July 6 through 10 | July 20 through 24 Exploring the various environments of Lauritzen Gardens and Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium, campers will gain knowledge about protecting our Earth. Subjects such as conservation, sustainability, and renewability will be covered through engaging crafts and lessons. Single days and before and after care not available.

June 1 through 5 or July 13 through 17 Observing the way music and writing are influenced by nature, campers will spend time in diverse gardens listening to the words and melodies of our environment. Campers will be shown how to craft simple instruments from natural materials and guided though creative writing activities.

June 15 through 19 or July 27 through 31 Delving into our Earth’s wild habitats, campers will be able to experience the skills needed to survive in nature. Tracking knowledge every day that covers basic first aid, identifying plants, and other survival skills.

May 25 through 29 | June 29 through July 3 August 3 through 7 Campers will use their senses and imagination to explore the gardens and learn how nature impacts art. Using natural materials found throughout the gardens, campers will create original pieces of art.

YOUTH AND FAMILY PROGRAMS L I L’ SP ROU T S

Adults and children ages 3 to 5 work together while learning about nature, shapes, colors, ABC’s, and 123’s. Each child will create a craft, devour a snack, and experience a short garden excursion. For more information and to register visit lauritzengardens.org or call (402) 346-4002, ext. 253.

Classes are held on select Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and Thursdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Each registration is good for one child and one adult.

Members $8, Non-members $18 May 6 or 7 | Frogs and Toads Learn about the differences between frogs and toads as well as what they eat, where they live, and how they use their senses like us.

August 5 or 6 | Pollination Equipped with magnifying lenses, we will explore the English perennial border and identify basic parts of a flower and keep our eyes peeled for pollinators in action.

September 2 or 3 | Butterflies Participants will search for butterflies in the arrival garden and learn about the life cycle of these amazing winged insects.

October 7 or 8 | Bats How many insects does one bat in Omaha eat at night? We will answer this question while searching for bat food on the woodland trail.

Spend time as a family at Lauritzen Gardens completing a craft project and exploring a related garden with a guide. Please note: only one craft is included per family. All workshops are held from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

LEGO® Brick Planters | April 18 Take a guided walk through the Nature Connects® exhibit. Upon returning to the classroom, families will build three planters using LEGO® bricks and then fill them with succulents.

Engage your little Picasso and enjoy a noexperience-required art class together, directed by trained, local artists, who will guide you step-by-step through the featured painting.

In order for curious minds to bloom, it is essential to plant a love of reading at a young age. Join the Omaha Public Library in the garden each month for stories that celebrate gardens, plants, insects and more, while discovering the joys of nature, movement, music, and literature. Programs are presented from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and are geared for preschool aged children, but all ages are welcome. This is a free program.

BOTANICAL DESIGN

Make beautiful floral designs to display at home or provide as a gift. Each workshop has its own unique theme which allows you to enjoy a new experience each time you participate. Participants will learn basic floral design skills that can be used to create all types of arrangements. No floral design knowledge or experience is necessary. All supplies are included. To ensure the freshest, longest-lasting arrangements, our designers select flowers from the warehouse the week of class to fit the class theme. Explore techniques for drawing in graphite and adding color, shading, and blending using artist’s colored pencils or watercolor pencils. No prior drawing experience is necessary. A supply list will be provided upon registration. Classes are held from 6 to 8 p.m.

Instructor: Camille Werther Botanical Drawing for Beginners: A World of Seeds | Three sessions: May 13, 20 and 27 Seeds are as interesting and as varied as the plants they will become. Have fun learning to use artist’s watercolor pencils to illustrate a variety of seeds in this class. We’ll draw them in graphite, and then add a burst of color with the watercolor pencils. Pre-registration is required by May 6.

Members $50, Non-members $60 Botanical Drawing for Beginners: Trees and Leaves | Two sessions: June 10 and 17 Trees contribute so much to our lives. Cool off this June with a drawing class dedicated to shade trees.

Learn how trees are classified and how this applies to illustrating them. Explore ways of recording leaf structure through rubbings, tracings, and sketches. Pre-registration is required by June 3.

With a wealth of garden plantings, landscape features, and natural areas, Lauritzen Gardens provides habitat for a variety of wildlife, including over 50 species of butterflies. Join volunteer butterfly experts, Holly Hofreiter and Joan Langabee to learn which butterflies visit Lauritzen Gardens throughout the season and find butterfly “hot spots”on a guided butterfly walk.

