Letter from the President

“ Empowering women” is a message and theme you will hear from me and throughout the Lauralton Hall community on a continual basis. This is the core of everything we do here, and this issue of “Hallmarks” brings to the forefront three areas of focus that “empower” our young women to better understand themselves and impact their local communities and the world as a whole.

Our freshmen physics program allows our youngest girls to learn to love science and see where they fit into the world of STEM education (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

Despite all of the advancements involving women in our society, studies show that there are fewer women involved in STEM education and careers as a percentage than in the 1980s.

This is just one area where we are enabling and involving women in professions where they are traditionally under-represented. While statistics show fewer women continue to enter STEM fields nationally, I have seen over the last five years so many of our graduates go on to college and careers in engineering and other science majors.

The women’s studies classes at Lauralton Hall are designed to allow our students to have a better understanding of themselves as young women. By learning and studying the history of women’s issues here in the United States and all over the world, Lauralton girls are empowered to learn their role on the community stage. Our students will be entering universities and a workforce that are much more diverse than it was even just a few years ago. It is imperative that they have a deep multicultural appreciation and understanding.

Our global studies program, and in fact Lauralton Hall as a whole, follows the path set for us by our founders, the Sisters of Mercy. The Sisters can be found in every corner of the world, engaging in global awareness, working for social justice, and facilitating understanding among people. They began as a group of “walking nuns,” serving in the very poor areas of Ireland, teaching and by example, demonstrating the vast potential of women. Today, it is Lauralton students who are taking up this mantle of empowerment and excellence through Mercy.

At Lauralton, students don’t have to travel across the world to be part of this amazing mosaic of diversity. We currently have 11 young women as part of our student body who are here from China, and we are working to bring more students to Lauralton from other countries. I was a Fulbright Scholar in England for several years, and had the privilege of living and studying with people from all over the world as a volunteer and consultant in places such as Guyana, Swaziland, Belarus, Thailand, South Africa, Russia, and Central Asia. I know how important this exposure was to my formation, and I am thrilled that we can bring an awareness of global issues and diversity through our international students.

All three of these programs at Lauralton Hall, freshmen physics, women’s studies, and global vision, are tied together to enable our students to understand they will have an impact on creating a more just society, moving women to lead in currently underrepresented fields, and better understanding their responsibility to the local and global community. Our students will use what they learn at Lauralton Hall to go out and leave their mark, leading the way to a more equitable world in which to live.

In The News Lauralton Celebrates Mercy Day September 24 marks an annual celebration which Lauralton women have been participating in for more than 109 years.

Lauralton Hall joined with other Sisters of Mercy schools around the world to celebrate the founding of the first House of Mercy in 1831. Mercy Day, the first community day of the school year, began with a special Liturgy and was followed by a campus-wide picnic lunch. This continues to be a special day of reflection for the entire community.

Students Rally for the Discovery to Cure Beverly Levy Walk

Several students joined health and physical education teacher Peggy McGowan to volunteer at the Discovery to Cure Walk on the Yale University campus. Participants strolled through the Yale grounds, learning about the history of Yale and the historic landmarks while supporting this important cause.

Lauralton Hall Makes it to the Great White Way!

Times Square once again gave a “shout out” to Lauralton Hall, welcoming the Class of 2018. A special thank you to John and Dawn Llewellyn P’18, ’14 for help in getting our students on Broadway!

Taste the Diversity

LH CARES (LH Cares And Respects Every Student) held “Taste The Diversity” of the school on October 1 in the Claven Auditorium.

The entire school community was invited to sample food prepared by LH CARES club members that reflected the various ethnicities that make up the population of the school. Dishes included pasta (Italy), a rice dish (Haiti), pierogies (Poland), fried chicken wings (America), and egg rolls and a wide assortment of rice cakes and cookies (China).

The French Club contributed baguettes, cookies, and Perrier and Evian water to the festivities.

