his journey to make it to the pros.

On June 8th at 1 PM, De Anza held its first International Student Soccer Tournament. The soccer field was filled with students from different background to play a game they all held close to heart. “The turnout was really great, and is the highest turnout of any event I’ve done here” said Program Coordinator Hayley Davidson. There was 12 teams with around 7 students each, total of 95 students who singed up. 90% of them international students The field was split into two sides and games were played consistently on both fields, around 20 minutes each. Until in tournament fashion there were just two teams remaining. While the games were just for fun, that did not diminish the intensity the players were playing with and the passion for the game was on full display. “It was kind of intense, we missed out third shot which was crucial, we won just by luck, but
we would have won an actual 90 minute game” said Marovane Yousfi, 21, Communications. The tournament drew out a good amount of spectators as well, some cheering on their friends and others finding shade under the canopy and just taking in the sport. “My friend is in the game, so I am rooting for them and I am also a big fan of soccer” said Jack Lin, 21, Marketing. The whole event was coordinated by Hayley Davidson as a part of ISP and the events they hold constantly for the international students. “The tournament was a students idea to have a sport event for international students, and they asked about a soccer tournament” said Davidson The tournament had volunteer referees and had free refreshments for the players in between matches and the school supplied pennies for the students to wear to distinguish who was on what team. “I want to thank Kulwant and the soccer coaches for letting us use the field and helping us set up all of it” said Davidson