WAR BLE R WALK

Located in the riverfront hills near downtown Omaha, Lauritzen Gardens hosts a surprising diversity of bird life. The list of 143 species sighted at the garden includes 23 different warblers, beautiful little birds that migrate up the Missouri River in spring. In celebration of Nebraska Migratory Bird Month in May, director of conservation, Jim Locklear, will lead a walking tour of Lauritzen Gardens that will highlight the natural history of these captivating travelers.

QIGONG AND TAI CHI

Qigong (CHEE - GONG) is a practice of coordinated movements and breathing done in repetition for clearing, cultivating, and balancing energy within the body while also building strength and stability. It is a gentle form of exercise that can be thought of as a moving meditation. This methodof coordinating breath with body movements helps bring awareness within, reduce stress, anxiety and tension, and also promotes restful sleep. Ty Thornock is a part time green woodworker from Persia, Iowa. He uses locally sourced wood, mostly fallen branches from storms and trees being removed to create beautiful objects for your home.

Learn about the fascinating world of natural fabric dyes in this series of workshops. Classes are held from 2 to 4 p.m. Pre-registration is required a week prior to the course.

Instructor: Ashton Page May 31 | Indigo Intensive Ashton Page will introduce participants to the illustrious and alluring Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria), a dye with an interesting history and intense color. Each participant will create their own personal starter vat of Indigo in the fermentation method. This is an amazing hands-on opportunity for creatives who desire to make their own vats, but want a bit of guidance. Each participant will leave with their own starter to make another Indigo vat later. Bring your own natural fabrics to dye in the communal vat. Designed for beginners and experienced dyers alike.

Members $49, Non-members $59 June 7 | Exploration of Fabrics This class is for the curious investigator in all of us! As with all natural dyes, Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) reacts differently, in both color and robustness, to different fibers. In this class, participants will experiment with protein fibers (from animals) and cellulose fibers (from plants) and will learn different dipping techniques used to create a variety of shades.

Ashton Page will guide creatives through the process of building a swatch book for future dye projects. All supplies are provided. Participants may bring their own fibers to dye in the communal vat after the swatch books have been completed.

Members $49, Non-members $59 July 26 | Woad Apron This class is designed for anyone who loves a soft blue and is in need of a new apron! Woad (Isatis tinctoria) is the cousin of Indigo, and this dye bonds particularly well with cellulose fibers. With instruction from Ashton Page, participants will create a communal Woad vat and dye their own beautiful hemp apron. All supplies provided. Participants may bring their own fibers to dye in the communal vat after the aprons have been completed.

Venture out into the gardens to collect plant material, and then learn the process of preparing, bundling, and steaming the plant parcels. Create your own starter plant soak solution to take home to eco print with at a later date. Ashton is requesting that participants bring in old items of clothing made of natural materials to breath new life into.

Our garden is our home habitat. For most of us, it’s the landscape we spend the most time in. If it’s designed to support a great variety of life it will be full of surprise, adding intrigue and interest to every day. Expanding on the subject of The Living Landscape: Designing for Beauty and Biodiversity in the Home Garden, co-authored by Rick Darke and Doug Tallamy, this richly illustrated talk will present ideas for the plant selection, design, and care of home and community landscapes that are practical and durable, but also beautiful and joyfully livable.

The café will be open to purchase dinner prior to the lecture and a complimentary dessert reception and booksigning will follow.

All aboard for a fun-filled weekend! Botanical meets mechanical at Lauritzen Gardens. Get up close and personal with two of the greatest locomotives to ever power Union Pacific Railroad at Kenefick Park.

Visit the model railroad garden to discover bridgechugging, tunnel-zooming G-scale trains winding through replicas of Omaha’s favorite landmarks.

Small children can enjoy complimentary rides on a classic 1949 King Amusement Company On-Track Train Ride. With Gn15, H, N, and O-scale model train exhibits, railroad ditties from entertainer Paul Siebert, children’s activities, and 100 acres of display gardens, there is plenty to capture the visitors’ imagination and celebrate all things train and track. Available for purchase at any participating venue during the event, a $20 family pass (good for 2 adults and their dependent children), includes admission to and bus/trolley transportation between all 5 locations.