Gates of Honor

The Lauralton students spent their class period tying ribbons on the entrance gates of Lauralton Hall in honor of cancer awareness. The three colors represent pink for women’s breast cancer awareness, blue for men’s breast cancer awareness, and teal for reproductive cancer awareness. Bill Becker, a dear friend of the Lauralton community lost his fight to breast cancer last year. The blue ribbons were hung in his honor and memory. Videographer Nick Sadler, a friend of Bill’s, is creating a documentary about men’s breast cancer. He stopped by to film the gates for his documentary, which is due to be completed mid-February.

Matriculation Ceremony Welcomes the Class of 2018 Surrounded by family, friends, and faculty bedecked in their academic robes, the Class of 2018 was officially welcomed into the Lauralton Hall community on August 26. In her welcome address, President Toni Iadarola, Ph.D, repeated her tradition of quoting from one of her favorite bands, the Jonas Brothers. In paraphrasing one of their popular songs “It is Time for Me to Fly”, Dr. Toni noted “the years ahead will be the time for you to fly; the time for you to soar.” She shared with the freshman class some words of advice she solicited from the faculty, and added some suggestions of her own: Balance your coursework with the many activities available to you, Commit more time to studying than you did in grammar school…no matter how good of a student you were or are, Seek help when you need it, Get to know your teachers; they want you to get to know them, Get to know your classmates and the other students and develop relationships, Grow into being your true self…being the unique person that God created…the person that Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy would want you to be.

Dr. Toni emphasized each student’s unique individuality and encouraged the girls to become the young women they are meant to be. She closed by quoting another popular singer/songwriter, Katy Perry, from her song “Roar”, encouraging young women to stand up and be heard. “Because I am a champion and you’re going to hear me roar.”

Lauralton Hall Celebrates 150 Years of the Pond/Taylor Estate

T

his academic school year marks the 150-year anniversary of the Pond-Taylor estate, the home of the Academy of Our Lady of Mercy, Lauralton Hall. An indepth history written by Mary Koehm ’46 entitled Centum: From Loft Towers, A Legacy of Lamplight, describes the original estate and its owners in detail. Constructed in 1864, the Victorian Gothic mansion is the oldest structure on the campus. Built for Charles Hobby Pond, a descendant of a colonial Milford family, it is now the center of Lauralton’s present four-building complex. In 1889, the property known as ‘Island View’, was sold by the Pond heirs to Henry Augustus Taylor, a New Yorkfinancier. He renamed it “Lauralton Hall” after his mother and deceased daughter, who were both named Laura. The Sisters of Mercy purchased the architecturally significant property in 1905. Per the request of the Taylor family, the name Lauralton Hall remained.

Under the dynamic leadership of Mother Mary Augustine Claven, the boarding and day programs of a girls’ Catholic academy at Lauralton Hall were established. A year after opening the school, the three-story brick St. Joseph Building was built and later, in 1917, a four-story brick wing was added, today’s Mercy Hall. Subsequently, a one-story facility was erected behind it. These vintage buildings continue to serve as integral parts of the school, housing classrooms, a chapel, a cafeteria, a Center for Guidance and College Planning as well as administrative offices.

Freshmen Physics Helps Build a Love of Science

F

orbes Magazine summed up this troubling trend in a recent article titled STEM Fields and the Gender Gap: Where are the Women? “The problem starts as early as grade school. Young girls are rarely encouraged to pursue math and science, which is problematic considering studies show a lack of belief in intellectual growth can actually inhibit it. In addition, there exists an unconscious bias that science and math are typically ‘male’ fields while humanities and arts are primarily ‘female’ fields, and these stereotypes further inhibit girls’ likelihood of cultivating an interest in math and science.”

Lauralton Hall has been responding directly to this situation with their “freshmen physics” program, which started 14 years ago. This program, modeled after Project ARISE (American Renaissance in Science Education), developed a framework for students to study physics their first year of high school as a way to build interest and excitement for science. The results of this freshmen physics initiative at Lauralton Hall have been dramatic.

“The number of engineering and science majors that have come out of Lauralton Hall over the last several years has exploded,” said science department chair and physics teacher Theresa Napolitano. “After studying physics first, we have found students to be enthusiastic and excited about science, and many girls are now taking science electives beyond their three required courses.”

