Senneville announces drainage infrastructure overhaul and new town hall registry signing John Jantak Your Local Journal

Senneville is set to embark on a major $6.5 million project to improve the drainage situation throughout the village as part of a major infrastructure enhancement program that was announced at the Tuesday evening council meeting on May 24.

A small portion of the cost – $600,000 – has already been covered through a subsidy from the provincial gas tax program and the village is hopeful it can receive an additional provincial grant of just under $3 million that would halve the cost of the project and lessen the burden on taxpayers, said Mayor Jane Guest.

Most of the work is expected to be done in 2017 although other aspects of the project will extend into 2020, said Guest. She added that because of Senneville’s unique topography, a global solution regarding drainage is not practical and that different areas will require specific work.

The tax burden for drainage upgrade will be shared equally by all residents because it’s a project that will benefit the whole community, said Guest.

“It’s something that’s been plaguing Senneville for a long time and we just can’t let it go anymore,” Guest told Your local Journal. “We have to deal with it.

Unfortunately, it’s a very expensive project but the longer you leave it the more expensive it becomes.

“It’s been looked at by council and determined this is the route that we need to take” Guest added. “The alternative of waiting and doing nothing would be far too costly. If this raises eyebrows, certainly the alternative would really be an issue. It’s something that’s going to take some getting used to. It will change the appearance of Senneville. There will be challenges for sure.”

Information detailing the type of work that will be undertaken throughout the various parts of Senneville will soon be available on the village’s website, said Guest.

A registry signing will be held in Senneville on June 1st for the new town hall after council adopted a $1.8 million loan by-law for the project and Mayor Jane Guest said the $6.5 million earmarked to overhaul a large portion of the village’s water drainage system is needed to resolve longstanding issues regarding water flow and standing water.

New city hall registry signing Senneville residents will have the opportunity to sign a register at town hall on Tuesday, June 1, if they oppose plans by the village to build a new town hall after council adopted a $1.8 million loan by-law that will allow the project to proceed if there is no opposition.

A total of 82 signatures are required for the village to hold a referendum that would determine whether the project will go ahead or not. If the required number of signatures is not reached, the village will be able to proceed with the project.

“Hopefully it will go through because it’s badly needed. The current building doesn’t serve our purpose anymore. We have seven administrative employees in the building right now who are kind of fighting for space.

It just doesn’t have the necessary room to accommodate the workflow.

It doesn’t even have a mayor’s office,” said Guest who works from a home office.

“I think Senneville deserves a nicer building and unfortunately the existing building has issues that make it too expensive and impractical to keep up with renovations. It’s better to start from scratch,” Guest added.

The village had originally allocated a total of $2.5 million for the new town hall and to renovate its municipal garage, but will use $760,000 from its surplus fund to cover part of the cost for both projects.

Life in the Past Lane…

Scouting about From well before the age that kids can talk, their job is to absorb all that goes on around them and to learn by patterning the actions of the mature responsible adults in their lives. Like the very ones who drafted up the inspirational poster full of quotes on lessons imparted in kindergarten extolling the virtues of playing fair, not taking things that aren’t yours, and - written all in caps - cleaning up your own mess.

And it’s thanks to the grownups who paid attention in kindergarten and took the message to heart, carried it to adulthood, and are passing it down to the next generation that not only are our landscapes a little cleaner, kids are the ones actively involved in cleaning it up. (See story on page 18).

What the Cavagnal Scouts managed to amass in their recent shoreline clean-up – including bottle caps and cigarette butts – likely wasn’t left there by their classmates but rather by those old enough to be legally smoking and drinking. Namely, the adults.

Many teachings in life, though duly learnt, have a tendency to wane and fade but if we’re lucky enough, we’ll have a group of kids around to remind us how enduring the lessons still are.

We can thank the kids, and their positive role-models, for taking the time to apply what they’ve learnt.

Dear Editor: editor@yourlocaljournal.ca Dear Editor, What happened last week in parliament is unacceptable. No, I am not referring to the infamous elbow. There has been enough ink spilled on that.

Rather I am referring to what happened last Monday morning. There was a vote on bill C-10: the act to amend the 1988 Air Canada Public Participation act. Twenty-five per cent of the Liberal caucus (that’s 45 people) and 50 per cent of the Bloc caucus (that’s five people) did not show up for work on Monday and the Liberal government almost lost the vote on their own bill. If the bill had failed it would have suited me fine.

