The Editor writes …

As I write this I am trying to make sense of the announced Lockdown v3. Much of the content was submitted before the restrictions that took place from Boxing Day were announced, and now we see weeks ahead of very restricted activity, and very limited hours of daylight to get out and about. I remember talking with my mother when she was in her nineties as we were making a timeline to link events in her life with “public” events. I showed less patience than I should as she couldn’t remember the day, or even month, in 1943 when she moved to a teaching job in Bradford after watching as her flat in Norwich was hit by incendiary bombs. She said, “You’ll never know what it was like to not know what the next day would bring. Of course I can’t remember which day it was!” I wish I could talk to her now, and say, “Oh, but I do understand a little now!”

This issue has photos of all 55 Window Wonderland entries (pages 21-23) and the official answer sheet on page 26. There are also fascinating photos of the 2001 opening of the Island Pond Wood (pages 24 and 25), and of some of the Festive Fairy Doors in the Woodland (page 43). The photo on the back cover of the flooded footpath between Yew Tree Close and the Playing Fields reminds me how wet this winter has been. I hope we’ll be able to fix the path soon. Looking for ways forward, the front cover shows the refurbished signpost at the crossroads, with some background on page 42, and pages 14-15 has updates on the new bus timetable. The new lockdown allows places of worship to be open, and page 18 has information from St Mary’s on their plans.

There are also obituaries and notices on pages 12-13, 16, 17, and 32. It would be good to have some births to report. There are regular reports from The Parish Council, The WI and the Over 60's, and The Ex-Launton Boy is on pages 38-40.

Launton Parish Council Meeting held on Thursday 3 December 2020 at 7.30pm online via Zoom

Councillors present Mr James Allpress, Mrs Lizzie Chisholm, Mr Chris Fox (Vice Chair), Mr Mike Murphy, Mr Ed Sanders, Mrs Lesley Thompson, Mr Simon Turner (Chair) Apologies None In attendance The Clerk, Mrs Jane Olds; Cllr David Hughes (from 7.40 to 8pm); Cllr Ian Corkin (from 8.05 to 8.35pm); OCC Group Manager Network Co-ordination (until 8.05pm); six members of the public East West Rail No representatives attended the meeting. However it is understood that the Station Road closure will not now take place until May (postponed from January) to allow for other roadworks and closures first. The (Launton) Bicester Road was scheduled to be closed at the railway bridge for eight weeks, but the timing for this was still to be confirmed.

Mulberry Homes The developers had been invited to the meeting but didn’t attend. A large number of concerns were raised at the meeting which the Parish Council was taking to the officers concerned.

The OCC Road Agreements Officer had visited the site and has requested that vehicles should be jet washed before leaving the site and that the road should be cleaned more frequently.

However, the Parish Council has subsequently met with the developers and hopes to be able to hold a virtual public meeting early in 2021.

Reports from District and County Councillors Councillor Hughes (CDC) and Councillor Corkin (OCC) attended the meeting. Both mentioned the Mulberry Development (although most of it is not in Councillor Corkin’s OCC remit) and were keeping watch on the situation.

Following the October flooding which affected many areas, Councillor Corkin had met with representatives from Thames Water. He asked villagers to note and report any issues with the pumping station to Thames Water so that the company could build up a comprehensive picture.

The Stagecoach S5 bus service was under severe pressure as it was not subsidised and the decision had been taken to reduce the service to some Launton Lines January 2021 | Page 5

of the villages it currently served. Councillor Corkin had been meeting with officers at County Hall to work on a temporary solution. More information about the new service is on page XX of this issue.

Councillor Corkin had flagged up the road and drainage defects in West End a year ago and had been told that it would be scheduled for surface dressing and repair in 2020. Unfortunately, this didn’t happen, but it had been added to the 2021 list.

There was still some money left in the County Councillor priority fund (applications close on 31 January 2021); Councillor Corkin would prefer to be able to support community groups with this final funding, so if any groups in the village have a project, please do get in touch with him at Ian.Corkin@Oxfordshire.gov.uk Finance The Finance Report was available on the Parish Council website.