The results of the freshmen physics program are not just seen while students are at Lauralton Hall—a large number of graduates have gone on to study STEM fields at prestigious universities and to work with prominent employers.

“Deidre Eason ’13 is studying at a top engineering program at Villanova University. Emilia Tanu ’13 is a student at University of Maryland’s engineering program and she directly credits her preparation at Lauralton,” Theresa added.

“Heather Hawkes ’09 graduated from Harvard, and there are many, many others. My own two daughters, graduates of Lauralton Hall, are currently studying physics at Connecticut College. And we have alumnae like Gina Landini Jakober ’05 (one of the first LH students to go through the freshmen physics program) currently working as an engineer at Sikorsky Aircraft.

One Lauralton Hall graduate, Meghan Kerrisk ’04, is a PhD candidate in the department of Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics at Yale University. In her mind, there is no doubt she would not be where she is today if she had not attended Lauralton Hall.

“After taking the entrance exam at Lauralton, I was placed into honors math and science classes,” Meghan stated.

“This was the first time anyone told me I was good at science or math. Even more exciting, LH was using a new strategy to teach science and I was the first class to take physics, rather than biology, as freshman. This recognition that I was ‘smart’ flipped a switch in me academically and I became motivated and interested in the material. I felt I had something to prove to the administration, my parents, and myself.

“Lauralton is a truly special environment where my academic drive was fostered and allowed to thrive. The support and academic training I received encouraged me to follow my scientific ambitions.”

And the impact of freshmen physics on current students is nothing short of impressive.

“Freshman physics, as well as all other sciences at Lauralton, has inspired

The US Department of Commerce reported in 2011 that just one in seven engineers in the country are female, despite the fact that half of the college-educated workforce is women.

me to pursue a major and career in the science field,” commented Jackie Brewster ’15. “I always thought that I would become a teacher, but after taking physics, I now know that I want to be an engineer.

Building rollercoasters and catapults made me realize my love for an active, hands on job, which is why engineering will be perfect for me.”

The freshmen physics program at Lauralton uses math formulas to break things down into logical steps, which overall helps students to become more analytical. Tackling physics word problems, like algebra, helps students gain confidence in both math and science.

“At Lauralton, we are studying full math-based, college-prep physics,” Theresa shared. “We learn the subject in the classroom and then go out and observe physics, see it, and use it in reallife situations. Our curriculum includes the physics behind driving a car, all sorts of sports examples, and even catapulting a pumpkin. This has enabled

us to connect with the students, and they get excited about science.”

Jackie agrees that one of the really powerful aspects of freshmen physics is connecting the subject to the real world.

“Mrs. Napolitano says, ‘physics is everywhere!’ and she’s right,” Jackie added. “Wherever I go, I notice physics.

Having physics at the start of a young women’s high school career is also believed to help with higher scores on PSATs and SATs. “Parents often will tell me that their daughter has become an independent thinker early in their time at Lauralton Hall,” Theresa concluded.

“While they may have disliked science and math in middle school, they now love it. By Thanksgiving of their freshmen year, many young students are now talking about physics in everyday life.”

Inspired by the core values of the Sisters of Mercy, Lauralton Hall, since its’ founding, has continually emphasized to students the need for community and global involvement and understanding.

This includes opportunities and encouragement for students to take part in overseas service and learning experiences, and also interacting with international students who study at Lauralton Hall.

O

ver the last several years, Lauralton has been able to offer international experiences that are open and available to all students. Just this past year, the school offered its annual Guatemala service trip in February, a trip to Central Europe in the spring, and an excursion to France right after graduation.

Lauralton students also engage in many other international opportunities made available by organizations outside of the school.

Courtney Dwyer was named the first coordinator of international experience at Lauralton Hall at the beginning of the previous academic year, in addition to her responsibilities as the chair of the social studies department and history teacher. During the 16 years she has taught at LH, the focus of courses offered has widened to emphasize a global curriculum, which includes global studies, contemporary issues, and modern history.

In addition, 11 students from China are studying at Lauralton this year. The school works with an agency in China to help recruit students who will be a good fit at the Milford school. Each student stays with a host family here in Connecticut. In fact, this past May the first Chinese student graduated from Lauralton Hall!

