executive director

Thanksto our donors, members, visitors, volunteers, and staff, 2022 was another incredible year of growth for Lauritzen Gardens. We continue to be humbled by and grateful for those who support our mission and who ensure that our community can have a thriving public garden and meaningful experiences in nature year-round.

It’s been truly heartwarming to experience the return of our many guests and members following the COVID-19 pandemic and, as 2022 brought us closer to the life we lived pre-pandemic, our team was able to bring back many of the events and activities that had been on hold since 2020. We experienced significant growth in our education programs, including a sold-out summer camp program for our youth. We also continued to make progress on our conservation efforts, including seed collecting for endangered plant species, biodiversity surveys on property and numerous opportunities to share our knowledge through lectures, tours, workshops and onsite classes.

We started the year with a homegrown exhibit we called Wonders Under Glass. Through the nature-inspired work of local glass blower Matthew Shrader, photographer Chris Helzer, and our own garden staff, we creatively showcased the life cycle of a plant from seed to flower and educated our public on the imperiled state of many of our regional flora. Exploring the exhibition, attendees acquired a deeper understanding of the many wonders of the natural world. They also gained valuable insights into the fundamental requirements for plant growth, the fascinating process of pollination, and the vital role played by plants in Nebraska’s diverse ecosystems. Especially unique was the sculpture installation of the blowout penstemon that “grew” throughout the exhibit, changing from a sprout, to a plant with buds, and then to a flower-bearing specimen.

From glass sculptures to gnomes, it was a truly vibrant year. The spring was greeted by over 500,000 daffodil blooms as we continued our progress toward a goal of “A Million Daffodils”. In May, we held a ribbon cutting, officially reopened our redesigned Japanese park, and debuted the new karesansui (dry rock garden). Throughout the summer months, we hosted a gnome scavenger hunt, with gnomes created exclusively for Lauritzen Gardens by four local artists. In the fall, we hosted our annual fundraising event and experience, the Lauritzen Gardens Antiques Show - an amazing weekend that raised more than $1.4 million dollars to support the garden. In November and December, we continued our well-loved horticultural representation of the holiday season, Merry & Bright, transforming our floral display hall into “Rockefeller Center”, including thousands of poinsettias, tall buildings, trumpeting angels, and brilliant lights.

2022 was also a year of continued progress on our major capital projects. By year-end, we had raised roughly $25 million of the $28 million needed to construct the major projects in the Play and Grow campaign, the horticulture complex and Sofia’s Play Garden. Construction on the first part of the horticulture complex, the Claire M. Hubbard Plant Production Center progressed nicely, with an anticipated opening in late summer 2023. With 15,000 square feet of greenhouse space, this new facility will ensure we are able to continue to grow and display the finest plants for our public for many years to come. We also broke ground in October 2022 on Sofia’s Play Garden. With over an acre of displays and experiences, this new garden feature will engage and delight children and their families in new and exciting ways.

None of the projects, programs, horticultural displays, or memories made in the garden would be possible without the generous support of our community. We celebrate the successes of 2022 with you on the following pages, knowing that you helped to bring them to fruition. On behalf of the staff and board, thank you for making 2022 a year of continued growth and amazement for Lauritzen Gardens.

garden and grounds

highlights

- In April, more than 500,000 daffodil blooms showed their cheery yellow and white blooms along the daffodil walk, made possible by generous contributions to the “A Million Daffodils” campaign. In late October, garden staff planted 50,000 additional daffodil bulbs to complete the fifth phase of the project.

- In the Japanese park, construction of the dry stone garden and a new boardwalk, the addition of new plantings, seating, and paved walkways, and the refurbishment of the torii gates was completed in May 2022 and the garden was reopened for enjoyment, exploration, and quiet contemplation at a special ceremony.

- Construction continued on the new Claire M. Hubbard Plant Production Center, an $8 million project that will modernize the garden’s

greenhouse operations and better support the organization’s growing plant collection. This complex will include 15,000 square feet of state-of-the-art greenhouse structures and a 7,000 square foot building with office space, a conservation laboratory, and a seed bank.

- In late October, we joyously broke ground and unveiled the name of our new children’s garden: Sofia’s Play Garden, a tribute to the esteemed donor family whose generosity has propelled this new garden. 2022 was a year dedicated to the meticulous preparation of the site and the thoughtful refinement of our designs. Contractors re-routed the main sidewalk to make additional room for the garden space and started soil work on the 1-acre site. We envision Sofia’s Play Garden as a magical sanctuary, inviting children to explore, learn, and cultivate a deep love for the natural world.

highlights conservation

- In 2022, we made new seed collections of blowout penstemon (Penstemon haydenii), a highly-endangered wildflower native to the Nebraska Sandhills, for which we have established a conservation seed bank.

