PIEDRA COLLECTION

Our PIEDRA lighting takes its inspiration from the stone masks of the ancient civilization of Teotihuacán. Carved in the Mexican city of Tecali — which means ‘stone house’ in Nahuatl — the fixtures draw on the clean lines, defined angles, and streamlined silhouettes that epitomize the pre-Colombian stone masks. Sculpted from carefully chosen marble or onyx, each piece reflects the unique character of the individual stone from which it is formed.

THE COLLECTION STORY

Celosías –wooden lattice work–have played a recurring role in Mexican history. From the country’s deep relationship with religion to its Modernist architecture, Mexico’s appreciation for function and beauty is invoked in these structured forms. The wood partitions shield against the intense Mexican sun while allowing gentle, filtered light to shine through.

In designing this collection of lighting, we recontextualized the concept of celosias while paying homage to the traditional craft. Mirroring the disciplined workmanship of the lattice work, the fixtures’ clean lines and floating geometric volumes cast a diffused glow.

Our Celosía Collection is designed in collaboration with master woodworker Isaac Casteñada in the Mexican state of Guanajuato and is crafted entirely by hand from locally and responsibly harvested mesquite hardwood.

ATZOMPA COLLECTION

CLAY PENDANT LIGHTS FROM OAXACA

THE COLLECTION STORY

Our Atzompa Collection is created in the Oaxacan town of Santa María Atzompa, where the pottery-making tradition has roots tracing back to ancient Zapotec culture.

Building on this tradition, we formed a partnership with master artisan Eligio Zarate, whose family has for generations worked to bring innovation to this centuries-old craft.

Using a red clay that comes from local mountains, the pieces in this collection are first given form within custom gesso molds. Emerging from the molds, the repeating openwork designs—which play on motifs that are carved in to the stone at Mitla, the neighboring archeological ruins—are meticulously cut out one by one. Each piece is then brushed with a white wash before being fired in a wood-burning pit.

MARTILLADO COLLECTION

Our Martillado wall sconces are an extension of our Árbol Collection from Bolivia. Crafted in La Chiquitania, the collection pays homage to tropical modernism while drawing from Bolivia’s long standing woodworking tradition, dating back to the teachings of the Jesuit missionaries who settled in the region in the 17th century.

Formed from sustainably harvested and certified local tropical hardwoods, the face of each sconce is meticulously chiseled to create a pattern of striking undulations. The wood blocks are backed with brushed brass for textural contrast—enhancing the way the light casts from both the base and peak of the fixture.

VENTILA PENDANT

Ventila — our nickname for the Tagalog word for ‘fan’ — is woven from Filipino rattan and takes inspiration from colonial era ceiling fans.

It’s an interplay of textures, a mix of rustic and refined which is meant to capture a relaxed grandeur. Strands of tropical palm are carefully intertwined, forming a pattern of organic contours that balances against the crisp, warm edges of our brushed brass fittings.

Expert craftsmen create each piece, with its unique twists and turns, by hand in the Philippines from local, fully-renewable materials.

SADDLE LAMPS

Board formed leather lights from Colombia.

The lamps in this collection are inspired by Colombia’s equestrian heritage, layered with a jewel-toned color palette that takes inspiration from the works of Colombian artist Fernando Botero.

Talabartero translates as ‘master saddler,’ and the collection draws upon the expert craftsmanship and fine detailing—the stitching, the braiding and the hand tooling—that characterize the best of vintage saddles from the area.

Each lamp is crafted from natural grain board-formed leather, guided by the same formation techniques as those used in fashioning saddles, with curves reminiscent of the figures in Botero’s paintings.

We’ve partnered with master craftsman Edgar Beltrán Jaramillo and the skilled team in his Bogotá-based workshop to bring this collection to life.

COLLECTION STORY

Our Werregue Collection lighting builds upon the basketry that has long been woven by the Wounaan, an indigenous group hailing from The Chocó, where the jungle meets the sea on Colombia’s Pacific coast.

Made from werregue fiber—harvested from a thorny palm exclusive to the region—the pieces carry a remarkable heft, and are characterized by a weave so tight that the vessels have traditionally been used to carry water from river to village.

Preparing the collected material involves its own distinct handiwork as the fibers are rubbed together rapidly between the weaver’s hands – the friction of which gives the palm strands a distinctive sheen. The weaving, which takes months to complete, is shaped into a spiral pattern; thick fibers are used as the “soul” around which thinner fibers are meticulously wrapped.

With each light, the streamlined brass hardware gives way to the organic nature of the woven shade. The bold, graphic patterning embraces the traditional narrative of these pieces, and portrays a mirror into the world of the weaver. Each is one-of-a-kind and embodies its own distinctive story.

GRANADA COLLECTION

Cut glass lighting from a generations-old workshop in Granada, Spain.

IN THE WORKSHOP

Situated in southern Spain’s Andalusia region, the city of Granada is known for grand examples of Moorish architecture, including the famed Alhambra. It’s a place where cultures have always collided, and Islamic architecture co-exists alongside Catholic cathedrals. Granada’s rich culture blends deep Muslim and Romani influences, with Moorish design touches evident at almost every turn.