“When I first visited, Lauralton made me think of old castles and a place where I felt at home,” commented Minyue “Linda” Ruan ’15, one of the students from China. “Besides that, the teachers and students are so nice. When I walked in the hallway, they all said hi to me and asked me if I needed any help finding places. I think for any international

Courtney sees continuing growth in the number of international students coming to Lauralton, as well as opportunities for students to have experiences abroad.

“Our five year vision is to have students studying at Lauralton from China and several other countries— we actually do have an exchange student from Switzerland with us this year as well,” Courtney added. “This way our

students are able to learn from each other’s cultures, languages, and educational practices. The plan is to have international students here and have them become part of the Lauralton Hall culture.

“Our world is rapidly changing and becoming so much more connected.

It is so important for our students to get out and learn to communicate with people from international settings,” Courtney shared. “Understanding other cultures, the global economy, and how to interact in different settings are essential skills our students need to learn.”

ith this powerful mission statement in mind, it is no surprise that Lauralton has provided a women’s studies course, “Women’s Studies: Current Global Empowerment and Awareness”, as part of the curriculum for the last three years.

The first paragraph of every syllabus given to students at the start of every class explains the importance of studying women’s issues and empowering young female students. “The administration and faculty at Lauralton Hall believe in the power of the female mind; we believe that all young women can grow and blossom into their best selves. Our curriculum is designed to help you achieve this, providing you opportunities to develop your own strengths and talents.”

Throughout the semester, students in the women’s studies course are presented with real-world challenges and develop potential solutions for issues that women and girls encounter regarding violence, poverty, healthcare disparities, prejudice, justice, politics, religion, and more.

Lisa Peterson teaches the women’s studies class at Lauralton and has taught at the school since 2001. When she was asked to develop a women’s studies course, she wanted to make sure that the class would build upon the knowledge the students had learned in many of the studies they previously completed.

“It was important to me that the students take ownership of the course,” Lisa stated. “Through our students’ research, they are learning about the issues, solutions, mercy, and empowering achievements being made internationally by women and girls today.”

Lauralton students agree that this course can alter the way girls think about themselves and the world.

“The women’s studies course changed my perspective towards the world and the role women play in it,” stated Alex Torres ’13, currently a student at Loyola University in Maryland. “I now recognize that it is extremely important to not only work towards but achieve

gender equality for the benefit of society as a whole. As a high school student, this course taught me to further appreciate the opportunity I was given at Lauralton­— to learn in a single-sex environment with experienced teachers who had a genuine interest in our education. As I continue my education in college, I am more inclined to speak up for women’s rights in class and to break the stereotype that women’s rights mean less rights for men.”

The women’s studies course at Lauralton does not rely on the use of traditional textbooks, as current global women’s studies textbooks are outdated.

Thanks to the state-of-the-art wireless Internet access throughout the school, the course is structured to take advantage of all that the digital world has to offer regarding today’s women’s issues and the news and work accomplished within the last five years.

“This is a seminar style course that literally covers the globe,” Lisa added.

“The students start their adventure with

the diversity of women’s issues in the Pan-Americas, and then investigate the positive impact the European Union is trying to make for women within their member countries. After Europe, the students shift their research to China, where they begin to understand that a communist upbringing provides a very different feminist mindset. The students then move on to issues women face in India.”

The semester continues to the Middle East to examine the role Islam and Sharia law have with women in those parts of the world. “The students reveal a deeper understanding of women’s rights in the Middle East,” she said. “Researching women like Manal Al-Sharif, a Saudi woman who dared to operate a car against Sharia law, demonstrates to the students how much American women take for granted.”

The course concludes with an investigation of women’s issues in Africa, which according to Lisa, is the easiest region of the world to research in this area. “Thanks to the hard work of Rainatou Sow, who created the website makeeverywomancount.org, the students are able to research current annual reports that provide the progress women are making in every country in Africa.”

