THE PROJECT The St. Louis Riverfront Musem was designed to as a walkthrough of history. I started by examining the history of St. Louis using key points as the focus for each exhibit. Functions of the museum included: River history exhibit: Depicts the histpry of the Missouri River and it’s connections to the Mississippi, Illinois and Ohio Rivers Steamboat Exhibit: Displays a full size steamboat in an exhibit. Fully surrounding the steamboat is information on the very first steamboat landing in St. Louis (Zebulon Pike) and how it changed St. Louis (boosting economy by attracting immigrants to the area. Lewis & Clark Exhibit: Contains replicas of items Lewis & Clark had on their expedition. The exhibit also details aspects of their expedition with each item. In addition to the exhibits there is a small gift shop for each one with items unique to each exhibit. 4D Theatre: Creates an immersive experience of Lewis & Clark’s expedition Hallways and Common areas: Contain Biomes (A community of plants and animals that have common characteristics for the environment they exist in.) and small aquarium tanks along walls. 2 Restaurants Outdoor Areas Dock: Have information on the Steamboat landing Deck: create a deck overlooking the river that is also used as a picnic area and can have coin binoculars for visitors to overlook the river Trail: There is a trail that connects the proposed site and the Arch. The idea is to introduce this trail as part of the museum and highlight the connection between both sites

TAMPA OUTPATIENT HEALTH CENTER

TAMPA, FLORIDA | DESIGN 6.1 | PROFESSOR: CRAIG HUFFMAN

architecture portfolio

LOCATION

THE PROJECT

The site is located in Tampa, Florida on West Kennedy Blvd, adjacent to a walmart. It is roughly 600’ x 700’.

The project was provided as Gresham Smith, who are specialize in health facility designs. The Brandon HealthPlex located in Tampa, Florida and designed by Gresham Smith Architects was used as a precedent for the project. In designing this outpatient facility I asked myself three (3) questions: What does health & well being mean to you? To me, health and wellness is achieving balance in mind and body. Health insures that your body is functioning the way it is supposed to. To ensure this happens we must eat well, exercise and take care of our mental health. Wellness, means being of sound, mind and spirit. Just like with our health, we must feed our minds with things that are good for our souls. How can the built environment (architecture, landscape architecture & interiors) support & increase health & well being? The built environment supports and increases health & wellness in several ways including:

PAGE 22

Air: By providing a healthy entrance system, airlocks and operable windows we have more access to fresh air, which has been proven to be better for the body.

Light: Providing natural light and controlling the amount of glare allowed into a space. Mind: Providing a connection to nature Water: Providing access to drinking water and having filtration systems in place. Nourishment: Providing access to healthy food and making us aware of better eating habits. Comfort: Creating an inclusive design and having well controlled thermal systems throughout. How can the built environment increase medical staff effectiveness & efficiency? Providing fresh air, natural light, clean water, healthy food, and temperatures designed for human comfort are not only for visitors but also for the staff who spends the majority of the day in that one building. Providing a good working environment improves staff morale which improves a person’s overall productiveness. The staff in a medical facility must be healthy enough to walk long distances, and maintain enough energy for long shifts. To do this there must be nutritional food and adequate place to take a break.

PROCESS

The form of the health center was inspired through a room and garden exercise. The idea was to draw lines in a square that was meant to represent the site and fill in spaces to create a building shape.

PAGE 23

architecture portfolio

Upon realizing the site was too large for the sacle of the building we intended to design, the project was split into two (2) phases.

PAGE 24

PAGE 25

Phase 1 consists of the initial design and 400 parking spaces. There is a patient drop off located at the south east entrance while the access to the emergency drop off is located to the West of the Site. Phase 1 consists of many green and garden spaces, designed to promote healing and wellness.

SITE PLAN: PHASE 1

tampa outpatient health center /phase 1 & phase 2 site plans / architecture

SITE PLAN: PHASE 2 Phase 2, along with everything that makes up Phase 1, consists of 2 parking garages both containing an additional 400 parking spaces each, located at the west and north west. There is also a building designed to consist the same program as the building in phase 1. The garden space of phase 2 becomes a water feature, the pond located at the north of the site.

PAGE 27

Second Floor The second floor consist of Imaging, a waiting area and outpatient surgery. While imaging would ideally be located on the ground floor next to the emergency department, the design of the building did not permit this without compromising its form, so it was placed directly above it. The imaging department consists of an MRI, CT scanning, and male and female waiting areas. In the south wing is the outpatient surgery which consists of 4 operating rooms and the staff lounge and locker rooms. Third Floor The third floor consists of oupatient recovery, outpatient surgery and a public waiting area. Outpatient recovery, located in the north wing, consists of the PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit), and 20 prep and recovery room. Outpatient surgery, located in the south wing, directly above the outpatient surgery on the second floor, consists of 4 operating rooms, 2 endoscopy suites, and clean, soiled and equipment storage. FLOOR PLANS

Ground Floor The ground floor consists of the lobby that extends across both wings that has public access from the south east. In the north wing exiting the lobby is the laboratory and the emergency room. The emergency room contains 23 exam rooms, 2 trauma bays, 1 buriatric room, 2 nursing stations, a waiting room and a staff lounge. In the south wing there is the pharmacy, the cafe and education (which consists of 8 classrooms and 2 meeting rooms). The south wing’s ground floor is located near the street because those 3 needs to be easily accessible by the public.

Fourth Floor The fourth floor is only in the north wing and is reserved for primary and specialty care, reserved strictly for appointments and and consults. It was designed as leasable space for doctors with small practices.

Fifth Floor The fifth floor is the exact same as the fourth floor, only in the north wing and reserved for primary and specialty care.
