TED TALK NOTES PERSONAL BRANDING Selling a vision Engage people with your leadership Selling an idea, system, methodology, concept, argument, opinion, above all no1 thing were selling, is ourselves People buy people If I get to know you and like you and trust you then I will buy from you You want other people to promote you, How do we stand out? Be a student of selling yourself notice what makes you stand out and what doesn’t It all sounds the same!!! “Sameness sucks” “It takes a lifetime to build a good reputation and a second to destroy it” 4 things that you can do to sell yourself and stand out: 3.Work with your red box Create a grey box- its bland, if you look and sound the same as everyone else, they will go to the cheapest most convenient they can find- we need a red box. What is it that makes me unique? What is it that they would find it difficult to copy? Your red box starts when your born, we build with your character, your character is what you stand for, your value, your principle, your core. You grow learn and build experience. They are unique to you, when you start to speak about things everyone else is talking about, you are in the grey box. You need to stand out to be in the red box. The skills, the talent, different DNA and talents. Fight different battles in different ways. Your knowledge/expertise. When you talk more general terms, it’s blander, build on your character, train and get good at it, then you will get your personal brand. The way you walk, talk look, dress sense, business card, website. Finally, your reputation, what people think when they interact with your personal brand. If you can talk about what’s in the red box and your uniqueness you’ve got a chance to stand out. Concentrate on the red box! Build a network and a reputation. Bigger your network bigger your reputation. Talking to people and having conversation. Your richest recourses will always be your richest relationships. Build that network and dig that well before you’re thirsty. Raise your profile, think and write! Blog, book, presentation, share your ideas and raise your profile. Be authentic! If you try to be someone else, you only get a hybrid of what you want to be. Don’t try to imitate someone else, you might be good at the someone else, but you’ll be great at yourself (Talks, 2017)
TED TALK NOTES KEITH KHAN HARRIS-SUBCULTURES Small worlds, communities, scenes, subcultures Small worlds are spaces to which people devote their lives, to which they find meaning, they’re often obscure, they’re millions of them, aside from family and friends in the workplace, they constitute one of the main areas where life is lived I find commonalities between communities Small worlds are powerful They demonstrate the power of small Where something is wrong, something is too big Small is beautiful, smallness is human, smallness is liveable Small worlds in contrast represent the hope of diversity, of hedonist, of difference But yet, they are also have certain in common Passion Commitment The power of togetherness The power of being something bigger than yourself Belonging, community They’ve achieved more that they’d have achieved on their own Small worlds aren’t always wonderful places; conflict, stress, Hierarchy, power, conservatism (Kahn-Harris, 2012)a
