n Brigadier NS “Tank” NASH CBE (1956) gained the Master’s in Military History at the University of Birmingham in December. He is now contracted to write his sixth book of military history, on the logistics of the Vietnam wars, 1945-74.

n Dr John BARNES (1956), author of Nice Numbers, donated a copy of his book to our Library. In this book, John examines a variety of amusing and fascinating topics regarding numbers, and their uses both ancient and modern. n Alfie CAINE (2015) was awarded the Schuldham Plate

by Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and the Purcell Prize from the Department of Architecture. Alfie’s work was exhibited at the Royal Institute of British Architects ‘Fresh Perspectives’ exhibition.

Laurence is Managing Director at Morgan Stanley and has been a long-standing supporter of the School. SPORT n Dominic WALDOUCK (2006) captained Oxford University to victory in the 2018 Rugby Varsity at Twickenham in December. Dominic was after-dinner speaker at the Oxford Latymerians’ Dinner 2019.

n Richard Phelps (1983) umpired the women’s race at the 2019 Boat Race, cheered on by members of Latymer’s rowing community at our Boat House.

n Toby REGBO (2010) has been cast in the Game of Thrones prequel, HBO’s spinoff series which is set thousands of years before the events of the popular drama.

n Funk collective Jungle, formed by Tom McFARLAND (2007) and Josh LLOYD-WATSON (2008), performed their single Heavy, California from their second album ‘For Ever’ on Later… with Jools Holland. The band completed a South American tour in May and will begin a series of summer European dates.

n Actor Calam LYNCH (2013) is in rehearsals for Wife at the Kiln.

He appeared in Mrs Wilson for the BBC, opposite Ruth Wilson, and Derry Girls. Prior to that, Calam played Claudio in Much Ado About Nothing at the Rose Theatre.

n Georgia HELLARD TIMM (2015) began her third (Junior) year as co-captain of the 2019 Lightweight Women’s Rowing Roster at Princeton University, where she is studying Liberal Arts. Georgia took part in the Head of the Charles in October, finishing with the Silver medal.

i25 AWARDS TEAM FILM LATYMER HEAD The Head, David Goodhew, was a finalist in the i25 awards which celebrate the UK’s top 25 innovators and influencers in the independent education sector.

The nomination is for Latymer’s Inspiring Minds campaign, the ambition of which is to raise £40 million to fund means-tested bursaries for as many as 1 in 4 pupils. As part of the award ceremony, the School welcomed a film crew from the i25 Awards team to interview David, which can be viewed at the Latymer Upper School YouTube Channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9QwthszmsY&t

LATYMER WINS ISP SOCIAL MOBILITY AWARD In December, Latymer won the Independent School Parent magazine’s Independent Schools of the Year 2018 award for Outstanding Contribution to Social Mobility. The Head said: “I’m so proud that Latymer has been recognised by the ISP awards as a school that takes the issue of social mobility seriously. Our alumni, pupils, staff, governors and parents have pulled together through our Inspiring Minds campaign to help make our school a more diverse, grounded and exciting environment in which to learn.”

LATYMERIANS SPREAD THEIR WINGS ABROAD Latymerians are encouraged to adopt an international outlook on life so it is no surprise that many pupils choose to study abroad. This academic year, 19 sixth formers have had 47 offers between them, from 30 leading institutions in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia.

BREXIT TALK WITH LORD HESELTINE The “greatest constitutional crisis of modern times”; Lord Heseltine’s opening gambit on Brexit set the tone to his speech in Latymer’s Main Hall to staff and students. The seasoned politician and confirmed Europhile gave an insight into more than half a century of experience at the front line of UK politics.

LANDSCAPING THE PIAZZA It would be hard to argue that Latymer’s urban site has ever been a horticultural heartland. However, the Piazza and surrounding communal areas will be undergoing a transformation in the coming months. The tarmac will be removed, making way for vibrant greenery and seating spaces designed for learning, socialising and wellbeing.

The upgrade to the site will benefit students and staff immensely, and of course will reduce our impact on the environment. Turn to page 9 to find out about sponsorship opportunities for this landscaping project.

SCHOOL NEWS

CARE 4 CALAIS In December and February, a total of 100 Latymer students and staff volunteered in France with Care4Calais, a humanitarian aid charity distributing much needed relief to refugees sleeping rough in and around Calais. They provided hundreds of bags of warm winter clothing, shoes, tents and tarps, donated by our Latymer community of alumni, parents, staff and pupils. Across the two trips, over ÂŁ15,000 of funds were raised in aid of the charity.

