District Governor’s Message Dear Team Mates,

As we complete the first quarter of our year of Service let us take time out and reflect upon the activities of our clubs. Have we met our targets that we started with? Have we served our communities which we desired to serve? And have we engaged our members as we planned at the start of our term? If our answers are in the affirmative, then we are heading towards the direction we had set. And if the answer is not satisfactory, we still have time to correct our course and reset our direction towards our mission of Rotary: making a difference.

I will request all of our leaders, both club and district, to have a quarterly review meeting and please share your club and committee activities with the district secretariat. Also let us plan for the second quarter i.e. Oct - Dec ‘17.

At the district level, this will be a very busy and exciting period of our year.

A mega event is being planned to give him a rousing welcome to Pakistan.

The details will be shared with you soon.

I am sure with our collective commitment and engagement, we will make 2017-18 a year of Rotary: Making a Difference.

Editorial Editorial Rotary plays a pivotal role in addressing the economic challenges of disadvantaged communities and it realizes that service to humanity is the real service to God. If Rotary has to remain on a firm footing, us Rotarians must realize that in order to come nearer to God, we will first have to come nearer to humans.

We must keep our eyes open to the sufferings of the needy and see how we can be instrumental in bringing a little sunshine to the dreary lives of the unfortunate. In turn, we will also be benefitting ourselves by experiencing the satisfaction that lies in service and in helping others.

As a Rotarian once said “You have not earned the label of a ‘Rotarian’, if you are blind to the plights that you can assuage.”

Why Vaccines?

The Disease - Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of five.

01 Polio mainly affects children under age 5.

Vaccines are one of the most successful health innovations in recent history, but the world is failing to reap the full benefits of immunization.

Most know it as poliovirus. The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine one which Rotary and our partners use to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide.

02 There is no cure, but polio is preventable with a vaccine.

03 Only three countries remain endemic.

04 We’ve reduced cases by 99.9% since 1988.

05 Until we end polio forever, every child is at risk.

Childhood vaccination saves up to 3 million lives every year, but 1.5 million people still die each year from diseases that could have been prevented by vaccines.

Risks, I like to say, always pay off. You learn what to do or what not to do.

Dr. Jonas Edward Salk was an American medical researcher who discovered and developed the first successful polio vaccine while he working on developing an influenza vaccine.

Polish-born American physician and virologist (scientist who studies viruses) In the 1950s Salk and Sabin developed separate vaccines - one from “killed virus” and the other from “live virus” - to combat the dreaded disease polio.

Polio Vaccine In 1947, Salk took a position at University of Pittsburgh, where he began conducting research on polio, also known as infantile paralysis.

Jonas Salk became a national hero when he allayed the fear of polio with his vaccine, approved in 1955. Although it was the first polio vaccine, not the last; Albert Sabin introduced an oral vaccine in the 1960s that replaced Salk’s.

In America in the 1950s, summertime was a time of fear and anxiety for many parents. This burden of fear was lifted forever when Dr. Jonas Salk had developed a vaccine against the disease.

By 1951, Salk had determined that there were three distinct types of polio viruses and was able to develop a "killed virus" vaccine for the disease.

Preliminary testing of the polio vaccine began in 1952 - the shot given mostly to children. National testing expanded over the next two years, making it one of the largest clinical trials in medical history. Roughly 1.8 million children were given the vaccine during the test phase. In 1953, Salk administered the experimental vaccine to himself, his wife and sons. Salk's efforts were supported and promoted by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis and the vaccine was approved for general use in 1955, Salk became a national hero.

In its first few years, the vaccine had a remarkable impact on the number of new cases of polio reported. There were more than 57,000 cases in the United States in 1952 and a decade later, that number fell to less than a thousand. The Salk vaccine was replaced with a “live virus” vaccine developed by Albert Sabin around this time because it was less expensive and easier to use.

