As we close our first half of the year, let us ponder upon our role as a leader of our club. Have we truly contributed to the attainment of our goals? Have we motivated and inspired our colleagues in contributing their bit in the activities of our club? And have we truly made a difference in the lives of the people that we touched? Please remember, we are all leaders in our own way. Rotary provides each one of us the opportunity to lead and serve our communities through our clubs.

And it is our leadership which provides the impetus to our clubs and our organization to do more for the betterment of our members and our community.

This December, we had the privilege and honor to welcome our world leader Ian Risely, Rotary International President, to Pakistan. It was indeed a great moment for our District. Though his visit was brief but very eventful and historic. We dedicate our December issue of GML to President Ian’s leadership, which has given us a renewed inspiration and energy to do more for the good of our world.

Many great leaders have contributed to Rotary and through Rotary it is our responsibility to build on the work of those who have gone before us and build a solid foundation for the work yet to come. This is our time, our opportunity and our challenge to make the best of it and through our leadership leave a lasting mark on the lives that we touch.

Editorial December is the Disease Prevention and Treatment Month in Rotary calendar. This is one of the six focus areas of Rotary.

400 million people around the globe do not have access to basic healthcare and so Rotary is devoted to focusing on health education and awareness, and preventing and fighting diseases.

Facilities are set up in underserved communities struggling with outbreaks and healthcare access which allows doctors, patients and governments to work together.

Hundreds of health projects are underway around the world at any given time. The Rotary Foundation is changing the world by providing grants for projects with our contributions!

connect, partner, and serve through Rotary December is about more than the holidays This year seems to have flown by so fast! Time flies when you’re having fun with Rotaract and before you know it, the end of the year is upon us. December is not only a month of holiday celebrations around the world, but it is also Rotary Disease Prevention and Treatment month. While it might seem odd to put these two topics in the same sentence, they do have a commonality in that the end of year holidays bring about a mindset of hope and looking towards a better future, which can be applied to fuel our motivation in the fight against disease.

Disease prevention and treatment is one of the world’s most critical and widespread humanitarian concerns, and the Rotaract Club of Toronto is constantly working to play our part in addressing this need. We do this by supporting and fundraising for organisations that educate people on how to prevent diseases and help people get access to treatments. Some examples of events we have partaken in are: - The AIDS poker walk where we joined other clubs to raise funds for international and local initiatives that help fight HIV/AIDS through education, prevention, treatment, and providing support for orphans, surviving guardians and people living with AIDS. - Organising a blood donation drive at a time when the Canadian Blood Services had critically low volumes.

Education is also a big factor in conquering disease, as with knowledge comes prevention. Certain diseases such as polio have no treatment, but are preventable through vaccines and raising awareness. Through the efforts of Rotary and partner organisations, the world is now more than 99.9% polio-free. We’ve gone from 1,000 new cases each day to less than one per week! This World Polio Day, our club had the privilege of having Eddie Rice, a huge advocate for improving accessibility in Canada, and Erica Mugan who works for March of Dimes Canada, educate us on polio and its impact. We also implemented a social media campaign to raise awareness about polio.

As we work together towards providing everyone with the basic human right of health, learn how you can help and join the fight for a healthier world.

Reducing HIV infection: In Liberia, Rotary members are helping women get tested for HIV early in their pregnancies. They used prenatal care to reduce new HIV infections in children by 95 percent over two years.

Ending polio: Rotary members have played a key role in bringing the world to the brink of polio eradication. Their efforts have not only ended polio in 122 countries but also created a system for tackling myriad other health priorities, such as Ebola.

Victoria, Australia Ian H.S. Riseley is a chartered accountant and principal of Ian Riseley and Co., a firm he established in 1976.

Prior to starting his own firm, he worked in the audit and management consulting divisions of large accounting firms and corporations. His firm specializes in income tax and management advice for individuals and small businesses. He has a Masters Degree in Taxation Law and Graduate Diplomas in Accounting and Income Tax. Riseley has been a member of the boards of both a private and a public school, a member of the Community Advisory Group for the City of Sandringham, and involved in Sea Scouts and sporting groups, as well as honorary auditor or adviser for a number of charitable organizations.

Riseley’s honors include the AusAID Peacebuilder Award from the Australian government in recognition of his work in East Timor, the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the Australian community, the Distinguished Service Award and the Regional Service Award for a Polio-Free World from The Rotary Foundation.

