Herschend Residence atlanta, ga
DESIGN STATEMENT: As you enter the residence, a garden entrance creates a transition from the motor court and guest parking into the front door. Detailed garden gates are placed on either side of the house. A more formal garden with a strong central axis is found on the left side of the house, under the master bedroom. The view is direct from the garden entrance through to the lower garden. This lower garden transitions into the pool area and then into the side open lawn. Overall, I wanted to keep a simple planting plan, focusing more on texture over color, with a few pops of color here and there. Overall, planting and elements are inspired by an English garden. Axis points are heavily emphasized in order to keep views interesting, keep visitors moving from space to space and maintain a simple circulation and flow.

PLANTING PLAN
02 Farmstead Community
chattahoochee hills, ga
The goal of this project was to create a true rural community and focus on what we see as rural. When I think of rural design, I envision open spaces, rolling hills, and wooden fences. I think of long views and picturesque images. In terms of this site, I wanted to keep a rather simple layout. The one road in this community is a loop, allowing simple circulation. The existing barns and pasture remains, with the addition of a community building and pavilion allowing use from residents as a gathering space. For planting, I imagine a meadow and a feeling of overgrowth and wildness. Houses are placed to balance privacy and that feeling of naturalness.

03 Firefly Trail athens, ga

The Firefly Trailhead in Athens, Georgia, aims to be a vibrant and inviting gateway to the Firefly Trail, seamlessly providing an enticing and welcoming environment for all passing by. The design prioritizes a colorful planting design with the intention of native plants being the dominant vegetation. Additionally, the plan includes areas to rest before or after the trail as well as areas of designated outdoor seating for the surrounding apartments and residents. Overall, the plan aims to create a harmonious relationship between the built environment and the nature of the trail to follow.

04 Miller Learning Center athens, ga
Located in the heart of the University of Georgia’s campus, the Miller Learning Center is a hub of student activity. With this in mind, this redesign aims to create an area to accommodate the multiple purposes of academia as well as implement various sculptures and art installations to add to the art scene on the University’s campus. This predominantly radial design focuses on pathway placement in order to deal with student traffic during the week as well as the herds of football fans on the weekends. In addition, the site has various strategically placed seating areas allowing students to enjoy the outdoors in a comfortable fashion. Multitudes of hardscape types as well as colorful planting serve to add a richness to the space.

Galleria Del Tramonto
at Fortezza Del Girifalco cortona, italy
Settled in the hills of Tuscany, Cortona holds a historic landmark at the peak of its elevation, Fortezza Del Girifalco which offers arguably the most incredible sights of the city and landscapes below. Serving as an artist gallery, the space sets out to integrate the rich history of art in Cortona back into the community and public eye, since fading in recent years. Priority of this design rests in merging the original forms into a modern design to create a space to combine the time periods. Many forms used reflect the irregular configurations of the walls of the main fort, granting the site a more cohesive feel. An emphasis lies on the balance of the natural overgrowth of native plants in coexistence with a newly built landscape.

Italian Photography Study cortona, italy
While studying abroad in Italy, I had the opportunity to explore another one of my passions, photography. Besides my landscape architecture studio, I participated in a photography class that allowed me to capture some memorable sights. Capturing these moments involves a keen eye and quickly analyzing visual elements, both translate to beneficial skills for design. This opportunity provided me with a holistic set of skills that certainly complements my landscape architecture skills, offering a unique perspective on spatial design.

LIGHT AND SHADOW

Photography often revolves around playing with light and shadow to create mood and emphasis. This knowledge can be valuable in landscape architecture, where the interplay of light and shadow influences the perception of outdoor spaces.

CONNECTIONS TO NATURE

During my time abroad I traveled to the Dolomites in Italy’s northern region where the weekend was spent in pure nature. This connection deepened my appreciation for natural environments, influencing my landscape architecture designs to be more sustainable, contextually aware, and harmonious with the surrounding landscapes.

Condensed Resume
EDUCATION
Before I ever heard the term “landscape architecture” I found myself drawn toward natural as well as designed outdoor spaces. I feel inspired by the intricate connection of landforms, vegetation, water, ecology, space, and design that combine to create a place. I feel the beauty of the landscape lies not only in aesthetic appeal but also in its ability to evoke emotions and tell a story. The interdisciplinary approach challenges me to think holistically and consider the long term impacts of my own designs on both the environment and the community it serves. Throughout my journey with landscape architecture thus far, I have developed a true and deep appreciation for my natural world. Moving forward, I hope to grow into a steward of the natural environment, not only shaping beautiful and aesthetically pleasing spaces, but also those that foster sustainability and deep connections between people and their surroundings.
