Photo of the week

Fight the good fight This week’s paper has a couple of examples about not giving up, lessons in perseverance gleaned from forums including a football pitch and a municipal council meeting hall.

The young players of the St. Lazare Stallions’ football team had a remarkable burst of teamwork and pride in order to move past a tied game and stubbornly hold onto a slight lead to the very end, ensuring a victorious outcome.

Another battle in a local political arena pitted a divided council over whether to save a revered, though compromised, historical artifact. The Ste. Anne de Bellevue hose tower that sits atop City Hall was initially faced a motion for its destruction in August. Though some councillors cited obsolescence coupled with mounting maintenance costs in advocating for its demise, the mayor and two-like minded councillors voted to preserve it on the grounds of historical significance.

Mayor Paola Hawa went so far as to invoke a ‘right of reconsideration’ to extend the motion’s review period and launched a crowd-sourced funding campaign in an attempt to protect part of the town’s heritage. But to no avail as the proverbial hammer came down this week and the landmark will face its demise in the coming days.

The outcome, though not what was fought for, should not be considered a loss.

The only loss in this case would have been never taking a stand in the fight in the first place.

Dear Editor: editor@yourlocaljournal.ca Dear Editor, Poor Robert Spencer the disgraced ex-councillor. Was he a pawn in a nasty game?

Surely he was not alone?

You could think that Spencer had help writing the list of frivolous complaints to the MRC against the mayor and council. You could also believe the vicious, vindictive ex-Director General, hell bent on bankrupting the Town of Hudson, used him to get back at the mayor for suspending her.

Almost two years of ignoring the notifications and not showing up at caucus meetings; attending those Town Council meetings that he had to (or not be paid for his monthly stipend); conducting a smear campaign behind the backs of the council. This is not the way a councillor represents his constituents.

I do hope the Town of Hudson goes after Spencer for the $120,000 he wasted of the town’s money. I’m sure his “friends” will help to pay the bill.

Not only will this repay us, the taxpayers, but hopefully serve as a warning to anyone else thinking of making false, offensive accusations against the mayor and council.

Mayor reports on Rigaud’s financial health James Armstrong Your Local Journal

Mayor Hans Gruenwald Jr. presented his report on Rigaud’s financial situation at the regular council meeting held Monday, November 14. The report covers the budget for the year ending December 31, 2015.

According to the report, there was a surplus of $850,662 indicating that spending was less than the forecasted budget of $11,680,257 for 2015. The total accumulated budget surplus is $2,180,680 compared to a total debt of $10,509,418 including the financing expenses for the long-term debt. The details of the mayor’s financial report will be published in the December 2016 edition of the municipal bulletin.

A list of contracts exceeding $25,000 for the same period was also deposited including the contracts for the construction of the Écocentre, fire station and town hall.

The mayor also reported that simultaneous translation of town council meetings from French to English would cost $2000 to $2500 per meeting depending upon the length of a session. “Considering that Rigaud does not have bilingual status and

the expense for the service, this is not something we will pursue,” said Gruenwald. The mayor said the town did the research in response to the request made by resident William Bradley at the Tuesday, October11 meeting.

Resident Jean-François Larin raised concerns about the wording of Article 22 of By-law 275-15-2016 that regulates the treatment and disposition of ash trees infected by the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) beetle. He pointed out that the wording was too general and appeared to imply that all property owners must treat every ash tree.

The article in question indicates that the owner of any ash tree is required to either cut down or treat the ash trees with specified products.

The mayor responded that the town was attempting to prevent the spread of the EAB infestation by responding to a situation that is continually changing.

Council agreed to add a note to the article of the by-law that every infested ash tree rather than every ash tree has to be treated or cut down and the Notice of Motion for By-Law 275-15-2016 proceeded.

Skating on Rigaud River, weather conditions permitting, will be avail-

able for the 2016-2017 season as council awarded a contract to Hydro Météo Inc. for the development and maintenance of a skating rink.

District 2 Councillor Archie Martin announced that the project to replace the washed out culvert on chemin Saint-Georges has received approval from the Quebec government. According to Martin, work on the culvert is expected to begin within 10 days.

In upcoming town business, the mayor announced a special council meeting to be held Monday, November 21, at 6 p.m. in the Salle de l’Amité, Édifice Paul–Brasseur, 10 rue SaintJean-Baptiste East to vote on three requests for minor derogations.

