It took a May 28 accident in which a toddler was hit by a car on Boulevard Perrot to mobilize a number of NotreDame-de-l’Île-Perrot (NDIP) parents into petitioning elected officials to address speeding vehicles along a threekilometre stretch between Point-duDomaine and 101st Avenue.

“In 2009, I approached council about the traffic problems on Boulevard Perrot,” said Yan Vanbrugghe, a resident since 2007 and father of two children. “We had young kids at the time in strollers and found it too dangerous to walk on the road.” Vanbrugghe recounted how the installation of a camera and mobile radar display indicated there was indeed a problem and the traffic committee asked the Sûreté du Québec for police presence as a deterrent.

“They sent one police car for one morning between 10 and 10:45 a.m. when there wasn’t a car on the road,” he said. “We never heard anything more since then.”

Though Vanbrugghe said the May 28 accident fortunately resulted in nothing more than minor injuries, it’s a wake-up call that the issue needs to be addressed before consequences are more serious.

Vanbrugghe was accompanied at the July 12 NDIP council meeting by nine other families who had their young children in tow, all residents along the contested stretch of road.

While NDIP has made recent strides in installing bicycle lanes along the boulevard between Point-du-Domaine and Boulevard St-Joseph as well as the recent road expansion to accommodate cyclists on southern and

eastern portions of the municipality, the long, straight stretch of road that has recently seen an influx of young families move in is more attractive to speeders and, by extension, more dangerous to cyclists and pedestrians.

“I’ve installed security fencing all around my property,” said Vanbrugghe, “but now my kids are getting older and want to go ride their bicycles. If people obey the (50 km/hr) speed limit it’s not a problem but we regularly see cars go by at an estimated 80 to 100 kilometres an hour. It’s dangerous.”

Vanbrugghe deposited a petition bearing 98 signatures of residents of the 110 households visited who want to see the speed issue addressed with specific measures.

Resident and father of three young children, Louis Sewina presented council with a number of studies obtained from the website of the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) outlining the efficacy of speed bumps to curtail speeding.

“I’ve done a tour of Île Perrot,” he said, “and what I’ve found is other municipalities have been proactive in addressing road safety.” Sewina highlighted Pincourt’s recent bike path installation bordered by grooved pavement to audibly warn drivers if they drift into the bike lane as well as other speed prevention measures taken around NDIP’s new Parc des Éperviers.

Though in previous years, roadside signs displaying pictograms of cyclists alongside cars with the words ‘Partagez la route’ were installed on either end of the contested stretch of road, they are not present this year.

concerns raised by the mail carrier. According to Canada Post spokesperson Geneviève Latour, the delivery suspension was said to be based on a decision by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC).

Both Sewina and Vanbrugghe want council to consider installing speed bumps on the 3-kilometre stretch.

While there was a short-lived attempt at addressing the speeding issue roughly 20 years ago with the installation of stop signs at 81st and 87th Avenues, they were soon removed as very few motorists respected them.

Mayor Danie Deschênes said council’s primary objection to speed bumps is that it would impede the response time of firetrucks.

Quoting from an MTQ document, Sewina said, “A speed bump measuring 80 millimetres (in height) by 3.5 to

4 metres length will only slow down a fire truck by 10 seconds.” Sewina also described a successful model of speed bump used in Europe that uses three bumps side by side, allowing fire trucks emergency passage through the spaces between.

“Certainly, we’re aware of the issue,” Deschênes said. “There has been much initiative taken in the last few years to address speeding and make the streets safer for our children.” She said council will discuss the speed bump ideas raised by the residents.

“In the short term, until we find a permanent solution, we can potentially install signs on the centre lane reminding motorists about the speed limit,” said Deschênes. “Depending on what we have in stock, we’ll try to get those installed this week.”

Political will The elected officials of the Town of Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot are to be commended for recent steps they’ve taken to ensure the roadside safety of their residents with the reconfiguration of some roadways to include dedicated spaces for cyclists and pedestrians. And while it’s understood that these modifications are limited by geographical constraints, it doesn’t mean solutions are unattainable. (See story on page 3).

Promoting healthier lifestyles, by necessity, must be accompanied by sensitization of motorists to respect all road users and, as history has shown, these are not always lessons easily learned.

The last time attempts were made to curtail speeding along a three-kilometre stretch of road in the town, the two stop signs that were installed were ignored by most motorists and ultimately removed months later following driver backlash.

We know that change is difficult and most people are creatures of habit.

Squawking ensued when garbage pickup was reduced to once a week. More grumbling came with mandated recycling programs. But, adaptable creatures that we are, we ultimately complied and our collective neighbourhoods and environments are all the better for it.

Stop signs or other speed reduction efforts will not be popular with motorists who’ve been accustomed to flaunting the speed limit for the past two decades. But caving in to those unwilling to adapt to a change for the collective good will only compound the problem exponentially.

Let’s not wait until someone is seriously hurt before concrete, lasting steps are taken to finally address the problem.

Dear Editor: editor@yourlocaljournal.ca Dear Editor, At 1:30 this Wednesday afternoon, on my way to pick up my wife the temperature gauge on my car read 34.5 degrees and environment Canada had issued a high heat warning, telling us to stay comfortable in a cooler temperature, I saw a woman riding a bicycle with a young boy on the rack behind her (no helmet), and a very hot looking cocker-spaniel pulling them along (it did not seem as if the woman was making much effort to pedal) .I stopped and told her what she was doing was very cruel for the poor dog. Firstly I was told to mind my own business; secondly she said she was going to the pond at the sandpits.

Animal cruelty is everybody’s business and should not be taken lightly. Making a dog run on a 35 degree day is not very smart. He could suffer from hyperthermia and eventually die and I don’t believe that would be much fun for your son now would it?

Robert Baxter St. Lazare Dear Editor, For the second month in a row I had asked St. Lazare Council for a breakdown of costs incurred for the au Galop Festival. Again they did not have figures available and maintained that they came within the budget. If, as they say, they came within budget, they should be proud to present a few figures when asked. By waiting to read about it does not wash with me. The mayor and councillors work for us, not vice versa. I believe that an individual was hired for $48,000. This could have

been confirmed.