A Rotarian since 1978, Riseley has served as treasurer, director, Foundation trustee, and member and chair of numerous RI and Foundation committees He and his wife, Juliet, a past district governor, are Major Donors and Bequest Society members of The Rotary Foundation. They live on seven hectares at Moorooduc, where they practice their personal philosophy of sustainable and organic living. They have two children and four grandchildren.

EVENING - DECEMBER 4,2017 The Rotary International President, Ian Riseley was received at the Karachi Airport by District 3271 Governor Ovais Ahmed Kohari, PDG Aziz Memon & his aide PDG Faiz Kidwai. He was escorted to the Hotel where he was staying where he was welcomed by the First Lady Aaliyah Kohari who presented him with a bouquet of flowers, District Secretary Ali Hafeez Azmat, Chair Publications Abbas Lavingia and District Joint Secretary Sadia Zaidi who as the sub continental custom prevails presented him with a garland of flowers. After a brief introduction and welcoming session, the team let the President rest for the two day visit ahead.

In his address, Rotary International President Ian Riseley highlighted the retention problem of members around the world. 120,000 members leave their clubs every year while 60% leave within two years as their expectations are not met. Growth in membership is slow but steady. There are 20-21% women members which needs to grow.

He emphasized that we need to keep on Making a Difference. Tree plantation needs to be taken up seriously.

1.2 million Rotarians worldwide need to plant a tree each believing in the importance of conservation of environment.

On the occasion, Rotary Pakistan Media Centre was launched. This public image building program designed by PP Abu Majid Idris has the primary purpose to promote the importance of relevance of Rotary’s motto of service above self and to enhance the image of Rotary by promoting the activities of grass root level of Rotarians highlighting their efforts through public image in Pakistan.

This program includes Data Centre for all clubs in Districts 3271 & 3272, Websites, Web Channel Social Media, Publication House, Educational TV Channel, Rotary Magazine, Product for fundraising.

AFTERNOON - DECEMBER 5,2017 A Press Conference was held at a local hotel after the Presidential Luncheon and the President along with DG Ovais A. Kohari, PDG Faiz Kidwai, PDG Aziz Memon and PDG Iqbal Qureshi addressed the queries of the members of the press.

Governor’s Banquet ...

EVENING - DECEMBER 5,2017 The Governor’s Banquet was held at Mohatta Palace Museum to honour the RI President Ian H. Riseley.

Rotarians and guests were present to greet the President and show gratitude on his visit and honouring the Rotarians of the District with his visit this year.

RI President Ian H. Riseley was greeted by the District Governor Ovais A. Kohari, First Lady Aaliyah Kohari and members of the District Team and was escorted to the venue by his aide PDG M. Faiz Kidwai. The RI President inaugurated the Mobile Library of the RPLM Pakistan Team and appreciated the team’s effort before heading towards the lawns of the Mohatta Palace where the program was being held.

Because of the Rotary Foundation, Rotarians know that if we have the ambition and put in the work, very little is truly beyond us. ~ RI President Ian H S Riseley

National Polio Plus Chair, PDG Aziz Memon gave the welcome address and the building of the Mohatta Palace Museum was lit up with the End Polio Now Campaign logo and that is how it remained for the remainder of the evening. He highlighted the team and the District’s focus to contain the virus and eliminate Polio in Pakistan. He thanked the President in incorporating Pakistan in his schedule in his visits to countries. He mentioned that by visiting, RI President will strengthen the District’s resolve to eradicate Polio and today the President has himself illuminated the End Polio Now sign on this historical monument. This visit to Pakistan is a reminder to everyone that the work is still not done and is ongoing and it was necessary to double our efforts in eradicating Polio of Pakistan and Afghanistan in order to overcome challenges.

District Governor Ovais A. Kohari commented that the magnificent Mohatta Palace stands to welcome the Rotar y International President Ian Riseley.

He thanked President Ian for taking Rotary to heights and Making a Difference in the lives of the people.

He mentioned that the theme and direction that the RI President has given everyone is simple, yet very effective, Rotary: Making a Difference. He said that Making a Difference is what we do every day, in ways large and small, we make a difference in the lives of people in our local communities, and in many cases, these are people we will never meet. We should be proud of Rotary’s heritage, and our own part in that heritage.

On speaking about the Polio Plus Program, DG Ovais A. Kohari said that “we are aware of the promise that we Rotarians have made with the children of the world. The onus to fulfill that promise is on us.”

