A Fun Community Service Day

On the 29th of March 2023, My friends and I went to SD Kanisius Prontakan. We had planned to do community service for the village.

My group, Vanessa, Laura, Annabelle and I had been planning for months. We had prepared all the things we needed before even arriving in the village. Our plan was to go bowling with the children. Plastic bottles and tennis balls had been brought by us. The plastic bottles were pins, and the tennis balls were balls to knock down the pins. We teamed up with another group, whose program was to teach how to introduce yourself in english. So everytime a child finishes introducing themselves, they get a chance to play bowling. Our main goal is to train their concentration while exercising and having fun.

Firstly, we set up the pins. We used 6 pins in total, 1 i the front row, 2 in the middle row and 3 in the last row When we finished setting it up, all of the students ha gone quiet. We asked the children to line up. Everyon got 2 chances to throw the ball and we fixed the pin afterwards. We kept on switching roles between the on who set up the pins and who hands the ball to th children, because fixing the pins are challenging an tiring at the same time. All the children were having fu and laughing as they bowled, the program was success.

To be honest, we didn’t expect to go to a school and do community service with a bunch of people, which is why we didn’t bring many plastic bottles and tennis balls. I think it would have been better if we had more plastic bottles and tennis balls just in case because it’s better to have extras than not having any. If we had brought more plastic bottles and tennis balls, we wouldn’t be as tired, since we don’t have to fix it after every turn. Other than that, it will be faster because more than one kid can go at once. From this activity, I learned to be more prepared. In the future, I will make sure to plan for the worst case scenario, so if anything happens, everything will be under control.

Even though it’s quite difficult to control everything happening at the same time; the chaos, fun and excitement, it has been a very memorable experience for me. I enjoyed interacting and communicating with children at the village, while helping them learn in a fun way. I will definitely do more community services in the future. (A.J.J)