I believe we need to get a petition prepared with 500 signatures plus an additional 17 people (town hall) to sign and have someone on council resign. We cannot afford to spend taxpayers’ money.

Taxes collected by the town do not cover the entire yearly budget. We do not have the population of large towns to cover costs.

Time for the citizens of St. Lazare to come out to monthly meetings and say enough is enough.

With a population of almost 20,000 why can’t we get at least 1000 people attending?

By not coming out, you are giving council cart blanche to spend our hard-earned money.

Come on people, wake up.

Richard Masys St. Lazare Dear Editor, After reading the article about Mayor Robert Grimaudo’s comments concerning the festival au Galop, I have to give my opinion on this expense.

When I moved to St. Lazare in 1993, the population was 5,000 citizens. By 2010, it reached 20,000 with over 6,000 homes and the area remained beautiful.

As taxpayers, do we really need to spend $350,000 to promote the city of St. Lazare? The beautiful area sells itself. This festival may have benefitted certain businesses such as restaurants and the grocery store.

Pincourt residents mostly positive about Duhamel Avenue conversion John Jantak Your Local Journal

The consensus among city officials is that the recent conversion of Duhamel Avenue in Pincourt into a oneway street northbound for motorists with the other half set aside as a multifunctional bicycle/pedestrian path has been positive overall.

Town Manager Michel Perrier told Your Local Journal following the Tuesday evening council meeting on July 12 that the town has received several comments from residents since the conversion officially took effect on July 1 and that the overall consensus was positive, although not everyone is pleased with the changeover.

Comments posted on social media immediately after the changeover showed a fairly equal divide among people who supported the conversion and those who opposed it. Perrier said some residents have also contacted the town to express their opinions. “It’s been mostly very positive so far,” said Perrier.

The conversion of Duhamel which officially took effect on July 1 resulted in the conversion of a four kilometre stretch of the former bi-directional, two-lane riverside roadway exclusively into a one-way road northbound from Cardinal-Léger Boulevard to Monseigneur Langlois Avenue at Bellevue Park.

The northbound stretch of roadway was converted into a bicycle/pedestrian path complete with street markings, brightly coloured yellow concrete blocks and new road signage that prohibit motorists from accessing the path. Grooves were also dug into the centre of the road to keep cars from straying into the reserved path.

Security personnel were stationed at the intersection of Duhamel and

Langlois the first two days when the conversion became official to advise motorists of the new configuration. A one-block stretch of Bellevue between 9th Avenue and Langlois next to Bellevue Park was also converted into a one-way street northbound with the southbound section reserved as a multi-functional path.

The changeover on Bellevue was made to address traffic and speeding issues that have plagued residents living on that stretch of road and to keep the path that runs along the riverside through the park exclusively for pedestrians. One resident congratulated council for the change saying that vehicle traffic on that section of road has dropped substantially.

But another resident who lives on Duhamel said that while having a reserved bicycle path is a good idea during the summer, he felt it was impractical and unnecessary to have it during the winter because it could create problems for motorists especially during ice and snow storms.

Even though the changeover is being touted by the town as a pilot project, Perrier said the one year trial period is to gather as much information about problems as they arise so the town can modify their plans accordingly when work begins next spring to permanently modify and repave Duhamel.

Perrier said that while people may not be bicycling on Duhamel during winter, pedestrians do walk on the roadway and they need a safe zone.

“The plan is for it to be a year-round facility,” Perrier told Your Local Journal. “This is why we call it a multifunctional path. It’s not strictly a biking path. It’s also for people who take walks, walk their dogs, or push their baby strollers.”

In June council voted to put out a call for public tender for a dog park that includes a football field-and-ahalf size dog run at Luger Triangle, the city’s solution to complaints from residents about dogs running loose at the site, heightened by media reports of pit bull attacks in other parts of Quebec. Though for years dog owners were reportedly never ticketed, since July 1, anyone walking their dog off leash in Beaconsfield’s portion of the Luger Triangle risks fines of close to $150 for a first offence.

“For some people it (the dog park project) may have come out of the blue but that’s been something we’ve been talking (about) for two years,” Boileau said.

He said the dog park, located on former commercial land donated to the city by Mario Grilli, will include a larger park of at least 130,000 square feet and a smaller dog run of about 25,000 square feet. The eastern side of the dog park will incorporate an existing path and 75 trees the city planted with TD Bank in 2014, and while most of the park will have double gates and be fenced in, there won’t be any gates in its northern section, Boileau said.

Following a number of complaints from residents who are uncomfortable with unleashed dogs, the Town of Beaconsfield is going ahead with its plans to build a fenced-in dog park next to Angell Woods.

An existing parking lot used by Beaurepaire train station commuters makes it possible for people to park and use the dog run.

“We tried as hard as possible (to) keep the pathway for pedestrians to walk, not cut trees and hopefully it will be within an acceptable cost,” Boileau said.

But before the meeting’s official question period began, dog owners called out questions from their seats.

Along with questions about whether the path is included in the price and

concerns about parking, a woman asked about the cost, which Boileau said would be less than $70,000.

“So $70,000 to install a dog run, how about if you were to put a pedestrianenclosed fence walkway through the site?”

“The dogs would be off leash?” Boileau asked.

“Correct,” the woman answered.

“I’m sorry, that would be against the by-law,” Boileau replied.

Rowdy noise complaints resurface in Ste. Anne’s John Jantak Your Local Journal

Mayor Paola Hawa is urging all Ste. Anne de Bellevue residents to contact 911 directly to report noise complaints about rowdy parties because the city’s municipal patrol doesn’t have the authority to intervene.

Hawa’s recommendation comes after a couple complained during the Monday evening council meeting on July 11 that repeated calls to the municipal patrol failed to stop a loud party at a private residence in the city’s southern sector.

The couple said they even followed advice posted on the city’s website that noise complaints should be reported to the municipal patrol. Hawa replied that while the municipal patrol does look into noise infractions, rowdy parties don’t fall into that domain and should be reported directly to 911 because it’s strictly a police issue.