The 1988 act protects Canadian Maintenance centres in Montreal, Mississauga and Winnipeg.

It means that Air Canada needs to keep its heavy maintenance in those cities. It protects well-paying Canadian jobs. Air Canada’s executives would rather do the maintenance in El Salvador. I’m not sure about you but when it comes to upkeep of the air fleet, I would feel safer if it was done in Canada.

We have former technicians that worked in those maintenance centres in our region. It’s disappointing that so many of our MPs, including our own, opted not to vote on the issue.

Jamie Nicholls Hudson Dear Editor, To the current administration of the Town of Hudson - disregard everything in the “Strategic Plan” until you fix the roads!

Right now there is no single more important issue. Our roads are pathetic and dangerous – especially for cyclists. On that subject, cyclists have one paved shoulder the town likes to call a bike path (the strip that runs up Cameron, and that is a joke since a line hasn’t been painted to delineate it in years). Riding down Main Road would be a delightful experience for cyclists from both Rigaud and Vaudreuil - if it was safe. But because there are no paved shoulders, cars speed into the opposite lane to drive widely around cyclists right into oncoming traffic (yes – I have witnessed this first-hand many, many times).

The road is so bad, you cannot cycle near the edge because it is full of deep crevices, broken asphalt, and very low dirt or gravel shoulders.

And that’s just Main Road; have you been down Fairhaven Street lately? The roads throughout the neighbourhood are just as bad, if not worse, and

haven’t been maintained for years.

This is the town’s next lawsuit should someone have a serious accident due to years of wilful neglect.

And while we’re on the subject of roads, one heavy truck does as much damage to roads as 10,000 cars. The town should reassess the size of the garbage and recycling vehicles that circulate throughout Hudson. These huge trucks damage the road surface, they crush the road edge, and they drive off the road onto lawns causing more damage and work for residents.

Finally, if there is any money left over after rebuilding our roads, do something else to shore up our infrastructure: the drinking water, the sewers, and maybe Pine Lake. We don’t need anything fancy until the bones of this broken town have been fixed.

Anything else is like putting lipstick on a pig.

Our roads are horrible, dangerous, and embarrassing.

Could this be the town’s new motto: Decaying, Decrepit, Corrupt?

Lynn Weber Hudson Dear Editor, Many thanks to Eric Holm who expressed very clearly what a lot of St. Lazare citizens are thinking (Your Local Journal, May 19, page 4). The mayor has been accumulating unpopular decisions on the way he his spending our money. The famous stunt he pulled on the registry of signature against the expense of $10 million for a new city hall was an insult to every citizen. If he would have installed as many signs for this issue that he did for the leaf pick-up, this irresponsible project would not be on the city files.

To add to the insult is his new brilliant solution of charging $25 for leaf pick-up when we already had this service in our taxes for the last 22 years, if memory serves.

I certainly don’t understand cutting services that are needed in our area given the large amount of trees in the various sectors.

I am totally with you Mr. Holm; I just can’t wait to put this pathetic administration out of the $10 million castle when the next election time is here.

Six candidates competing for town council seat in Rigaud District 3 James Armstrong Your Local Journal

The up-coming by-election on Sunday, June 12, in the Town of Rigaud District 3 has sparked a six-way electoral competition. The election, necessitated by the March death of highly respected Councillor Michel Sauvé, has motivated six residents to step into the municipal political arena. A brief outline of the platform of each candidate follows.

William Bradley William Bradley, a long-time resident of Rigaud on Point Séguin, sees many important issues in the upcoming elec-

tion.

“There are a lot of reasons not to develop Rigaud Mountain,” said Bradley citing the difficulties of installing septic systems and wells for large-scale development. “I’ve heard there are issues with the levels of water in wells dropping on Saint-Georges,” he added.

For Bradley, there are also issues with potable water in the rest of the town, the lack of clear drinking water and the high levels of chlorination. He contends that leaking pipes in the town water system are the cause for drops in water pressure and said cross contamination from the sewage system also occurs.

As a resident of Point Séguin, Bradley has first-hand experience of the problems surrounding the neighborhood boat launch. “We end up with trucks and trailers parked along the road making it difficult to get in or out.” He said it creates a public security risk for emergency vehicles. “There’s very little policing of the situation,” he added.