ROUND SQUARE INTERNATIONAL SERVICE As a Global Member of Round Square, Latymer sent a small group of students and staff to Sri Lanka to embark on a two week international service trip. The project team were stationed in Wasgawuma and worked on sustainability initiatives to help local communities. This involved the construction of a classroom for a local school and planting citrus trees to divert elephants in their migration through the village.

LATYMERIANS IN THE US

Last October the Head, David Goodhew, was joined by Ruby Danowski, Deputy Director of Development, for a series of alumni reunions in California. US Friends of Latymer Council members David GODFREY (1963), Ron PHILLIPS (1957) and Mark BULLIMORE (1980) were instrumental in planning the trip, as was David KENDALL (1967).

The first stop was Stanford University where Alexis ROCHAT (2015) took the Head on a campus tour and met with Nick MAYHEW (2017) and Alice BALLARD-ROSSITER (2017). Rose CHEGWIN (2006) showed off the Bay Bridge, though her husband Harry McVEIGH (2006) was away shooting a music video with his band White Lies, and David Kendall gave a tour of Muir Woods National Monument.

Latymerians from 1950-2015 met at Le Meridien San Francisco for a reunion hosted by David Kendall and Tony HYNES (1989). Further south in Fullerton, Mark Bullimore hosted a reunion which was well attended

by Latymerians from Southern California. There, the Head shared a new video about the four US Friends of Latymer bursary recipients, which can be viewed at www.latymerians.us.

The final stop of the tour was in Los Angeles where Nick CANNON (1991) gave the Head a tour of the Walt Disney lot in Burbank and a group of Latymerians from the early 2000s caught up over brunch in West Hollywood.

The Bursaries Appeal, as featured on the cover of this issue, is a key part of our Inspiring Minds campaign. It allows us to increase the number of fee-assisted places, whilst the wider campaign works to build the School’s endowment, safeguarding the future of our bursary programme.

We are pleased the new intake of students in September 2019 will be the most inclusive year group yet. However, in order to support more students in the following years, we need your help.

At this point in the academic year, we are likely to be able to fund four new bursaries, but our goal is to fund five. We will be extremely grateful to receive gifts of any size to the Bursaries Appeal; to donate, please turn to the back cover of this edition.

A NEW HOME FOR THE ENGRAVED BRICKS You may remember that a few years back, a number of engraved bricks were available for sponsorship by members of the Latymer community. As part of the landscaping project, these bricks have been removed from around the edge of the Main Hall, put away safely in storage, and will be laid along the edge of the Library over the summer.

The Latymer Connection Taymoor ATIGHETCHI (2007), founder of personalised stationer, Papier, and Adam BALON (1990), co-founder of Innocent Drinks, spoke to Latymer about their success as entrepreneurs. Adam also set up JamJar Investments, a venture capital firm supporting consumer brands, which counts Taymoor’s Papier amongst its varied portfolio.

How does it feel to be back at Latymer?

Adam: Walking through these corridors brings back happy memories. It’s funny because some things are completely new, other bits haven’t changed at all. I find that…reassuring.

Taymoor: Coming back here feels like a second home.

What I’ve seen so far hasn’t changed; the Main Hall is the same which is nice, but I’m excited to see the new parts of the School.

Who was your favourite teacher and why?

A: Mr Mower, my Mathematics teacher, who sadly passed away. His total passion for maths got me excited about it. I remember those lessons very fondly.

T: Mr Orme. He was the main reason I went on to read History of Art at Cambridge, and why I still love art. He had a charisma that made everyone want to learn more about the subject.

Where did your drive to be an entrepreneur come from?

A: I got to a stage where I needed to start making more money. I tried my hand at gardening but thought, “Wow, this is quite hard work!” Then I realised I could teach my sister’s friends GCSE Physics and get paid reasonably well for less work.

T: My dad is an antiques dealer and he inspired me to learn the trade, so I set up a stall on the Portobello Road selling art and antiques. I also did the Young Enterprise scheme at Latymer, which I really enjoyed. It drew me to the concept of doing your own thing.

How so?

T: Latymer is quite entrepreneurial in its ethos. It nurtures your talents, whether that’s sport, theatre or drama. It’s about reaching your full potential, which is what entrepreneurship is. I did a lot of public speaking and debating, all of which comes in handy when you’re selling.