Albert Sabin was a medical researcher in the United States who developed the oral vaccine for polio which has become the standard defence against the disease. Working on polio from the 1940s, Sabin observed that some people had immunity even though they had never shown signs of having the disease. Believing they had previously been infected by a weak strain of the virus, Sabin sought out such strains in order to produce a new vaccine.

Sabin’s Europeans trials were also deemed highly successful, and in 1957, his oral vaccine was tested in the United States. In 1963, it became the standard vaccine, and the one used in the effort to eradicate polio around the world.

Over the years, polio was found to be a highly contagious disease that spread, not in movie theaters or swimming pools, but from contact with water or food contaminated from the stool of an infected person, and yet polio panic was a source of anxiety among Americans surpassed only by fear of atomic attack.

Although Jonas Salk is credited with ending the scourge of polio because his killed virus vaccine was first to market, Albert Sabin’s sweet-tasting and inexpensive oral vaccine continues to prevent the spread of poliomyelitis in nearly every corner of the world.

Sabin refused to patent his vaccine, waiving every commercial exploitation by pharmaceutical industries, so that the low price would guarantee a more extensive spread of the treatment.

From the development of his vaccine Sabin didn't gain a single dollar, continuing to live on his salary as a professor.

The Polio Fighter

of a polio stamp and first day covers on 13th December 2000 by the Pakistan Post Office.

Ministry of Health supported my efforts and with the valuable assistance from PDG Mohammad Akbar, Pakistan Post Office contributed in the design, printing and sale of the stamp. The slogan ‘Polio Se Pak Pakistan’ was conceived by the National Polio Plus Committee which is now being used by the Government in official advertisements.

Why has polio eradication been so difficult despite all out financial support and personal involvement of international and local agencies?

Maybe in the beginning we did not fully realize the strength and tricky nature of wild polio virus. We set a target of raising $120 million (1985-87) for procurement of OPV to immunize the children of the world.

But when we ended up collecting $246 million - thanks to the enthusiasm and generosity of Rotarians worldwide - we upgraded our mission from immunizing children against poliomyelitis to complete eradication of wild polio virus from the surface of the earth by the year 2000. This was a much complex and difficult task.

Excerpts from an interview taken in 2006 by the Editor:

How did you get involved with polio?

My first encounter with polio was in 1975 when I served as the president of Rotary Club of Karachi. There were reports of outbreaks of polio in different parts of Pakistan and at the same time there was a shortage of polio vaccines. On my appeal Rotary Club of Toronto Eglington promptly offered 110,000 doses of OPV. The major donor was Dr McClure from RCTE.

In 1988 WHO estimated that 350,000 children in 125 countries were becoming victims of polio. Now in 2006 there are only a few hundred confirmed polio cases in the world. Only four countries in the world are still polio endemic for indigenous polio virus where transmission of the virus could not be interrupted.

Polio eradication efforts require total commitment of all stake holders. A task of this nature also requires active community participation and support specially in creating awareness and social mobilization.

How can the Rotary movement be strengthened?

We must concentrate on extension.

Form new clubs in cities and communities which can sustain a strong and properly functioning club.

Strengthen weak clubs.

Rotary information to old and new members in clubs who should be well informed about Rotary’s Mission, Object of Rotary, Four Way Test, Declaration to be made by Rotarians and Rotary Basics.

Honors Past District Governor Abdul Haiy Khan, Chairman Pakistan National PoluoPlus Committee, was honored with the Tamgha-eImtiaz by former President of Pakistan Muhammad Rafiq Tarar during the reign of General Pervez Musharraf.

Its a state organised honor of Pakistan and the fourth-highest decoration given to any civilian in Pakistan based on their achievements. The award recognizes arecipient’s public service efforts.

PDG Abdul Haiy Khan honored on August 14,2000, Pakistan Independence day, for his contribution toward Polio eradication through RI’s PolioPlus program.

This award not only earned laurels for Rotarians in Pakistan, but also made a significant impact on Rotary’s image in Pakistan.