- We collected seed from bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) stands in the central Great Plains. From this seed, living collections will be established at a network of collaborating botanical gardens in order to safeguard the valuable drought-tolerant nature of these trees.

- We continued to study the biodiversity of our 100-acre property, with the aim of practicing the best possible ecological stewardship. To date,

161 bird species, 62 butterfly species, and 50+ species of bees have been observed.

- To help re-establish the butternut (Juglans cinerea) in its native range, we planted a small grove of trees in the Arboretum and Oberman Bird Sanctuary. The grove was planted with saplings grown from seed collected from a healthy stand of trees in southeast Nebraska.

- The conservation department hosted 14 on-site educational tours, classes, and workshops, including university classes from Creighton, Metropolitan Community College, Iowa State, and the University of Nebraska.

9
10

- 11,228 children made the garden their classroom on field trips, giving them an experience in the natural world and creating connections between their curriculum and the garden’s plant collection, a 189.46% increase over 2021 totals.

- 10 weeks of summer camp were held onsite, and had 1,685 participants, an official sell out. Additionally, more than 800 students from the Council Bluffs Summer Learning Program enjoyed engaging and fun programming in a garden-based setting.

- Lil’ Sprouts programs, where adults and children (pre-K, ages 3-5) work together while learning about nature, shapes, colors, ABC’s and 123’s, saw a 49.78% increase in attendance in 2022.

- Adult programs were held year-round in 2022, with 1,668 adults taking part in nature-based educational programs at the garden.

- Two festivals for schools were held in 2022, the Arbor Day Festival in April and the Goldenrod Festival in September. Working with a variety of organizations across Nebraska and Iowa, 2,783 students were able to participate in activities, receive information on the importance of trees, plant and animal conservation, and learn to be stewards of our environment.

- Ghoulish Garden Adventure, the garden’s celebration of the things in nature that make the fall and Halloween so festive, saw record attendance of 1,736 (89% increase over 2021).

- In collaboration with community partners, Omaha Circus Arts, Omaha Mounted Police, and Santa Claus, the education department hosted a sold out Family Fun Night during Bright Nights.

highlights

- The development team continued to make progress on the garden’s Play and Grow capital campaign, raising $25 million of the $28 million dollar goal by the end of 2022, with lead gifts secured for all three projects that the campaign supports.

- The Lauritzen Gardens Guild made a record $95,000 contribution to the garden and its education programs through their daffodil delivery program, their summer garden party, Summer Soiree and their holiday luncheon, Deck the Holidays.

- The garden’s largest fundraiser, the Lauritzen Gardens Antiques Show, made a splash with a mix of colorful decor, experts, and antiques exhibitors. The bright and bold weekend, led by visionary chair Cindy Bay, honorary chairs Polina and Bob Schlott and event chairs Ellie Clinch and Patricia Stillmock, raised more than $1.4 million dollars to support the garden.

visitor services highlights

- From January 15 to May 8, the exhibit Wonders Under Glass featured an impressive series of glass art installations by Matthew Shrader of Shrader Made Glass. Paper art animal and insect installations by garden staff and Chris Helzer’s captivating photography added another layer of visual delight to the exhibit. Visitors were immersed in the wonders of the plant life cycle, discovering the captivating journey of a plant’s growth from a minuscule seed to a magnificent blossom, and learned about the signature plants of three unique Nebraska habitats.

- On May 2, Lauritzen Gardens was announced as the winner of “Best Attraction” in the 2022 Omaha Metropolitan Area Tourism Awards, a program recognizing the best tourism businesses in Douglas, Sarpy and Pottawattamie counties.

- Efforts to connect and engage our community with the natural world on social media resulted in a 10% growth in followers on Instagram, a 6% growth of followers on Facebook, and an increase in the number of contacts in our email database of 12.25%.

- The garden collaborated with local artists Greg Macdonald, Diane Mattern, Matthew Shrader, and Mell Smith, on the summer scavenger hunt The Great Gnome Escape. Visitors embarked on an adventure through the garden, searching for 36 gnomes - choosing from three indoor and outdoor gnome hunts that varied in difficulty.

- During the summer months, the trams shifted gears and provided a crucial role in ensuring the continued accessibility of the garden while construction on the main sidewalk took place. The trams moved all guests in and out of the garden, returning to offer their 50-minute narrated tours once the sidewalk reopened.

- In 2022, the garden greeted visitors from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. 18.39% of the garden’s total attendance was from visitors who live outside of Nebraska. Guests were also recorded from 8 other countries, as far away as Australia.