During the course of the meeting, a resident pointed out that each resolu-

tion in the agenda for the meeting is followed by the phrase “unanimously adopted,” as if the adoption of a resolution were a foregone conclusion. He also noted that there was rarely any discussion amongst councilors during the meeting concerning the resolutions. The agenda is projected on a screen for the duration of the meeting and digital copies are available on the town website in advance of the meeting.

The mayor responded that resolutions are discussed before the actual meeting and that each councillor is responsible for reading each resolution.

The Town Clerk added that if council did not approve a resolution, it would appear in the minutes of the meeting.

Yadda, yadda, yadda A few years ago, while working for a publishing outlet that had a number of French and English community newspapers under its banner, I sat next to a francophone journalist and we would regularly pepper each other with questions about the foibles of our respective native tongues.

He was a harsh critic with exacting standards but I trusted him to review my written French as I knew he wouldn’t laugh, but patiently correct it.

In turn, I was happy to answer his questions – to the best of my abilities – on the idiosyncrasies of the English language.

We regularly worked in conjunction on story translations and I liked to think we were each masters of our linguistic domains until one day he asked me, “C’est quoi un ‘muckety-muck’?”

It was right around the time that Canadian diplomat Robert Fowler had released a book chronicling his ordeal after being kidnapped by al Qaeda and held in the Sahara Desert for 130 days. In trying to determine details of her husband’s release, Fowler’s wife was reportedly told by a senior RCMP officer, “As long as I am in charge of this investigation not one cent will be paid for the release of these high muckety-mucks.”

It’s not so much that I was stumped for a definition as I was somewhat embarrassed by the silly-sounding phrase and had a hard time explaining its meaning and origin. Okay, in all honesty, I had to google it. A derivative from the term ‘mucka-muck’ of Chinook Jargon origin, a pidgin trade language of the Pacific northwest, it’s borne of a dialect composed of elements of Chinook, Nootka, English, French, meaning roughly a ‘person of authority’ and meriting more respect and explanation than I could provide.

This led to discussion and speculation on a number of terms known as reduplicatives – a linguistic quirk inherent to many languages including Turkish, Finnish, Hungarian, Japanese, English… but not so much in French unless you include given names like Loulou for Louise and Dédé for André.

My colleague was intrigued enough to ask me about others and for the next five months, we kept a list going of all the English reduplicatives that popped up in every day conversation.

Though most are fairly obvious and self-explanatory – boohoo and easy-peasy – others seem to defy logical etymological explanation. While we know that hurly-burly, topsy-turvy, and willy-nilly all mean a general state of disorganization and confusion, their origins are traced back either to other languages (hurreln in vernacular Low German); obsolete English (terve meaning overturn) and antiquated expressions (will I, nill I).

Most children’s first words are reduplicatives borne of babbling in an attempt to imitate adult sounds, hence mama, dada, etc. Except for my kids – the eldest’s first word was the dog’s name and the youngest’s was his brother’s name. Only my middle son noticed me first and it was with a perfect “Mommee.”

It was inevitable that with the pitter-patter of little feet, our vocabularies took on terms like choo-choo, boo-boo, and itsybitsy and matured through Rolie Polie Olie and Yabba Dabba Doo. I neglected to consider, however, that the list would eventually grow to include the likes of Helter-Skelter, Kill Bill, and Balls to the Wall.

Pincourt could be in the midst of a modest commercial development revival after two large banners were spotted hanging on the sides of the Faubourg de L’Île shopping mall facing Boulevard Cardinal-Léger and Highway 20 announcing the eventual arrival of a new cinema complex.

The news was confirmed by Your Local Journal during a telephone interview Tuesday afternoon with Groupe Quint President Ian Quint, the owner of the Faubourg de L’Île, which is working in partnership with Le Groupe Maga. The planned 12-screen theatre will be a part of the Cinémas Guzzo chain and will feature both English and French language movies.

Quint said this will be the first movie theatre that has been built in the area within the past 10 years. Construction is set to begin in the summer of 2017, although Quint said there is no current timeframe as to when it will be completed because the planning is still in the preliminary phase.

tract more auxiliary tenants – from boutiques and restaurants - that will eventually set up shop in the mall.

Richard Dubois, Director of Urban Planning had no immediate comment about the proposed cinema saying the town still hasn’t received complete details about the full scope of the project.