How do we motivate Rotarians to involve themselves in polio eradication?

Thank you, Rotarians!

Sometimes in life all our ducks fall in line, and we are truly blessed - that is how I feel about my Polio Eradication service in Pakistan.

It was the year 2001 when I attended a “Polio Summit” in Mumbai with my dear friend and mentor PDG Purushotaman (past Indian National Polio Plus Chair) and I was introduced by Puru to PDG Abdul Haiy Khan, the National Polio Plus Chair in Pakistan.

Immediately, I felt the passion and conviction of Abdul Haiy to making life better for the children of the world through polio eradication. That meeting led to the sharing of updates on activities being conducted to support reaching children with polio vaccine.

While volunteering in Botswana with polio, I was invited to undertake 3 months volunteer service in Pakistan in late 2004, an opportunity I had no hesitation to accept. Arriving in Karachi was overwhelming, such a lively city with so much activity. My friend PDG Haiy was there to meet me and invited me home to meet his family and then to Rotary Karsaz which immediately gave me an extended family which extended beyond my polio colleagues at WHO. During my time in Karachi working with Dr Mohammad Azmoudeh, the WHO Sindh team leader, I was allocated Saddar, Gulberg and Malir towns to support polio eradication activities.

Working closely with each Town Health Officers we worked to address the issues that prevented children from receiving oral polio vaccine. This included close involvement in the training of vaccination teams, micro-planning, supervision of house to house activities and social mobilization activities. Every day brought different interactions and experiences. I recall some truly memorable events which included working closely with Rotary Karsaz and the boy scouts on social mobilization activities in Malir town. One event was where all the school children joined hands along the road carrying polio banners, and included a camel painted with polio messages and many vehicles in procession during a visit of Polio Plus Chair Bob Scott where Bob was able to vaccinate several children at the clinic and deliver messages of support for vaccination. It was a totally overwhelming experience. Another very different activity was arranged by PP Ovais (now DG Ovais) and the THO Saddar Town, joining with the Rotaractors who wore polio aprons and carried vaccines on hot barmy nights seeking children who were out in the evening with parents in the park or on the beach. The energy of the Rotaractors was just what was needed at the end of the day.

From Karachi I was able to support campaigns in Sukkur, Quetta and Gwadar.

children were vaccinated. During my time in Pakistan, we worked closely in the filming of “Polio True Stories” - 12 short stories of polio survivors, some of which were aired on national TV; also the provision (partly funded by an Australian Rotarian) of new vaccine carriers for Pakistan and Afghanistan and the initial establishment of a “site” for the vaccinators working on the border with Afghanistan. His advocacy led to the personal involvement of many high level dignitaries in campaigns and in addressing identified challenges.

Beyond polio, I was able to become part of an extended family of Karsaz Rotarians who frequently invited me to attend family events. While increasing my Urdu vocabulary, there were times I got stuck. One evening I found myself a bit lost at the airport due to the cancellation of a flight - along came Rtn Mian Shaukat who ensured I safely got to the hotel and back to the airport the next day! I was never so thankful to see a friendly face.

My final year in Pakistan was spent in Islamabad where I joined with the Rotary family there to support the partnership in polio activities. My home club then was Islamabad Cosmopolitan with Rotarians and their families again welcoming me like family.

I have many happy memories of the Rotarians I worked closely with in Pakistan, including PDG Tariq Allawala and Kishwar when they visited Australia representing the Rotary International President. Also, after leaving Pakistan I have kept in touch with many Rotarians and have attended many meetings that have included the National Polio Plus Chair Aziz Memon.

Truly, my years in Pakistan with polio eradication remain very special to me. I yearn to return and will, when I stop the full time commitment to polio (am currently in Nigeria). I look forward to personally thanking everyone again and joining with you to celebrate a “Polio Free Pakistan.”

Congratulations to DG Ovais and Aaliya for the leadership role they have taken over many years, but especially leading the district during this Rotary year. I know in this Rotary year, Pakistan will interrupt wild poliovirus circulation and be on the road to being delisted from the endemic countries.