Census The 2021 Census day is 21 March. The Office for National Statistics intends that it will be the first primarily digital collection of data, but don’t worry if you don’t have access to the internet, don’t want to do it online or need help completing the form - there will be other ways of completing it and we’ll know more soon.

Planning All planning applications, which include the links to Cherwell’s Planning Portal, are put on the Parish Council website when they are received (www.launton-pc.gov.uk - in the Agenda and Minutes section). If a villager has concerns about a planning application, they are welcome to come along to Parish Council meetings to raise those concerns.

Village Matters Parish Hall We are still waiting for the final copy from the Parish Council’s solicitor.

The grant for S106 funds for the tables and chairs has been applied for.

Bus Shelter Repairs The shelters on Station Road and Bicester Road by Sherwood Close will be repaired shortly. We will also be looking at installing proper noticeboards in the shelters.

We will be investigating the costs of a new vehicle activated sign to replace the current one near the school but we have decided not to do traffic monitoring around the village until all the East / West Rail and Mulberry Homes works have been completed as it wouldn’t be possible to get an accurate reflection at the moment.

Yew Tree Path East West Rail had very kindly offered to provide some hardcore to shore up the horribly muddy section of footpath between Yew Tree field and the Playing Fields. We were all ready to go, but at the eleventh hour were advised by the OCC footpaths team that the drainage for the area has to be sorted out first. We’re now in discussions about how best to progress this and are really sorry that we got everyone’s hopes up (see page XX for an update).

Village Support Group The support group was still active and ready to spring back into action.

Bicester Motion The Parish Council attended a preview of their Experience Quarter video consultation. The video is now available for all to see on the Bicester Motion website at www.bicestermotion.com/the-experience-quarterplanning-consultation/; you can also make comments on the page. A full planning application is expected shortly.

Police Winter Burglary Campaign We were sorry to hear about the burglary in Blenheim Drive just as we received notification of the Police campaign. The Rural Policing Team are intending to have more high-visibility patrols and leaflet drops, but please be vigilant.

Facebook and mailing lists The Parish Council has its own Facebook page. Please ‘like’ our page at https://www.facebook.com/LauntonParishCouncilPage/ We try to post useful information as we receive it but we also use the Parish Council website to keep everyone informed. We are unable to monitor it 24 hours a day, so if you would like to contact us or have an opinion about something, email (or even a letter) is the best way to get in contact.

Advanced Warning of Road Closures

As at 23 December this is the programme of road closures and controls known over the next few months From December until 17 February Marsh Gibbon, Bicester Road is CLOSED for haul road construction and bridge demolition work From 8 to 13 January Charbridge Lane will have traffic signals On 25 and 26 January and then from 1 February to 1 April, the Launton Bicester Road over the bridge will be controlled by traffic lights for bridge refurbishment works From 25 February to 7 April: Marsh Gibbon, Station Road will be CLOSED for the demolition of the underbridge From 8 April to 11 May Marsh Gibbon, Bicester Road will be CLOSED for the installation of the new underbridge From 12 May 2021 to 25 April 2022 Launton, Station Road will be CLOSED from beyond Grange Farm for the construction of the new overbridge And, the Blackthorn Road will have to be closed for connections to the Mulberry development, but we have been assured by OCC Highways that only one road out of Launton can be closed at any one time and the developers will have to liaise with Highways.

Yew Tree Close Footpath

Launton Parish Council has been working with East West Rail to look at the footpath between Yew Tree Close and the sports field which has been muddy and flooded particularly over the winter months (see photo on page 44, back cover).

The ditch is owned by the Playing Fields Association with the official Public Right of Way crossing the ditch falling under Oxfordshire County Council’s jurisdiction.

The plan was to scrape out the path through the gap, to lay a pipe to aid the water flow and to cover the gap with aggregate of two sizes, donated

by EWR. Although not a permanent solution, it was hoped that this might make the path safer for users.

The Oxfordshire County Council Footpath’s Officer pointed out that trying to fix the gap without addressing the ditch water flow would result in more flooding of the footpath and more mud and flooding towards the play area on the sports field.

