SUMMER ADVENTURE CAMP A S U M M E R F U LL OF WON D ER A N D DISCOVERY Summer Adventure Camps provide a unique learning experience for children 5-12 years of age where they will learn science concepts and interact with nature through hands-on activities, arts and crafts and more in indoor and outdoor settings. All-inclusive camps are offered in week-long, full-day formats. For camps held exclusively at Lauritzen Gardens, lunch is included in the camp price. Extended check-in and checkout packages are also available to purchase for an additional fee.

May 27- 31 | July 1 - 5 Reading is fun – but reading in the garden is fun-omenal! Inspire and celebrate your camper’s love of reading with five fantastic books, all about exploring nature and the natural world. Campers will complete activities connected to each of the books, and will have opportunities to read, discuss, and interact with their peers. Books are included in the camp price and will go home with campers.

July 15 - 19 Do you have a future entomologist in your family? Send them to camp this week to study the biology and ecology of insects. Campers will get up close and personal with the bugs found in the garden, make insect-inspired art projects, and learn all about insects’ special role in our vast ecosystem.

Join us for a week-long exploration of the weird and wonderful bugs of our world!

REF U NDS AND C A N C E L L ATIONS A refund equal to 50% of the purchase price may be given when the refund is requested a minimum of four weeks before the start of the camp, this includes any goods or services purchased in conjunction with the camp. If a refund is requested within four weeks of camp, no refund will be given. The refund of one or more camps may affect the sale prices charged in the previous transaction, and therefore may affect the refund. In the event that multiple camps have been purchased, and a refund is requested, amounts refunded will begin with the least expensive camp and progress higher in purchase price as needed according to purchases within the same transaction.

When possible, Lauritzen Gardens can transfer a camp registration to another session. However, transfer requests are based on availability.

YOUTH AND FAMILY PROGRAMS L I L’ S P ROU T S Experience the magic of Lauritzen Gardens with your little one! In Lil’ Sprouts classes (pre-K, ages 3-5), children and adults work together to explore, play and engage their senses, all while learning about nature, shapes, colors, ABC’s and 123’s. Come enjoy story time, hands-on activities, crafts, garden exploration and creative play as you discover the wonders of nature with your child or grandchild. Each registration is good for one child and one adult.

Members $8, Non-members $18 Groundhogs In this month’s class we will learn about the tradition of Groundhog Day and Punxsutawney Phil, who exits his burrow each year to predict the start of spring. Preschoolers will learn about groundhogs and have the opportunity to explore shadows on a winter garden walk.

Going Green: Chlorophyll One of the most important pigments in nature is chlorophyll. It gives plants their green color and helps them create their own food through photosynthesis. In this month’s class we will learn about chlorophyll, investigate color in the classroom, and go on a hunt to find different hues in the garden.

YOUTH AND FAMILY PROGRAMS FAM I LY W O RK S HOP S Celebrate nature and art and create memories with these wonderful family activities! We provide you with everything you need to create your project, along with instruction and some inspiration.

Soap-a-saurs!

Using an aloe vera base, families will create a herd of dinosaur soaps to take home and use. Soaps may be customized with a selection of molds, colors, and essential oils. Each family will make two dinosaur egg soaps (with dinosaurs inside), eight miniature dinosaur soaps, and four 1” cubed dinosaur soaps, and then can tour the exhibit BRICKLIVE: Brickosaurs.

Springtime Wreath It’s spring – when the garden turns green for a new growing season! Join us to transform wreath forms into beautiful and functional pieces with green fleece and a selection of colorful silk flowers. Each family will create two 8” wreaths.

Block Dinosaurs and Plants Everyone likes a good brick build. In this blockbuster family workshop, we’ll be making our own toy brick dinosaurs and a plant for them to enjoy. Each family will create two small dinosaurs and one plant.

Sets are suitable for ages 6 and up. Younger chidren will need extra adult supervision.

Mother’s Day Moon Lamps We love Mom to the moon and back!

In this workshop, each family will work together to personalize one moon lamp by adding swirls of colors and patterns to make it as unique as their love for Mom. Lamp set comes with a 4.75” moon-shaped ball, wooden stand, switch, and battery.

ADULT PROGRAMS - HORTICULTURE EA RTH DAY SU CCUL ENT MUGS Celebrate Earth Day by recycling and planting all in one class! Each participant should bring a mug of their choosing, and the instructor will teach how to drill holes for drainage (participants get to keep the drill bit so they can continue making recycled plant vessels). Then, each mug will be filled with soil and a new succulent plant to take home.

All participants need to bring one mug to class.

MOUNTED OR CHIDS Step into the enchanting world of botanical artistry at an orchid mounting workshop, where we invite you to explore the symbiosis between orchids and cork bark. Join us for a serene and insightful experience, as we delve into the meticulous process of elevating orchids through the ancient technique of mounting on cork bark.

Once mounted, your orchid can be hung or placed on a flat surface for easy viewing.

BONSAI K OK EDAMA Join Nodest Home Plants for a bonsai kokedama workshop, where nature and art will converge to create miniature masterpieces. Kokedama is Japanese for moss ball, and is a style of potting plants in a ball of moss. This class will feature low-maintenance Ficus ginseng plants, prized for their beautiful waxy green leaves and distinctive pot-bellied trunks. Participants will work with soil, moss, and twine to build and bind their bonsai kokedama and learn tips for its care.

ADULT PROGRAMS - HORTICULTURE

BO NS A I W O RK S H OP If you are curious about the art of bonsai and want to get started in this hobby that is steeped in tradition, this workshop is for you! Learn essential bonsai techniques in this course and work alongside recognized bonsai artist, Max Miller and experienced Nebraska Bonsai Society members who will assist you in styling your very own bonsai plant. Each participant will receive a living specimen, a pot with soil, and will learn how to perfect and maintain their bonsai plant.