“People need to call 911,” Hawa told Your Local Journal. “It’s clear that the rules for calling are not what they used to be. It’s not just about emergencies anymore. Our municipal patrol is not equipped to go face 10 or 15 drunken people in an apartment. It’s not their job. It’s the job of the SPVM (Service de police de la Ville de Montréal).

“Citizens are getting confused about the role and responsibility of the police and local municipal patrols,” Hawa added. “Local patrols are there to make sure you don’t leave your garbage out all day. They are not there to put their lives in jeopardy by intervening in a fight with drunken people. It is not a Ste. Anne responsibility; it’s an SPVM responsibility.”

Efforts made by the city to engage its citizens in two prior open forum discussions with SPVM police officials about problems within the community were met with public indifference because fewer than 10 people attended each of the two meetings, said Hawa.

Train speed resolution Concerns about a possible freight train derailment similar to the LacMégantic disaster prompted council to adopt a resolution requesting Canadian Pacific (CP) to maintain its current 50 mph (80 km/h) speed limit. Ste. Anne’s resolution comes one month after Beaconsfield adopted a similar resolution when it learned that CP is proposing to raise the speed limit to 60 mph (96 km/h).

Municipal officials are worried that any increase in speed from its current limit will increase the risk of a derailment that could result in a situation similar to Lac-Mégantic when a train

“It’s bad enough there’s a risk to begin with and now the risk is going to increase,” said Hawa. “It’s as if LacMégantic never happened. It’s a little bit irresponsible. I understand the commercial necessity of fast trade but there’s also a reality that when you’re crossing a densely populated urban zone, safety has to come first. We need more vigilance, not less.”

Summer holidays Now that school is out, my daily phone call home to the boys has me reminding them to hang out the laundry, fold the clean clothes, vacuum, empty the dishwasher, walk the dog, play outside, get dirty, go fishing, don’t eat all the freezies and, most of all, stay off the godforsaken electronic devices.

Until my own vacation time comes up, we’re in the nebula of teenage summer down time – not yet ready to go away without the parents but too old (and too cool) for summer day-camp. And I’m loath to have them pass the abbreviated season we call summer bathed in the cool blue glow of an LCD screen.

It’s not so much that I worry about their brains turning to mush scant days following the end of the school year with online games. I worry more about what my young burgeoning scientists will concoct following online tutorials that show how to turn everyday items into potential doomsday devices.

At this writing, there’s a finely grated pile of rust scraped from the rocker panel of a 2001 Honda Civic drying on a paper towel stretched over a bowl on the kitchen table. It waits to be combined with aluminum dust, made from small pieces of tin foil cut into little squares before being fed into the Black and Decker coffee bean grinder my youngest purchased with his own money, solely for his experiment of making thermite.

For those without arsonist tendencies, thermite is a mixture of aluminum powder and iron oxide that burns really, really hot.

“I was thinking of using it in my forge,” my son told me of the pit dug in the backyard whose flames are intensified by forced air from a hair-dryer directed into a metal pipe at the base of the fire, all to create temperatures hot enough to smelter aluminum in a crucible.

I was just coming to terms with that experiment when he told me, “I’d like to make an induction smelter hot enough to melt copper but that’s not gonna be for a while.”

I haven’t yet told my brother, a firefighter, but I have it on the highest authority that most firefighters are closet firebugs anyways.

Lessons from the internet are endless and combined with a lack of inhibition, a number of engineering feats have been carried out, some without my knowledge, in my own backyard.

When I first met my youngest’s Univers Social teacher, rather than discuss my son’s marks, he asked how the dam was doing.

“Comment va la construction du barrage?”

My son passed the course so I really have no valid complaint.

A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing as I discovered when the kids fished a flat screen projector television out of the garbage with the intention of making a lens capable of intensifying a beam of sunlight hot enough to melt things you really shouldn’t.

With the help of co-conspirators including my husband and my brother – yeah, the firefighter – they built and framed the lens to capture the solar rays and spent a juvenile day making things melt, burn, and explode with a beam of light reaching almost 1100º Celsius.

This was followed recently by a model of combustion inside a homemade jet engine built using an empty jam jar, some rubbing alcohol, and a supply of wooden matches.

At the risk of the potential outcome of the alternative, those mindless internet games are beginning to look better and better.

I was at the presentation of 11:30 a.m. on Sunday of the Knights of Valour and only about 25 per cent of the seats were occupied. I don’t understand how the mayor can say that all the shows were full.

In my opinion, there were less people this year compare to last year.

I surely hope that Mr .Grimaudo will be transparent and publish the actual expenses in a detailed manner.

Dear Editor, Clouds of scent are among the pleasures of being on the road in Hudson in an open-air vehicle: Lilacs are ubiquitous in spring, baking biscotti sweeten Cameron at Main, and even the occasional skunk can be interesting for a short time.

A personal favourite has been the intersection of Birch Hill at Main Road where spring apple blossoms have been followed by the aroma of the apples baking on the trees in the September sun.

But not this year - the roadside trees have all disappeared.

It reinforces our faith in humanity to collaborate with people who will work really hard for absolutely no other reason than to help others.

There’s no glory in stuffing 300 gift bags, sending and replying to hundreds of emails, updating a website every week or moving hay bales, barriers, tents, and tires around town. There is, however, the possibility that you’re helping a kid you don’t know have a day he’ll always remember and that’s just so much better. It’s a gift to know these people.

Le Nichoir schedules open house in celebration of its new building Lauren Mitchell Special contributor

Le Nichoir Wild Bird Rehabilitation Centre has been planning and working on a new conservatory project for the last few years and are now proud to announce the construction of their new building. The first phase of the project, the new songbird aviary, has been up and running for the past two years along with the second phase of creating education programs.

Now, the final phase of the project, the new bird sanctuary building, will become a much easier and healthier way for the public to be able to have an interactive experience with not only the birds, but also the workers of Le Nichoir.