LPC met with the Playing Fields Association and the villagers who had volunteered to use their machinery to do the job, at the site and looked at the ditches and the general flooding in the fields behind Yew Tree.

It was decided that the ditches do need to be cleared and we need to establish where the ditch water is draining to further down the village.

The Parish Council will liaise with the Footpath Officer to suggest that Cherwell District Council who owns the field behind Yew Tree first sort out the flooding and the drainage before we try to address the footpath between the two fields. Hopefully a grant could be applied for to sort this.

In the meantime, this footpath is only usable with great care and Wellington boots. The Parish Council will ask CDC whether they have a temporary surface to put over the flooding as a stop-gap to make it a bit easier to use.

The Parish Council would like to thank the enormous response from the villages to help with this project and to thank them for their patience and trying to put this problem right.

Gerald Tucker: 1928-2020

Gerald was born in Aylesbury in 1928 and was an only child. Sadly his mother died when he was young so he was largely brought up by his father.

After attending the local primary school, Gerald won a place at Aylesbury Grammar School. Here became interested in stamp collecting and was a keen member of the rabbit breeding group something very much encouraged to ease the meat shortage in wartime. He also joined the air force cadets and would cycle to RAF Westcott; there, provided he was in uniform, he would take advantage of free trips for cadets, several hundred feet above the local countryside. During the war, a couple from London were billeted with them and Gerald kept in touch until they both died many years later.

Gerald celebrated passing his final exams and leaving school by setting off with another keen cyclist to ride to Scotland. His letters home containing a fascinating account of life in 1944. Also at this time, photography began to form a large part of his life, which continued for the next sixty years.

National Service with the RAF was the next stage in Gerald’s life. Most of the time he was stationed in Gloucester; but he used his leave to make his very first trips to France, beginning in 1946 by cycling to Paris. Over the years, he ventured further across western and northern Europe. often with a number of ex-schoolfriends, either camping or youth hostelling; by bike, in the early years, progressing to motor bikes and, later, cars.

In 1949 Gerald became a scientific civil servant and took up a post in the newly opened Rocket Propulsion Establishment at what had previously been RAF Westcott. He spent all his working life there, in the liquid rocket motors division, until he retired in 1989.

In the 1950s he was a very active member of the Aylesbury Photographic Society, often developing and printing his own photos. In 1959, he decided to learn Spanish and attended evening classes at High Wycombe, where he met Pat; 18 months later they were married at the church in the village of Hughenden, where she lived. They rented property locally until in 1962 they moved to Launton, where they have lived ever since.

Their children David, Alan and Helen were born in 1969, 1971 and 1973 respectively. Every school holiday and bank holiday from Easter to October was an opportunity for the family to go away in their caravan. There was an annual visit to Aunt Gwen in Bridlington; often trips which included walking long stretches of the South West Coast Path; and every year three weeks touring in Europe, including, as the children grew older, a lot of walking in Launton Lines January 2021 | Page 12

the Alps and the Pyrenees. These holidays usually also included visits to their many French friends on the way.

While the children attended Launton School, Gerald became a Governor and helped the headmistress by driving the school mini-bus, especially when taking the older pupils on youth hostelling weekends. He also served as a Parish Councillor during these years. However, Gerald’s greatest interest was to establish a twinning link with a similar sized community in Normandy, named Gavray, which was achieved in 1985.

After he retired, Gerald took the caravan to Caen (not far from Gavray) and for six months he studied French at the university there. When he returned, he served as a volunteer car driver for the local hospitals, taking patients to attend appointments, especially to the Churchill Hospital for routine dialysis.

This he did for ten years.

Gerald and Pat were delighted to welcome Guy into the family when he married Helen on her birthday in the year 2000.

There was further joy when Gerald and Pat became grandparents: Elizabeth was born in 2003 and Mary the following year. The many visits to Launton with their parents, David and Angela, have always been specially happy times.

Gerald had been a keen chess player, and in later years, he enjoyed a variety of word games, such as Scrabble. He had had a pet dog for much of his life, and in recent years he always loved having Alan’s dog to stay.

Sadly Helen died in 2010, by which time Gerald had already been showing serious signs of ageing. Because of his failing eyesight, he had stopped driving at the age of 75 and had given up most of his other interests; furthermore, he was becoming ever more withdrawn.

