You can keep using the 17 Bus!
The OCCTeam has recently managed to secure funding to ensure that the 17 bus service through Launton will continue for the next three years. And, they’vemanaged to negotiate an improvement to a more regular service throughout the day in both directions, to both Bicester and Aylesbury. Please keep using it! If the service is not used, it may be difficult to justify extending it in future: so it’sthe old cry of “Use it or lose it!” The latest timetable is on page 7 of this issue of Launton Lines and also on the Parish Council website at this information/bus-timetable/www.launton-pc.gov.uk/useful-url:

So, if you've got stamps without barcodes(apart from special picture and Christmas ones) you’llneed to get them swapped out for new ones by 31 January 2023. Royal Mail has organised a ‘stamp swap’ so that you can simply replace your old stamps (including really old ‘standard’ ones) with the new barcodedones. However, this can’tbe done at the Post Officeyou need to send them away. stamps?iid=HP_M1_BARCODEDSTAMPSfromButdon’tpanic!It'squiteeasy-youjustdownloadthe‘SwapOutForm’theRoyalMailwebsite:www.royalmail.com/sending/barcodedCount how many old stamps you’vegot to send back, calculate the total value and put the completed form and the stamps into an

envelope, and pop it in the post box - you don’teven need to save a stamp to post them - it’sa freepost address! The stamps are exchanged at the current market value: First Class are £0.95 each Second Class are £0.68 each First Class Large Letter are £1.45 Second Class Large letter are £1.05 Please note, though, that this is a Royal Mail initiative and is nothing to do with the Post Office in Costcutter. However, Costcutterdoes have copies of the forms if you are not able to print it off yourself. Just ask Nixsonor Sagarika! LauntonLinesSeptember2022|Page13

We met this month on a very hot evening, again a depleted group due mainly to holidays, but still very Firstenjoyable.wehadofficial business and it was great to have Helenback in the chair for “One night only” as Gayewas away. Only one birthday in August which was Gwenon the 8th.We discussed updating the website and Facebookpage and publicity to increase our membership as we have sadly decreased in numbers since the pandemic. We are also looking forward to our coach trip next Spring and will be voting on a choice of destinations over the next couple of months. Our speakers for the evening were Lorraine and Sue, fundraisersfor Homeless Oxfordshire. They gave us a great insight into the many problems facing homeless people and the wide range of work done to support them, and to campaign for solutions: they had lots of success stories. We also had a collection to help them in their Ourwork.next social will be a walk and lunch to Annie’sTea Room at Thruppand hopefully it will have cooled down a bit by then. Our next meeting is on 8 September in the Parish Hall at 7.30pmwhen our speaker will be NicholasGill talking about The life and songs of ColePorter. We welcome anybody who would care to join us as a guest for the evening. JaneLeach

Launton Harvest Thanksgiving Services
150 Years Ago: from The Bicester Herald September 1872 Friday 20 September
On Sunday last, September 15, the annual thanksgiving services in Launton church to Almighty God for the safe in-gathering of harvest, were held. The church was decorated for the occasion. In the east window were two pots of flowers and evergreens with a cross in the centre. At each side of the window were very ancient paintings referring to the four Evangelists. Those on the left being Saints Matthew and Mark, and on the right Saints Luke and John. There were also some small designs with “T.H.E.” Along the side of the altar rails were several green house plants in pots in full bloom. Across the chancel on a white ground in different coloured letters was the text “The earth is the Lord’sand the fullness thereof.” The pulpit was also decorated with flowers and foreign grain. On the left side of the chancel was a motto “Peace and Plenty.” The pillars and candlesticks were entwined with evergreens, and the font was adorned with several kinds of fruit and flowers, and two sheaves of corn, with a cross of moss on the top. In the north aisle were designs of evergreens and flowers. Over the door another ancient painting representing lilies. The services were partly choral. Special hymns for harvest thanksgiving were sung, including Hymn 360, We plough the fields and scatter (Hymns Ancient and Modern.) The Rev. J.C. Blomfield, M.A., rector, read the prayers, and the Rev. F. Yorke, M.A., vicar of Fritwell, preached the sermon, that in the morning from Jeremiah viii, 20, “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.” In his discourse he said he had come to tell them of the heathens in their own lands. In one place there were three parts of the people who did not attend any place of worship whatever, and it was for them he would ask their assistance that day. In the afternoon, the preacher chose for his text Galatiansii, latter part of the 20th verse. At the end of each service a collection was made on behalf of the home Mission Society, which amounted to £3 17s9d.