Bradley is not a supporter of the new fire station, town hall and municipal garage projects because of the cost. According to his campaign literature, District 3 does not receive services equal to the amount of property taxes paid.

“We are subsidizing the central part of Rigaud… we are not getting potable water nor the same fire protection the town gets,” he states emphasizing police and fire costs are over $2 million per year and that many District 3 residents live beyond the radius of effective protection and services.

It is the only forested area in Vaudreuil-Soulanges and developing the space is very difficult.”

As co-owner of Del Fiacco Restaurant in the heart of town, she is aware of the need to repair and upgrade infrastructure. “A lot of people tell me the roads need to be taken care of,” said de Haerne noting many small roads appear to have been forgotten and others come under provincial jurisdiction. “Speed limits are such a big issue because they are not being observed.”

The motivation to get involved in municipal politics came from her involvement in local business affairs as president of the Business Association of Rigaud (AGAR) and participation on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of VaudreuilSoulanges. “It is time,” she said noting that it is also time for Rigaud to have a woman as a town councillor again.

“I see a lot of potential for Rigaud,” said de Haerne referring to its economic development and looks forward to the new town hall construction. “Bringing the town hall back to downtown is the best thing they could have done,” she said of its accessibility for citizens.

“We found a place next to Les Sentiers De L’Escapade on chemin Saint-Georges,” said Magnan where they proceeded to build a barn for their three horses.

Magnan is a supporter of protecting the mountain in conjunction with controlled planned development. “It (the

mountain) is a source of revenue for the town, but that’s not the only thing,” said Magnan. “I’m all for protecting the mountain but not at any cost.” As president of the equestrian club Monts et Vallons, Magnan says he found an opportunity to contribute to the community as a volunteer. “I’m not for big developments of 50 or 60 houses and cutting down all the trees without thinking about it,” he said.

“We have to protect the waterfront,” he noted in reference to the areas of District 3 along the Ottawa River. “The city needs a long-term plan to purchase waterfront property.”

With a 25-year career at Bombardier where he started as a mechanical designer and moved up the corporate ladder, Magnan said his administrative, planning and certification experience in the corporate world will have value in the civic milieu. Although this is his first run at municipal politics, he knows the value of being involved in the community. “This is my first time and as I am looking at retirement, this is an opportunity to give something back,” he added.

Yves Pelletier District 3 Candidate Yves Pelletier is well known in Rigaud for his in-

volvement as coordinator of the annual Senior Citizens Salon. “This year is the third edition,” he said with enthusiasm.

The rights of citizens, particularly senior citizens, have always been part of Pelletier’s life. Before retiring, he worked for 35 years as an ombudsman for the Québec Department of Justice at the Palais de Justice Montréal. More recently, he volunteers as the regional president for the Montérégie region of the Québec Retired Public and Para Public Workers and is first Vice President of the Round Table of Seniors in the Montérégie.

“I work for everyone – I have also worked to defend the rights of senior citizens,” adding one of the dossiers that concerns him is the recent loss of a doctor at the local medical clinic. “Perhaps there is a way for the town to collaborate with clinics to improve the situation – it is something really important,” said Pelletier.

“The preservation of Rigaud Mountain is essential,” he said. “I chose to live in Rigaud for the tranquility, the peace and quiet,” he added. “One day we will find that we no longer have the cachet of what Rigaud is.”

If elected, he said he’ll support controlled development of the mountain carefully and slowly in certain areas.

Festival Au Galop announces official program Brianna Ballard Special contributor

The program for the second annual edition of St. Lazare’s Festival Au Galop was officially announced last Thursday and this year’s equestrian event features both entertainment for the eyes and the ears.

Pamela Tremblay, District 2 councillor and president of Au Galop, said that several new events are taking place this year, including having two major attractions instead of one. Singer Ariane Moffatt will be joining the Knights of Valour, an extreme jousting group, as one of the main events performing on July 2.

“We are very lucky to have her,” said Tremblay, adding that the ticket sale proceeds from Moffatt’s show will go directly to support the Fondation Hôpital du Suroît, one of two organizations the festival is supporting this year. “Like last year, we’re supporting two local causes related to healthcare,” Tremblay said. The festival is also supporting the Centre équestre thérapeutique Marie-Laurence, a centre in Ste. Justine-de-Newton that offers therapeutic riding lessons for children with

mental or physical challenges. Donations will be collected by volunteers in the parking lots and stands of the venue throughout the weekend of the festival.