And it’s here, within this city, that our Granada Lantern Collection was born. Made in a generations-old workshop founded in 1911, the business is a family affair, currently run by the grandchildren of the founder. Having grown up with views of the Alhambra, detailed geometric handwork is a native tongue.

With our Granada Collection, that language translates as a marriage of modern and traditional geometries. Visiting the workshop is like stepping into an alchemist’s laboratory: you see tables strewn with cut glass,

chisels, pliers, and brushes. Family members work side by side, masters of both glass and metalwork. It takes years of knowledge, learned in the hands, to make each of these hand-forged lanterns.

The process is painstaking, and involves upwards of 20 individual steps. Working from a hand-drawn template, each pane of glass is hand-traced and hand-cut. To create the frame that will enclose the panes, every bend in the metal is carefully cut and turned. The welder then fuses the frame, cutting off the slag as he or she works. In the final stages, a patina is meticulously hand-painted on to every fixture before a protective lacquer is applied.

Each its own world, a lantern contains multitudes of glass panes, a prism through which the spirit of a medieval Moorish past shines. At once simple and complex, the lanterns in our Granada Collection resonate across cultures.

The Árbol Collection is an embrace of tropical modernism; each lamp is composed of salvaged tropical hardwoods from the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz, where trees that are felled by natural causes —or for construction—are rescued by our team. A blend of nature and form, the lamps recite a story of their own material. Each is one of a kind and carries its own pedigree, with its specific type of hardwood called out.

THE MAKING OF THE COLLECTION

Bolivia is a country of wildly divergent landscapes and dozens of local tongues. The city of Santa Cruz, which sits in the lowlands of eastern Bolivia, is home to many species of exotic trees—and it is within this city that our Árbol Collection has its roots.

This project is a partnership with Kirah Design, a Bolivian social enterprise founded and run by a dear friend, Gabriela Flores. Reclaimed wood, primarily from certified forests, lays the foundation for Kirah’s production.

Bolivia’s long standing tradition of woodworking originated with the Chiquitanias, the Jesuit missionaries who settled in the region in the 17th century. The Jesuits established within their missions the cultivation of a range of high crafts as part of their way of evangelizing the native populations. This extraordinary circumstance gave rise to highly skilled woodworkers, musicians, and luthiers, among others. When the Jesuits were later expelled by the Spanish crown, the locals were left with their knowledge and their craft, but with no market and no means for continued refinement. Eventually, what was left of the legacy were artisans making small souvenirs and religious figurines reminiscent of that distant past.

Kirah was founded on the discovery of this dormant legacy—an ancestral knowledge of carving and woodturning that was in great need of refinement. Since starting Kirah in 2008, Gaby’s mission has been to consistently provide sustainable funds from the development of ever-improving products so that the legacy comes to life again. In the process, rise has been given to a new generation of Master Artisans.

Our Árbol Collection stems from a new project that is focused specifically on wood from trees that hail from the city of Santa Cruz, which have either fallen

from natural causes or been felled for construction purposes. The rescued and salvaged roots, trunks and branches are brought to Kirah’s Master Workshop in Santa Cruz, where they are carefully sorted, air-dried and stored. The process of giving shape to the raw material then starts by identifying the potential of each piece with a team of Master Artisans, playing off the natural shapes, patterns and characteristics of the wood.

At its core, the design sensibility of this collection is driven by a desire to preserve what is ancient and essential, in both the materials and the techniques. The designs are defined by the materials themselves—with a sensitivity for the local context combined with the form-making principals of modernism. Drawing on the spirit of tropical modernism, the design of our Árbol Collection lamps embraces its South American roots.

Each lamp in the collection is one of a kind, with its specific type of hardwood called out. We work with local experts to identify the species of each salvaged tree, with a range of woods having been revealed, including:

It’s incredibly gratifying to partner with Kirah on this project. Kirah’s mission underscores a vision for development that not only understands the need to protect Bolivia’s rich natural and cultural heritage, but actually supports the flourishing of that tradition. Strong contributors to their local economies and to national conservation initiatives, the artisans that work with Kirah are paving a path towards future development that is founded on respect for indigenous communities, honor for local traditions and a commitment to loyal stewardship of the country’s rich but endangered supply of natural resources.

BURNISHED CLAY LAMPS

IN THE WORKSHOP

This collection is shaped from clay sourced from the Sierra Madre mountains in Oaxaca. Local legend holds that the clay is blessed.

Before firing, each piece is meticulously burnished with a curved quartz stone, creating a smooth, reflective surface that gives the clay its subtle sheen. This traditional technique—bruñido—compacts the surface and draws out the natural depth of the material, without the use of glaze.

The deep, inky tone of Barro Negro is the result of a firing process in which smoke, heat, and a deprivation of oxygen create an intense carbonization effect. Barro Terra, by contrast, undergoes an open-air firing process that retains the clay’s natural earthy color and highlights its warmth.

Created in collaboration with maestro Amando Pedro, our longtime friend and collaborator, in his workshop in San Bartolo Coyotepec, we drew inspiration for the shape from ancient cántaros —the traditional vessels used to transport and store mezcal.