“We put a lot of thought into the architectural design of the building”, said Lindsay D’Aoust, President of Le Nichoir. “We wanted to make sure it would be a safe environment for the birds but also keep the interactive experience for our visitors.”

Behind the receptionist desk, there will be a hallway where visitors can

look through a window to watch kitchen volunteers building bird food-balls.

A second window right next door will showcase birds who are in the nursery unit. Those vulnerable birds in care will be protected by a one-way window, sound-proof walls, and natural light beaming in from the multiple windows in the room.

The building will also feature new rooms including an inside wet room for aquatic birds during the winter, an isolation area for birds with a contagious illnesses, an x-ray room, a ‘quiet’ room for birds such as wood ducks who are sensitive to sound, and most importantly, a classroom. Le Nichoir will be offering new programs starting in the fall that teach children the importance of conservation of wildlife, and also allow the classroom to be an interactive experience by leading them to the outdoors of the 50-acre grounds by walking through the trails as part of their education.

cles to tourists who would like an inexpensive and green way to discover the region. Tourists can ride their rented bikes for free for one day and bring it back to one of the three locations listed above before closing time.

“Vélo-culture is the combination of three cultural sites in VaudreuilDoiron in a project allowing tourists and citizens of Vaudreuil-Soulanges to rent bikes for free in order to discover the region, its attractions, and its beautiful scenery,” explained Pascale Jeaurond-Lajoie, communications agent for the Musée regional de VaudreuilSoulanges.

Le Zèbre Rouge is a non-profit organization that repairs bikes and brings them back to life. They employ people of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges area who have intellectual or physical disabilities. They have become a large part of the community, and are the ones who have donated both bikes for the project.

For those who are hoping to rent a

bike, a simple procedure of presenting a piece of identification and giving a security deposit of $20 will allow them to ride the bike for free for one day. If you are a family of four, don’t worry, organizers explained they can provide an additional two bicycles in that case.

Although aimed at the idea that tourists would use the bicycles, citizens of

the area are also welcome to try out the experience.

World renowned artist and sculptor leaving Hudson for new home in Vaudreuil-Dorion Major public exhibit for Leo Schimanszky set for MRC building and grounds in September through fall James Parry Your Local Journal

For decades, his sculptures and paintings have taken pride of place in prestigious galleries and exhibits throughout Canada, the U.S., and Europe and his works can be found in public and private collections throughout the world, including several banks.

For many years, people passing his Hudson home on Côte St. Charles between Windcrest Street and Route Harwood have been known to stop and stare in wonder at the outdoor sculptures in what he has transformed into a veritable art gallery of his own.

His name? Leo Schimanszky, who emigrated to Canada exactly 50 years ago from Vienna, Austria, and who has been proud to call Hudson home for the past 32 years. Now, at the age of 73 and “not getting any younger,” he has decided - albeit reluctantly - to call it a day, downsize, and move with his wife Jeannine at the end of August to a new condo in Vaudreuil-Dorion.

Where, beginning September 2 and running through the fall into winter, many of his works will be displayed for all to enjoy both inside and outside the MRC Vaudreuil-Soulanges building at 2555 rue Dutrisac.

Says Nadine Maltais, MRC Agente de développement culturel et social, who met with Shimanszky earlier this week, “We are so pleased to mount this exposition and welcome him to our community. While he is obviously well known in art circles throughout the world, he is perhaps not so well known by many residents and other members of the artistic community here in Vaudreuil.”

Said Shimanszky, in an exclusive interview with Your Local Journal, “I am truly honoured. And while we will be kind of sad to leave Hudson after so many years, this will be a wonderful welcome to our new community.

Which, after all, is not very far away.”

Added Schimanszky, “There comes a time in everyone’s life when one has to recognize that time is passing ever more quickly. So many of my contemporaries - both artists and gallery owners alike - have passed away in recent years. And while artists, such as myself, never really retire, it is time to slow down a little and enjoy life to the fullest.”

From now until his move, some 40 of his sculptures and about 60 paintings, will be available for viewing and sale directly, and not through an art gallery, at his home at 147 Côte St. Charles, Hudson. For more info about

West Island police files Station 3 covering Île Bizard, Pierrefonds-Roxboro and Ste. Geneviève A 16-year-old girl was confronted by two men July 4 who threatened her with violence if she did not give them money. Const. Daniel Maheu reports the girl was walking to the bus stop on Harry Worth Street when two black males approached to speak with her.

Saying she was on her way to see her boyfriend, the men said she was lying and demanded her money. The victim complied and the men fled on foot.

The girl called police from her home and was reportedly transported to hospital and treated for shock. .......................

Three young people are reportedly going door-to-door in Île-Bizard soliciting money under the guise of building a new park near Jacques-Bizard

School. Two boys and a girl aged 11 or 12 are presenting a letter complete with the logo of the school commission and school name with a description of the project. The solicitation is both factually incorrect as confirmed by the school’s principal and illegal.

Police are asking anyone approached by these kids for donations to call 911. .......................

A 31-year-old male cyclist was robbed of his bicycle July 7 at 4 p.m. near the corner of Alexander Street and Gouin Boulevard. The victim was stopped at the corner and approached by the suspect who asked for a cigarette. When the cyclist responded he didn’t have any, the suspect shoved him in the chest to make him fall off his bike. Though the man was able to hit back, the suspect returned the shoves and managed to push the victim off his bike. The suspect fled the scene on the bike eastbound on Gouin. He’s described as a 25-year-old male dressed in black. The bike, a 2016 Schwinn Biggity DLX has a serial number of SNMXDS16962807 and is valued at $425.

Hudson Fire Department monthly report June 2016 HFD Assistant Director Daniel Leblanc Special Contributor

In the month of June, the Hudson Fire Department responded to 22 medical calls and 26 fire calls consisting of alarms, smell of smoke, mutual aids, a shed fire and a boat rescue call assisting the Rigaud Fire Department. We have been getting multiple calls asking about burn bans in our area. With postings on social media, it can be very confusing as to which town has a burn ban or not.