How did your business relationship come about?

T: I remember going to one of Adam’s careers talks when I was a student at Latymer. Years later we were reintroduced and I mentioned his talk. That’s the point at which we realised there was an opportunity to collaborate through Papier and JamJar. A: It’s always a great introduction when someone says they went to Latymer!

What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?

A: Get very clear on what you’re trying to do. What is the product? Why is it different to anything else? Where is the market? Then surround yourself with a great team.

It’s rare to find someone who can do everything. Know your weaknesses and find people who can help you on those things.

T: Just get out there and do it. Everyone has ideas, but what ultimately differentiates an entrepreneur is they take a risk. If you overthink it, you’ll kill the idea. The first leap is always the hardest one.

What’s in store in 2019?

T: Internationalisation is probably my biggest focus area. Last year, we launched Papier in the US and it’s grown incredibly well and quickly.

A: With JamJar, we want to get better at finding brilliant young teams that will grow the famous consumer brands of the future. Whilst the UK political situation might be rather depressing, great businesses start under all sorts of circumstances, so we don’t worry too much about the short term and keep looking for those teams that are looking to solve consumers’ problems over the next 10-15 years.

Fran BOORMAN (née SALUSSOLIA, 2000) is an award-winning entrepreneur having built a £9m turnover business. She is a TEDx Speaker and has authored an international bestselling book, as well as regularly discussing business issues on BBC Radio.

My entrepreneurial journey started after a career in the property industry. I began importing crafting products to sell online which afforded me a more flexible work schedule as I started a family. I learnt a great deal, sold the company and became involved in Networking Marketing – I built that business to become one of the fastest growing in the industry.

A retired professional league footballer and I have now created an award-winning, trail blazing, mentoring programme Goal17. Corporate mentors are paired with homeless and vulnerable young people in football-themed academies. The new IMPACT programme has been named the UK’s top, sports-led mentoring programme.

I have a clear method for creating growth – that is to use business to create a positive social impact.

Having written a bestselling book, and given keynote speeches, I have helped over 1,000 people set up their own businesses whilst also consulting with larger organisations on a strategic level.

Every day there are challenges. I listen to my gut and ignore those who tell me what I plan is impossible.

Challenges are opportunities to grow.

I am very organised and structured. I always review and adjust which creates continual progress. I like to make sure, in whatever I do, we all have fun at home and work. It is easier to get things done when everyone is smiling!

My time at Latymer had a huge influence on me. I had the opportunity to develop independence of thought and work out my identity. The eclectic mix of people were all on their own journeys with no perceived limitations. Latymerians succeed because of this attitude.

2019 is going to be an exciting year. There are plans to grow and scale Goal17 nationwide. We will deliver our programmes to our corporate clients, building a world-class team to impact hundreds of young lives.

LATYMERIANS’ GOLF DAY 2018 Hoebridge GC at the end of May was in the best condition that Latymer golfers had ever seen it. LATYMERIAN ROWERS’ REUNION Latymerian rowers returned to the Boat Club for an afternoon of fun and informal races, followed by a reception. Guests caught up with their old crew and got out on the water again, even if it had been a while!

Class of 2008 Reunion Sally Markowska hosted a 10 year reunion for members of the Class of 2008. Held at The Hampshire Hog pub close to Latymer, drinks were served as Latymerians renewed connections and reminisced on times past.

LATYMERIANS’ DINNER 2018 Latymerians and staff gathered for this annual tradition which began with tours of the School and the Archives, followed by a three-course dinner and a speech from Alan SENDOREK (2000), Head of Strategy, QPR Property.

TORONTO YULETIDE BANQUET Festivities were in full swing as Latymerians and partners (plus penguins!) gathered for the 10th Annual Latymer Christmas Celebration in Toronto.

2Bridges Run Graham PROUD (1997) won the 2Bridges Run and was presented with the award for fastest alumnus by Barry DORN (1950), former organiser of the Round the River Jog. WELCOME BACK

Bridging the Divide: From Student to Staff This year, Latymer had the pleasure of welcoming back two familiar faces. We caught up with Huw JONES (1978) and Tom HATTON (2006) who returned to the School in September, this time on the “other side of the fence”.

“Latymer gave me a desire to keep learning.”

What is it like to come back as a member of staff?

