Rotary Vocational Services
Rotary’s Original Idea of vocational service is rooted in the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations
| Governor’s Monthly Letter | January 2018
District Governor’s Message Dear Fellow Rotarians,
Happy New Year Greetings from District Governor Ovais Ahmed Kohari
Welcome to January 2018. Another year and the month set aside by Rotary to celebrate Vocational Service. Vocational Service is one of Rotary’s Avenues of Service which calls every Rotarian to aspire to the practice of high ethical standards in their chosen occupation or profession. It recognizes the worthiness of all useful occupations and use their vocational talents to resolve issues and challenges that may arise from the needs of their clubs and society. It is said that when professionals join a Rotary Club, they do so as representatives of their classifications. Rotarians therefore have the responsibility of representing their vocation in the Clubs and representing Rotary in their workplaces. I personally believe that Vocational Service if properly undertaken can truly impact a community and help build a better society. This year, we have made Vocational Training as one of our major emphasis programs. The Skilling Pakistan Project, initiated by our District Vocational Chair PP Sohail P Ahmed is a well thought program, where Rotarians and Clubs can partner to provide and develop well trained employable human resource, which will not only be a great support and bread earner for their families but will also add value to our human capital. I would therefore urge all Rotary Clubs to join hands and work for Skilling Pakistan, thereby contributing towards the economic wellbeing of Pakistan.
On behalf of District 3271, GML Team and First Lady Aaliya Kohari send warm greetings to every corner of the Rotary world. We wish you peace, health, and joy in 2018.
Regards,
As the calendar year draws to a close, it’s a great time to reflect on your club’s 2017 accomplishments and challenges. Rotarians find in Rotary a medium for the expression of compassion for others, for building a better world, and a delightful way of fulfilling their own selves. ~ PRIP M.A.T. Caparas
Editorial January is the Vocational Service month in the Rotary calendar. According to Rotary International, Vocational Service is the opportunity each Rotarian has to represent the dignity and value of his vocation to other members, as well as the club’s responsibility to undertake projects related to such areas as career planning, vocational training, and the promotion of high ethical standards in the workplace. When we Rotarians serve the people through our vocation we are doing service to others in a special way that nobody else can do. An honest job is a unique way to serve. If you practice your profession well, honestly and with your best ability, you’d be a gem of a Rotarian. Rotary’s Vocational Award Program is, therefore, suited to honour men and remember them for work beyond the call of duty. If Rotarians take even a small step in the right direction, it will generate fresh fragrance and people will recognize the efforts of Rotarians to be fair, ethical and truthful. Let us try to be a little bit better than what we were yesterday and in time to come, we will be nearer to ideal society.
You are welcome to make contributions to the GML. However,
The Objective of Vocational Service The introductory statement and three of the four objectives of Rotary relate to Vocational Service, underlining its importance to the philosophy and culture of Rotary. Those objectives are: - To encourage and foster high ethical standards in business and professions, to recognise the worthiness of all useful occupations, to dignify the Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society. - To apply the ideal of service in personal, business and community life. - To advance international understanding and goodwill, and peace through a world fe l l ow s h i p o f b u s i n e s s m e n a n d professional men and women united in the ideal of service. Paul Harris wrote: Each Rotarian is a connecting link between the idealism of Rotary and their trade or profession.
The Definition of Vocational Service Vocational Service is the way Rotary fosters and supports the application of the Ideal of Service to the pursuit of all vocations.

Vocational Ser vice is the shared responsibility of both the Rotary Club and its members. The role of the Club is to implement and encourage the objectives by its own actions in dealing with the community and by the development of projects that enable members to use their vocational talents in the service of the community. The role of members is to conduct themselves and their businesses in accord ance with Rotary principles, and support the Vocational Service projects that the club has developed.

