Interior Design Studio I Fall 2022 Interior Strategies and Systems
The interior strategies and systems project focused on using external research, Rhino 7 digital modeling, and physical modeling to analyze an existing residential structure for its spatial qualities. For this project, The Federal House in Federal, Australia was chosen due to the unique void space in the center of the structure and the natural ventilation system built around a subterranean pool. The Federal House by Edition Office architects was designed to accomodate a smaller family who would like an “ongoing experience of a particular time and place.” (1) The intentions of the site location and materiality were to create a peaceful sanctuary for clients to escape their daily routines. This house was also designed to be a sculptural object dug into the hilly landscape. “At distance, the building is recessive, a shadow within the vast landscape”, Edition Office mentions. The highly textured exterior allows for the organic landscape to drive the connection with physical human intimacy and create that sanctuary esscence. The home is unique in that it uses a verandah to allow for the expansion and contraction of the interior. “The deep verandah space allows for a shadow gradient to emerge between inner and outer thresholds, enhancing the sense of sanctuary from the surroundings and its variable weather conditions. It allows one to be outside in torrential rain and avoid the burning midday sun.” (1) Sliding glass doors featured around the main living spaces give residents the option to be open to the elements or sealed off. A distinguishing element of the lower level of the home would be the subterranean pool. This pool is “linked to a planted void in the heart of the home...All spaces are naturally ventilated with air drawn across the cooler pool surface and into the upper surrounding verandah spaces, helping to stabilize the ambient temperature throughout the home.” (1) The natural ventilation is supported by ceiling fans for hotter days and a fireplace for cooler. Creative Interiors for Creatives
8
The Creative Interiors for Creatives project focused on designing a space for an artist of the student’s choosing with a limitation of the given existing structure. The workflow of this project includes preliminary research, coming up with the artist’s persona, finding inspiration images, creating a tailored space for the artist to work and reside in, and finally making a material board. The persona chosen for this project was a food photographer and stylist. A main necessity for this artist is a flexible, and wide open space for the manipulation of furniture and props for photo opportunities. This is reflected in the open and large floor plan of the main level, as well as the neutral materiality of the main space for any kind of photo background. A small office and storage space was included on the second level to give the artist more workspace without interferring with her personal space. A large sliding barn door is featured on the main level, serving as a barrier between her private bedroom space and the work areas to give the artist that balance between personal life and work. Aperature systems featured around the space include large, arched windows allowing ample natural light to enter the space, without leaving harsh shadows from the window shape. The natural light coming in from the windows also compliment the work the artist does by giving accurate color temperatures to make the photos realistic and desirable to clients.

Interior Design Studio II Spring 2023 Italian Spatial Pastiche
This project focused on precedent studies of different Italian historical sites and their unique spatial systems. By combining selected spatial conditions around a selected artist, the final project was formulated into a working and showcasing space. This space is built around a horticulture artist who cultivates, propogates, and presents the natural beauty of plants as an art form. The artist requires three main spaces for their needs which include, a lab, a greenhouse, and an outdoor garden. Circulation of this horticulturist includes bouncing between all of these spaces as they perform research and care activities for their plants. Public circulation of this space is not strictly defined, but rather each individual performs a unique meandering path throughout the lower level. Aperature systems are limited on the lower level due to lab space and the technology inside. On the upper level, aperature is crucial, as much natural light is entering the outdoor garden space as well as the glass greenhouse. As for materials used in the project, the lower level consists of materials that evoke a dense and heavy feeling, whereas the upper level evokes an light and airy feeling. This ultimately creates a focal point of the project at the central and upper greenhouse, emphasizing the artist’s passion for plants. Program elements in the design mainly feature organic materials and greenery, contribuiting to the overall vision and bringing a sense of life and growth to those who visit this space. Additionally, the live greenery invites visitors to enjoy a tactile and immersive experience while learning about the artist’s work and passions.

Interior Design Studio II Spring 2023 Soak. Steam. Dream. This modern take on an ancient Roman bathhouse revolves around the division of program spaces, material strategies defining those moments, and aperature systems unifying the elements together. A central focus incorporated into the design establishes a natural flow of circulation within the two levels and provides continuity of light throughout the space. Different circulation paths are created with children and family spaces residing on the ground floor, and adult spaces mainly occupying the upper levels. Slatted wood walls define these destination zones of adult program spaces and serve as barriers for more privacy. Through a selective material and color palette, this design maintains a whimsical and playful aesthetic which helps accentuate program spaces and help guide circulation.

Interior Design Studio III Fall 2023 C+J Exhibition Space
14
This studio project was about doing research in biophilic design, analyzing an outdoor space of our choice, and designing a space emulating our chosen space while considering biophilic design. The site for this project was The Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York, NY. The C+J exhibition is inspired by my Grandparent’s farm, and would be held from June-September 2024 at The Storefront for Art and Architecture. First when you enter the space, you are greeted with terraces abundant with plants, and walls covered in barn wood simulating what it is like on their farm. The second space you enter is sheer textiles hanging from the ceiling emulating clouds and making guests in the space experience the importance of rain in farming. The third space is a communal area allowing guests to experience planting crops, and eventually getting to take that piece home with them reminding them of how much farmers provide for the world today. The final space is a bakery and cafe space inspired by my Grandma’s kitchen where we would make lots of baked goods growing up. Overall, when coming to C+J’s you get to experience my personal views of my Grandparent’s farm while discovering and learning about the importance of farming in todays communities.