The announcement is good news for Pincourt which has been trying to revitalize the Faubourg with its current and previous owners. Groupe Quint purchased the mall in January. While there is some commercial activity, at least 20 store fronts are unoccupied.

The lack of commerce at the mall has resulted in a loss of about $1 million in tax revenue over a three-year period from 2013 to 2015 because of the reduction in tenants. An additional $1 million could be lost over the next three years if the vacancy rate isn’t lowered, said Town Manager Michel Perrier during an interview in July, 2015.

Consequently, the Financial Statements show a $1,089,833 consolidated operating surplus for the 2015 fiscal year. A significant portion of this surplus comes from revenues that were higher than anticipated, specifically taxes on property transfers and permits, grants provided by different governments and interest. The other part is due primarily to savings in remuneration, long-term debt interest and investment activities.

As of December 31, 2015, the non-allocated operating accumulated deficit was ($134,312) and the allocated portion was $1,648,338. The Town also had an amount of $2,345,889 in its reserve fund, including $764,053 for its working capital fund.

As of December 31, 2015, the Town’s long-term debt stood at $28,762,654. Of this amount, 23% ($6,580,200) will be reimbursed through subsidies from the Québec Government, 51% ($14,809,229) will be paid by the tax payers and 26% ($7,550,900) represents the sector debts borne by a portion of taxpayers.

2015 Independent Auditor’s Report

On September 21, 2016, Chartered Accountants Goudreau Poirier Inc. have signed their audit report.

After their verification in accordance with accounting standards generally accepted in Canada, they stated that, in their view: “ Given the serious lack of internal financial control for the years 2004 to 2013, the Consolidated Financial Statements do not accurately reflect the Town of Hudson’s financial position as well as the results of their operations, changes in their net financial assets (net debt) and Cash Flow at year end in accordance with the Canadian Public Sector Accounting Standards.”

It is therefore the Town’s intention to follow the recommendations made by Chartered Accountants Goudreau Poirier Inc. to improve the situation.

2016-2017-2018 Three-year Capital Expenditure Program

The last three-year capital expenditure program adopted by Council at the December 15, 2015 Special Meeting indicated investment activities totalling $18,765,006 which include $6,967,000 in grants and $4,304,706 which include grants of $1,628,000 for 2016.

To account for these investments, various funding sources were planned for the Capital Expenditure Program: long-term loans, government subsidies, working capital and operating budget.

Assuming that no unexpected major event will occur before the end of the current financial year, we expect a positive result for 2016. The scope of these positive results depends on the revenue generated through the Surplus and Gas Tax from Transport Soleil and from the interest and penalties collected on tax arrears.

General orientations of the 2017 budget and the next three-year capital expenditure program

The 2017 budget process is currently underway in collaboration with the Town’s administrative team. One of our main concerns is to continue to better serve our Citizens. Our first priority will be to provide a reliable network of roads, public safety and health services.

Council wants Hudson to be recognized as an enviable place to reside and a charming and pleasant Town to visit. We want to offer people a celebration of Arts and Culture as well as an original shopping experience. While achieving its objectives, Council must ensure the respect of the environment and promote harmonious development projects.

We will continue to hold popular events and gatherings enjoyed by our Community’s families and residents of all ages, notably Winter Fest, the Hudson Music Festival, the Hudson Street Fair, the Santa Claus parade, the Festival of Lights, the Halloween Party, Canada Day, to name but a few. · Improving municipal infrastructure with adequate infrastructure is another of our objectives. We will continue our annual projects such as the rehabilitation of roads, improvement of sports facilities and infrastructure available in many Town parks, bike paths and hiking trails.

In October 2016, we had the honor to invite our Citizens to an open house at our new dog park so they could appreciate the work that was done. Further improvements will be made to the infrastructures of the bird sanctuary and nature reserve.

Hudson’s town center is constantly evolving. We have witnessed the ongoing changes that come with the arrival of new shops and businesses. Revitalizing the center of Town continues to be a priority.

MARANDA WRITES VINCENT MARANDA

Breaking up is easy for many service contracts Q. I have a written contract with a local computer firm in force until 2018 to service computers in my business. Our representative is incompetent. How can I get out of this contract?