It’s very odd, I would never have thought I’d be back as a teacher! I graduated from an MA in Fine Art Photography at the Royal College of Art, 2016, and was selected for the Bloomberg New Contemporaries, 2017. Janet Hillis Maidment is currently on maternity leave and I’m covering in her absence. I’m thoroughly enjoying teaching and it’s a joy to be passing on my experience to the students.

At times it feels like a completely different place, half of the school has been re-built and it’s now fully co-ed. A few weeks ago I suddenly heard what I assumed to be a fight in the main courtyard which turned out to be a flash mob dance-off. That would never have happened when it was a boys’ school!

Generally though, the Latymer ethos seems to have continued. Students are nice, bright and similarly a bit cheeky, although they know where the line is.

HUW JONES (1978): JOINED LATYMER IN 1971 AND, AGAIN, IN 2018 AS A ROWING COACH “I feel proud to have been, and once again be, part of this School.”

What is it like to come back as a member of staff?

From my perspective, there still continues to be a very engaging, creative and welcoming atmosphere – perhaps more so with the School now being coeducational, and all the pastoral work being done. You can easily discern that Latymer is still a great school and my experience of the students, staff and the way it is run, is definitely very positive. I can honestly say I really enjoy coming in to work!

Tell us about Latymer in the 1970s – any anecdotes or memories?

Where do I start? I was reprimanded by then Headmaster, Maurice Isaac, for playing catch with a Prep boy’s cap and I witnessed one of Hugh Grant’s finer acting moments in a Maths class detention. There were some fantastic rowing achievements: winning at the National Championships, National Schools’ and Home International Regatta. Oh, and of course, an excellent Latymer education! Those were great days for me.

How did Latymer shape you as a person?

My three brothers and I all went to Latymer. I think it gave us a really solid education and provided us all with a truly grounded ‘life’ experience. I can particularly single out Jim Clark, our Rowing Coach who distinctly influenced me, not just from being an excellent coach, but also a person who extolled life values and attitudes.

Plus, it’s fantastic to see Mr Orme, a teacher back in my time, still involved with the School.

Sum up Latymer in a few words?

Great memories, lifelong friends, significant achievements for me and so many of my colleagues.

Tell us about Latymer when you attended – any anecdotes or memories?

Highlights for me were definitely the Art and History of Art trips. Venice was particularly memorable. We arrived at night, and a group of us got lost in the maze of streets and canals trying to find our way back to the hostel.

As an early starter in the facial hair department, I also remember Sally Markowska giving me a week of lunchtime detentions for having a beard in the sixth form!

How did Latymer shape you as a person?

Latymer has given me an independence of thought and a desire to keep learning. Our year group was strong across many disciplines and as teenagers we were fairly tough with each other, so it was also character building.

Sum up Latymer in a few words?

Latymer is an amazing environment to learn in, it provides an incredible education with fantastic facilities.

Tom as a student in 2000 and now as a Teacher

n Terence Alan Frank ATKINS (1953) n Derek George ATKINSON FCCA (1945) Derek remained heavily involved with Latymer long after leaving for a career in accountancy and management, qualifying as a Company Secretary.

He was a regular at the Latymerians’ Dinner, his family estimate he attended over 50 of them. He joined the Alumni Tennis Club in 1947 and became Club Treasurer, Derek George Atkinson progressing on to join the Old Latymerian Association’s committee, where he served as Secretary for 11 years. He was a supporter of the School’s Bursaries Appeal.

At school during WW2, he joined the Cadet Corps rising to Under Officer. On leaving Latymer he enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment’s Cadet Battalion, receiving a commission and commanding several units, then rose to Staff Officer. He received the Cadet Force Medal in 1957.

He maintained his military connections after resigning, when his family arrived, by auditing their accounts and founding the Officers’ Club.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, and by his son, Graham, and daughters, Jenny and Sue, and their families. n Edwin Taflin BEZANT (1940) n Geoffrey Bruce BROUGHTON BSc MPhil (1962) Geoffrey was a well-respected gentleman, a church worshipper and a family man who will be missed by his wife, Brenda, children, grandchildren, sisters, nephews and their families.

Geoffrey obtained his BSc in Mechanical Engineering at the Geoffrey Bruce University of Birmingham, where in Broughton 1964 he met Brenda. They married and moved to London where Geoffrey conducted research in the Department of Anaesthetics at the Royal College of Surgeons, obtaining his MPhil through the University of London.