Hudson has a bylaw stipulating the size of accepted fires. Any resident can access By-law 436 (Open air fires) at the following link hudson.quebec/en/services/ customer-service/by-laws. We have also added a link in the fire department section on the website that indicates the danger levels for fires which is supplied

by SOPFEU. It is a live link and it is updated daily. Some have made references to SOPFEU (Société de protections des forêts contre le feu) in their postings. It is important to know that this government agency is responsible for forest fires and not municipal bylaws. We, as a fire department, monitor closely their fire danger indicator and act accordingly as we do border forests within our town.

It is a great tool to remind us of the danger levels and should be used if anyone is uncertain of the conditions. When the levels are high (yellow) or extreme (red), we ask that you use added caution when conducting an open air fire.

Our prevention department was also busy with activities throughout our community. On June 2 and 10, we conducted our annual fire prevention presentation to the staff and volunteers at the Palliative Care Residence. On June 22, Mount Pleasant School had its end of year cel-

ebration and on June 23, St-Thomas had theirs as well. On both occasions, we were asked to participate and this year we had a mini firefighter combat challenge which was a huge success with the kids. They were able to experience a little of what we do and there were no shortages of smiles. Residential smoke detector visits and commercial inspections are in full swing. If you were absent from your home on the day of our visit, you will find a note on the door saying that we passed by and we would appreciate a phone call to re-schedule another date to ensure that your homes are properly protected for fire safety and to answer any questions. For commercial buildings, this is a great time to verify your emergency exits, emergency lights and extinguisher inspections before our arrival.

Sometime in October, we will be conducting a tanker shuttle exercise. This exercise consists of shuttling water in an area of town that is not protected by hydrants. This is closely monitored by an external agency which is affiliated to all insurance companies and in the end, we receive a score depending on the success rate. The test has been done throughout the MRC’s fire departments and lasts approximately an hour. More details will be given in the next months to advise our residents of the times and the location to minimize disruptions.

Lastly, the town’s street fair is coming up on July 30 and 31. Once again, the HFD will be hosting an open house on the Saturday, July 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feel free to stop by with the family for some fun filled activities and truck tours.

Pointe-Claire citizens recognized for helping police

Officers from Station 5 recently presented a certificate of recognition to two deserving citizens of Pointe-Claire, Francis Therien and his wife Danielle Bertrand for exemplary support to their police, as well as their community.

On the evening of December 29, 2015, Mr. Therien and Ms. Bertrand saw a man enter the home of their back neighbor. Mr. Therien thought it could be a family member of the owner but preferred not to take a chance and called 911 so police could make the necessary checks.

An excellent description of the situation and the suspect was given and the call was dispatched. As police arrived, both citizens quickly directed the officers to the position of the suspect. Besides their sense of observation, Mr. Therien and Ms. Bertrand remained calm and precise throughout the intervention, observing quietly and tirelessly rather than intervening themselves, which would have led to the suspect making his escape before the police arrived. It was indeed a break and enter and then became a situation in which the suspect barricaded himself in the house, refusing to surrender. He threatened the police, saying he was armed and had a hostage. He even tried to light three fires in the house before finally surrendering two hours later.

Rapid response of the witnesses coupled with the clarity of their information allowed police to isolate the suspect in the residence upon arrival. Thanks to them, they proceeded to arrest a repeat offender with a heavy criminal past, wanted for similar offenses in addition to being in breach of probation.

Congratulations to Francis Therrien and Danielle Bertrand for their unwavering commitment and for their contribution to making our neighborhood safer.

Article 4 : Types of prosthesis on implants Basically we have two types of prosthesis, the Ćxed and the removable.

The Ćxed prosthesis is the one which is most similar to a natural dentition.

Its fabrication requires a minimum of 4 implants in order to be successful. It provides a great comfort of mastication and has the advantage of not covering a too large portion of the gums, making the bearing of the prosthesis more pleasant for the patients.

However, the drawback is the maintenance of the Ćxed prosthesis which can be more difĆcult in terms of hygiene. For example, the dental ćoss can be more complicated when it comes to go around every abutment (posts). A few patients will have to make appointments with their dental hygienists a couple of times a year in order to compensate on the complexity… Last but not least, the Ćxed prosthesis is generally the most expensive procedure.

The removable prosthesis is either held by a bar or by certain types of individual attachments. Some will use the Locator type; others will use the Zimmer ball type. This type of prosthesis greatly resembles a regular one in appearance except that it is far more stable, it does not move or cause pain.

Another advantage is food inĆltration under the denture which becomes minimal, no more of those painful raspberry pits. What a great feeling, Ćnally eating things you like without pain.

PARRYWINKLE JAMES PARRY Ever wonder who first coined the phrases, it never rains but it pours, it’s bucketing down, and it’s raining cats and dogs? Well PHOTO BY me neither, to MAURICE JEFFERIES be perfectly honest.

Until this past weekend that is. When the second major outdoor happening in Hudson in as many weeks was a total washout. To use a sports analogy, rain stopped play. And boy, did it ever!

One can’t help but feel for all the dedicated organizers, volunteers, and planned participants from throughout the region who had worked so hard to help create something positive for our community this summer. And heaven knows, we need it! Also for the families who were so much looking forward to being there. Only to have their hopes dashed because of something totally beyond anyone’s control - the weather - failing to cooperate.

--------------DERBY DASHED - For the second year in a row, Hudson’s Canada Day celebrations at Thompson Park were cancelled with the much-anticipated fireworks display postponed to a future date still to be determined.

And then this past Saturday, July 9, with organizers, including organizing committee president Joseph Eletr, having worked so hard to make the Hudson Auto Show the biggest to date while launching the first ever annual Hudson Soap Box Derby, particularly for youngsters and teens, the deluge downpoured.

Discouraging potential exhibitors and wiping out any chance of the derby proceeding as planned because of safety reasons. For without exaggeration, competitors would have been hydroplaning down Cameron from Lakeview to St. Jean. Once again, it has been postponed to a future date,

still to be determined.

A darn shame. And can’t wait!

