Welcome to season fourteen! Tulsa Symphony believes MORE is always better when it comes to great music, and one look at the 2019-2020 season is sound proof of our commitment! Classics fans will enjoy six classics concerts in the PAC beginning with the extraordinary violin artistry of Rachel Barton Pine on Opening Night, bookended by the elegant annual gala and private party immediately following Ms. Pine’s riveting performance. In November there’s MORE with two opportunities to experience the brilliance of pianist Robin Sutherland as he interprets Mozart with TSO on the main stage. One week later, he joins clarinetist Carlos Ortega and other musical friends to offer an intimate and eloquent chamber music experience as an add-on to the popular Fridays in the Loft chamber series. (Better get your tickets early- this series has been sold out for the past two seasons!) Tulsa Symphony’s thrilling live soundtrack tradition continues in the spring with the Tulsa premiere of Star Wars in Concert, leading to the amazing season finale featuring legendary musical storyteller Arlo Guthrie. The 2019-2020 season of MORE kicks off outdoors at Guthrie Green for September’s First Friday in the Tulsa Arts District. This fun event is our gift to Tulsa for your wonderful support! Guest artist Robin Sutherland (San Francisco Symphony) joins Tulsa Symphony led by Daniel Hege to perform Mozart’s overtly dramatic piano Concerto in C Minor. The wonderful string interplay of Berlioz’s Beatrice and Benedict Overture and Lutoslawski’s elaborate and melodic Concerto for Orchestra round out the evening’s program, providing a kaleidoscope of passion, angst, and lively musical action.

Lush and ornate, this program is a rainbow of shimmering orchestral color, featuring JS Bach’s Fantasia and Fugue in C Minor, orchestrated by Edward Elgar, Richard Strauss’ autumnal Four Last Songs featuring acclaimed soprano Sarah Coburn, and the tragically expressive Symphony No. 2 by Robert Schumann. Daniel Hege conducts the orchestra in this unmissable concert.

In celebration of the 2020 Summer Olympics, this program commences with the sonic olympiad that is Michael Torke’s effervescent Javelin.
Praised by the New York Times for his “alluring, colorfully shaded renditions,” guest artist Sean Chen performs Grieg’s lyrical Piano Concerto. The evening concludes with Mozart’s majestic Symphony No. 39. Guest conductor Leslie Dunner takes the podium.

Since the release of the first Star Wars movie over 40 years ago, the Star Wars saga has had a seismic impact on both cinema and culture, inspiring audiences around the world with its mythic storytelling, captivating characters, groundbreaking special effects and iconic musical scores composed by John Williams. Legendary composer Williams is well known for scoring all eight of the Star Wars saga films to date, beginning with 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope for which he earned an Academy Award® for Best Original Score. In Star Wars: A New Hope, a young Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) begins to discover his destiny when, searching for a lost droid, he is saved by reclusive Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness). A civil war rages in the galaxy, and Rebel forces struggle against the evil Galactic Empire, Luke and Obi-Wan enlist the aid of hotshot pilot, Han Solo (Harrison Ford). Joined by the quirky droid duo R2-D2 and C-3PO, the unlikely team sets out to rescue Rebel leader Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and make use of the stolen plans to destroy the Empire’s ultimate weapon. In a legendary confrontation, the rogue group mounts an attack against the Death Star for a climactic battle with the evil Sith Lord Darth Vader. Fans will love experiencing this beloved film in a live symphonic concert experience! Tickets start at $35.

An icon of the 1960’s counterculture generation, American folk artist Arlo Guthrie is known for both his social activism and the powerful storytelling exemplified in his music, including hits such as “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” “Coming into Los Angeles,” and “The Motorcycle Song.” Growing up Guthrie, Arlo was surrounded by such renowned artists as Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Ronnie Gilbert, and various other folk greats. Arlo drew from these influences and brought folk music to the next generation. Arlo will perform a variety of original material and cover songs accompanied by the full orchestra. Ron Spigelman conducts.