BUIL D YOUR OW N MOSS T E R R AR IUM Bring a little nature into your life by making a moss terrarium with Moss Hunters. Select from a variery of moss, shells, and rocks and learn to make the perfect terrarium for your home.They will provide all the materials needed, just bring yourself and be ready to learn and have a good time. After the class is over, you will get to leave with one handmade terrarium. Get ready to get your hands dirty and create!

FOOD & DRINK C H AR CUTER IE CL ASSES Welcome to boarding school with Best Of Omaha winner, Artisan Boards of Omaha. In this class, you will learn how to make a meat rose, and find out about different varieties of cheeses as well as fun tidbits about charcuterie.

You’ll be guided step by step as you create your own board to take home and enjoy. While you learn, you can enjoy samples from a custom board made just for the event. We hope you leave with the knowledge to create your own board to feed and entertain friends and family.

TEXTILE ARTS GIVE IT A W HOR L This introductory spinning class will help you go from fluff to stuff! Learn about different types of supported and suspended (drop) spindles and learn the ancient practice of creating yarn. Students will have the opportunity to learn basic vocabulary, try different techniques and learn the science behind the fiber magic!

A variety of spindles will be available to try and fiber will be provided. All animal fibers are ethically sourced and, whenever possible, purchased locally.

INDIGO FAB R IC DYEING In this class we will look at the long and tumultous history of blue dyes in human culture, as well as the methods of creating an indigo vat through a fermentation process. We will also explore shibori, a Japanese mark making process, to create our own unique cloth artworks. Fabric will be provided for this class. Participants are welcome to bring in 1-2 small natural fabric pieces from home to dye with the excess of the vat we create in class. This class is built for all levels of experience.

BASKET WEAVING

Basket weaving is one of the oldest and most widespread art forms in the world and weaving techniques have been passed down from generation to generation over thousands of years. Join Jeannie Sisson and learn how to transform botanical materials into baskets that can be enjoyed for years to come. Each workshop allows participants to get creative and experiment with different materials and patterns to create unique pieces. Participants will be amazed at how quickly they can weave beautiful and functional baskets, with just a few materials.

BOLT This basket is a fun weaving project. To ensure the right shape, participants will learn to weave over a “mold” that will be removed after the basket is completed. All materials will be provided and multiple color options will be available for this project.

BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION

Whether you are a seasoned artist or a complete beginner, our roster of botanical illustration workshops will teach you the basics of botany and the artistic skills needed to draw plants in a technically detailed manner. Led by horticulturist, artist, and member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, Camille Werther, participants will exercise creativity, learn about plant families, and explore the natural world. Every session will feature different specimens, making for a new experience each time. Supply lists will be provided on the registration page.

D RAW I N G F LOWERS This is a repeating class with different flowers to draw each time.We’ll draw flowers, learn more about their floral families, and collect our art into a colorful sketchbook. Enjoy slowing down, tuning in to the experience of the garden, and sketching to relax, while creating a record of the beauty around you. These journals are a great start to a bound journal, sketchbook insert, and a lovely piece of art on their own. Each class will make their paper journals, learn the technique to make more at home, and fill their journals with beautiful illustrations and foraged nature.

VISUAL ARTS C YA NO T Y PE PRIN T IN G An alternative process of photography, cyanotype was invented by Sir John Hershel in 1842. Cyanotype is a beautiful photographic printing process that produces a Prussian blueprint with UV lighting. Today this striking artform is not only used to document nature but also to create unique images on paper, fabric or other found materials. In this workshop, led by Josie Langbehn, participants will explore cyanotype with natural flowers on paper, and be able to take home their own beautiful artwork. All materials provided.

In this art form, creators layers acrylic paint on a flexible plate using organic materials to make interesting shapes and textures. Each student will learn Gelli® printing techniques and make 3-5 prints of their own design to take home.

BASICS OF WATER COL OR PAINTING

Make various plant forms come to life with the vibrant colors of pastels! Learn how to manipulate pastels to enhance color, blend color, define lines, and add depth and definition to a drawing and discover how to add abstract elements to your work.

Combining still life drawing with creative interpretation, each class offers the option of completing multiple compositions of different plants. Experimentation is highly encouraged and all skill levels are welcome.

Explore the world of watercolor and learn basic techniques to create beautiful and colorful works of art. This course will focus on the fundamentals of watercolor painting, including techniques, materials, tools, color, value, and rendering in watercolor. Absolutely no experience is necessary!

This is a must-see tour where you will enjoy one of nature’s treasures, and find unique birding and photography opportunities.

The tour includes two private viewings of the Sandhill cranes: an evening viewing (at sunset) at The Crane Trust, and morning viewing (at sunrise) at Rowe Sanctuary in Kearney, Neb. Transporation, hotel accommodations, meals and snacks are provided. Rates are $375 to $450, depending on membership status and lodging options. Registration and payment are due by February 20.

Join us for a leisurely birding experience during the peak of spring migration at Lauritzen Gardens! This will be an inclusive and accessible bird outing for all skill levels and for those with mobility or health concerns. Led by the president of the Audubon Society of Omaha, Christine Prescott, the route will be approximately 1.5 miles in total and will be exclusively on asphalt and concrete, with several benches and stops along the way. Wheelchair-accessible bathrooms will be available at the start and end of the tour.

Lauritzen Gardens hosts a surprising diversity of bird life. The list of 161 species sighted at the garden includes 23 different warblers, beautiful little birds that migrate up the Missouri River in spring.