--------------PHRASE FORENSICS - Regarding those phrases above in the opening paragraph, it never rains but it pours means when troubles come, they come together. Its origin? Haven’t a clue.

As for raining cats and dogs, while its origin is unknown, evidently it was in use by the early 18th century, one supposed origin being that it derives from mythology. Dogs and wolves were attendants to Odin, the god of storms, and sailors associated them with rain. Witches, who often took the form of their familiars - cats - are supposed to have ridden the wind. It has also been suggested that cats and dogs were washed from thatched roofs during heavy weather way back, centuries before shingles and tiles.

As for bucketing down, well you don’t have to be a rocket scientist or meteorologist to figure that one out!

--------------FOR THE LOVE OF SHAKESPEARE - Meanwhile, I’m sure that everyone involved with the great Hudson Players Club - an integral and dynamic part of the cultural life of Hudson for the past 68 years - is keeping their fingers crossed for great weather now through this Saturday, July 16, when to honour the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death, they will be staging the world premiere of a brand new play titled, For the Love of Shakespeare.

Written and directed by HPC Board member, Chris Gobeil, and with music by Roy Vuorela, it’s the story of a troupe of travelling Shakespearean actors in the late 19th century and it uses selected scenes, sonnets, and speeches from Shakespeare’s work to illustrate the seven types of love as described by the Ancient Greeks. Namely, Agape, Philia, Ludus, Pragma, Philautia, Storge and Eros, which are claimed to be featured in many of the playwright’s

With the actors wandering and mingling with the audience throughout the performance allowing them to be drawn into the action and become part of the story as it unfolds.

You will hear some of the most important pieces penned by the playwright widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language, including Romeo and Juliet - the Scottish play - The Tempest. Merry Wives of Windsor, Twelfth Night, The Taming of the Shrew, and many, many more.

You will also be able to spend a very special 90 minutes in the beautiful setting of the park at 400 Halcro, Hudson, right by the lake, and on a summer’s evening what could be finer? The performances will take place at 7 p.m. sharp on the evenings of July 14, 15, and 16. And while there is no charge for admission, the performers - all volunteers - may pass their hats around for a token of appreciation for their work. Sure promises to be a most enchanted evening filled with Love! See you there?

--------------JUST JANE - Meanwhile, several readers have told me over the past few days how much they enjoyed the rhetorical questions in last week’s column posed by our local wagster, Jane Kirkwood. Who, horror of horrors, I called Jane Kirkland. For no other reason than I simply goofed. And at time of writing, I had just returned from the West Island.

To make amends for this unforgiveable error - not that Jane herself really minded - here are some more of her observations for your puzzlement and enjoyment. Whose cruel idea was it to put an ‘s’ in the word lisp? If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes? Why is that, no matter what colour bubble bath you use, the bubbles are always white?

But wait, there’s more. Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale?

How do those dead bugs get into enclosed light fixtures? Why is it that whenever you try to catch something that’s falling off a table, you always manage to knock something else over?

Why is it that, in winter, we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat?

And one of my personal favourites, Do Lipton Tea employees take coffee breaks?

Five ways to feel like a kid again this summer

by taking a long bike ride and getting lost in your city. As a bonus, you’ll get to soak up some vitamin D, something most Canadians don’t get enough of.

2. Do something adventurous.

What could make you feel more like a kid again than doing something outside your comfort zone? Think about your biggest fear and conquer it. Afraid of heights? Go skydiving. Terrified of speaking in public? Join a Toastmasters club, which helps members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills. Adventure means different things to different people — find something brave and daring to do and scratch it off your bucket list.

3. Do something crafty. Summer is the perfect time to get crafty by drawing inspiration from nature in its peak or making something with the natural materials you can now access, like

twigs and flowers. Whether it’s sitting outside and sketching your surroundings or baking your first ever apple pie from scratch, impress your friends with something new.

4. Do something good. Part of youthful innocence and wonder is the wholesome desire to help others, without any expectation of getting something in return. Return to this feeling by supporting a charity that works with children and moms—check out the work UNICEF is doing with support from Kiwanis and the Government of Canada to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, a disease that kills one newborn baby every 11 minutes.

5. You’ve worked hard. Don’t feel the need to cram every free minute with fun activities. Sometimes just relaxing with the people you care about is the best way to feel young again.

Quilters bring comfort to palliative care patients Jasmine Sharma Special contributor

A few times a month, in church basements or community centres across the country, quilters gather to socialize and share their knowledge and love of quilting. There are over 40 quilting guilds in the province of Quebec alone. The expertise or experience of quilters may vary but their patience and creativity is simply admirable.

From envisioning the initial design to sewing the top, batting, and backing together, each quilt can take between 10 to 20 hours to complete. It is no wonder that hand-made quilts can cost hundreds of dollars to purchase.

Imagine putting all that time, effort and creativity into making a unique quilt that you just give away? Such generous and selfless artisans did just that, right here in Vaudreuil-Soulanges.

The English Gardener Delightful Daylilies James Parry Your Local Journal

It’s that time of year again.

When orange and yellow Daylilies shaft skywards in gardens and in PHOTO BY GREG JONES herbaceous borders along roadsides throughout the region.

Some gardeners, and it’s no secret, turn up their noses and tend to dismiss them as just something that grows and seemingly spreads regardless of whether they like it or not. Almost like a weed - albeit a pretty one.

But hey, they say, you can’t pick the flowers for a floral arrangement or bouquet as the individual blooms last only a day. Opening in the morning and closing in the evening. Hence their name. And it seems that just about everyone has a clump or two on their property, hardly making it a prized specimen.

Which is exactly why I love Daylilies, of Asian origin, and Hemerocallis fulva to give them their true Latin botanical name. They are big, bold, colourful, re-

quire no maintenance or feeding whatsoever, and they are a trusty perennial readily available to all and cheap as chips at root sales. Or, even better perhaps, as a gift from a fellow gardener.

Just perfect for filling in a problem area in the garden that, ideally, will continue to bloom one day at a time for weeks to come on spikes of stiff green stems that soar above the massed leaves below. Which, even after all the flowers fade and die, make for a great green statement in the garden.