Throughout the semester, students in the women’s studies course are presented with real-world challenges and develop potential solutions for issues that women and girls encounter regarding violence, poverty, healthcare disparities, prejudice, justice, politics, religion, and more. Students take on the role of investigators to examine how modern women are making contributions that either empower them or make the world aware of injustices. The course is primarily project-based, with a portfolio presented as a wiki page depicting collaborative research collections from primary source websites. Students also debate and discuss the researched information.

“This class helps our students to understand different ways women are dealing with education, legal matters, healthcare, maternity leave, and equal pay globally,” Lisa shared. “Our students now have a broader perspective and better understand women from other countries who they will encounter as they complete service projects, attend college, and perhaps work with in their career roles. Ultimately, this course broadens their learning experience of the merciful actions women humbly undertake in all countries to improve the lives of others.”

n June 1 Lauralton Hall presented diplomas to 119 young women of the Class of 2014. This year’s commencement was dedicated to Principal Ann Pratson who, after 35 years at Lauralton, retired.

She and French teacher Dr. Regina Moller, who retired after 30 years, were presented with roses.

The Class of 2014 Embarks On a New Adventure

President Antoinette Iadarola, Ph.D. gave the opening and closing remarks and, along with Chairman of the Board of Trustees Michael Amato and Principal Ann Pratson, presented the graduates with their diplomas. The following is an excerpt from the Address to the Graduates by Dr. Toni Iadarola: You have learned well to have the courage to follow your heart. Many of you have told me that you found your voice here. So do not let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. Stay true to yourself and never give in to pressure to try to be something you are not. Lauralton Hall has given you the tools to succeed and to change the world.

Graduates, never forget that you have been given the privilege of an education so few in our world today have. With that privilege comes the responsibility to make this world a better and more just place.

I know this is a bittersweet day for you will never be together like this again. You have made friends that you will have for life. Keep close the friends you have made here; they are more valuable than you know.

And keep close to your alma mater for you will always remain in our memories...

Ann Pratson, Principal Ann Pratson retired in June 2014 after nearly 35 years serving in a variety of positions at Lauralton Hall: math teacher, Athletic Director, and Academic Dean. She was appointed Principal in 1993 and in that capacity has assisted in enhancing the mission of Lauralton Hall in so many ways. Under Ann’s leadership, building and renovation projects included the Athletic Center, Art and Science Labs in St. Joseph Building, the Center for Guidance and College Planning. The school also benefited from

the new curriculum and schedule design, classroom refurbishment, and technology expansion.

“I feel so fortunate to have spent over half of my educational years at Lauralton Hall, and in particular, as Principal for the School for the past 20 years,” said Ann. “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve this learning community, where faculty, staff, and parents are so engaged in the education of our young women.”

A celebration for Ann, held on June 11, 2014 in the Athletic Center, was attended by her many family, friends, faculty, staff, and Lauralton alumnae.

An avid traveler, she has already planned a month-long road trip which will take her throughout the southern states and through the Smokey Mountains.

April Kelley Named NAIS “Teacher of the Future”

Theresa Napolitano Recognized as National Softball Coach of the Year

April Kelley was selected by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) to participate in its annual Teachers of the Future program. The 2014–15 NAIS Teachers of the Future were selected from a large pool of nominees who exemplify creativity and innovation in the classroom, inspire academic excellence in students, and who serve as opinion leaders among their colleagues and peers. As one of only 35 teachers nationwide chosen for the program, April will participate in a variety of initiatives that will strengthen learning and teaching at independent schools as well as grow their leadership capacities. NAIS President John Chubb notes, “Teachers nurture our children’s growth and development. These exceptional Teachers of the Future are not only preparing children to succeed in life; they are moving the profession forward by modeling innovative practices and leadership among their peers.”

Theresa Napolitano, or Coach Nap as she is affectionately called, has been named the 2014 Softball Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA). Coach Nap was honored with this national recognition at the annual HNSACA national convention at the Snow King Resort in Jackson Hole. Napolitano was also elected into the Connecticut Softball Hall of Fame with the induction taking place in March 2015. The NHSACA’s annual award is considered the most prestigious award given to high school coaches in America, and is awarded based on the recipients’ successful season of coaching and their lifetime achievements.