He emphasized the mission of Total Literacy and Quality Education in Pakistan by mentioning the Teach Program, a comprehensive and consolidated program.

“Under this, a partnership with Government schools to upgrade and provide quality education and facilities to underprivileged and disadvantaged children, thus availing them the hope for a brighter future.” He believes that by the emphasis on these focus areas Rotarians are Making a Difference not only in their lives or their families but the community at large.

PDG M. Faiz Kidwai introduced the RI President following which RI President delivered his keynote address. President Riseley commented that he was happy to visit Pakistan and recognized the efforts of the National Polio Chair, PDG Aziz Memon. He motivated Rotarians to apply for successful Presidential Citation in which changes have been made giving a series of options to achieve the aims. The President emphasized announcing to the non Rotary world about Rotary’s charitable activities and the hours Rotarians devote and the money that is donated.

It will be a huge figure and this must be passed onto the non Rotary world. RI President reminded Rotarians to plant 10,000 trees to conserve the environment before Earth Day on April 22.

A dollar given to the Rotary Foundation has a great deal more muscle than a dollar given to most charities. ~ RI President Ian H S Riseley

District Secretariat’s Breakfast - December 6, 2017 The District Secretariat along with the District Governor Ovais Ahmed Kohari, First Lady Aaliyah Kohari, Aide to the President PDG M. Faiz Kidwai & Advisor to the DG Kishwar Tariq Allawala met with the President Ian Riseley over Breakfast. The District Governor introduced his District Team: Dr Aftab Imam - District Rotary Coordinator, Syed Kashif Rafi - District Joint Secretary Events, Sadia Zaidi - District Joint Secretary, Ali Hafeez Azmat - District Joint Secretary, Waqar Ahmed Shaikh Additonal Secretary - Events, Atiqua Vally - District Trainer.

The President was impressed by the fact that four members of the Secretariat (Faiz Kidwai, Kishwar Allawala, Ovais Kohari, Ali Hafeez) journeyed from Rotaractors to Rotarians and was interested in finding out how many Rotaractors became Rotarians in the District to date. A report for the same is being carried out.

Quaid-e-Azam M.A. Jinnah’s Mausoleum visit After breakfast, the RI President was taken to pay his respects to the Founder of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam M. A. Jinnah by visiting his Mausoleum on December 6, 2017. He was accompanied by the District Governor Ovais A. Kohari, PDG M. Faiz Kidwai, PDG Aziz Memon, First Lady Aaliyah Kohari, Advisor to the DG KIshwar Tariq Allawala and members of the District Secretariat. As per protocol, the Pakistan Naval Band played while ascending the steps to the Mausoleum and a prayer was read for the departed. The RI President wrote in the visitors’ book before leaving the premises.

To keep our clubs strong, we need to build a membership that reflects the communities we serve and that will continue to develop knowledgeable leaders for generations to come. ~ RI President Ian H S Riseley

Inauguration of the Library at the Jahangir Park The President was then taken to the Jahagir Park. The historical park was constructed in 1883 by a businessman Khan Bahadur Behramji for the recreational activities of the public. It was later handed over to the municipality. Due to the negligence of the municipality in the recent past the place became a hub for the criminals and drug addicts and the land mafia took control of the park. In 2016 the Sind Chief Minister took interest in clearing the park from the criminal mafia and in getting it renovated for public use. It was a challenge as the drug mafia threatened the builders with dire consequences but the architect Faiz Kidwai took up the challenge and started the renovation work and in record six months the park was ready and inaugurated by Bilawal Bhutto in July 2017. It is built on 5 acres at a cost of 20 crore.

The park has a rich variety of plants, bird aviary, dinosaurs, a canteen, a walking track, 1000 seat ampitheatre for cultural and art activities and a library with over 5000 books on diverse subjects. This beautiful family park is worth visiting and it has something of interest for all age groups.

Interview, Lunch and Departure The President with his aide PDG Faiz Kidwai, PDG Aziz Memon, DG Ovais and the secretariat team returned to the hotel for a session of interview for the GML before heading off to lunch by PDG Aziz Memon at Boat Club.

Finally, the President headed towards the Airport to fly to Islamabad, being accompanied by his aide PDG Faiz Kidwai.

The library set up by Rotary Pakistan Literacy Mission CEO, Muhammad Hammad, was inaugurated and a tree was planted by the RIP.