In 1969, they moved to Toronto, Canada with their first child, and then as the family grew, they moved to British Columbia (BC), living first in Richmond and later in Tsawwassen. Geoffrey’s career had begun with Orenda Engines Ontario, and then continued in BC in the maintenance departments at Pacific Western Airlines, CP Air, Canadian Airlines, and finally Air Canada. He moved into management positions and eventually was the Director of Maintenance and Engineering until he retired, in 2001.

Retirement was spent in Lake Country in the Okanagan.

Geoffrey enjoyed hiking and being out in nature. He had a lifelong love of trains and was still in the midst of designing and building his own model railway at home.

He volunteered at the Lake Country Museum, and has also left his family the extensive legacy of his many hours of work on their family genealogy.

n Richard Anthony CURTIS LLM (1980) Richard studied law at University College, Cardiff (University of Wales) and later gained his Master’s at SOAS, London. He entered the Inns of Court law school and was called to the Bar in 1984. He rose to be a Principal Crown Prosecutor for the CPS, responsible for undertaking the prosecution of serious and Richard Curtis complex fraud committed within London working closely with the Metropolitan Police, the City of London Police and Department of Trade and Industry.

He then joined Standard Chartered Bank as Regional Head of Legal and Compliance for Africa, Middle East and South Asia. A particularly difficult period was Sierra Leone during the civil war. He won the Banker Magazine Award for Anti-Money Laundering because of his work in Africa. In 2006, Richard joined Essex County Council as Head of Legal for Commercial and Property and then left to be a managing partner with Curtis and Curtis and acting as a legal administrator for his mother-in-law’s nursing home.

OBITUARIES

We mark the passing of the following Latymerians who have sadly passed away recently.

He married Caroline in 1992 and had three children.

They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 2017.

He was a kind, loyal and generous person to his friends and family and always had a great sense of humour. He suffered ill health for a long time, but always prioritised others ahead of himself. n Gerald Arthur CHAMPNISS OBE FRMetS (1936) Gerry’s career in aviation began as a pilot during WW2. He joined the RAF and completed his training in St. Catharine’s, Canada.

Stationed in Montreal, he was a member of Ferry Command; the legendary flying unit that delivered warplanes to the areas where they were needed. He later worked for the British Government in the Middle East in the early 1950s, most notably in Bahrain as an Aerodrome Commander, for which he was recognised with an MBE. In the 1960s, he joined Gerald Arthur the British Airports Authority Champniss (BAA), eventually becoming Deputy Director of Safety and Operations for all British airports. In the New Year’s honours of 1978, he was made an OBE. In 1984, at his retirement party his BAA colleagues called him, “the most well-known man in British aviation”.

Gerry was proud of his Latymer years. He enrolled three of his sons at the School: Waynne (1964), Alex (1970), and Kim (1973). Gerry passed away in Worthing, Sussex aged 98 on 22 December 2018. n Eric COPSON MA (1941) Eric left Latymer early after gaining a scholarship to study languages at King’s College, Cambridge. He completed a year of study before joining the Officer Cadet Training Unit and, by December 1942, was trained as an Infantry Officer and soon joined the RAF. Eric went on to play a very important role as a codebreaker. After training at Bletchley Park, he was stationed in the Far East and, on the morning of 14 August 1945, was brought the latest Japanese intercept.

He stripped it down to the original Japanese and, upon

translating it, discovered an order for all Japanese military forces to cease fire. Thus Eric, a Latymerian, was probably the first person on the Allied side to know that the Second World War was over.

After the war, Eric worked as a Russian interpreter and consultant to the United Nations. In latter years, he was a dedicated supporter of Latymer’s Bursaries Appeal and kept in regular touch with the Foundation Office. Eric died peacefully in February at the age of 94, dignified to the end. n Richard EMMS (1955) n John David Hillyer FIELD BSc MEng (1961) John studied Civil Engineering at Brunel and took his Master’s at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada.