Rotary’s Public Image by PDG. M. Iqbal Qureshi Assistant Rotary Public Image Coordinator - RI, Zone 6B
There are three important pillars of Rotary, Membership, Rotary Foundation and Public Image. One of the key priorities of Rotary International’s Strategic Plan is to enhance Public Image which is a reflection of the perception of an entity i.e. Rotary. Public image is made up of three elements: what does an organization believe in - its Core Value - what do their members do in the community, how do they treat people who interact with them, their Behaviour, and lastly, the Visual Image they project to the public. And therefore, an organization’s credibility is as important as its visibility. It is a fact that low level of awareness and lack of understanding of Rotary’s good work in our communities hinders our membership growth and hampers humanitarian initiatives. With enormous resources like universalism of Rotary, galaxy of international diversified leadership, series of exemplary service projects worldwide, force of 1.2 Rotarians, we can do a lot to enhance the Rotary’s Public Image in its true perspective. You will appreciate that for the first time in the history of Rotary Pakistan, Rotary Pakistan Media Centre (RPMC) was launched by RI President Ian Risely during his visit to Pakistan in December 2017. RPMC is a Public Image Building Program having a vision to elevate the importance and relevance of Rotary's motto ”Service above Self” and help improving the quality of life of fellow human beings through it’s various humanitarian programs. Besides, its mission is to enhance the image of Rotary by promoting the activities of grass root level Rotarians highlighting their efforts through numerous public image programs in Pakistan.
50 Years of exemplary service with the
Rotary Club of Karachi office as its Manager A lifetime of dedication, commitment and Service Above Self Ehsan Raza was brought in Rotary office as its manager by Rtn Dost Muhammad Dehradunwala 50 years ago. It’s been a long Rotary journey for Ehsan. He has seen the difference in the core values, commitment, sincerity, integrity between then and now but says he has received love throughout his 50 years in Rotary. PDG Mohammad Akbar was his mentor and guide as Ehsan would receive a two hour daily session of training and guidance from PDG Akbar. Ehsan is grateful to PDG Aziz Memon who keeps him updated with all the work that needs to be done and he is also introduced to all Rotarians and proudly feels a part of Rotary. Ehsan is blessed with four sons and a daughter and would be really happy to see his son work with him in Rotary. Rotary salutes Ehsan Raza for his unparalleled support to the organization!
We will soon launch website of RPMC and link it with all-important Rotary International and other social media websites. All affairs of RPMC will be governed by a Board of Trustees. As per objectives, the RPMC will ensure: - To build up a good image of Rotary and create awareness in the community as to what the Rotary is doing in Pakistan. - To highlight all the activities of the Rotary Clubs in Pakistan via the data center to inform & motivate club members. - To facilitate in achieving RI’s main overall goals in Pakistan of eradicating polio & increasing literacy. - To increase Rotary Club membership. Each and every Rotarian is a Brand Ambassador of Rotary. Rotary’s Public Relations or Public Image is the responsibility of each and every Rotarian. If we want to make Rotary a household name in Pakistan then we have to enhance Rotary’s Public Image.

Visit to Jahangir Park by Rotary Club Karachi Karsaz RCK Karsaz visited the recently renovated Jahangir Park in Saddar. The historical park was constructed in 1883 by a businessman Khan Bahadur Behramji for the recreational activities of the public. It was later handed over to the municipality. Due to the negligence of the municipality in the recent past the place became a hub for the criminals and drug addicts and the land mafia took control of the park. In 2016 the Sind Chief Minister took interest in clearing the park from the criminal mafia and in getting it renovated for public use. It was a challenge as the drug mafia threatened the builders with dire consequences but the architect Faiz Kidwai took up the challenge and started the renovation work and in record six months the park was ready and inaugurated by Bilawal Bhutto in July 2017. It is built on 5 acres at a cost of 20 crore. The park has a rich variety of plants, bird aviary, dinosaurs, a canteen, a walking track, 1000 seat ampitheatre for cultural and art activities and a library with over 5000 books on diverse subjects. This beautiful family park is worth visiting and it has something of interest for all age groups.