Something that is prized in the Queen’s Garden by Cambridge Cottage at Kew Gardens in England, incidentally, where they have been cultivated in British gardens for centuries as valuable plants for herbaceous borders.

Indeed, English herbalist John Gerard wrote in his Herball (1597), ‘These lilies do grow in my garden, as also in the gardens of Herbarists, and lovers of fine and rare plants; but not wild in England as in other countries.’ Ah, what a difference a few centuries make!

And now with red Monarda, or Bee Balm as it is often known, as well as white Gooseneck Loosestrife, blue tall

Ubiquitous and often denegrated perennial Daylilies are in full bloom right now and deserve greater respect.

Lobelia, and red and pink Phlox coming into bloom in the ever-changing palette that is a perennial garden, may I suggest that you take time out to check out your Daylily and see how beautiful it really is. And if you don’t have any right now, then what are you waiting for?

And over the next three weeks or so while we, here at Your Local Journal, are taking our summer break, don’t forget to keep deadheading those annuals to ensure their continued blooming. If you have any Johnny Jump Ups of the Viola family, pick individual flowers in

full bloom - as we do - and pop them in the ice cube tray in the fridge. Literally frozen in time in all their beauty, they can be served in any chilled drink and look absolutely marvelous.

As for Nastertiums, pick individual flowers in full bloom and pop them in your salad. Not only do they add a vibrant dash of colour but you can eat them too. Same for the subsequent seed pods which taste just like capers!

When Noel Coward’s Private Lives, one of the most successful comedies ever, was first staged in England back in the early 1930s, it was a shocker.

So much so, in fact, that it was almost banned by the censor of the day, Lord Chamberlain, who took umbrage at the fact that one of the female leads not only spoke openly about sex and sexuality, but actually flaunted it.

Can only wonder what he would have made of a production of that very same play coming to Hudson Village Theatre August 11 through 28, directed

by HVT’s artistic director, Matthew Tiffin, enjoying his very first season at the little theatre by the tracks. And a most successful one to date, I might add. Because for the first time ever it is being staged as a real gender-bender!

In what can only be described as a shocking twist, Tiffin has cast female actors playing the male roles. And male actors playing the female parts.

Confused? Then here, in essence, is the plot.

Continued from page 16 Over a dozen members of the Hudson Village Quilters Guild worked meticulously to create several bed and lap quilts which they donated to the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Palliative Care Residence (VSPCR) this past June. The Guild, celebrating its 20th anniversary this fall, also raffled a hand-sewn quilt on which all of its 70 members collaborated. The $2,600 raised from the raffle was donated to the residence in support of its mission: welcoming terminally-ill patients of all ages, free of charge, to offer them specialized palliative care so they may live their final moments with respect and dignity.

Meredith Royds, a 12-year veteran of the Hudson Village Quilters and this project’s coordinator, explains how it all began. “We first thought of doing something for the residence even before it was built ten years ago.”

What started as a project at that time to make one sampler quilt ballooned into 27 bed quilts and five lap quilts.

“The project grew like Topsy!” chuckles Royds.

After 10 years of operation, the residence’s supply of quilts needed replenishing. Some families formed an attachment to the colourful quilts which warmed and comforted their loved ones during their final moments.

Others withered from the thousands of wash cycles they endured to welcome over 750 patients who have passed

through the residence.

The Hudson Village Quilters Guild was approached in 2015 to see if more quilts could be made to replace those lost over the years and those too worn for continued use. Its members worked tirelessly over 18 months to gather donated material, coordinate quilting sessions and find sponsors to cover certain costs like paying for the batting and the necessary machine finishing to ensure durability. Their labour of love yielded seven bed quilts and eight lap quilts to keep patients’ legs warm if they are sitting in a wheel chair. Each bed quilt’s value ranges between $500 to $800 depending on the pattern’s intricacy.

“The quilts personalize each room and brighten them with color,” said Monique Sasseville, Clinical Advisor at the residence. “We truly appreciate the detail and work put into each quilt.

They are handmade works of art donated to the residence for the benefit of all our patients,” she adds. As part of the admissions process, staff who prepare a patient’s room before arrival will pick a quilt based on its colors and patterns to suit the incoming patient’s gender. When a patient passes away, the quilt is washed, folded and tucked into a cabinet until another needs its colourful patterns to brighten the room, warm the bed and bring comfort. Words cannot express how grateful the Palliative Care Residence is for the creative minds, generous spirits and caring hands that quilted for its patients.

Theatre Greenwood’s StoryFest Village Continued from page 28 2016 announces stellar October line-up To be launched by a very special PreStoryFest event presenting the past president of Doctors Without Borders James Orbinski on July 14, Greenwood’s StoryFest 2016 is announcing the full line-up of authors for its annual October literary festival, and it’s another exciting list of the best of Canada’s vibrant writing scene.

Internationally-acclaimed two-time Giller nalist Gail Anderson-Dargatz (Recipe for Bees; The Cure for Death by Lightning) will open StoryFest 2016 on October 2, followed by Terry Fallis, author of The Best Laid Plans and a multiple Stephen Leacock Humour Award winner, on October 4.

This year’s Poetry in Performance evening will feature a talk and readings by two-time Governor General Award for Poetry winner Don McKay and readings by First Nations’ poet Taqriluk Partridge on October 6.

A nalist in this year’s CBC’s Canada Reads competition, Saleema Nawaz (Bone and Bread) will appear on October 11, while acclaimed Seven Days Dead author John Farrow, a.k.a. Trevor Ferguson, will be the guest on October 13.

October 15 will offer two events: an afternoon writers’ workshop, Finding Fun in Writing, with Montreal novelist and journalist Monique Polak and an evening event featuring three authors who write about music: Eric Siblin (The Cello Suites), Nisha Coleman (BUSKER: Stories from the Streets of Paris) and Ian McGillis (The Ga-

zette book review columnist and author of A Tourist’s Guide to Glengarry).