In addition to the two main events, the Festival Au Galop will have various activities and shows for the whole family, including carriage rides, dancing, country music, a horse-ball demonstration, medieval games on ponies and a mini equine museum, as well as a house and business decorating contest and much more. The activities will take place in the various zones of the festival, located on rue Poirier and in Bédard Park.

Michel Poirier, honorary chairman of the Festival Au Galop and owner of the St. Lazare IGA and the Auberge Willow, said he thinks the second edition of the festival will be, “a wonderful experience.” He added that horses have been a part of building our society from the ground up, and since St. Lazare is such a prominent equestrian community, the least the town can do is give horses their due respect.

“I think it’s a good idea to honour, to pay homage, to the horse,” he said. Poirier has been working with the com-

According to Tremblay, this year’s budget is set at approximately $300,000 and emphasized that the Town of St. Lazare is determined not to go over budget this year. Last fall, some residents were unhappy with the amount of money spent on the development of the festival, which ended up being over $550,000, even though the initial

budget was set at $180,000. Tremblay says that the budget set for this year is going to be strictly adhered to.

The festival will be taking place on Canada Day weekend on July 1, 2 and 3, at the equestrian centre built for last year’s festival. This year, the festival is being combined with the St. Lazare Canada Day festivities.

Visit to the Fleury Michon Company by newly arrived immigrants As part of the professional immigrant integration program, a dozen job seekers visited Fleury Michon onTuesday, May 17, to learn more about the different jobs offered by this company located in Rigaud.

The professional integration service enables immigrants to develop their employability so they can integrate and maintain steady work. Fifty Vaudreuil-Soulanges companies were met in 2014-2015 in order to promote

immigrant hiring.

One of the objectives of the visits is also to allow immigrants to see and to know the philosophy and values of a company in the province of Quebec.

Participants have the chance to make direct contact with the employer and ask questions about the process and the company’s hiring criteria. They can also submit their resume to the employer.

May 25 – National Missing Children’s Day Keeping hope alive for all missing children and their searching families On May 15, all across Canada, hundreds of children are remembered on National Missing Children’s Day. This special day serves as an annual reminder to renew its efforts in reuniting missing children with their families, honour those who are still missing, and make child safety a top priority.

Sadly, children continue to disappear and as we commemorate National Missing Children’s Day, the Missing Children’s Network is asking the public for its continued help in locating children by visiting our missing children’s page on the website for more details.

“With over 5,000 cases of missing children reported to police last year in Quebec, it is important that we talk to children about safety without unduly frightening them. Keeping that dialogue going is even more critical and key to preventing the exploitation and disappearance of youth”, said Pina Arcamone, Director General of the Missing Children’s Network.

Seven years later the grief is still very palpable for the Fortin-Lachance family, however, they remain undeterred and continue to keep hope in their hearts. “The last seven years without David have been long and painful for our family. We miss him each and every day of the year. Luckily, we can count on the support of the Missing Children’s Network and the media who continue to help us in our on-going efforts to find our son,” said Mrs. Lachance.

About the Missing Children’s Network Founded in 1985, the Missing Children’s Network is the only non-profit organization in Quebec that is dedicated to the search for missing children and to the prevention of their disap-

pearance. Regardless of the motive for the disappearance, from running away to a parental abduction or criminal abduction, the Missing Children’s Network’s team supports, accompanies, and counsels families whose child is missing.

In addition, the team works closely with law enforcement agencies, child welfare organizations, and the media to recover these children and bring them home safely. Since its creation, the Missing Children’s Network has assisted law enforcement in recovering 1,162 children and has educated over 175,000 students on how to stay safe in their day-to-day lives, both on and offline.

Perrier looks forward to being involved in the development and evaluation of projects for the town. With a 50year background in small business and commercial financing, he brings a lot of sound evaluation experience to the council table.

Although not a resident of District 3, Stephenson has lived in the oldest house in Rigaud at the edge of the river close to the heart of town for 30 years. She has a history of working with other residents to preserve the mountain that is largely privately owned. “I was part of a group that worked to protect the mountain over 20 years ago,” said Stephenson. “We managed to put together $600,000 worth of grants in an effort to purchase more than 500 hectares of mountain land,” she said adding that, unfortunately, the deal fell apart.