A. If your contract qualifies, you can send a termination notice right now. You don’t even have to talk about incompetence. Generally speaking one can unilaterally terminate a service contract (subject to the important conditions below) based on Section 2125 of the civil code: “The client may unilaterally resiliate the contract even though the work or provision of service is already in progress.”

Subject to certain conditions that are often easy to meet, as hard as it is to believe, you can actually terminate, at will, service contracts even if the contract states a fixed term. You don’t even have to give a reason.

Before terminating your contract you have to understand the following points.

This right of termination is limited by Section 2129 where you must pay at least for the work performed to date. “… in proportion to the agreed price, the actual costs and expenses, the value of the work performed before the end of the contract... each party is liable for any other injury that the other party may have suffered.”

These are the major tenets to consider before terminating your contract. Since the effects can be drastic, service providers have fought in court over the interpretation to give to these two sections.

In general, the courts have decided that: One can avoid, as a service provider, the application of s. 2125, if one writes in the contract, (it’s important to be very clear and write it), that the parties exclude the application of s. 2125. This has been confirmed in court, time after time.

The word injury in s. 2129 does not include loss of profits. Courts are consistent on this too.

It is possible for a service provider to include penalty clauses in the contract that could apply in the case of premature termination but if they are abusive, their amounts will be reduced by the courts.

You also have to make sure Quebec law applies. No problem if the contract was signed by both parties in Quebec and the contract does not state that the laws of Ontario or somewhere else apply.

Your right to terminate must not be abusive. Don’t terminate a contract in bad faith seeking to just cause harm – you could be exposed to punitive damages.

Here is an illustration of how the Quebec Court of Appeal recently dealt with this subject. Bell would not accept that people who sign 2-3 year contracts could terminate their service contract anytime and not have to pay the amounts of contractual penalty clauses for early termination. The court however decided that Bell had not expressly excluded s. 2125 and the termination was valid. Just because the contract had a penalty or provided for a fixed term does not amount to taking away the right to terminate under s. 2125. Bell also argued unsuccessfully that the word injury in s. 2129 meant being compensated for anticipated profits. The court found that anticipated profits are not included in the word injury. The Bell penalty clauses could have been valid but in the Bell case the penalty was judged abusive and reduced, not reflecting an accurate measure of the true damages for Bell.

Each case must be evaluated in light of particular facts and any signed contract with your service provider. These general rules are nice to know but it is better to obtain legal advice to make sure all bases are covered before terminating service contracts.

Schiefke said there are up to 600 abandoned ships across Canadian waterways. “This is a huge issue, both from an environmental and a financial standpoint,” said Schiefke.

The plan prohibits owners from abandoning their vessels and makes

owners liable and responsible for any clean-up costs as the result of abandonment. “It empowers the Government of Canada to take more proactive action on vessels causing hazards before they become too costly to address,” Schiefke said of the current model that has seen owners opt for bankruptcy as a cheaper alternative to ship repair and maintenance costs. The plan also aims to determine who the actual owner of a vessel is and to log all outstanding repair and safety issues.

The Ocean Protection Plan is expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2017.

PARRYWINKLE JAMES PARRY Just read about a tremendously successful gala of the Procrastinators Club in Ontario that last week celebrated its PHOTO BY 20th Anniversary.

MAURICE JEFFERIES The reason for its success? Evidently nobody showed up for the dinner and distinguished guest speaker. Not that they had booked a hall, speaker, or menu or anything. The organizers apparently being simply too busy with other more important things - such as following the TrumpClinton debacle on CNN albeit with a subsequent smooth transition - to get around to it.

Not that that should come as any great surprise, I hasten to add. For no club member has ever shown up at a meeting over the past two decades.

Which explains why the original minutes have never been formally seconded and approved.

Now that, dear readers, is true procrastination. And a club that I think would be more than pleased to have me as a member!

--------------SQUIRREL SYNDROME - You see, for the past few years, I have been putting off having my eyes tested. My distant vision is perfect. But ever since my arms got too short for me to read small print clearly, I have been buying OTC (Over The Counter) glasses for a couple of bucks a pair. The strength having gone up from 1.5 to 2.5. I have them all over the place in the house, but somehow can never find a pair when I need them.

For despite the protestations of my beautiful Sunshine - who once a week at least will spread them around so as to be readily available wherever I am likely to need them - they always seem to end up in a big pile in one specific spot. Call it the Squirrel Syndrome.