Four years ago he had a fall in the street and, although there was nothing seriously wrong medically beyond increasing frailty, it became very necessary to have a carer every day to help look after him. Eventually even that was not enough, and Gerald was moved to Cherwood House, where he had expert 24-hour care for the last 20 months of his life.

Despite the restrictions on visiting because of the pandemic, Pat was able to visit Gerald on his 92nd birthday on May 29th, and she noticed that he was the first person she had seen for three months who had had a recent haircut.

Gerald died peacefully at Cherwood House on November 28th.

Bus services update We now have confirmation that Launton and Langford will have a new Stagecoach bus service from 4 January 2021 after the withdrawal of the S5.

Launton’s new service will be route 28 and Langford’s will be route 27.

The new 27 service will operate via London Road to Langford, and the 28 service will run via Launton Road to Launton. The current timetable for the Launton Service is on page 15 opposite, but it may be changed to allow for road closures and restrictions in the future as work is done on the EWR project. Check on Stagecoach website at www.stagecoachbus.com/timetables and put the service no (28) into the search window.

The S5 will now operate between Glory Farm, Bicester and Oxford via Gosford and Summertown. Launton and Langford will no longer be served by this route.

Further information about other services: The H5 service from Bicester will continue to run hourly to the JR Hospital and Headington via Merton and Islip on Mondays to Saturdays. Ahmed Ghouse: 1931-2020 Sadly, Ahmed passed away on 21 November, nine days before his 89th birthday.

Daphne and Ahmed moved to Launton in 2010 from near Ely in Cambridgeshire, to be nearer their sons and grandsons, after Ahmed suffered a stroke in 2009.

He was a cheerful gentleman and will be greatly missed by his family.

Vera (Elizabeth) Gold: 1914-2020

Mrs Vera Gold died in her sleep on Saturday 28 November. She reached the age of 106 years on 4 October 2020, having spent many years in the village after her marriage to Arthur Gold. In the village she was known as Elizabeth, but will always be Auntie Vera to her extended family.

Although she had been housebound for some years, she had been an active member of the Over 60’s, St. Mary’s Church, the WI and Launton Friends of Cancer Research UK during her time in Launton.

Grange Mews News January 2021 Commercial Offices, Industrial Units and Storage for Lease

Opening the book for the New Year has already shown optimism from the more than last lustre of 2020.

The birth of two granddaughters has for our family shown great optimism on the part of Annabel and Martyn and Alice and Sam. We welcome Arabella and Charlotte.

The news of the vaccination centre operating from Bicester Heritage, with the co-operation of all the surgeries in Bicester and with volunteer helpers too, augurs well for a rapid roll out of either and or both current vaccines which are available.

‘Building bridges’ is supposed to bring people together and in the long term the A4421 and the Station Rd bridges will do that but there is going to be a lot of interruption before this happens.

There will be disrupted traffic to and from Grange Mews.

EWR continually update us on the traffic situation but I wonder about the start when I look at the delays so far at the Station Rd. construction site We will remain open for all services, so for guests, for staff, for deliveries and for residents et al.

CHURCH SERVICES AT ST MARY’S

Coronavirus precautions Following the recent Government announcements public worship continues to be permitted even in Tier 4 areas. During December we began our return to services in St Mary’s Church and will continue this through January. There is great concern to ensure this is done safely, and measures taken (in line with official recommendations) include: pre-registering for attendance (please contact one of the Churchwardens to register - contact details below); track and trace in place; social distancing between bubbles observed; face coverings worn; no congregational singing; thorough cleaning when there is less than 48 hours between openings (Government advice is that the virus does not persist beyond that period).

We appreciate this means the experience of worshipping in church is very different, but it is a joy to be in our lovely church building again, even with the restrictions. With the favourable news about vaccines there are good reasons to be optimistic and we look forward to, and pray for, the time we can hold our services again normally.

Island Pond Wood Association AGM

The Friends of Island Pond Wood Association Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 28 January 2021 at 7.30 pm via Zoom.