April-Ann Marshall ’10 graduated cum laude from Loyola Maryland, majoring in Art History with a minor in Italian. She was awarded a medal for Art History at a special ceremony where she and other recipients were honored in their various fields the day before graduation. Mary-Megan Marshall ’08 graduated from Fairfield University in 2012 and is now attending graduate school at UCONN. Carol Hollo Bybee notes how excited she is to see the Carriage Barn restoration taking place. She has vivid memories of the barn and remarks, “I used to sit on the Merry-Go-Round and see the maintenance workers going in and out while I did my homework. I admired it then and always will.” Carol resides in Long Beach, California.

Eileen Daly Bodell and her husband Gerry both passed away on April 26, 2014. Eileen died at home in Westport and Gerry passed away at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport, CT hours later. After 54 years of marriage, Eileen, was in perfect health though worried about Gerry, passed away following a simple procedure. Doctors informed the family that her heart simply stopped due to Broken Heart Syndrome.

Though Gerry was unaware of Eileen’s cardiac arrest, he followed her just hours later, also following complications his doctors could not explain. A recognized authority on legal cases involving the rights of the individual, Gerry served as special counsel for the Legal Aid Society of New York and was involved in numerous constitutional law trials. Eileen, a talented interior designer, worked in a home décor store and started her own line of artisanal wreaths all while raising her children.

She was the beloved matriarch to her extended family and remained devoted to her lifelong friends from Lauralton Hall.

Vernona Gomez tells LH that she “enjoyed reading the Lauralton Hallmarks winter 2014 issue and hearing all the news by email of the outstanding academic and sports achievements of the Lauralton students on today’s scene.” Verona has been quite busy with piano performances, teaching, and travelling the country on the baseball scene.

Her book Lefty: An American Odyssey is about her father legendary New York Yankees Hall of Fame pitcher Vernon “Lefty” Gomez. She attended the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), the largest baseball convention in the world, and was a guest at their Hall of Fame Coach of the Year banquet where the prestigious Lefty Gomez Award is presented to an individual who has distinguished himself amongst his peers and has contributed significantly to the game of baseball locally, nationally, and internationally. Over 4,000 collegiate coaches attended the ABCA convention in Dallas, Texas. Vernona presented the Lefty Gomez award to Norm DeBriyn, Coach of the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. Kathleen Spencer Sargent is proud to note that her granddaughter, Elizabeth Sargent ’16, is a Wilton Wahoo YMCA team member and was a qualifier for four events at the 2014 YMCA National Championship Meet. The event was held April 1–4 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, Greensboro, North Carolina. Elizabeth is the daughter of LH faculty member and Fine Arts Department Chair Margy Sargent and sister of Caroline Sargent ’18.

Roberta Adams and granddaughters Isabelle and Faith Armstrong visited LH over the summer while traveling from Ohio to visit friends.

They enjoyed their tour of the mansion, including a walk on the “Golden Staircase,” and Roberta was thrilled to finally receive her Golden Girl pin. The next day, Roberta met classmates for an annual luncheon and toast to deceased classmate Judi Pinto Holinko. The group was surprised to see LH napkins and Golden Girl notecards on their table at Pepe’s Pizzeria, New Haven, courtesy of the LH Alumnae Office!

Peggy Knapp DeFrancisco proudly announces that her son Lt. Col. John Beurer, has assumed command of the 40th Helicopter Squadron in Great Falls, Montana. A 1998 graduate of the USAF Academy, he served as Initial Cadre for the Air Force’s newest helicopter platform, the TH-1H, from developmental testing through operational employment. Beurer was the lead subject matter expert in the development of the TH-1H flight simulator.

Deployed as an Air Advisor to the Afghan Air Corps, he was the combined Air Power Transition Forces’s Rotary Wing Program Manager, building the fledgling Afghan fleet. Peggy was recently elected President of the Florida American Rental Association. Vice President of 2D Enterprises, Inc., she also serves on the American Rental Association Political Action Committee Council at the national level.

Married to Mike DeFrancisco, they have a combined family of six children and twelve grandchildren.

