As we head into November, your thoughts may be on turkey and pumpkin pie, but our thoughts are focused on coughs, sore throats DQG UXQQ\ QRVHV :LWK FROG DQG Ă&#x20AC;X season heading our way, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to talk turkey about how you get them, how you can avoid them, and how to take care of yourself.

Over 200 different cold viruses exist, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no wonder itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s called the common cold. The good news is that once a particular virus infects you, your immune system creates antibodies to that virus which protects you from getting sick from that particular virus again. Vaccines create immunity in the same ZD\ ZKLFK PHDQV WKDW D Ă&#x20AC;X VKRW boosts your immune system-for WKDW SDUWLFXODU VWUDLQ RI Ă&#x20AC;X %RWK FROG DQG Ă&#x20AC;X YLUXVHV DUH transmitted through the same two routes, surface and air. When an infected person touches something like a doorknob or desk, he or she may leave infectious respiratory secretions on those surfaces. :KHQ D SHUVRQ VQHH]HV RU FRXJKV these infectious secretions become airborne. You can catch the virus if you touch an infected surface and then touch your eyes or nose, or if you inhale the airborne secretions.

Washing your hands is the most important thing to do to protect \RXUVHOI IURP JHWWLQJ D FROG RU Ă&#x20AC;X The Centers for Disease Control also recommends that you get a Ă&#x20AC;X VKRW DYRLG FORVH FRQWDFW ZLWK people who are sick, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and practice good health habits like getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, managing stress and being physically active.

If you are sick, protect others from your germs by washing your hands, covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing RU VQHH]LQJ DQG LI SRVVLEOH VWD\ing home.

Health Services offers several over-the-counter medications to help relieve symptoms. Unfortunately, there is no medication that will make your cold go away; decongestants, cough drops and pain relievers simply make you feel less rotten while the virus runs its course, about seven to 10 days.

A cold comes on gradually, often starting with a scratchy throat or runny nose, while the onset of the Ă&#x20AC;X LV UDSLG DQG XVXDOO\ VWDUWV H[treme exhaustion and body aches, including a headache.

Sometimes complications can occur. A cold can cause an ear or sinus LQIHFWLRQ ZKLOH WKH Ă&#x20AC;X FDQ EHFRPH bronchitis or pneumonia. If symptoms donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t improve after 10 days, you should probably seek medical attention.