Launton Women’s Institute Report for December 2020 In December our Members suffered a sad loss when we learned that Liz (Colyer) passed away very suddenly and some of us subsequently attended her funeral and thanksgiving Services. As a result of the pandemic during which we have been unable to meet it may be that Liz was not well known to some Members but it is likely that all will remember the meticulously prepared craft evenings she ran for us. These were talents that were valued in her rôle as a respected Denman tutor. Since we have had to suspend our customary handing out of birthday posies, Members have received one of Liz’s handmade cards in the relevant month and the December recipients were Elaine, Win, and Katharine.

We are hoping to publish an obituary in a future edition of Launton Lines but in the meantime those who would like to record tributes and memories, post photographs or make a donation might be interested in the following memorial website: https://muchloved.com (Search - Elizabeth Colyer) On our usual December Meeting evening (the second Thursday of the month) we held a hugely challenging Christmas quiz, courtesy of Jenny and via Zoom, which was magnificently compèred by Father Christmas. Also we ensured that all Members received a handmade Christmas card: the production of these had been started by Liz and then finished by Cathy - so our thanks to her.

In common with many organisations we are still generally in a state of limbo and I have heard 2020 being described as “a year that keeps on giving!” Let us hope and trust that we can apply this expression in the coming year, but without any hint of irony!

The History of Island Pond Wood - part 4

The Grand Opening of the wood was expected to follow soon after the planting but an animal pandemic caused by foot and mouth disease caused a major delay. So it was that 20 and 21 October 2001 were the chosen dates. There were fun events on the Saturday in reasonable weather but Sunday was not so kind as you can see in the pictures on page 24 opposite.

It absolutely poured with rain at various times in the day. The official opening was conducted by Hugo Brunner, Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, followed by a ceremonial walk around the emerging wood.

The vicar of Launton, Margaret Mullins, conducted a short service of consecration and then took a symbolic yew tree across to the island on a raft constructed by Sea Scouts (probably the most hazardous thing she did in her time in Launton). Organiser Ed Hamill had promised that the event would be attended by a giant in the field of entertainment, and so it proved when the star of the recent Village Players Jack and the Beanstalk put in an appearance with two helpers. After all this excitement all that was left to do was to wait for the trees to grow.

Crimewatch Report for January 2021

Over the New Year holiday there were break ins to sheds and garages in Station Road and Bicester Road in Launton. There were many alerts on village facebook groups, and some security cameras managed to secure images of possible perpetrators.

On 3 January the police reported discovering a large number of tools and other materials following an incident in Brill, and asked people who had been broken into to identify their missing items, quoting reference INC-20210103-0189.

Below is the information about reporting crime and suspicious activity that was in the November issue of Launton Lines. Reporting all incidents, no matter how minor, is important as it helps the police build up their information databases.

LAUNTON OVER 60s CLUB REPORT - December 2020 By the time you read this, Christmas will be over and we hope everyone had as good a time as possible. Unfortunately, since my last report in September, things do not seem to have improved very much.

Our holiday to Saundersfoot in June 2021 sadly will not happen as our tour operator, Isle of Wight Tours, has gone into liquidation - one of the many business casualties this year. Daphne has worked hard to get our deposits returned to us and you should all have received them by now. At her instigation, we have also received a grant of ÂŁ250 from the Co-op.

We were looking forward to having our usual fish and chip lunch in February, but this is now out of the question. But we are staying positive and looking hopefully towards Easter for the start of our 2021 meetings. By then, with a bit of luck, we will all have had our vaccinations and be able to meet up again.

We will keep you all informed - things are changing all the time.

Although there have been no meetings, many of us have kept in touch and a phone call is always nice to receive.

Warning of a Phone Scam We received the following in the Launton Lines in box from Terry Vale on 4 December, “for the next issue”. As the January 2021 issue wouldn’t be out until at least 6 January we sent the information on to Launton Facebook page for quick distribution. Here for all Launton Lines readers is what Terry said.

Just a few lines to let people know of scam phone callers claiming to be from BT. I had a call today just after 09.00 and I was told that my internet connection was being tracked by scammers I was asked to download a program on my computer called Team Viewer and they also asked that I log into my online bank Team Viewer lets other people see what is on your computer and they can take control of it.

