In my role as chair of Lauralton Hall’s Board of Trustees, I am filled with a sense of great honor and pride. Lauralton Hall is highly recognized today as one of the premier Catholic college-prep high schools for girls in Connecticut. Our mission of empowering young women to lead meaningful lives of leadership and service is strong. Our promise of educational excellence, guided by the Mercy core values, allows the school to foster intellectual curiosity and outstanding qualities of character. I am particularly proud to share with you the 2015-16 Annual Report. The generosity reflected in the pages of this magazine is a testament to the hard work of so many volunteers. It is also a celebration of the commitment of the entire Lauralton Hall community to the growth and success of our school. Lauralton Hall trustees, faculty and staff, parents, alumnae and friends supported our fundraising efforts in record numbers this year. The 2015-16 Lauralton Fund exceeded its goal by over $100,000 and the Because We Believe campaign is well on its way to crossing the finish line in a few months. It is an impressive achievement that makes an impact in the daily lives of our students and faculty. I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to partner with all of you in investing in future generations of Lauralton students. “The deepest gratitude is in my heart for those who give so generously to support Lauralton students.”
As we reflect back on the past year, it is with immense gratitude for the many hands and hearts that give so generously so that every Lauralton student has the tools for success. And it does, indeed, take many hands to provide an exceptional educational experience for our students—faculty and staff, parents and alumnae, friends and businesses. Together we have achieved so much. By the end of 2015-16, we were at 91 percent of goal in the $6 million Because We Believe capital campaign. Our new, $2 million artificial turf field and practice track was dedicated in May; classroom renovations and upgrades are ongoing, including restoration of the Carriage Barn; and we are increasing financial aid resources to ensure that all qualified students have access to a Lauralton Hall education. Annual giving last year reached an all-time high. In this report, you will find examples of all our students achieved and the outstanding opportunities they enjoy because of the vital support of our Lauralton Fund each year. Interest in Lauralton Hall also continues to increase. Last year, the number of middle school students attending Discover Lauralton grew 22 percent; seventh grade applications increased 10 percent; and more students (131) took the entrance exam. To meet demand, a new bus route to the Wilton/Ridgefield area was added. Thank you for your part in this success. The Impact of Philanthropy – A Home for the Arts
Lauralton students build a lifelong commitment to serving their communities and society. In 2015-16, they traveled to Guatemala through School the World to help build schools; partnered with the rural poor in Appalachia; and volunteered at local hospitals, cancer centers and nursing homes, among others. Building on our partnership with Starfish International, they engaged via Skype with girls in The Gambia on the importance of education for young women.
Members of the class of 2016, 108 strong, were accepted at more than 240 colleges and universities, many receiving their first choices among the U.S. News and World Report’s top 50 colleges. Our graduates received over $26 million in scholarships.
Three students were Commended National Merit Scholars. Five were summa scholars honored by the Archdiocese of Hartford. Jamiah Bennett (pictured) received the Catherine McAuley Award, Lauralton’s highest honor.

Lauralton students were also accepted into competitive internships through the Yale School of Medicine’s Discovery to Cure Program, the UCONN Engineering Program and the Yale Young Global Scholars Program in Biological and Biomedical Science.

In 2015-16, all Lauralton faculty participated in one or more workshops, conferences or seminars. Topics included new teaching concepts in AP Calculus and Physics; STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math); best practices in establishing historical collections; the use of design thinking in problem solving; and emotional intelligence. One received a grant to attend a teacher seminar at Stanford University on the Great Depression and WWII.
The Crusaders swimming and diving team took the 2015 CIAC State Class M Championship, and the tennis team earned the state championship title for the second year in a row in 2016. Cheerleading won first place in the New England Interscholastic Spirit Championships.
Fundraising continues for our new Center for the Visual and Performing Arts as part of the Because We Believe campaign. To transform the Carriage Barn, Phase III renovations were completed this past year. These included preparing space for an elevator, bringing electrical service into the space and resurfacing the basement area.