And I know that I am not alone in this particular trait among OTC wearers.

For months now, Mireille has also

been bugging me to have my eyes professionally tested. But I procrastinated.

Telling myself that heck, I don’t need prescription glasses. I just need to increase the strength of those I already buy and can afford to break or lose.

Providing, of course, that I can find them in the first place!

And so it was this week that, albeit reluctantly, I agreed to visit her friend and long-time optician, Magda Taraboulsy. And guess what? Learned after an hour-long consultation with an optometrist that I do indeed need prescription glasses for reading and working on the ‘puter. My right eye not having the same strength as my left. Or was it the other way around? And that by wearing OTCs - known to one and all as dollar store glasses - I was only weakening them both.

Sheesh. Mireille had been right all along. Go figure!

Suffice to say that I then had to select a pair of frames. A real dilemma for a procrastinator such as myself. Crikey mick, I thought. Do I go with the oval, rectangular, big square, or round?

I finally opted for a brown-framed roundish lens. Giving me a kind of distinguished owlish-John Lennonprofessorial type look. Or so I was told.

At least it’s different to that of my longtime so-called lookalike, Willy Nelson.

Ah, in the words of the Scottish Bard Robbie Burns in his poem, To a Louse, ‘O would some power the gift to give us to see ourselves as others see us.’

Campeau. All boutique volunteers on a regular basis, and sporting donated clothing and accessories available six days a week at the boutique at 455 Main Road - which opened in May 2009 - and at simply unbeatable prices.

The most expensive item on the ‘runway,’ for example, was an impeccable Escada women’s suit priced at $75. Regular retail price? Well over $1,000. Donated handbags from internationally-acclaimed designers and houses including Jimmy Choo, Prada, Burberry, and Coach were going for a song. Plus designer real silk scarves, priced retail up to $300 that went for $20 each.

I had to laugh when Roland asked all the ladies present and who came from throughout the region how many were actually wearing outfits bought at the boutique and over half of them put up their hands. Also later, when I learned from boutique president, Janet Ellerbeck, that several had actually bought back items they had previously donated because they looked so good on the models!

Perhaps next year, however, a men’s segment in the show with volunteers strutting their stuff on the runway?

Could be fun and after all, as a regular shopper there, I know you have a terrific ever-changing haberdashery department for us males. Just a thought ladies. And a big bravo to one and all!

ing anyway - still trying to get my head around the fact that Christmas is now just five or so weeks away and that the ladies of St. Mary’s Sewing Circle are all set for their annual Christmas Bazaar this Saturday, November 19 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Parish Hall, 261 Main Road, in Como.

In addition to sewing articles that make for great gifts, there will also be their famous chicken pot pies which always sell out fast, as well as homebaked goods, plants, arts and crafts, ‘attic treasures,’ and a whole bunch of stuff at unbeatable prices. Ho, ho, ho!

--------------PEAS PLEASE - In closing, just learned from YLJ wagster, Jane Kirkwood, that an 80-year-old lady wearing a chic Chanel ensemble was recently arrested for shoplifting in Vancouver. And that when she went before the judge, he asked her. “What did you steal?” She replied, “A can of peaches.”

The judge then asked her how many peaches were in the can. Six, she replied. The judge then said that he would give her six days in jail. At which point, and before said judge could actually pronounce sentence, the woman’s husband spoke up and asked if he could say something. The judge said, “What is it?” Said the husband, “She also stole a big can of peas!”

With news reports of more Canadians turning to food banks than ever, there’s no question many are going through difficult times.

The non-profit Centre d’action bénévole (CAB) L’Actuel wants to make the holidays just a little brighter for families living in Vaudreuil-Soulanges

CAB L’Actuel is asking the Vaudreuil-Soulanges community to help make the holidays joyful for the region’s families in difficulty by either sponsoring a family or donating a brand new toy. If you want to participate or would like more information, phone the CAB L’Actuel before December 11.

who are having a hard time. For the past 10 years it’s called on the community to help its neighbours by sponsoring needy families and for 15 years it has held an annual toy drive for new children’s toys.

“Seeing your family, exchanging gifts, it’s as much fun for the parents as for the kids who usually share a meal and there’s lots of joy and emotions,” said Serge Langlois, who handles communications and marketing for CAB L’Actuel. “But for many families their reality is different from what we expect the holidays to be. And that’s why we’re looking for families to sponsor someone from their community a little more in need.”