He worked for the Road Research Laboratory and then several companies on road construction projects, mainly in Italy. He was an accomplished musician, playing John David Hillyer Field banjo in the Michael Price Trio. He also made violins and banjos. He will be sorely missed by his family. n Denis Frederick Stanley GRANEY FCA ACIS (1942) n Laurence Bernard HALLS ACIS (1939) Laurence was at Latymer during WW2, enduring air raids and the uncertain times. After leaving, he spent his two years of National Service in the Fleet Air Arm as Radio Mechanic. Then for nearly 40 years, he worked in finance departments within Royal Dutch Shell, mainly in the UK. Laurence was a regular supporter of our Bursaries Appeal. A family man who will be sorely missed. n Roland Xavier HINDMARSH OBE MA (1941) Roland was born in Alnwick, Northumberland and joined Latymer when his family came to London, via France and Belgium. He left school to join the Royal Navy serving initially on the cruiser HMS Manchester. When it sank, Roland survived and became a submariner serving on X-craft off Norway and then Thailand.

After the war, Roland read English at St Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge. It was during the summer vacation, while working as a tour guide for a group of Swedish teachers, when he met his wife to be.

They had four children. He worked in Sweden until 1953, returning to London to train as a teacher. Roland taught at St. Mary’s, Kisubi, Uganda and then became a school inspector. In 1963, his family settled in Cambridge, where he worked as an author and a teacher, before joining the British Council in 1967. He held postings in Kolkata, Tehran, London and Brussels, retiring in 1983, and being awarded an OBE in 1982. In his retirement, he engaged in several activities, notably counselling. Roland died of natural causes at home in September 2018.

n Philip Francis David HODGE FCA (1964) David’s career in accounting began soon after leaving Latymer when he passed his final examinations for the ACA. He would go on to become the Financial Controller of the Yellow Pages prior to retirement, after which he lived in Portugal and was a keen golfer. He was a supporter of the Annual Latymerians’ Golf Day. His father Cyril (1928) attended Latymer.

n Jeremy LANCASTER BSc (1976) Jerry served in the 17/21st Lancers as a second lieutenant. He later became a nurse in the Central Middlesex Hospital’s A&E, then Senior Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire. He was a gifted, charismatic teacher, possessing a huge knowledge to impart to his many student nurses, midwives and paramedics.

Jerry was an intelligent man and could have chosen any career, but he chose always to help others.

Jeremy Lancaster

Jerry died in 2018 after a long battle with lung cancer. He was a great supporter of Latymer and a legacy is held in trust that will be passed to the School upon the death of his wife, Gillian. n Terence LIPWICK BA (1980) Terry’s long standing friend, Alex KEE (1980) writes: “Terry was a life-long friend to many of his contemporary Latymerians. He went on to Warwick University, after which he worked intermittently as a Film and TV Librarian in West London. Terry struggled with mental illness for all of his adult life, but he was never happier than when he was at school. He played rugby and cricket from Prep to Sixth Form (and later, cricket for the Old Latymerians), he was in all the plays, he loved studying Hamlet and T.S. Eliot, and he relished the freedom the School allowed to engage socially with teachers. He had a great empathy for people, and he never stopped bringing people from Latymer together, for which the many Latymer and Goldolphin friends who attended his funeral can only be eternally grateful.” n Lewis Thomas John MORGAN BSc (1945) Lewis joined Latymer on a London County Council Scholarship. After school, he graduated from the University of Manchester in 1961 with a BSc Honours Degree in Mathematics. Lewis developed a varied career as a Computer Consultant and Analyst taking up posts at Elliot’s Electronics, Aldermaston Atomic Research, Harwell Atomic Research and at C.A.P. (London). He is warmly missed and fondly remembered by his brother, David, and two children, Roger and Hilary. n Frank William RUMBLE (1938) Between leaving Latymer and the start of WW2, Frank worked in a bank.

After the war, he and his close friend Fred LEES (1938) rode to Switzerland on their motorbikes. On their return, Frank joined the family business, which was a Men’s and Boys’ outfitters. Once the shops were sold, Frank worked as a science technician at a girls’ school in Harrow.

He passed away in December after suffering a series of strokes and from dementia.

Frank William Rumble

n Group Captain Frederick Alwyn SPENCER OBE FIM MCIPS (1944) After leaving Latymer, Fred joined the RAF in 1946 and spent time in Germany and the Arabian Gulf. He was seconded to the Royal Australian Air Force from 197477 and commanded a supply depot in Sydney. He was

Fred died peacefully in January 2019, aged 91, after a long and happy retirement.

He is survived by his loving wife Jo, three sons, Jan, Dean and Guy, daughter Caroline, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

After lecturing in Rhodesia and Edinburgh, he moved to the University of East Anglia in 1978. He joined as a lecturer in the School of International Development and retired as Professor and Dean of the School of Natural Resource Development in 2008.

