Each year, this day promises festival goers a day of farmer’s market style shopping, festivities and yes, traditional German beer and sausage. In crisis situations, knowledge is power

Think fast: thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an emergency situation on campus. A gunman, a ERPE WKUHDW D ÂżUH DQ\WKLQJ Âą ZKDW do you do? How do you react?

If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know the answer to these questions, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fret: youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not alone.

De Anza College needs to make sure that more of its students know what to do in case of an emergency.

In the past month, De Anza has received two separate threats of attack Âą RQH DLPHG DW WKH &DPSXV +LQVRQ Center, and one at the Student and Community Services Building.

Yet the administration has made little effort to inform the student body of these incidents, and if they hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been reported in the pages of La Voz, neither threat would have been brought to the publicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention.

While it cannot be said that the administration overtly attempted to pre-

De Anzaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s administration should be commended for its commitment these past few years to diligently rehearsing the collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crisis protocols, but as long as 90 percent of the people on campus are completely ignorant as to their proper role in the event of such a crisis, chaos and casualties will be the inevitable results.

For despite the fact that De Anza has set up a Web page detailing how students should behave in the case of an emergency, too few students have availed themselves of this knowledge.

And although the rationale behind this approach has some merit (to prevent copycat offenses, for instance), the ultimate decision represents a dangerous lapse in judgment. $IWHU D VWXGHQW JXQPDQ RSHQHG ÂżUH last spring on his classmates at Virginia Tech University, investigators concluded that numerous lives could have been saved had the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s administration alerted its student body to the situation earlier. In fact, this conclusion was repeatedly emphasized as the main lesson to be drawn from the ordeal.

But notifying students of campus security threats in a timely fashion will not only allow them to make better-informed decisions during an emergency, it will also better prepare them for emergencies in the future.

Nanny laws: practically perfect in every way KATIE Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;HARA another voice In recent years, a myriad of laws have been passed â&#x20AC;&#x153;threateningâ&#x20AC;? Americanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s freedom of choice, imposing on our fundamental right to make decisions for ourselves.

Now the government is telling us how to be parents. Just this month, governor Schwarzenegger signed a bill that will make it a crime to smoke in a car with a child passenger.

This is an outrage. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not hurting anyone when we talk on our cell phones while driving, give our kids a spanking every so often to enforce some discipline or blow smoke into babiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; faces.

Then again, maybe it is. According to the Declaration of Independence, all U.S. citizens have the right to pursue happiness.

That right ends, however, when it starts to infringe upon someone elseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s well-being.

Maybe these â&#x20AC;&#x153;nanny lawsâ&#x20AC;? are interfering with your right to be whatever kind of parent you want to be. Maybe

you already know how to raise your children and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need anyone looking over your shoulder.

But in 2004, an estimated 1,490 children died in the U.S. as a result of abuse or neglect.

And in 2005, according to a study conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services, there were an estimated 899,000 reported cases of child abuse.

So is it really true that every parent out there knows exactly how hard theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re supposed to spank their kids, or even how often they need to feed them? Maybe a nanny stepping in wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be such an awful idea.

In order to drive a car, operate certain machinery, run a business or any number of other mundane activities, you have to go through rigorous testLQJ DQG EHFRPH FHUWLÂżHG But to bring children into the world Âą WR EHFRPH UHVSRQVLEOH IRU FXOWLYDWLQJ D KXPDQ OLIH Âą \RX KDYH WR JHW pregnant, and have a baby. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s it.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no test to decide if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ready, and children donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get a say as to which family the stork drops them into.

If so many parents donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what LV RU LVQÂśW JRRG IRU WKHLU FKLOGUHQ Âą RU ZRUVH GRQÂśW FDUH Âą ZK\ VKRXOGQÂśW WKH government step in?

Might this infringe on the rights of parents? Perhaps. But what about the rights of children?

Parent smokers who want to light up can always pull their car over and smoke outside. The child passenger, however, often doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a say in this matter.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t children have a right to clean air and freedom from ear infections and respiratory problems?

The U.S. surgeon general, the California Environmental Protection Agency and the American Lung Association all say that childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exposure to secondhand smoke contributes to asthma, respiratory tract infections and sudden infant death syndrome.

Why would parents be so opposed to protecting their children from these ailments?

Many parents have the experience and wisdom to take good care of their children, and an occasional cigarette in the car with the windows rolled down isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to kill a kid. But parents are not entitled to disregard the rights of children just for the sake of convenience. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nanny lawsâ&#x20AC;? are not overstepping the boundaries of parents, just setting down some basic boundaries for childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s well-being.

What do you get? Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no way of knowing.

At the moment, the curricula and rigor of many courses offered at De $Q]D DUH VLJQLÂżFDQWO\ GHSHQGHQW upon the instructors who teach them.

Thus, two students who are enrolled in the same exact course, yet with different instructors, might experience entirely different testing standards, workloads and class dynamics.

One course might be easier than the other, giving one student a head start on building a successful transcript, transferring to a four-year university or landing a good job.

Is this fair?

Yes. In an era when knowledge is transmitted at the speed of light, it would be a mistake to drive De Anzaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s instructors into the swamp of a

â&#x20AC;&#x153;common curriculum.â&#x20AC;?

Under such a system, all instructors of a certain course would be forced to distribute the same materials to their students and use the same rubric to grade papers and homework assignments. the minds of his students. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Would it be a good thing if Harold Bloom (the foremost scholar of Shakespearean criticism) would show up on a computer screen and give everybody the same lecture on what the character Falstaff is about?â&#x20AC;? asks Bob Dickerson, instructor of literature at De Anza. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Is that what learning is?â&#x20AC;?

What if Harold Bloom is wrong about Falstaff? After all, oftentimes in literature no one point of view is correct.