At this I smelt a rat and asked them to prove they were from BT. They just said they were. At this stage I just hung up the phone; moments later it rang again - it was same people, so I hung up again.

They rang again several times during the next hour, but I ignored the phone.

I went on the BT web site and looked at security. It states that BT will never phone people up asking for them to download programs and will never ask for people to go online to their bank.

I filled in the scam report that ask for date and time of scam, and phone number if it shows.

I have checked with my own bank and nothing has changed since I last logged on a few days ago Just be aware of this bunch of scum bags.

A Vet’s Voice: Jasper’s Claw Foot

Jasper is a very gentle 14 year old Staffie. Sadly, his recent life has been

marred by an orthopaedic problem which made standing and walking very uncomfortable for him. At some stage in his life, the nerve function in the font of his foot had stopped working, which meant he was unable to open up his foot to place it down correctly (the equivalent of you not being able to open your hand).

This failure in his extensor muscles meant that his flexor tendons and muscles became tighter as they had nothing to pull against. The result was a contracted foot which meant that he couldn’t use the tough pad tissue of his toes to take his weight but instead he was left to walk on his claws, which was very painful.

I had seen something similar in a cat before and hoped that some surgery might improve Jasper’s situation. Under anaesthetic I was able to cut the flexor tendons which were forcing his foot to contract. The toe joints were

also very stiff due to months of being fixed in their flexed position but with some manipulation they loosened up.

Things looked promising but the real test would be when Jasper’s bandage was removed and he could try to use his modified foot once again. Thankfully, the transformation for Jasper was spectacular. Within days he was able to place his foot more normally for the first time in many months. By 5 days post op he seemed pretty comfortable and most of the time his foot bore weight normally on the pads.

We expect Jasper to continue to improve as his foot relaxes and he gets better at using the modified version.

The owner was very pleased with the improvement and said “I know he’s old, and he may not have a long time left; but we just wanted him to be as comfortable as possible.”

We trust that Jasper’s improvement will continue and that he can enjoy his old age in comfort!

Harrowing though it was to receive the call from the vet notifying us of her death, the alternative of finding her dead in the road would have been far worse. We would also like to express our thanks to the staff at Bicester Vets who were on call even in these difficult times.

150 Years Ago from The Bicester Herald

29 January 1871 MUSIC AND RECITATIVE ENTERTAINMENT AT THE NATIONAL SCHOOL-ROOM, LAUNTON On Monday evening, January 23, the National School-room, Launton, the fourth annual literary and musical entertainment was given by the scholars attending the school to their parents and friends. Although the night was stor[m]y there was a large attendance - the room being filled in every part. The proceedings were opened by the National Anthem, sung by a chorus selected from the scholars, under the direction of Mr Thomas Newton, who presided at the harmonium. Miss Elizabeth Taylor then gave a recitation, “Lucy Gray” and went through the piece very creditably. “My First Copy Book” was next recited by Master James Massey, who “did his best” very nicely.

Longfellow’s admirable poem “The Village Blacksmith” was next recited by Miss Susan Cox, and was followed by a piece entitled “It’s only a little thing” recited by Master William Stockford. “The Young Soldier” was next recited by Master Walter Holiday, who acted up to his duty in a very creditable manner. The programme was then varied by the chorus singing Rule Britannia very effectively. Miss Catherine West then recited “The Idle Drop.” A dialogue followed, entitled “Just One Day” taken between Miss Elizabeth Jones and Master John Taylor, and created great amusement.

“The Dervish and the Camel” was then recited by Master George Stockford; who was followed by Miss Mary Ann Cartwright, who recited “Two Sides to a Tale” in a manner which elicited the approbation of the audience. The chorus then sang The Canadian Boat Song. “More Haste, Less Speed” was then recited by Master John Taylor, and proved very interesting.

The next piece entitled “The Wind in a frolic” was recited by Miss Martha R Reeves in a very amusing and creditable manner. “Business First and Pleasure After,” recited by Master Frederick Massey, proved very acceptable. The chorus then sang The Roast Beef of Old England. Miss Phoebe Jones then recited “The Power of Little Words” which was followed by a dialogue on “Courage” between Master Harry Parrot and Master Frederick Massey. “The Negro Slave Boy” was then recited by Miss Elizabeth Jones.