She is greatly interested in the current efforts of the town and VaudreuilSoulanges MRC to create a long-term solution. “It will have to be a compromise between saving the mountain and having some development.”

With a background in farming, Stephenson sees a need to represent the farming community in the district and what used to be the Parish of SainteMadeleine-de-Rigaud. She understands

The issue of potable water and water quality available in Rigaud is important to Stephenson. “Over the years, there have been contamination problems with one of the wells,” she said noting that specific issue has been resolved but many residents now have to deal with discolored water with a high chlorine content.

On Thursday, the successful return of the Hudson Farmers’ Market showcasing local vendors on its new site on the recently-manicured grassy knoll under the trees overlooking the parking lot at the corner of Selkirk and Main where it has always been staged to date.

Friday, donations for victims of the Fort McMurray picked up at the Hudson Legion Branch #115.

Saturday, Finnegan’s famous flea market where I bumped in to many new vendors who told me they were gobsmacked at both the setting and the turn-out of potential buyers from throughout the region. And were all planning to return. There is still much more to come this weekend. Be that as it may, however, I’m going off on a rant. A big one!

--------------BRING BACK THE STOCKS - And it’s addressed to the moronic, imbecilic idiot or idiots who trashed and smashed a treasured hand-crafted wooden precious pergola before chucking it on a 10-foot high-cedar fence in pieces sometime late Friday night early Saturday morning.

What makes this senseless vandalism - is there any other kind? - so sad and poignant is the fact that it was at the home of Mary Jefferies, whose beloved husband Maurice passed away just weeks ago and whose life was celebrated at a packed memorial service at St. James’ Church.

Says Mary, “I am so upset. After recently suffering a deep personal loss, imagine my horror on awakening on a beautiful Saturday morning in this town of ours and finding that persons unknown had decided that the wooden pergola near Selkirk and Park should be uprooted and flung on top

of the hedge!

“This lovely decoration was made many years ago by a dear friend, Hans Kaiser, sadly also no longer with us, and when Maurice and I moved to Selkirk we decided it would be perfect on the corner. So many people mentioned how they enjoyed seeing it there, lit up at Christmas and surrounded by flowers. I cannot imagine what would prompt a person to such a wanton act of vandalism but if you read this, know that you have caused me further distress at the most sad time in my life.”

Mary, I’m not sure if these numbskulls can even read. Or even remember, when they possibly sobered up the next morning, their stupid act of vandalism that caused you so much hurt. Now I’m not a carpenter by any stretch of the imagination, but if there is anyone reading this who thinks they may be able to rebuild the pergola, or at least is ready to check it out to see what - if anything - can be done to save it, please give me a buzz at (450) 4587154 or e-mail me at creation@videotron.ca.

And while we’re at it, perhaps together we could build a big set of stocks to be erected outside the nearby Town Hall where we could coral caught vandals and pelt them for a day with eggs or fruit and vegetables or whatever! Perhaps exhibitors at the Hudson Legion-sponsored Farmer’s Market would even be ready to chip in. Oops, the vandals’ parents and appointed lawyers would certainly object as it would infringe upon… And we couldn’t have that, could we?

What we could have, however, and something that many Hudsonites have told me they would like to see - including myself and my beautiful Sunshine who were also the target of such vandalism around the same hours last year - is beefed up Hudson Community Patrol presence in the village centre from Friday midnight on through Saturday morning. For as anyone knows, vandals rarely, if ever, strike during the day. As tax payers, is that too much to ask? Again, let me know what you think. And now let’s move on to more positive stuff!

--------------FORT McMURRAY BOUND - To literally a big moving van that showed

up at the Hudson Legion early last Friday morning - courtesy of Demenagement Westmount Moving and at no charge whatsoever - to pick up all boxes and bags of items donated by local residents for delivery to Alberta to help victims of the Fort McMurray disaster that is still unfolding this week.

“Fantastic, unbelievable, and such a gracious gesture on the part of the company,” said Bruce Munro who initiated the campaign and who, together with Bill Sansom, was all ready to make the drive himself and at his own expense.

A gesture that came about when Bruce contacted Hudsonite and Senator, Larry Smith, a minor shareholder in the company. Said Bruce, “He immediately offered to help and support us and the next thing we knew there was a truck at the door.” Laughingly, he added, “With all the bad news coming out of the Senate in recent months, finally something positive to report!”