Please tell us something about yourself, family and professional life?

Juliet and I have four grandchildren; daughter Julie who lives in Melbourne with husband and two boys and Andrew who lives with his wife, daughter and son. I am an Accountant and operate a relatively small business which my brother now handles.

8 to 10 people administered by host club and they do what they want to do. It’s a great value for the young people’s time; they want to solve a particular issue like they would work to clean up a beach but not join a club. My appeal to them while celebrating 50 years of Rotaract is that they become a part of it as they are an important part of the present. Energy and enthusiasm is absolutely uplifting.

How did you get interested in Rotary?

I joined Rotary at the age of 31 years. I was the Guest Speaker of Rotary Club of Sanderham in 1978. It was an interesting meeting with the movers and shakers present.

I then joined Rotary and was the third President of the club in 1981.

Rotaract Clubs can be institution based but its best to have them community based. Institution based clubs are time based, as after graduation members disperse.

Would you like to briefly trace your journey in Rotary from a member to RI Director to President?

I got involved with Youth Exchange, Group Study Exchange in 1997 and was the DG in 1999-2000. I was nominated as Director from our Zone. It was Australia’s turn so I applied, or else I would have had to wait eight years. Later I became involved with the Board and was a Trustee, eventually leading to Presidentship.

What Areas of Service have you mostly been involved in?

Due to the nature of my employment, I have served on the Finance Board.

How supportive is your family with your busy schedule?

Juliet joined Rotary in 1995 and served as DG 2011-12. She understands Rotary and is very supportive.

What do you think is the best thing about Rotary?

1.2 million people Making a Difference and combining to do just that. What could one of us do to eradicate Polio but together with Bill Gates Foundation and others we are on the verge of ending it. Rotarians are good people and do not take a stance on politics. It encompasses all faiths.

What are the communities that you can identify?

There are cultural differences - people do in different ways.

It’s a difference in style - the way people do things, but common in desire to make significant impact in the world.

It has a lot of problems and cannot solve all of them.

Question of Peace Scholars - 50 to 60 people every year, not a world government - those 70 make a significant difference.

My sister said briefly on Rotarians:“It’s a land of people who like to do good things and Rotary gives a chance to do just that.”

What would you say about young people in Rotary? Are they disinterested or selfish? Any message for Rotaractors?

Young people are interested in what they do. They want to achieve something, they do not want to just meet people and have lunch with a group of 70 year olds, 30 year olds would come and they need motivation. UK average age is 74 years. Make Satellite Clubs. It’s a great success in the UK,

Rotaractors are the future of the organization. Involve them, talk to them and be around and you will see their enthusiasm is amazing.

Did you have any apprehension coming to Pakistan?

None at all.

Your impression of Rotary in Pakistan?

It would be very easy to focus on Polio. That would be a mistake. Do not make that mistake. Basic Education and Literacy is the future of society. It has a long term impact.

We have ignored the environment issues for too long. Tree plantation challenge was just to do something special so came up with a relatively simple task. I am thrilled the way it has turned out. Do plant more trees.

What are you expecting the Toronto Convention to be like?

It would be fun expecting 22,000 or more people from around the world. Venue is fabulous. A good hockey game opening and closing ceremony. It can seat around 50,000.

It has an amazing view. Toronto has beautiful people. Before or afterwards take the tour - lots of things happening, you will see it’s a lot easier to get into Canada.

How should we bring in New Members?

Take quality individuals from the incoming people.

Encourage clubs to be discerning. Get to know them very well. They understand the Rotary way and the strong ethical standards, and the motto of Service Above Self. Involve them in projects before they join. Rotary Connect sends checks to the DG for individuals who want to join. In some parts of the world, the DG does very little and that is a pity.

Once they are in it’s very difficult to throw them out so you have to be very careful while taking them in.

Would you share an inspiring moment in Rotary?

Most of us have a significant moment. In Rotary Assistance, Juliet & I met this family that we followed up on, and parents said you’ve given me back my family!

There seems to be some value to Rotarians to observe the needy at close quarters.The pain of others should generate pain in us - pain which is painful enough to stimulate compassion.

A man asked Dr.Carl Menninger "What would he advise a person to do if he felt a nervous breakdown coming on?"

Most people expected him to reply "Consult a psychiatrist." To their astonishment and surprise he replied, "Lock up your house, go across the rail road tracks, find someone in need and do something to help that person."