An American chorus, Beautiful Land of Rest was then sung by the children.

Master James West created some amusement with his “Philosopher’s Scales”, and the lesson he inculcated was evidently well received. The prettiest selection of the evening, “Genevra”, was very well recited by Miss Jane Ann Massey. An amusing conversational piece entitled “The Sham Launton Lines January 2021 | Page 36

Sailor” was next taken up by Masters James West, Thomas Tebby and George Stockford, who seemed to have been well trained. The children then sang Ye Mariners of England. “The Fool and the Baron” was then recited by Miss Keziah Bannister. “Drover and the Tinker’s Dog” excited considerable amusement, as recited by Master Harry Parrott. “Moses at the Fair” was well recited by Miss Emma Shears. Another conversational selection entitled “The First Patch” was then given by Misses Jane Massey, Elizabeth Taylor and Susan Cox, and Master Arthur Foster, and received its due need of applause. A comic sketch “The Emperor’s Drive” was very nicely recited by Master Thomas Tebby, though the audience seemed to lose there[sic] appreciation of it. The programme was concluded by the chorus singing Heaven Is My Home.

[After the entertainment the Launton vicar The Rev JC Blomfield gave an impassioned speech about the importance of education to both children and society, and announced that there were plans to raise money to add another room to the school, and he hoped that both parents and children would make the most of the opportunities offered by the school.]

MEMORIES OF AN EX-LAUNTON BOY

This month the ex-Launton Boy thinks (and writes) about what to say, and about repeating himself if he writes about Christmas again. He remembers retold stories from his youth, how it can develop as it is retold time after time. Then he writes about dementia, “such a cruel phenomenon”, and his experiences in his close family.

I’ve been sitting here for over half an hour wondering to myself, “What should I write about this month?” As you might expect, inevitably the subject of Christmas keeps staring me in the face. But then I ask myself, “How many times can I write about Christmas without ending up repeating myself?”

Now there is something to consider in itself, the question of repeating one’s self.

As a child growing up in Launton, I recall how fascinating it was when I heard certain people in the village, usually very elderly people, though not always, constantly repeating themselves. Sometimes I even found it hilariously funny, especially when in the context of the way some of the people, who shall remain nameless, used to conduct their conversations.

I refer of course to those conversations that went along the lines of; “And I said ‘blah blah blah’ and she said ‘blahty blahty blah’, and I said, ‘No! Well I can tell you I said, Heating Plumbing Servicing Blah blah blah’, and she said ....” and so it would go on and on and on so Domestic Oil and Gas Servicing that what could have been conveyed within two minutes took instead, half Installation and Maintenance an hour at least. Talk about whiling Gas Safe Registered away the day, more like wasting half a day, I thought.

here and there to try to make it even juicier than the previous day’s delivery.

Now, without wishing to sound the least bit sexist about it, the fact is that this kind of behaviour was most discernable among women, but note, I said “mostly”, for I have to say that in all honesty, it was not exclusively women.

Oh no, there were men in the village who adopted the same method of gossiping.

I remember a particular event some twenty five years or so ago when a particular gentleman from the village encountered me outside of the Methodist Church in Bicester when, what was I thought, going to be a brief exchange of pleasantries turned out to delay me in my mission by at least half an hour by giving me a detailed exchange of conversation between him and, I forget who, literally word for word, pleasant though it was.

And then when one gets older, one begins to realise that in a growing number of cases, as a result I am sure, of people tending to live longer, the matter of repetition becomes more and more noticeable, but it is no longer funny. In fact, it becomes worryingly painful, especially when it manifests itself within a member of your own family.

At first there is a tendency towards denial. Then you start to get phone calls from your own mother and she is, in her own mind, informing you of some fantastic new revelation that turns out to have been exactly the same revelation that she had put to you the previous week, and alarmingly, the previous week to that. Then there is the natural inclination to tell her that she has actually told you this twice or more times already in case of distressing her, so you play along as if it was the first time you had heard whatever it was.