And so a really big bravo to all. Talk about a community spirit helping another community just under 4000 km away in their time of need!

--------------SUPER SPRING FLING - Meanwhile, literally just a few minutes’ walk from Mary Jefferies’ home and adjacent to the market, the lawn of Wyman Memorial United Church is the place to be on Saturday, June 4 - rain or shine - for a fabulous finale to Spring Fling that is all about the garden. And with a fantastic raffle the proceeds of which will go towards helping the participating non-profit associations.

There will be plant sale kiosks organized by Wyman, the Hudson Garden Club, and the Hudson Food Collective with annual, perennial and vegetable plants aplenty. The Hudson War Memorial Library has been saving up gardening books and, for those looking for some inspiration or advice, this is a great opportunity to pick up one or more for a very modest price.

Volunteers from Le Nichoir Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre will be there promoting bird-friendly gardening with a giveaway of Allegheny Serviceberry shrubs to the first 75 visitors and will be selling Le Nichoir-approved hummingbird feeders just in time for the return of the Ruby-throated hummingbird. And the Greenwood Centre for Living History will be showing off entries from the Greenwood Great Lilac Photo Contest and announcing the winner during the event.

All in all, a great way to wrap up the first ever Hudson Rites of Spring Festival. It’s all happening at the church, 513 Main Road, Hudson, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dividing her time between St. Lazare and Bainsville, Ontario, Leah Lindeman found time between raising three children to write a historical fiction novel based around the 1917 Halifax explosion.

Ask Leah Lindeman where she lives and she’ll tell you that half her life is in Bainsville, Ontario and the other half is in St. Lazare, Quebec. Ask her what she does and she’ll tell you that she’s a mother and a writer—two professions which involve nurturing, cultivation and care.

Lindeman, however, compares writing to making homemade buttermilk.

“A writer has so many wonderful ideas floating around. But he scrambles them and cooks up a storm in his mind to figure out what he could make out of the throng… after figuring out what works and what doesn’t, he pours out all the unnecessary ideas, leaving a mass of goo to flesh out… And once he’s done, he gets a book or article, (or edible butter).”

Lindeman has spent the last five years raising her three children and writing her book, Redeemed from the Ashes, a historical-fiction novel based around the 1917 Halifax explosion following a maritime collision of a munitions’ ship.

The story follows Evelyn Richardson as she recovers from her injuries and tries to find her missing husband.

In the midst of her search, she encounters a doctor who begins to weaken her resolve towards finding her husband.

Trapped between the past and possible future, Evelyn must decide if she will move forward with her life or keep standing still while life passes her by.

The idea for this novel first took root while Lindeman was completing an assignment for her studies at the Institute of Children’s Literature. The story slowly grew over the years as she found time to write in between diaper changes and feedings.

Once the book was complete it underwent several rounds of editing be-

fore it became a finished product. She had several impartial readers give her feedback, and hired professional editors to help her fine-tune her work.

Meanwhile, she began educating herself on the process of self-publishing, seeking advice from friends and doing internet research. Her goal is to get her book into as many readers’ laps as possible. In pursuing this goal, she’s created a video trailer for her book and has made the book available on multiple websites.

The books are also available in several local bookstores in Bainsville and Leah is hoping to get it on the shelves at the Chapters in Pointe-Claire.

For years Vreni Seminchuk’s oldest child, David, was in perfect health. “He used to be a very active person,” said the St. Lazare resident of her 47-yearold son, who is 6-foot-8 and goes by the nickname “Hightower.”

Until Tarlov cyst disease struck, David Seminchuk, a former Hudsonite who now lives in British Columbia, worked as a computer technician, airline ramp agent and most recently as a technical field agent for Shaw Communications, Vreni Seminchuk said.

But in 2009 his back started to hurt, his situation progressively worsened and now he’s on disability. “Now he’s so limited in what he can do because he can’t sit,” she said. “The cysts often are in the sacrum but in total he has 13 cysts going up his spinal cord and so we’ve been looking for some answers just to give him a better quality of life.”

On May 12, she launched a $25,000 GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to

help cover David’s travel and medical expenses so he can seek surgery and medical care in Switzerland.

