The Honest Mom’s Guide to the Best Vacuums for Stairs

in 2025 (After Trying 6 Myself)

Hey, I’m Kara. I’ve got three kids, one energetic dog, and a two-story house that always seems to need cleaning. I was constantly lugging a heavy vacuum up and down the stairs, only to realize it wasn’t even picking up all the dirt.

After a bunch of trial and error (and returns), I finally found a few vacuums that actually make cleaning stairs less of a chore. If you’re tired of wasting time and money like I did, this guide might save you the headache.

1. Dyson V8 Cordless Stick Vacuum (My Favorite One) ✅

Rating: 5/5 – Light, powerful, and easy to use

This is the one I keep going back to. The Dyson V8 is super lightweight, easy to carry, and has really strong suction. It handles carpeted stairs and corners without needing a million attachments, which is a huge win.

• Ease of Use: Very smooth, no fighting with it

• Weight: Super light, I can use it with one hand

• Battery Life: Lasts long enough to clean the stairs and then some

My favorite choice

I’ve been using it for about two weeks now and it hasn’t slipped or gotten stuck once. I can go up and down the stairs without worrying about the cord or the weight. Honestly thinking of buying a second one just in case they stop making it.

2. Shark Vertex Pro Cordless Vacuum

Rating: 4/5 – Super powerful but slightly bulkier

This one is great if you’ve got stubborn messes, especially pet hair. The suction is really strong and it pulls stuff out of the carpet that my old vacuum didn’t touch. It’s not as light as the Dyson, but it’s still manageable.

• Ease of Use: Very effective, but a bit heavier

• Weight: Medium, not too bad

• Battery Life: Good enough for a full clean

It definitely gets deeper into carpet than most, and I like how clean it leaves the steps. A little heavier, so I tend to use it more when doing a full house clean.

3. Kenmore Cordless Stick Vacuum

Rating: 3/5 – Basic but works fine for small messes

If you’re on a tight budget and need something that gets the job done, this one’s worth a look. It’s not going to wow you with power, but it’s light, easy to carry, and picks up surface-level dust just fine.

• Ease of Use: Great for a quick pass over the stairs

• Weight: Very light

• Battery Life: Okay for small areas

• Buy it: Check Walmart or Amazon depending on stock

It’s not the most powerful, but for the price, it’s honestly fine. I use it for small pickups between deep cleans.