It took my wife Julie, who had experienced this development, or should I say decline, in her own mother’s growing mental incapacity to make me realise and accept the fact that my mum was in early stage dementia. And what absolutely convinced me of this in the end was one day, during my fortnightly visits to her from here in Kent, I was cutting her toe nails and she started to tell me how she had been speaking to a certain next door neighbour earlier in the week.

The next door neighbour to whom she was referring lived at 52, Whitehouse Common Road, Sutton Coldfield (then in Warwickshire), back in the days when my mum lived at number 50 with her parents (because she couldn’t continue living in the same house as my paternal grandmother), the house in Launton Lines January 2021 | Page 39

which in fact I was born in December 1947. We moved from there to the old army huts at Chesterton in 1949 prior to eventually moving into 2, Green View, Station Road, Launton, when my paternal grandmother, who had lived there from when it was built in 1939, died. That particular next door neighbour of mum’s back in 1947 was already an elderly woman herself back then and would have died decades prior to mum supposedly having last had a conversation with her.

Dementia is such a cruel phenomenon, as is the case with many forms of mental illness. Sadly treated as the Cinderella of healthcare, we’ve had so many promises from the government to invest not only money but further research, time and effort into mental health with the promise to put it on a level par with healthcare in general, but still we wait and wait. Now, that would be a tremendous Christmas present to the people of this nation, the knowledge and belief that the government was being serious about its’ promise. Wow! I’ve just seen a flight of pink elephants with flashing lights go swanning past my window.

So, how will families with such distressed elderly family members residing in residential care and nursing homes (for their own safety) cope this Christmas, even if restrictions are lifted temporarily by the government regarding visiting? Should they refrain from hugging and kissing them because of the danger of Covid and if so, will that cause even more distress than if one chose, in the interests of safety, not to visit at all? For some that will be a difficult one to ponder and wrestle with.

Depending on the government’s reassessment of the Covid tier arrangements within the next couple of days of me writing this, I may not be able to get to see any members of my family living in Launton, Bicester or Northampton as I live in a Tier 3 area which happens to be currently in the top three worst-hit areas in the country, added to which we have now been informed that we have a new strain of the Covid virus rapidly spreading here in the South East.

So yes, this is going to be after all, a Christmas with a difference, and one which we could all well do without.

Following the introduction of Tier 4 restrictions, the Health Walks have been suspended.

The walks will resume once a lower level of restriction is achieved.

Walks are currently permissible in Tier 3 and below.

Diary Dates: January - February 2021

As this is being written the Prime Minister has announced an extended period of what seems to be national lockdown. This will clearly affect the slow revival community activities and events. We have decided to only list those public events that we know will be going ahead online so we list the online Parish Council meetings via Zoom (see page 8) on Thursday 7 January and Thursday 4 February 2021. Some services at St Mary’s will continue, see page 18 for the rules and details .

The Health Walks are suspended (see page 41). The other date is the copy deadline for the February issue of Launton Lines. This will be Wednesday 20 January: send words and photos to launtonlines@launton.org.

The story of the signpost at the crossroads You may not have noticed that the four fingers on the signpost at the crossroads are back in place (see the front cover of this issue). Over two years ago the Poundon finger was seriously bent by an HGV reversing into West End to try and turn round to avoid restrictions on Blackthorn Road.

It took a few months before the bent finger was taken away by OCC Highways to be repaired. There is a very cunning locking system on the post so individual fingers can be removed and replaced without affecting the security of the rest of the fingers. So months passed as we waited for the finger to be returned, and eventually the Parish Clerk enquired of Highways about their schedule for returning it to the post.

Apparently, their reply was, “Glad you asked. We had lost track of where it came from. Now that we know it’ll be back soon.”

And sure enough it was soon back in place. But many villagers have asked, “Are there so many places with a crossroads that are three and a quarter miles from Poundon? And why not then go out and check on all signposts to see which are missing a Poundon finger?” But we’re glad to see the signpost back in working order. We are just surprised that we can’t tell you the day that the finger was replaced. It just somehow reappeared and no-one noticed.