The cysts cause debilitating pain whenever David sits down. “When you have a Tarlov cyst on the sacrum, it’s like sitting on a very pointy rock,” Seminchuk explained. Also known as perineural cysts, “some people do have them but they don’t have any symptoms of it,” she said. “But there is a small percent, like five percent or less, where it is symptomatic and it causes so much damage in the body and it is totally life changing.”

In their search for solutions, Seminchuk, David, her husband, and her two other children learned surgery could improve David’s quality of life.

Yet they discovered the Canadian medical system doesn’t recognize symptomatic Tarlov cysts as a rare disease, she said. It took years to get the Atypical Tarlov Cysts diagnosis but doctors here don’t do surgery for the condition, nor is there government assistance for out-of-country surgeries and medical care, Seminchuk said.

They found two doctors in the United States who specialize in the surgery, a complicated operation Seminchuk described as “very risky because the cysts themselves are wrapped around the membrane of

the inside of the spinal cord, which is called the arachnoid. And when they do the surgery and they take away these cysts, if they touch the arachnoid it can be very, very dangerous. The person could become paralyzed.”

But the doctors are privatized. “The quote that we got from the doctor in Dallas was $60,000, that’s to do one of the cysts on his sacrum and that doesn’t include physiotherapy after,” Seminchuk said. “That is unreachable for us. It’s astronomical that kind of money for Canadians.”

Because Seminchuk is Swiss-born automatically giving her children Swiss citizenship, David learned he’s eligible for medical care in Switzerland, which reduces the cost greatly. “The moment he steps on Swiss ground he is considered a Swiss citizen and he comes under their social system and so because he’s on disability, Switzerland will also take care of him, up to a point,” she said.

“There is a doctor there and he’s a very, very, well-known surgeon and he looked at all of David’s medical records and he said ‘I will do this surgery provided when you come to Switzerland I do all the tests myself, I want all the diagnostics done in Switzerland.’ ” She hopes readers will recognize her son’s name. “David went to school here right from the time he started kindergarten until he graduated from Hudson High School…. I’m hoping someone will say, ‘hey, I remember that guy.’ ” Seminchuk urges people to share her GoFundMe campaign, “...Like I said to some people who just put in

Last Sunday, May 22, a group of volunteer residents of Terrasse-Vaudreuil joined municipal councillors and Mayor Michel Bourdeau to carry out a clean-up of the shoreline at Gilles-Dicaire Park.

The municipality would like to acknowledge the involvement of Ariane Brazeau, who for the second consecutive year, took the initiative to organize this day as part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.

Vaudreuil-Soulanges drug arrests Two men were arrested in VaudreuilDorion for drug possession with the purpose of trafficking May 19, around 1 a.m. Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Sgt. Bruno Beaulieu reports that following a routine traffic stop near the corner of St. Henri Avenue and Trestler Street, police found more than 30 bags containing a substance that resembled cocaine.

The two men, aged 37 and 48, were interviewed and released with a promise to appear in court.

Police are crediting a tip from the public for a May 19 cannabis seizure in Les Cèdres that netted over 170 plants, 330 cannabis cuttings, approximately nine kilograms of bulk marijuana, and equipment used in production. SQ spokesperson Sgt. Ingrid Asselin said a 41-year-old man was arrested at the scene and appeared at the Valleyfield Courthouse. He was charged with cannabis production and possession with intent of trafficking.

He remained in custody until May 20.

The cottage was originally built in 1848 or 1849 by the owner of Riversmead Farm, R.W. Shepherd. It was built for the farmers and workers on Riversmead Farm. The cottage burned to the ground shortly after being built; the cottage you see today was rebuilt in 1850 with the original foundation made of fieldstone.

Many houses on Main Road in Como were lived in by members of the Shepherd family and the area became known as Shepherd Village.

A charming brick path leads you to this historic gem. From the outside, it is deceiving how bright the interior of the cottage is.

You step right into a luminous open-space living room and dining room. The original beams are still visible. The cottage is nicely decorated with beautiful artwork and many pieces are made by a family member who is a well-known Norwegian artist.

Every piece of furniture in the house tells a story. The house owners have a unique talent and love for transforming old pieces of furniture into new pieces. For example, a cabinet is made from old doors. The house owner nonchalantly explained how he “just reassembled them.” Another example is the dining room table that is made of wood salvaged from a barn. The dining room chairs have been stripped and levelled with spacers to make them uniform in height.