Sponsoring a family is as simple as donating food, a gift card or a gift certificate to a grocery store, a new toy, a gift or a gift card for a recreational outing.

Families in difficulty register with the CAB L’Actuel and it’s possible for sponsoring families to learn a bit about the family they’re paired with, “like there’s a boy and a little girl or if it’s a single mother,” Langlois said.

At the same time, “We try to keep it really anonymous so no one feels bad about their situation,” he said. To avoid any awkwardness for recipients, the sponsoring family never meets the

family they’re helping. Instead families in need will come by CAB L’Actuel to pick up their gifts.

Sponsors are welcome to send a well-wishing message to the families they’re paired with. If the sponsoring family is Anglophone and wants to send a message but the receiving family only understands French, CAB L’Actuel will help, Langlois said. “That could be cool, to make the community stronger,” he said. “If an English family is giving to a French family and a French family is giving to an English family, that could be interesting also.”

Messages need to be anonymous, Langlois said. “You can’t have any names or anything like that.”

If you’re interested in becoming a sponsor, please register with CAB L’Actuel by December 11.

Another way to help is by dropping off a new, unwrapped toy for a family in need to CAB L’Actuel’s office by December 11. The toys will be given out at a special distribution day event on December 13.

Toys can be anything, even a tricycle, and there are no restrictions on what can be donated. “We’ll accept anything,” said Langlois. “It’s to make sure the kids have something new to open during the holidays.”

Lorne Elliott stars in and stages The Fixer-Upper at Grove Hall in Huntingdon With a funny, brash, and cheeky Maritimes twist November 24-26 James Parry Your Local Journal

Hudson’s comic master of mirth and mayhem, Lorne Elliott, makes no secret of the fact that he just loves Prince Edward Island, spending time there every year, when his busy cross-Canada schedule permits, relaxing, writing and creating.

However, not likely he would ever stay at the ramshackle cottage being renovated and fixed up by Bruno MacIntyre, with the ‘help’ of his clever, but caustic Aunt Tillie for rental in Savage Bay on the south shore of PEI. Sounds like a real fixer-upper tourist trap!

Which is exactly what it is, funnily enough. As penned by Elliott in his critically-acclaimed comedy, The Fixer-Upper - the novella adaptation of his play, Tourist Trap, first produced in 2000 - which is being staged in Huntingdon, Quebec, with three performances at Grove Hall, November 24-26, at 7 p.m.

Playing Bruno, opposite Hudson’s Karen Cromar in the role of Aunt Tillie, Elliott’s hapless character who wants to take charge of his

own life sure has his work cut out for him. First, the cottage, inherited with a bad reputation from Bruno’s ne’er-do-well father, must be renovated. Then, Bruno must duel with his aunt’s wry insults and sly plans, a sardonic would-be author, and two torrid tenants.

In this comedy in seven phone calls, Elliott’s celebrated gifts for sharp-witted repartee and vivid characterizations are in full force.

So, too, are his keen eye and ear for our fumbling aspirations, bittersweet bantering, self-deception, hard-won wisdom, surprising tenderness, and zany outcomes. In other words, classic Lorne Elliott with a funny, brash, and cheeky Maritimes twist.

Just like the so called transition period on the political scene currently in the news south of the borPHOTO BY GREG JONES der, here we are in our neck of the woods busily transitioning our gardens before the first snow falls, deep frost hits, and the ground freezes.

I must say that so far, apart from the rain, we have been blessed with great weather for putting our gardens to bed.

If only my neighbours’ leaves would stop blowing over onto mine. Nah, I’m only kidding. For mine are surely blowing onto theirs. And it all evens out in the end. And those that I don’t mulch with the lawnmower all end up on my compost pile anyway.

Except for some that I am saving to protect my Roses. With varying degrees of success over the years, I must admit.

Some years, great; others, not so good.

In fact, like many other gardeners, I am coming to regard roses - with the exception of hardy shrub roses such as Native or Rugosas or those from the David Austen and Explorer series - as annuals.

For every spring I find that some I bought years ago have not only survived but are already budding and thriving.

Others, while given the same protection and tender loving care, are doing diddly squat and are destined to be dug up and transplanted in a less conspicuous spot in the veggie garden to be, hopefully, nursed back to health.