Lorraine Premak Dierkes is now Executive Director of e.Angels, Inc., a non-profit organization she formed last year. After volunteering for years at her children’s schools and serving as PTO President, Lorraine realized that many children could not afford field trips, class projects, activity fees, etc. and that often teachers were covering these fees themselves. She formed a project called ‘e-Angels’ where

Due to the tremendous success she had at several schools, Lorraine decided to grow the concept to help many more children and formed the nonprofit e-Angels Incorporated.

Their mission statement says, e.Angels is here to “help children fully participate in a rich educational experience regardless of socio-economic status.” During last school year, Lorraine has gone from helping children at one school, to helping children at 17 schools in 3 school districts. Jan Powers assumed the role of Academic Dean at Lauralton Hall this past July. In 1980, Jan began her teaching career at Lauralton and was appointed chair of the math department in 1985; co-chaired the NEASC accreditation process in 2008 and since 2011 has served as Coordinator of Academic Affairs in addition to her teaching/chair duties. Jan was instrumental in crafting LH’s present class schedule and played a major role in the implementation of a revised evaluation system for teaching faculty.

Mary Money, 2012 Athletic Hall of Fame Recipient ran her twelfth marathon at the Boston Marathon representing the Tufts University Team for research to fight childhood obesity. Her sister, Teresa Money McLaughlin ’86, noted that “Mary was the happiest runner in the pack!”

Roberta Reynolds was part of a team of volunteers from Save the Sound, a program of the Connecticut Fund for the Environment, which looks to protect areas of Long Island Sound using legal and scientific expertise. The team helped to build a fish passage on the Pequonnock River in Bridgeport and also planted over 2,000 native plants along the river to filter runoff from roads and provide a habitat for wildlife. The project was very special to Roberta as she noted, “I swam here as a child and I would like to see it healthy like it was.” She also believes there is much more at risk in the river.

“It’s a domino effect. If the fish go, other things will go extinct.”

Roberta serves as a member of the Lauralton Alumnae Executive Board and is a graphic designer at Fairfield University.

Ryan Kurt and Jake Thomas were born at Yale New Haven Hospital on September 12, 2014 weighing 3.15lbs and 4.03lbs respectively. Andrea Archer participated in the New York City Triathlon finishing seventh in her age division with a time of 2:28:17 and was invited recently to join the Houlihan Lokey sponsored women’s cycling team. Andrea is an Art Director with HAVAS Worldwide, an advertising agency in New York City.

Andrea and her creative partner represented HAVAS in a nine-hour hack-a-thon to benefit the United Way New York City. Their entry was chosen as the winner among the five participating ad agencies and was immediately adopted by the foundation.

Mary-Morgan attended Smith College where she participated in a study abroad program in Geneva and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in French Studies. After Smith College, she earned a teaching certificate and taught at the Alliance Française of Greenwich and completed her master degree in French studies from Middlebury College, which included a summer of study in Poitiers and a year of study in Brussels. Mary-Morgan was very excited to lead her own students on a trip to France this past summer to allow them both a linguistic and cultural immersion experience.

She is also attending graduate school full-time for Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of Bridgeport and will graduate in May. Sarah Beyer graduated from Roger Williams University with a bachelor’s in Anthropology/Sociology. Her senior thesis was on Refugees and the Relocation Process. Her love of her country led her to join the Rhode Island Army National Guard to become a black hawk pilot.

She recently graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and is currently at AIT in Fort Rucker, Alabama where she is learning the duties of a 15P, which is an aviation operation specialist.

Sara notes that she loved her training and knows that she made the right choice to have a career in the military.

Maggie Archer received the Kenneth M. Butler Award from the Purdue University Crew team. Known formerly as the Most Valuable Oarsman/Oarswoman Award, Maggie was chosen as a recipient by members of the women’s varsity squad. Maggie served the Purdue Crew Varsity Women’s team as stroke for three years and was elected as the Women’s Rigger for 2013-2014. Maggie is finishing her degree in Building and Construction Management at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Taylor Healey was named Quinnipiac University Bobcats Women’s Soccer team’s Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Healey was a formidable piece to the Bobcats backline this past season and proved deserving of the Player of The Year Award for the second consecutive season. Healey appeared and started in all 16 games for the Bobcats in 2013. She has been a part of a Bobcat defense that was responsible for six shutouts in 2013 and 14 shutouts over the last two seasons. Quinnipiac was third in the MAAC this past season allowing only 1.19 goals per game.

