Bite Size Learning: Migraines Wednesday, June 19th • 12-1pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED (Deadline: June 17th at 12pm)

Bite Size Learning is an educational, free lunch series brought to you by CHI Saint Joseph Health.

Dr. Alam Khan of CHI Saint Joseph Health will discuss the causes, management, and treatment options for migraines and other types of headaches.

A brief question/answer period will follow the program.

Jodi Picoult’s Small Great Things tackles the topic of racism in this courtroom drama. Ruth, an African American nurse, is forced to defend her actions while trying to save the life of a baby born to white supremacist parents. *Starting in July, look for our new book club named “Bookmarked.” We think you’re going to love it!

Mah Jongg

Thursday, June 13th • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION Similar to the Western game of rummy, Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. Experienced players, see if the tiles fall your way during a fun evening of play.

Wednesday Matinee Movie: The Upside Wednesday, June 19th • 1:30-3:30pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION APPRECIATED

This PG-13 rated film is a comedic look at the relationship between a wealthy quadriplegic and an unemployed man with a criminal record who is hired to help him. The stellar cast includes Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston, and Nicole Kidman.

Murder by the Book

Thursday, June 20th • 6-7pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION This month we’ll discuss Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin. Two friends from two different worlds must come together to solve a murder and the issues from their past.

What do you get when you blend Appalachian Folk, Americana, and Country Rock? An evening of solid grooves, complex guitar progressions, and fierce fiddling. Combine this with influences of Jason Isbell, Lynyrd Skynyrd, John Prine, and James Taylor and you’re in for an evening you won’t soon forget!

Writers’ Ink

True Crime Cases

If you’re interested in improving your writing skills and finding other writers to share ideas and techniques with, then come to the Laurel County Public Library for this month’s writers’ group meeting.

Associate Professor Amanda Morris from Somerset Community College will facilitate the session.

This month we’ll be discussing the West Memphis Three. The group was comprised of a trio of men, who while teenagers, were convicted of the 1993 murders of three boys in West Memphis, Arkansas. Check our blog and register to receive information on the case before the discussion.

Interlibrary Loans Looking for an out-of-print or hard-to-find book or audiobook? Let our reference staff see if your request can be borrowed from another library through our Interlibrary Loan service.

The way it works is you fill out a form giving us as much information about the item you want. We then search through a database of libraries across the country who are willing to let us borrow materials. Once we receive your item, simply stop by the front desk and pick it up. It’s just that easy!

Portraiture Workshop for Adults Thursday, June 27th • 6-8pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Artist-in-Residence Amy-Beth Rice, from Memphis, TN, will lead this workshop where participants will learn how to paint portraits. Attendees will also leave with a portrait painting of their own creation.

Intuitive Art Workshop for Adults Friday, June 28th • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Artist-in-Residence Amy-Beth Rice, from Memphis, TN, will lead this workshop where she will guide participants through the same process she uses to create her own work. She will teach attendees how to use their own artistic voice, choose colors, and to understand the meaning of their artwork.

TECHNOLOGY CLASSES The Laurel County Public Library offers a wide range of technology classes to help you develop and improve the skills that are so important in the digital age.

With different topics being taught each month, a knowledgeable staff, and hands-on learning, there’s sure to be something we can help you with. Participants must have a library card, valid email address, and be 18+ to participate.

Kanopy Video Streaming Service

Let’s get your account set up! All you’ll need is your library card number and your password/pin.

E-Reader

Ride with RTEC! Free transportation is available for designated programs by calling the library and scheduling what time you’d like to be picked up and brought to the library and what time you’d like to arrive back at home.

Your trip to and from the library will be covered so you’ll be on your way to enjoying all the library offers.

Look for the RTEC symbol to see which programs qualify for transportation.

Transportation for other library services is available as scheduling permits.

All arrangements MUST be made 48 hours prior to the time you wish to visit the library to allow for scheduling.

Friday, June 28th • 11am-1pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION Migo is a Yeti who lives high above in the frozen clouds. He’s convinced that a human known only as “Small Foot” is real. Join Migo as he sets out on an exciting adventure to find out if humans exist and prove himself to his tribe. This movie is rated PG.

Babygarten: Designed for children up to age 3, this program provides a basic understanding of child development, while providing an engaging time for children and caregivers!

Ready to Read: This interactive storytime is designed for preschool aged children, and focuses on building cognitive, social, physical, and early literacy skills.

Readers are Leaders: Geared for school aged students, this program provides a time to discuss books, play games, and participate in exciting hands-on activities.

ON DISPLAY Amy-Beth Rice June 10th-27th

Originally from Springfield, Missouri, Amy-Beth Rice received her BFA and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees from Memphis College of Art and is currently based in Memphis, TN. Her work has been featured in group and solo shows in Midwest and Midsouth galleries such as GLITCH, Crosstown Arts, Caritas Village, the Hi-Tone, Bethel University, Midtown Crossing Grill, and the Hyde Gallery.

Amy has collaborated with UrbanArts, MemFix, and Borderless Arts to host workshops and create community murals with area youth as well as corporations, such as Hilton. In addition to working as a professional artist and teaching at Memphis College of Art in the evenings, AmyBeth returned to the classroom in 2018 to teach in an artsbased magnet high school.

This exhibit is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Laurel County Public Library.

AROUND THE LIBRARY Thank You Peggy

Please join us in extending our best wishes to Peggy Mershon on the announcement of her retirement as Director from the library.

For over sixteen years she’s been instrumental in bringing a wide variety of programs, implementing the Friends of the Library organization, and overseeing the expansion of the library. Outside of the library, she’s worked with many local civic organizations such as Rotary, and served in various capacities of the Kentucky Public Library Association.

Peggy’s steady leadership as our Director has allowed the library to grow and develop new ventures, bringing exciting opportunities to the residents of Laurel County. We’re very grateful for her years of hard work and dedication to the library. We’ll miss Peggy but we’re eager to see what she does as she moves onto a new chapter of her life.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to introduce Leah Rudder as the new Interim Director. Leah has been employed by the library for fourteen years and served as Preschool Programmer, Adult Programmer, Children’s Librarian, and most recently Programs and Promotions Manager.

London’s Living Treasures: Ten Under Forty Award We’d like to congratulate Leah Rudder on being recognized along with nine other young leaders in our community whose contributions are helping shape Laurel County into one of the best places to live.

Leah’s career at the library has always been focused on exceeding the expectations of what the public expects from a library with fun and engaging programming for both children and adults.

Kentucky Public Library Association: Fresh Faces Award We’d also like to congratulate Susan Fawbush on being recognized along with seven other library staffers across the state of Kentucky.

Along with her work with the Friends of the Library, Susan has a keen interest in our special needs population and has instigated a number of programs to focus on this often overlooked segment of our population.

Along with presenting a monthly program at a local adult daycare facility, Susan has developed a range of programs at the library for this population to attend and enjoy.

As a result of Susan’s work, we believe many of the caregivers feel the library is a place where these special adults can visit and feel a part of a group, not outsiders where they don’t fit in. While Susan is welcoming to all, it’s obvious she has a soft spot for this special population and we’re lucky to have her as part of our team.