So how do I go about protecting my more tender Hybrids, Floribundas and Grandifloras as best I can? I first cut the canes right back and then, when the ground is frozen and not before, cover

each crown with a mound of soil, compost, mulch, or leaves, and then lightly compress it all down. Why, in previous years I’ve even experimented with recycled pages from Your Local Journal ripped into strips and I would like to tell you that was the best cover ever. But I can’t. For again, it was an obvious case of hit and miss!

Once that is done, I cover the plants with Styrofoam cones that I have had for years, with a little pierced air-hole on all four sides to allow for air circulation, and place a brick or stone on top to stop it from blowing away, and that’s it folks. Then you just sit back knowing you have done all you can to save them.

And hope for the best!

Then come spring, when the ground begins to thaw and not before, gently start removing the soil or whatever protection you have laid down over the base of the plant. Don’t start too early, however, as a sudden cold snap can be a killer.

Royal LePage’s annual Fireman’s Christmas Charity auction returns Lauren Mitchell Special contributor

It’s getting close to that time of year again where families celebrate Christmas and sit around the table with a large feast. At least, that’s the idealized version of the holiday but some families don’t get this experience since they don’t have the means to carry out this tradition. One year short of a 40th anniversary, Royal LePage Village real

estate agency and firefighters of surrounding towns are teaming up again this year to bring back the annual Christmas Charity Auction in which all funds collected go towards Le Pont/ Bridging food bank to make Christmas food baskets for families in need.

This year’s auction will fall on a Monday night, November 28, at the Hudson Village Theatre, 28 Wharf Road. A preview will begin at 6:30 p.m. where you can scout the goods and the

bidding begins at 7 p.m. The location has been the same for the past 39 years and The Lawrence Family Auctioneers and Robin Pridham of Pridham’s Auction House will be animating the event.

The auction has been a long standing tradition for Royal LePage, the towns’ firefighters and Le Pont/Bridging as they have come together for almost four decades in order to collect donations to purchase and distribute food baskets in the towns of St. Lazare, Rigaud, Vaudreuil-Dorion and Hud-

son for those who are in need.

Every year, you can expect to see auction items that have been donated by local businesses, merchants, residents, and even items from the real estate brokers themselves. The auction will include golf packages, home-made food, paintings, toys and also hand-painted furniture. And of course, in keeping with tradition, local firefighters will be auctioned off for a four-hour time limit in which you can ask them to do whatever you please – as long as it’s legal.

In a world dotted with handheld electronic communication devices virtually always within reach as we bask in the blue glow of our small screens, a refreshing communication quirk still exists once a month where poets, story-tellers, and word lovers get together for a face-to-face bilingual evening of literary interchange.

On the first Thursday of the month, a small crowd gathers at Kaffecino, a coffee shop in the Fauburg de l’Île Shopping Plaza in Pincourt, complete with paper notebooks, pens, and ideas, fueled by coffee, tea, and a love of words.

On a recent visit, participant topics included an ode to woodworking, reflections on a trip to Hungary, an exploration of democracy, and an amusing take on the intricacies of communication in our digitized world. Continued from page 6 Despite the loss of tax revenue from the Faubourg, the town’s commercial tax stream has been augmented by a commercial revival on Boulevard du Traversier in the past two years with the opening of two major hardware chains and a bank located within a small satellite shopping area.

Last week, the wooded lot at the southeast corner of Cardinal-Léger

and du Traversier across the street from the Faubourg was clear cut to make way for a new chicken rotisserie restaurant, said Dubois.

“We basically gave the first permit which is the preparation of the site itself,” Dubois said. “We have the plans and everything else for the construction of the building but the permit has not been issued yet. We’re still verifying details. We suppose it will be open within 2017 but we don’t have any dates yet.”

HUDSON The Hudson Christmas Craft Show takes place November 26 and 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Centre Communautaire Stephen F. Shaar, 394 Main Road.

This fundraiser will be for the Westwood Senior High School IDP (International Development Project in Honduras).

There will be 25 different vendors, live music from 12 to 1 p.m. both days, customer appreciation raffle, regular raffles, and café with light lunch. Free admission. All are welcome.

Hudson Artists will be sponsoring a free Open Art Studio Wednesday, November 23, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Stephen F. Shaar Community Centre, Youth Centre Room, 394 Main Road.