Life is all about service Service is an act of personal involvement. It is the result of an innate desire to give a little back to the society that has supported us - that has given us what we possess.

Service is not due to what happens to us. It is due to what happens with us. The riches we enjoy are due to others who have made it possible. Returning a part of what we have to the community is not only our duty but our obligation.

If you are dissatisfied with your lot in life, build a service station on it. A good way to forget your troubles is to help others out of theirs. Almost all of our unhappiness is a result of selfishness.

Instead, think in terms of what the other person wants, not just what you want. It is absolutely true that you can succeed best and quickest by helping others to succeed.

We all know what message our PRIP Clifford Dochterman gave to the Rotary world "Real Happiness Is Helping Others," the message of PRIP Rajendra K Saboo also speaks more or less the same "Look Beyond Yourself "and see how nicely PRIP Kalyan Banerjee puts it "Reach Within to Embrace Humanity."

All the world leaders of Rotary try to convey the message of Service in some form or the other.

"Remember the measure of life is not in its duration, but in its donation.Everyone can be great because everyone can serve." reminds Peter Marshall. No one achieves greatness without being of service, never reach out your hands unless you are willing to extend an arm and your heart.

Yes friends, life is all about service.

Give your best in every try At God’s footstool to confess, a poor soul knelt and bowed his head “I failed,” he cried. The Master said,“You did your best; that is success!”

Have you ever put your heart and soul into a task or goal that you desperately wanted to achieve? If yes, don’t get disappointed even if you haven’t been successful at achieving it. Because success is all about giving your best in whatever you do!

Many people never find out what they can achieve until life has passed them by and with it the chance to discover what they are capable of.

Some people are so scared of failure that they let the fear limit them. Since they are afraid to fail, they don’t try at all or they do it with disinterest and doubt in mind.

Think of Thomas Edison who is reputed to have found 10,000 ways how not to make a light bulb before he succeeded in making one . His success was built upon that k nowledge gained from the enthusiastic attempts he made earlier. Haven’t we witnessed this in our Polio Eradication Programme in India? We made many attempts to get rid of polio virus and ultimately succeeded when we were able to form Muslim Ulema Committee to help Rotary in making India Polio free.

“It is always better to have tried and failed, than never to have failed at all,” reminds Dave Fabre .

The key to success is to give a try with confidence, no matter what happens.

“You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don’t try,” says Beverly Sills. Every sincere attempt you make determines your success level because success is a matter of the mind. Therefore, be on the track of success by giving your best in every try.

It is the combination of high- minded idealism and hard - headed realism which makes Rotary such a great force for the good of mankind. ~ PRIP Nitish Laharry

RaC Karsaz attended Governor’s Banquet,it was in honor RI President gathering at Mohatta Palace.

The Club initiated a special project with the name of "Keep the Quaid's country clean" on 25th December which was successfully implemented in district 3271 and some parts of 3272. This is indeed a great initiative taken by district 3271 and Rotaract Karsaz on environment protection which is also a focus area of RI President this year. Rotaract Clubs (Karsaz, Kolachi, Strivers, Essa Creek, Nawabshah Central, Nawabshah Knightriders, Larkana and UAF) participated in this cleaning activity which was proudly hosted by Rotaract Club of Karachi Karsaz and initiated by Dr. Zunaira Akram.

Rotaract Club of Karachi Kehkashan organized an Awareness Session on Human Rights at Dar ul Sakun which mainly focused on Equality and our Rights and Responsibilities. The session on meditation was conducted by Rtr. Nawarah Mana Mukhtar from RAC Karsaz.

Rotary Club Karachi Sunset Millennium

Rotary Club Hyderabad Qasimabad organized a Polio Awareness Camp at Govt. Primary School Kumbhar Para, Qasim Chowk, Hyderabad.

RCKSM installed two water chillers with filter units at Govt Primary and Secondary School, Bizerta Lines.

The camp was largely attended by the students and children of the village. A stage drama was played by the students of school highlighting the importance of polio drops, while a presentation on polio was delivered by PP Imran Khan. The club also arranged a magic show and distributed social mobilization items during the camp.

Rotary Club Mirpurkhas The club arranged End Polio awareness activities and conducted interactive Literacy Awareness activities at local primary schools.

The polio social mobilization items were distributed among students and teachers. TheĂŠevent was coordinated by Secretary Prem Kumar as part of End Polio Now and Rotary Pakistan Literacy Mission.
