Decoupage & Decorate

FitLit: Walking Book Discussion Club

Transform a wooden pumpkin using patterned paper and decoupage into the perfect addition to your fall decor. Pick up materials for this festive craft in the library lobby.

Walk with us around College Park Drive as we discuss what we’ve been reading. Share about a book, article or magazine you’ve read, or just join in to hear recommendations from others. We’ll meet on the sidewalk in front of our main entrance, walk to the park for some laps, and return to the library. Watch social media for weather related changes.

American Aquarium: Online Concert

This October (Date to be announced online.)

Location: Online NO REGISTRATION Formed in Raleigh, North Carolina, American Aquarium has worked with producers like Jason Isabel and Shooter Jennings to capture their raw energy. The band is led by the front-man and songwriter, B.J. Barham.

“As a songwriter, my number one job is to observe and then translate what I observe into a song, a story, a lesson,” Barham says. American Aquarium is a hungry band with an active touring schedule that’s taken them around the world and now to the Laurel County Public Library.

Quaker City Night Hawks’ brand of hard rock n’ roll is bred from Texas boogie, Memphis soul and heavy blues. Their music is southern rock right out of ‘75, played with the fervor of a sermon crackling out of the radio in a ‘68 Lincoln.

They’re the whiskey bottle you finished Saturday night and the prayer you said the next morning.

Quaker City Night Hawks are the spirit of rock n’ roll. Come shake your hips to the songs Rolling Stone proclaimed, “fly in the face of mainstream rules.”

Kody West: Online Concert Thursday, October 21st • 7pm Location: Online NO REGISTRATION

Soon after releasing his first EP, Kody West and his band quickly found themselves gaining a large following of loyal fans, headlining shows and serving as supporting act for Whiskey Myers and Koe Wetzel.

Kody’s drive for touring and live shows keeps the wheels always turning and the band always working. Kody’s music is a mix of Texas Country and Bluegrass with some good-for-the-soul grooves.

This month’s selection is Writers & Lovers by Lily King.

The book club will be held via Zoom. Copies of the book are available on Hoopla, in both e-book and e-audiobook formats.

True Crime: Douglas Daniel Clark Tuesday, October 26th • 6-7pm Location: Online NO REGISTRATION

Douglas Daniel Clark is an American serial killer. Clark and his accomplice, Carol M. Bundy, were collectively known as the Sunset Strip Killers. They were convicted of a variety of murders in Los Angeles, California.

Halloween Jars

Spooky season is here! Get in the Halloween spirit by sharing some spooky art, whether it’s a jack-o-lantern, a ghost, or a haunted house. Share your spooky masterpiece by posting it up on the display board.

Get in the spooky spirit this Halloween with these jars!

Design your own jar to look like a pumpkin, candy corn, or a monster to use for decoration. You can fill it with candy, pencils, or use it as a lantern. It’s a great addition for the Halloween season. Grab your to-go kit in the Children’s Department.

Bring your camping chairs and join us for a fun, classic comedy film. Starting at 7pm we’ll have games, treats, and more for everyone to enjoy while you wait for the sun to go down!

After the members of a team of scientists (Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray) lose their cushy positions at a university in New York City, they decide to become “ghostbusters” to wage a high-tech battle with the supernatural for money. They stumble upon a gateway to another dimension, a doorway that will release evil upon the city. The Ghostbusters must now save New York from complete destruction. This movie is rated PG.

Who’s ready for a spooktacular Trick-or-Reading drive-thru? Come ready to gather up lots of goodies that the library staff will be handing out under our canopies! We’ll have creepy decorations, fun costumes, and the best part is: you don’t even have to get out of your vehicle! Simply drive-up and we’ll hand you what you need!

This makes the event as low-contact as possible for the health and safety of our community.

Count Dracula runs a hotel where all of the monsters can come and get away from it all. When Dracula’s daughter Mavis turns 18, he decides to throw her a huge birthday party at the hotel with all of their monster friends present. Hilarious complications arise when a human boy discovers the hotel and falls for the Count’s daughter! This movie is rated PG.

You can now find us inside the library in our front lobby handing out craft kits to all of our friends. Check our Facebook or Instagram on Mondays to see what this week’s craft is going to be!

Kits will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis and available while supplies last. Limit one per person.

Animal Skeleton Reveal Cards

Saturday, October 2nd • 11am-1pm Location: Kid’s Area (Take-Home Activity) NO REGISTRATION Bones, Bones and more Bones! These fun Scratch ‘N Reveal cards start as images of skeletons, but reveal the animals underneath. This is a fun way to help kids learn about the skeletal system of animals!

Experiment with color mixing while making a cute Halloween pumpkin. Kids will love mixing red and yellow paint together using their hands. This messfree sensory activity is a great way to create an awesome Jack-O-Lantern!

The scarily funny Sam the Turtle, Mr. Barry, and Hyena the Chicken will be performing for the Laurel County Public Library! It’s magic, stories, and puppets for a Hall-O-Weeny good time!

Young at Art: A Selection of Caldecott Book Illustrations October 21st - November 30th

Through picture books, readers embark on visual journeys that engage all of the senses and encourage curious, imaginative, and thoughtful interactions with the world around them. The exhibition Young at Art: A Selection of Caldecott Book Illustrations includes original illustrations from Caldecott Medal recipients and from “runner-up” Honor books, as well as other illustrations by award-winning artists.

This exhibition of works from Wichita Falls Museum of Art’s permanent collection celebrates the vision and talent of twenty-eight award-winning artists, including the first Caldecott Award recipient Dorothy P. Lathrop (1938), two-time winner Chris Van Allsburg (1982, 1986), and Maurice Sendak (1964), whose work Where the Wild Things Are, like Van Allsburg’s Jumanji and The Polar Express, was adapted for the big screen. These illustrations are widely recognized not only as artistic classics in children’s literature but also as the source of countless beloved memories for the young and young at heart.
