2018 Veterans Project: Our Veterans, Their Stories Monday, November 5th • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION

Join us as we premiere the 2018 edition of “Our Veterans, Their Stories.” This film focuses on the personal stories of local veterans who share with us how the military has changed their lives. The veterans’ stories are intertwined as experiences are revealed, photos are shown, and history is delivered through the voices of those who served.

The Great American Read Book Series: Session 3 Thursday, November 1st • 6-7:30pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED

The Great American Read is an educational and community outreach campaign developed by PBS. It is designed to get the country reading and talking about books. From the 100 suggested titles, this series will explore and discuss books representing three different genres.

Session three will be facilitated by Rob Spencer from Somerset Community College, and will focus on George Orwell’s classic 1984. Prior to each session, a limited number of books will be available for check out at the Circulation Desk while supplies last.

Mah Jongg

Tuesday, November 6th • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION Similar to the Western game of rummy, Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. Experienced players, see if the tiles fall your way during a fun evening of play. If you’ve never played, please contact us before attending.

TED Talk: Changing the Way We See Native Americans Tuesday, November 6th • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED

The opening event for the Native Voices exhibit sponsored by the American Library Association and the U.S. National Library of Medicine, will include a viewing of the TED Talk: “Changing the Way We See Native Americans” that features renowned Native American and photographer Matika Wilbur who has photographed citizens of each of the 566 federally recognized tribes in the U.S. Following the viewing, participants will join in an informal, open discussion led by Somerset Community College Associate Professor Melinda Allen.

Cumberland Gallery Photography Show November 9th-11th Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION

Cumberland Valley National Bank and the Laurel County Public Library are pleased to be co-sponsoring the 2018 Cumberland Gallery Photography Show for adults and youth. Application forms will be available at CVNB locations, the Laurel County Public Library, and on the library website at laurellibrary.org.

Entries will be taken during regular library hours from Monday, October 29th through Tuesday, November 6th. Entries will not be accepted after 8pm on Tuesday, November 6th.

Cumberland Gallery Photography Show Opening Reception Thursday, November 8th • 5-7pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION

Photographers and the general public are encouraged to attend the opening reception for the 2018 CVNB Photography Show when the category winners and Best of Show winner will be revealed. Adult and youth entries will both be on display.

Alzheimer’s Association: Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body Friday, November 9th • 11am-12pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED

In honor of Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Association is offering a program to learn about research in the areas of diet, nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity, social engagement, and how to incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging.

London Community Orchestra Monday, November 12th • 6-7pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION

To celebrate the London Community Orchestra and to promote the upcoming season, musicians from the orchestra will present an evening of music. This informal program will feature a variety of musical styles, and will be performed by orchestra members as soloists and in small ensembles.

Small Steps Big Rewards: Diabetes

Pursuing an Off-Grid Homesteading Lifestyle

This is an education campaign of the National Diabetes Education Program that’s designed to stem the growing epidemic of diabetes. Registered Dietitian, Lynnett Renner, will outline steps that can be taken by pre-diabetic people to delay or possibly prevent the development of diabetes.

Want to know more about simplifying your lifestyle and learning how to live “off-grid”?

Donna and J.D. Rains made the decision to drastically alter their way of life and have lived “off-grid” for five years, using alternative power sources, and raising goats, chickens, and honeybees. They’ll answer any questions you may have about homesteading.

True Crime Cases

Tuesday, November 20th • 6-7pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION APPRECIATED This month we’ll be discussing the missing person’s case of Brandon Mason Lawson who disappeared on August 9, 2013 from a highway in Bronte, TX. How did he seem to disappear into thin air? What about the mysterious 911 phone call and the complex time line related to his vanishing?

Be sure to provide your email address when you register in order to receive information prior to the session including pertinent details on the case, links to websites, podcasts, and clips that we’ll be discussed as a group during class.

Terry Lee and the Rockaboogie Band is a high energy, first class show band that will perform a large selection of popular hits from the 50s and 60s, and will provide the audience with “the wildest piano pumpin’ Rock & Roll Show since Jerry Lee Lewis!” Be sure to write this date on your calendar and bring the whole family for an evening of great music and fun! You might even be inspired to get up and dance!

Teen Coding

If you’re tired of not being able to find a mug to suit your style then stop what you’re doing and make your own. We’ll provide everything you need to design the mug of your dreams.

This will be the third session working with our new coding material. We’ll continue creating instruments and music videos, and learning how technology is used in the music industry.

R.A.D. Self Defense Class

Self Defense System is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. This is a comprehensive course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.

This will be a two part class taught by the London Police Department. Both classes must be attended. For young women ages 16-22 only.

Homeschool Happenings

Calling all dads, grandfathers, and uncles! Spend an evening with your little one reading some exciting books, singing some fun songs, and getting creative with a hands-on activity. While you’re here take some time to work a puzzle and visit our block table, but be sure to check out some books for the perfect bedtime story.

Come to the library where we’ll learn fascinating facts about Totem Poles and the Native American tribes that made and used them. Then we’ll make our own totem poles and decorate them with animals and symbols unique to the Native Americans.

There will be four grade categories, Pre K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, and 9th-12th AND three winners within each category! There will also be an overall winner who’ll take home the BIG TROPHY! All projects will be displayed in the library auditorium for everyone to see on Tuesday, November 14th. You don’t want to miss this event!

ON DISPLAY Local Veterans Exhibit October 26th - November 7th To coincide with the release of our new 2018 edition of Our Veterans, Their Stories, the library will be showcasing photos, uniforms, and other memorabilia from this year’s participating veterans.

Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness November 8th - December 20th This traveling exhibition explores the interconnectedness of wellness, illness and cultural life for Native Americans, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) developed and produced Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness. The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, in partnership with NLM, tours the exhibition to America’s libraries.