Rotary Club Karachi Karsaz Rotary Community Corps of RCK Karsaz organized a polio awareness walk at Malir. It was largely participated by students of adopted schools, scouts and people from the locality.

Rotary Club Karachi Pearl RCK Pearl organized a polio camp at Bazm-e-Alquraish, Nasir Colony, Korangi. The camp was inaugurated by DG Ovais Kohari along with Aziz Memon, Chair National Polio Plus Committee, Salman Ahmed, Polio Brand Ambassador and renowned singer, Club President Waqar A Shaikh, Secretary S Kashif Rafi, RCK Pearl members, Rotarians and Rotaractors from RCK Pearl - BUMDC.

Rotary Club Karachi Midcity Rotary Club Karachi Kolachi Rotary Club Karachi Kolachi initiated a Polio Vaccination Drive at Beaconhouse School System KG II, Clifton and vaccinated kids of Pre-Nursery & Nursery. District Governor Ovais A. Kohari, Assistant Governor Abbas Lavingia and Club members vaccinated children and also distributed polio mobilization materials among the kids.

The club along with its Rotaract Club of Dow University of Health Sciences, hosted a Polio awareness campaign in the pediatric ward and OPD of the Dow University Hospital. Medical students were engaged throughout the campaign with Club President Agha Sohail Asif, Secretary Shaukat Khokar and President Rotaract Club Dr. Fathima Pervaiz. Polio kits were distributed among the children in ward and OPD.

Rotary Club Mirpurkhas RC Mirpurkhas organised Polio awareness drive with Polio routine immunization at two primary schools in Pak & Wadat Colonies.

Polio Social Mobilisation items were distributed among school children and staff. The event was coordinated by Secretary Prem Kumar with support from RPLM and National Chair Polio Plus Committee PDG Aziz Memon.

RPLM Adopted Schools K Electric in coordination with RPLM conducted a Safety Awareness Drive in its adopted schools at GBSS Kotwal Building, GBSS Bazarta Line and GBSS Hawkesbay. The program included electrical and fire safety talk, first aid tips and a fire fighting demo.

Rotaract Club Mirpurkhas Rtr PP Sarosh Nabi Khan Secretary RAC Mirpurkhas & Co Chair District Polio Committee Rotaract visited madressahs for polio campaign and distributed polio social mobilization items among the students. The media partner was Metro TV.

As part of a public enhancing drive for Rotary, PP Jawaid Babar arranged a live morning show on PTV on polio and literacy in Pakistan. DRR Elect Rana Asad & Rtr Syed Asjad Ahmed spoke on the show.

His Excellency Consul General of Japan in Karachi at a diplomatic event with PP Jawaid Babar. The Consul General commended the work of Rotary and the DG.

Diving into Rotary...

Have you ever seen a pearl diver at work? Just looking down on the surface of the water, it’s impossible to imagine the beauty and potential waiting below. But the divers seem to have a “second sight”.

All day long they plunge under the waves, hunting treasures invisible from above. And in theor cupped hands, every shell - and its hidden prize - rises to the surface like an offering. Rotary is a lot like pearl beds. It offers us a wealth of potential, but requires us to look beneath the surface to find its true promise and worth.

One of the greatest “Pearls of Wisdom” is the 4-Way Test.

More than just a compass to guide our professional conduct, it is a code of ethics for every area of our lives.

Let’s take a conscientious look at ourselves using these four familiar questions.

Is it the truth?

U Am I truly a Rotarian at heart?

U Do I defend and proclaim the truth about Rotary?

U Do I want to serve through Rotary, or be served by it?

Is it fair to all concerned?

U Have I been fair to my fellow Rotarians with whom I share a common ideal?

U Do I try to do my part to keep from over-burdening my associates unfairly?

U Before criticizing, do I try to understand the reasons, so my judgement can be a fair one?