ThomasEdwardSansom, stall proprietor, Launton, was charged with having been drunk and quarrelsome, and refused to quit The Bull public house when requested to do so by the landlady, at Launton on September 7th.From the evidence of MrsFreeman, the landlady, and SusanCox, domestic servant at the house, it appeared that on Saturday September 7, about one o’clock in the day, defendant went into the house the worse for drink, and called for beer. Mrs Freeman refused to draw him any when he turned saucy and abusive. - Defendant said he went in the house to have a row with a man, who had set some chaps on to upset his stall. They began turning “rusty” with him, and he turned “rusty” with them. He was not drunk, for he had only had two pints of small beer. Defendant was ordered to pay fine and costs 9s6d, or seven days. The cash was paid.
[
Editor’snote: Tom Sansomwas 18 years old at the time of the incident. I have no idea what sort of stall he had. In the census he is simply listed as a farm labourer. I have no other information about him other than some more appearances in court over the years. JosephFreeman and his wife were about to give up running The Bull Inn, and a WilliamFreeman took over. There were a great many WilliamFreemansin Launton in the Nineteenth Century, and it is not always certain which is which; nor if Joseph(who came from Piddington) and Williamwere related.]

This will take place in a beautiful location: the front garden of the Old Rectory and the Church and Churchyard, on 3 September from 2pm until Come4pm.along and enjoy all the stalls we have, these will include cakes, plants, produce, books, tombola, toys as well as a Children’sCorner of games and fun. There will be a craft activity that you can help with, which involves making an autumnal tree (and we will use this in the Family Service the next day at 11amin the Church). Also, as part of the StMary’sFayre, there will be the exhibition “What Autumn means to me” in the Church to enjoy. Do look around and see all the talent in our community and wonder at the different and unique ways in which the theme has been interpreted. Then you can relax with a cuppa, enjoy some cake and have a chat.

This month the ex-Launton Boy responds to the weather (who wouldn’t) and recalls long summer holidays from his youth (as he says, we tend to remember the good things) and then shares a poem he has come across about “Back in the days…”. Then he asks the crucial question: “How many of us would really go back to ‘then’?”. Whew! Hot or what? We certainly have enjoyed some beautifully hot and sunny weather on the one hand, but on the other hand, how the gardens and allotments and farm crops have suffered as a consequence. We are never totally happy are we, when it comes to the British weather, yet it always seems a very safe subject for discussion with no matter who you talk to. What would we do if we didn’thave the weather to talk about? Here in Kent, you might find this difficult to believe, but it is absolutely true in that it has been so hot, the apples in the orchards have actually been cooking on the trees and as such are unfit for harvesting. But isn’tit strange that when we look back over the years and remember our six weeks long summer holidays from school, we seem only to remember the long hot sunny days of summer, somehow convincing ourselves that they were longer and hotter than they probably were. Is it a form of self-preservation, I sometimes wonder, to remember the good things and naturally block out the not so good without realising it. Oh sure, if there are bad times from the distant past, it is often a case of having to force ourselves to recall them for one reason or another, but it’sthe good times that tend to linger. With that thought in mind, I happened to come across a piece of poetry on one of the Sapper websitesto which I belong (Sappers being soldiers of the Corps of Royal Engineers, of which I was one.......and still am, for once a Sapper...always a Sapper), and it virtually says it all. Whether you are in to poetry in any form or not, I would very much like to share this with you as I am sure that for many, it will conjure up some very happy memories of your own, especially from the 1950’sand early 60’s.

Brings a tear to the eye doesn’tit! There are so many truths in there if we care to look back and remember. And then the world moved on and we all grew up and walked our various paths through life, some more successfully than others, depending on how one measures success of course. But secretly, how many of us I wonder, if given the opportunity, would choose to go back to then? On the one hand, with what we all know now by way of our life’sexperiences, I’m sure there are many who would like to go back fully armed with the knowledge we have acquired and make a fresh and possibly completely different start to life. But the most precious commodity of all would be lost......that of childhood innocence. The saddest thing of all, in my view, is the eventual loss of childhood innocence when the world was magic and new first time experiences were viewed in complete and utter awe, for once gone can never ever be recovered. That said, when we come across little gems like this poem, we can at least be reminded of what it once was Enjoylike. what is left of our summer and please, please do not hurry your children or grandchildren or even great grandchildren to grow up too soon. Let them hold on to their precious innocence enabling them to be children and not mini-adults, but always make sure that they are safe. Keep healthy and stay SAFE!