The built-in shelves in the living room came with the house. They add charm and

Home and Estate Scouts clean up Hudson’s Sandy Beach for six years in a row Over 1780 pieces of trash collected James Parry Your Local Journal

Always prepared, and as they have done for the past five years, Cavagnal (Hudson) Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers headed over to Hudson’s Sandy Beach on the shore of the Lake of Two Mountains on Wednesday evening, May 18. And not just to camp out, have fun, roast marshmallows, and relax before the Victoria Day long weekend – but for an annual monumental task.

To be more specific, they were all par-

ticipating in the Scouts’ Annual Sandy Beach Nature Park Cleanup which, for the past two years, has been registered with the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. And what a haul they made.

According to Scout leader, Stéphane Hogue, here’s a partial list and tally of some of the items they found. Some 295 pieces of plastic, 388 cigarette butts and cigar tips, 97 bottle caps, as well as 595 pieces of foam and plastic. Overall, some 1780 pieces of trash. And certainly more than was picked up last year.

Have said it before, and will surely say it again in some future column, but boy do I love this time PHOTO BY GREG JONES of year in the garden! Just came in from a stroll around, and it fair boggles the mind it does.

For a couple of weeks, a pair of little birds has been flitting in and out of my garage-cum-potting shed, building a nest in an angle of the cross beams. No idea what they are as they fly so fast.

But every morning there is a new little pile of moss and stuff below waiting to

be added.

Less welcome - but waddya gonna do - are squirrels and crows stripping bark off the trees presumably to make their own nests. Hopefully far away.

And then there are the bees, miraculously appearing from nowhere sniffing out the pink and blue-blooming Pulmonaria, Violets, and Forget-meNots.

The Hyacinth, Tulips and Daffodils may be dying down, but in the veggie garden, lettuce, arugula, and peas planted just a week or so ago are already sprouting. And poking through the soil seemingly in a rush to meet the warmer weather to come are Hostas, Wild Ginger, Peonies, Iris, Day Lilies, Lily-of-the Valley, Elephant Ears,

Bleeding Hearts, and magnificent Ostrich Ferns that can shoot up almost a foot a day under the right conditions.

Don’t forget Matteuccia struthiopteris, better known as Fiddleheads and fit for picking for only a very few weeks and, if you’re in luck, you may still find some at supermarkets and farmers’ markets throughout the region.

Speaking of ostriches, a true story.

I once won an ostrich race in South Africa. On the bird, that is, not on the plant. Was editing a national travel magazine at the time and was invited to join a group of five journalists on a familiarization tour of South Africa.

One day we were invited to participate in an ostrich race, a popular sport over there.

“Just pretend you are riding a motorbike, hold on to both wings, and whatever you do don’t fall off,” we were instructed by the jocular chief jockey.

“And if you do, don’t try to stand up.

Miraculously, and holding on for dear life, I didn’t fall off. In fact, Shaka and I were first past the post and won a giant ostrich egg good for about a dozen omelets!

Which reminds me. Now is the perfect time, if you don’t already have them, to invest in a few herbs. Either to plant in your garden or to pop in pots on your balcony or patio to give added zest to your own omelet or whatever you are cooking up. Herbs being herbs, they don’t need rich soil and will survive with the occasional sprinkling of water. But more about that in my next column.

Until then, have fun in your garden and watch out for those skeeters. They have indeed returned!

After an intense final game against the St. Leonard Lions, the U12FA Hawks team won gold in an exciting penalty shootout. Two athletes from Dojo Perrot Shima participated in the recent Judo National Championships 2016 in Calgary, Alberta.

Roxanne Mallette participated in her first national tournament, and finished third in the senior women over 78 kilos.

Alex Marineau competed in both the U21, and the Seniors’ tournament.

On Saturday in the U21 he finished with a silver medal, which is a fantastic result. He then went on to compete in the Seniors of the Canadian Championships and with even more force, Alex took the

gold medal in the under 73 kilos category.

With these victories, Alex is almost assured a spot in the Pan American Games.

This makes him the second to win the gold medal and be Canadian Champion after Ryan Proulx who was also Canadian Champion. (Who was unfortunately not able to participate in the Championship this year due to injury).

Richard Proulx of Dojo Perrot Shima is extremely proud of Alex who started his judo career with him at the age of five.
