Cultivate Kansas City Resilience Center A resilient neighborhood’s community center located in Kansas City, MO. Downtown Kansas city is a food desert meaning there is a huge lack of both healthy and affordable foods. Cultivate Kansas City Resilience Center engages the youth of Kansas City by giving a diverse group of youth the ability to instill change in their community. This is activated by the urban farm and farming education center on site. The two buildings running parallel created an opportunity for an open market space in the middle connecting the community to the urban farm. The community center houses a cafe, an exhibition space, an auditorium, a library, classrooms, office space and is linked to the farming education center by a bridge. This project aims to activate the people of Kansas City and create change.

URBANbuild18

Project created in partnership with Malia Bavuso The URBANbuild program tasks students to develop affordable housing prototypes with an analysis of New Orleans culture and community needs. Our program is partnered with Bethlehem Lutheran Church to create an affordable house where someone living with AIDS will be housed. The fall semester, pairs of students are tasked with designing a scheme for a competition. Once the winning scheme is selected, our cohort acts as a firm to create a permit set to submit to the city for approval to build the following semester. Malia Bavuso and I created this runner up design.

This project was designed in relation to URBANbuild 17, a home built by the previous years student and situated on the street front. This project is created directly behind the existing home. Design inspiration and consideration for the roof slope, shutter system, and materiality were pulled from the existing project.

Addis Ababa River City Project created in partnership with Fiona Alicandri Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has rapidly evolved from a small military outpost to a sprawling metropolis. The population has doubled to around 4 million and counting in recent years. This unprecedented demographic boom has brought not only uncontrolled urbanization of the city, but it is also testing the administration’s ability to provide basic services to the population: water and waste management, specifically. If these urban issues are not addressed in the present, climate change, with significant temperature increases, severe droughts, and substantial flooding events will exacerbate the already present issues.

29 This master plan intervention focused on a 90 acre branch condition in a flood prone zone. This project focused on restoring connectivity throughout the site, resorting ecology, creating a flood zones that work to benefit the landscape and centralize the flooding as well as new housing for those living in informal settlements. Cleaning the river was the main priority of the project due to the heavily polluted river streaming through the agriculture and contaminating food and land of the people in Addis Ababa. The master plan proposal was titled layers of opportunity and focused on a multi step approach to restore the site of Peacock Park. River meanders were created to slow the river and create controlled flooding. A water cleaning layer was added for water to get sent to sedimentation, treatment, and purification. Agriculture created another buffer from the river and housing and allowed the citizens to grow and sell clean food. Markets were created for the purpose of selling the agriculture produced. New homes were added and at-risk homes were re-located to be safe from flooding. Slow mobility paths connect the outer community in and around the site. Finally, community centers and public space were added to engage the community and create a safe and clean place to gather.

Making Memories and Letting Go Project created in partnership with Camille Kreisel What is the role of an architect in the making of the image of a city? This seminar explored how designers and architects can intervene in the making, re-making, and image of New Orleans through the design of a souvenir. My partner, Camille and I focused on the once iconic Dew Drop Inn. We documented the original and current state of the building, and then translated them into 3D reliefs on a medallion. Our final souvenir product consisted of Mardi Gras beads.

Dew Drop Inn was started in 1938 by Frank Painia as a barbershop, restaurant, hotel, lounge, and nightclub. It quickly became a hub for Black culture and society through its role as part of the Chitlin Circuit, a collection of performance venues through the South, East, and Midwest regions of the US. Dew Drop was a welcoming community for Black musicians during the 1940s-1960s, and eventually closed following Painia’s death in 1972. Painia’s family continued to use the building after Dew Drop closed, but after the building was badly damaged after Hurricane Katrina, it has been abandoned since. Dew Drop is expected to reopen this year as a 17 room boutique hotel and music venue.

Vals Youth Hostel Mintz Global Research Studio In response to the 381m tall “transparent tower” designed by Morphosis, our studio sought to reframe the failed international competition for a skyscraper in Vals, Switzerland. We focused on the question: How can architecture pay homage to the vernacular architecture of a location while ensuring social, environmental, and cultural success? Vals Youth Hostel is a short walk away from the Therme Vals. This hostel is tucked behind the 7132 complex nestled in the forest. This building targets a needed program in Vals due to the expensive hotel rooms in the 7132 complex and lack of hostels in and around Vals. This hostel is a part of the Swiss Youth Hostel Program and is the perfect place for groups and guests looking to ski, hike, adventure the therme, and explore the wonderful activities throughout Vals.
