How did your family get started in the pizza business?
My dad and uncle opened Bay Ridge Pizza in 1978, and I had the oppor tunity to grow up in the family busi ness for as long as I can remember. It’s been a hit since we opened back then, and I’ve personally loved the legacy we are excited to be a part of so many families. I get to see the
history firsthand every day, watching our customers bring in their fam ilies, kids, and their kids’ kids that we have grown to love over our 44 years in business. There’s no better reward!
That’s so special. Pizza is the uni versal love language, for sure! Speaking of – what is the recipe to your success?
Our recipe for success has always boiled down to two main ingredi ents: consistency and hard work. We’re incredibly loyal to both the customers and staff that have been a part of the Bay Ridge Pizza expe rience. They’re like family! Plus, the business is active in the community, donating to several fundraising ef forts. We’ve also been able to adapt to the times and have built up our social presence on key platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
You can also find us on all major delivery service platforms, like Grub Hub, UberEats, or our own seamless local delivery options.
That’s great! We know no two pizza spots are the same…so what makes the Bay Ridge Pizza menu so unique?
Well, you know, in 2022, we earned the title of “THE BEST” for our pizza and catering options. Our catering menu is incredibly diverse, highlight ing our commitment to helping you make the perfect social event. You’ll see favorites like our classic pies or a local favorite – Chicken Francese. It’s served in rich lemon butter
sauce and delicious Italian bread… our customers can’t get enough! We’ve also built out our gluten-free options and were one of the first spots to adopt the movement. We’ve been serving 40+ gluten-free options since 2000.

Tell us all about the HoM store. What was the concept behind it?
Absolutely. We’re pleased to say that after 21 years of research and de velopment, we’ve come up with the perfect solution for all of your foodie needs. From appetizers to our second-to-none drink menu, we’ve got something special to satisfy every preference. Third Avenue in Bay Ridge Brooklyn is one of the longest commercial corri dors in New York, and an eager group of volunteers is working hard to keep that small town in a big city vibe well into the future. After an unsuccessful BID campaign in 2020, Covid-19, and the stepping down of its beloved leader for 20+ years Bob Howe, the current Merchants of Third Avenue Civic Im provement Association works with local politicians, community leaders, small businesses and the community at large to continue the traditional as well as start some new and exciting events on the Avenue (hello Open Streets!)
Current President Dan Texeira along with Vice President Jeanine Condon have a passion for small business and community. Along with their exec utive board they devote countless hours to our community quality of life. Throughout the Pandemic and beyond they have quietly helped neighbors in need, supported the “shop local” initiatives, and meet with business own ers and residents to help in any way possible. Through partnerships with local politicians like Councilman Brannan the Merchants of Third Avenue are able to bring to the avenue holiday lights, Strolls, Festivals, and more. In addition the Board makes an effort to raise money for local charities and support each other. They work with the community boards, other BIDS, as well as the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce who is a strong partner of the Association. Together these groups bring a sense of community and neigh borhood found only here in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
Membership is open to all community stakeholders and all are encourage to join, participate, and support the organization. The group volunteers time, energy, and resources to better the Community at large and it shows in the smiles of faces along the avenue, new shops opening, neighbors helping one another and a community spirit unlike anything around. New initiatives are underway and the group is working on growing its executive board and outreach. The Association is optimistic for the future and sees third avenue as strong, thriving, and continuing to be the anchor of Bay Ridge.

Tell us – What’s the history behind the name “Pilo Arts?”
Pilo Arts is a Latin name that trans lates to Arts of Hair. That’s exactly the kind of message we wanted to convey to customers that step into our shop, we would treat their hair as a work of art, and honor their true sense of self. Over the years, we got to see Pilo Arts continue to evolve and grow, changing the Bay Ridge area with each client we served. It was spectacular.
Tell us about your services. What do you offer?
As the professional cut and color salon in our neighborhood, we’ve worked hard for years to build a loyal clientele. The reason? We offer unique services that set us apart from other salons in our area. Customer favorites include spa services, like bikini waxing, facials, and tweezing, as well as hairdress ing, color, and correction. We offer
these services at the most competitive pricing possible and in Groupon packages, allowing clients to grab some great deals for their spa experience. Plus, we have separate rooms for our customers who are sensitive to fumes or may need more privacy – like our clientele in the Muslim community. We have a hijab-friendly room. INTERVIEW WITH DIVINE J9How did you get started in the spa industry?
I’ve had my own private practice (Divine J9) for energy healing and sound therapy for over half a decade. After a month-long pilgrimage in Joshua Tree, I received what I call a “Divine Download,” or an inner message to expand and create a sacred space for New Yorkers to relax and recharge. We all could use a little more of that, I’d say! So, Body Mind Salt was born. It’s exceptional in its own right and is the first and only luxury healing sanctuary in Brooklyn. We offer a wide range of complementary and alternative medicine modalities in a tranquil en vironment that promotes true core healing and deep rest, helping visitors step into a higher level of self-service and care.
That sounds amazing. What’s your favorite service offering? And why?
The float tank is one of my favorite modalities. It’s like drifting off into the cosmos under a starry night sky. With over 1,000 pounds of Epsom salts, it creates a true zero-gravity environment that takes all the pressure off the body, allowing for pain relief, muscle recovery, and energy healing. It’s no wonder why many major sports teams and the U.S. military have their own float tanks!
My second favorite is the Crystal Bed. It’s an FDA-approved medical device, and it’s great to help reduce inflammation and pain associated with fatigue
and injuries – whether they’re older or recent. In fact, it was able to help me make tremendous progress with an old sports injury I had, so it definitely makes my favorites list.
Why did you pick Bay Ridge to open the spa?
Well, I’m a native Brooklyn girl! I was born and raised in Bay Ridge. I might have lived and traveled worldwide, but my heart still had quite a calling for NYC. Little did I know what the Universe had in store! My family has owned our building for some time and, as serendipity orchestrated it, the space was available for my gut renovation project. The rest is history!
What should we expect to see from Body | Mind | Salt | in the upcoming year?
Well, I’m pleased to announce that as an eco-friendly, woman-owned small business, Body Mind Salt is in the process of becoming a 1% for the Planet business. We want to promote greener ways of operation and make a direct impact on the planet we share. Additionally, we will be expanding our Wellness Workshop offerings in the Salt Cave.