Two-time Giller nominated Heather O’Neill (The Girl Who was Saturday Night; Daydreams of Angels) will be the special guest on October 18 while Commonwealth Writers Prize winner Marina Endicott (Good to a Fault; Close to Hugh) will appear on October 20.

A special lm screening of Jane Austen’s Love and Friendship will take place on October 24 while long-time international scene observer, commentator and columnist Gwynne Dyer will speak on October 25.

StoryFest 2016 will conclude with the very special appearance of multiple Governor General Award-winning author Guy Vanderhaeghe (Daddy Lenin; The Last Crossing; The Englishman’s Boy) on October 29. Vanderhaeghe will also give a writer’s workshop (The Short Story—Writing Fiction with a Punch) later the same day.

Festival passes will go on sale July 14.

A year following its initial conception, built as part of the 150th celebrations of the Town of Hudson, the Hudson Labyrinthe located behind Le Nichoir Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre on Main Road has been vandalized.

“It took all last summer to build,” said one of the project’s creators Esme Terry of the process of finding the land, plowing it, prepare and mulch the surface before gathering the rocks and installing the benches.

“In the middle are mosaics made by local artists and we were planning on planting flowers around the benches.”

anne Bridges arrived at the labyrinth the morning of July 12 to find busted benches, broken beer bottles and an empty beer case, plastic drug bongs, condoms, and litter.

“When you walk it, you feel as though you’re getting to the middle and then you get bounced out again,” said Terry of the labyrinth’s design that serves as a metaphor of life’s journey.

“This has touched a lot of people,” said Terry of the destruction, recounting how the area, nestled in a wooded area, is used daily as a meditative space by various members of the community.

While Terry said the concrete benches had been moved on previous occasions, this is the first time the site was vandalized.

The meeting included several heated exchanges between Beaconsfield dog owners and the mayor in particular, as council argued it has to balance the needs of dog owners with those of other citizens. At one point Mayor Georges Bourelle said he would no longer take questions related to dogs and when another was asked, Bourelle threatened to remove residents from the room if they didn’t behave.

As Mayor Bourelle called for the start of the official question period, a woman asked why the city doesn’t follow Baie d’Urfé’s example and have two by-laws, so that during certain hours dogs are allowed to run free. When Bourelle replied that the city will not change its existing by-law, the woman said, “I’d like to know why.”

“Because, that’s the by-law, it’s been there for a long time,” Bourelle replied. “We are liable for a lawsuit should a dog bite someone in that area. We’ll continue to apply it until the dog park is there.»

Councillor Peggy Alexopoulos said the city started enforcing its leash by-law in the Luger Triangle, “because the phone calls had been getting more and more frequent with all the pit bull attacks and all the me-

That being said, Tiffin readily concedes that Private Lives is full of challenges to direct. “Comedy is the hardest theatre work to direct, by far,” he said. “Timing, rhythm, and sight gags are all very difficult. On top of that, we’re working in period (1930), so there’s an extra layer of style to work with. Then there are British accents.

And, of course, the actors playing roles of the opposite gender is very difficult.

The whole show is difficult to direct but hey, if it were easy, what would be the point? Working with challenging material keeps us getting better and growing!”

As council voted unanimously to award G. Daviault Ltée a $68,755.05 contract to install a fence for the dog park, dog owners gathered on the sidewalk outside town hall.

“They haven’t built their fence but they’re ticketing people,” said Lorie Marcotte.

“This attitude is the first time I’ve seen him (Mayor Bourelle) like that,” said Adriana Flores, who participated in question period. “He’s not even listening to us,” echoed Véronique Beniak, who also asked a question.

“We’re a little community, Beaconsfield,” Beniak said, adding “It’s not over, I’m writing him.”

The second edition of the K9 Sport Fest will take place July 16 and 17 at the Maxville Fair Grounds in Maxville, Ontario. Following the success of the first edition in 2015, the organizers aim to follow the guidelines of the original festival, but will also add other activities to the program this year.

Last year’s edition drew approximately 500 competitors from as far away as Toronto. “The festival was very well received,” says Erika Anderson, the festival’s founder. “The community was excited, and all the competitors loved the venue. It was well organized, and everyone had a great time.” Last year the event welcomed approximately 1000 spectators on Saturday and 500 on a rainy Sunday.

The dog community has been buzzing about the event and the organizers expect an even larger number of competitors and spectators this year.

K9 Sport may not be something

the general public immediately recognizes as a «sport» but it has widespread appeal and popularity among dog owners. It is also not limited to professional dog handlers. “K9 Sport is good to build a relationship between you and your dog. It’s also a good hobby and activity,” Erika says.

Not every activity is physical, but something like Frisbee throwing will involve athletic skills. The variety of activities is part of the appeal since pretty much any dog owner can participate. “Some dog owners with no experience can try out events such as Frisbee throwing, jumping, and other activities that rely on your dog’s instincts.” The only sports that require previous training are Agility and Flyball. “K9 Sport Fest is a celebration of the sporting community,” Erika says.

“It’s also created to introduce people to dog sports that don’t know anything about it.”

Erika feels very strongly about the ethical treatment of animals in any sporting events featuring animals.

“We believe that a dog with a job is

a happy dog,» Erika says. «If you and your dog get involved in an activity, it gives your dog a purpose. It’s good for their brain’s stimulation and it also does the same things for their owners.”

Erika feels that an event such as K9 Sport Fest is a good place to start for any dog owner interested in that type of activity. “There are eight different types of sports (during the event) that are accepting all types of breeds. So you can come watch, or even try out any of the events to give you an idea of what is out there.” From that point, you can move on by getting in touch with the clubs that are hosting the event and move forward. Each of the

canine clubs attending the festival is hosting one event and representatives from the club will be on hand to greet competitors.

The K9 Sport Fest is a must-see for all dog owners and enthusiasts. “It’s a lot of fun. A lot of barking,” Erika says laughing.

The K9 Sport Fest will take place July 16 and 17 at the Maxville Fair Grounds (35 Fair Street, Maxville, Ontario), about an hour away from Hudson. The event is open to the public.