Briana Archer received an apprenticeship with Shakespeare on the Sound which performed Two Gentlemen of Verona in Rowayton, Connecticut. The apprentice program provides learning and performance opportunities for developing actors. Briana performed the part of Proteus in the pre-show, adapted for children, and supported the production of the Main Stage show. Briana is in her junior year at NYU’s Tisch School for Performing Arts.

Allison Carey plays lacrosse for Dickinson College (Carlisle, PA). Her team played Centennial Conference rival, Haverford College this past May at Haverford. Former Lauralton teammate, Christina Gould ’12, plays lacrosse for Haverford (Haverford, PA).

Both girls were All-State Lacrosse Players at Lauralton, and are still great friends.

Dearly Departed continued Sister Dorothy Synkewecz of the Sisters of Mercy, Northeast Community,

died August 17, 2014 in her Milford home. Born and raised in Waterbury, Sister Dorothy was the daughter of the late Joseph and Antoinette (Zeber) Synkewecz. She attended both Sacred Heart Grade School and Sacred Heart High School and entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1951. Sister’s death occurred on the anniversary of her vow day 60 years ago. Dorothy earned a B.A. from the Diocesan Sisters’ College in Madison and an M.A. from St. Joseph College in West Hartford. She taught elementary grades in several schools throughout the state including St. Joseph, South Norwalk and St. Mary, Bridgeport, but it was at the Academy of Our Lady of Mercy, Lauralton Hall in Milford that she truly found her niche, ministering there for 27 years as a religion teacher, pastoral counselor, and outreach coordinator. In 2011, she was honored by Lauralton with the prestigious Claven Award. Sister Dot, as the students called her, was bigger than life! She loved people in general, but especially the faculty and the young women at Lauralton with whom she kept in touch long after graduation. A long-time member of the Mercy Justice Commission, she was committed to mercy and justice and instilled in her students an interest and deep concern for others. The organizer of Lauralton’s first Peace and Justice Day and a long-time volunteer at Mercy Learning Center (Bridgeport), Merton House of Hospitality, and the St. Vincent DePaul guest center (Middletown), Sister Dot may be best known for her open-door office policy and camaraderie with all. One of her many fine qualities was her appreciation for the smallest acts kindness.

Sister Madeline Follachio of the Sisters of Mercy, Northeast Community,

died September 14, 2014 in West Hartford. One of eight children, Sister was born in Waterbury on February 25, 1920 to the late Anthony and Anna (Colangelo) Follachio. She attended both Sacred Heart Grammar and High Schools and at the age of 18 on June 27, 1938 she entered the Sisters of Mercy, professing her vows three years later. This year Sister celebrated 76 years of religious life! She was the first in her family to earn a college diploma which was from the then St. Joseph College in West Hartford and went on to graduate study at Fairfield and Sacred Heart Universities. Sister Madeline taught junior high and high school students in many schools throughout the state, but her greatest joy was her years at Lauralton Hall where she ministered as Dean of Students for 14 years. In 2003 she was awarded the Claven Award from Lauralton, an honor bestowed to women who have “led extraordinary lives, excelled in their choice of fields and made significant impact on Lauralton Hall.” In pre-retirement, Sister served as a Para-Professional in Compensatory Education for the Milford Board of Education tutoring middle and secondary students. She retired in 1999 but continued active ministry tutoring under the Milford Literacy Center with assignments at BIC Corporation where she taught English as a Second Language. This past November, Sister was honored

by Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury with the Rev. John Meaney Community Impact Award. Throughout retirement Sister kept in touch with students and colleagues and always maintained an interest in people and the world around her, particularly women’s and other justice issues. A life-long learner, she was a voracious reader and enjoyed travel.