Peacefully on Thursday, November 10th, in her 78th year in Ormstown, Quebec. Predeceased by her husband of 54 years Robert, she leaves to mourn her children Lesley (Peter), Aileen (Steve) and David (Diane).

She also leaves behind her many loving grandchildren Tanya, Alex, Steven, Scott, Andrea, Kristina, Ryan, Michael and Jennifer as well as her great grandchildren Payton, Sarah, Brooke, Ethan, Elisabeth, Victoria and Edward.

A long time resident of Hudson, she was devoted to her family and her many friends. She was an avid curler, and gardener, was generous with her time, and always ready to offer a cup of tea or a wee drink. She will be greatly missed.

A special thank you to the kind and caring team at the Centre d’Hébergement Ormstown who made “Mum’s” last years the best they could be.

The family will hold a private service at a later date. Donations in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.

Dennis Gobeil - part of the heart of Hudson James Armstrong Your Local journal

The sudden and unexpected death of Dennis Gobeil on Wednesday, November 2, shocked many residents of Hudson and the surrounding area.

Gobeil, a prominent community and business leader, collapsed and died while curling with friends at the Whitlock Curling Club.

Gobeil supported a wide variety of community events and activities including the Hudson Music Festival and was an active member of Whitlock Golf and Curling Club and Hudson Yacht Club. He was also involved in the Hudson Town Planning and Advisory Council and volunteered as a soccer coach.

Although he was an avid golfer, the sport he loved the most was scuba diving. “He was always looking for an excuse to go south and scuba dive,” said daughter Laura Gobeil in a recent interview.

An astute and highly respected businessperson and Chartered Professional Accountant, Dennis Gobeil developed a thriving accounting and financial services practice currently located in the offices above the Hudson Mews on Main Road.

Moving forward, his wife, Nancy Stephens, his brother, Christopher Gobeil and son-in-law Trevor Dickison want the community to know that the established business will continue.

“We will continue to provide the same services that were provided by his company,” said Christopher Gobeil.

This week in Sports Sweepings Maxine Perra Special contributor

Curling is full steam ahead at Whitlock Golf and Country Club. All draws have commenced and the volunteer committees need to be congratulated on a job well done.

The Ladies Curling Association held their first competition of the year October 31 at the Pointe Claire Curling Club. The St. George is a competition for those players who are not rated as Skip; Whitlock entered with the Team of Ingrid Thunem - Skip, Sylvia Mauri - Third, Suzanne Sonnel - Second and Brigitte Blais - Lead. Team Thunem, who won both morning and afternoon games, was victorious and received a lovely pin.

In the spring at the Awards Luncheon, the team will be presented with the lovely silver tea service. Congratulations ladies!

Our All-Star competition is well underway and Whitlock has four teams competing this year. This league will wrap up at the end of November.

The Centennial-Mary McGuire

was played at the Town of Mont Royal Curling Club November 7. This competition is for players over the age of 55. Whitlock’s teams were as follows: Team #1- Barbara Olejnik - Skip, Diane Gignac - Third, Mary Whittall - Second, and Maria Geiring - Lead.

Team #2 - Marilyn Cummings - Skip, Lynne Dumaine - Third, Nancy Lucas Second, and Louise Aiken -Lead. Team #3 - Maxine Perra - Skip, Inga Lawson - Third, Sylvia Patrick - Second, and Pat Patterson - Lead.

Team Cummings and Team Perra made it to the District Finals, Marilyn in the Centennial and Maxine in the Mary McGuire. The Championship final saw Marilyn Cummings and her tour de force become runners-up in the Centennial after a very exciting game.

Team Perra came away with the Mary McGuire event. Whitlock is getting ready to host the annual Tobin Earle competition which is for players with five years or less curling experience. This brings out the best in all and the games are very exciting.

We encourage all to come and cheer on both Whitlock teams Tuesday, December 6. There’s lots more curling before the holiday break.

The John Abbott College Islanders men’s rugby team triumphed after playing host to Dawson College last Sunday, November 13, for the CEGEP Rugby Cup. In the first half, with a strong wind blowing, Captain David Pelosi led from the front and scored the game’s opening try. Mitchell Khury scored an unconverted try right before half time as well, making the score 12-0 for Abbott at the half.

The second half opened with assistant captain and fly-half Sam Montminy kicking a penalty to go up 15-0, despite