Frederick Alwyn Spencer

n John SLATTER MA PhD (1962) Born in Richmond, John was adopted by Henrietta and Albert Slatter. After Latymer he read Russian and French at Jesus College, Cambridge. He went on to marry Irene, also a student of Russian, at the University of London. An academic career for John followed in Russian Studies. As well as research into peasantry, he produced interesting work on the role of Russian émigrés in the UK. His first post was at the University of Birmingham, gaining his PhD before taking up lecturing in Russian History at the University of Durham, where his wife taught Russian. They spent the remainder of their careers at Durham, retiring in 2003. They had two sons, and a grandson. They enjoyed music and travel and kept an interest in Russian culture and current affairs. n Councillor Clive Christian SMITH MRAC AISP DMS AIM (1956) After leaving Latymer, Clive went to Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, followed by National Service in the RAF where his love of flying and travelling was born. His first job was in Malaysia as a rubber planter. He eventually managed a rubber plantation in Johor Bahru.

Clive returned to England in 1968, intending to get cheap transport to Australia, however Diana, his wife, didn’t fancy Australia.

They married and moved to Dunmow, Essex in 1970, raising a young family, as he continued his agricultural work as a Fertiliser Salesman, first for Fisons and then for ICI. Clive was also an Antiquarian Book Dealer.

When he retired in 1991, he became Dunnow Town Councillor and Mayor. Annually, Clive would spend up to three months travelling. He loved New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands, which he explored, visiting farflung places like Kiribas, Tuvalu and Banaba. He made many friends and contacts on these trips. He also met up in 2002 with the School’s Rugby team as they stopped off to play in Fiji on their return from their New Zealand Tour. Clive kindly hosted a tea for them in their hotel. n Michael John STATHAM (1953) John was an enthusiastic pupil in his time at Latymer, also excelling in sport where he was selected for trials for the England Youth Football team. He remained very close to the School after he left through the Old Latymerians Association, as a keen and accomplished player in the football and cricket teams.

He went on to a very successful career in investment management, working for a South African mining company, Charter Consolidated (now Anglo American).

He married Valerie in September 1961 and spent many happy years living in Woking, Surrey before moving to Barton-On-Sea in 2006. John died peacefully, aged 83, in September at Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Sadly Valerie died in 2009 but he is survived by devoted son and daughter, Neil and Elizabeth and adoring granddaughter, Olivia. A generous and devoted family man, he is much missed by all who remember him.

Over almost 50 years, Michael developed an international profile and reputation as a researcher and adviser in tropical agricultural development, land resources, conservation of biodiversity and soil conservation. He remained extremely active in retirement in various high-level advisory positions. In latter years, he was a regular supporter of Latymer’s Bursaries Appeal. He will always be warmly missed by loved ones. n Professor John Berkeley James WELLS BSc PhD (1955) John left Latymer having been captain of swimming and water polo and played in the Rugby 1st XV, to study Zoology, gaining a first-class honours University of London degree in 1958. This launched his academic career and he went on to gain his Doctorate at Exeter University. After working in a number of marine biological institutions, he emigrated to New Zealand in 1976. In 1991, he became the first full-time Dean of Victoria Wellington University and was instrumental in setting up the School of Biological Sciences.

n Professor Michael Anthony STOCKING BA MPhil PhD (1963) After leaving Latymer, Michael completed his Bachelor’s in Geography at Magdalen College, Oxford in 1969, winning the Herbertson Memorial Prize for best dissertation. He gained his Master’s at the Faculty of Science, University of London, where he also completed his Doctorate in 1977.

He returned to London as a Group Captain and was Deputy Director of Logistic Management at the MOD (RAF). After retiring in 1982, he was General Services Manager at Microwave Systems Ltd.

He became a world-leading authority on harpacticoid copepod crustaceans with many books and publications to his credit. He retired in 1998 and devoted his time to his local environment promoting community awareness and gaining civic awards in recognition. He had remained in contact with some school friends, notably Jefferson MACKEY (1954), who was his ‘Best Man’. John met his wife, Margery, at Ealing Swimming Club and they went on to have two sons and grandchildren. n Michael David WHITE (1959) Michael passed away last December at his home in Rochester, New York. He was proud to have been a Latymerian and often spoke of his time as a student.

He enjoyed reading the Latymerian newsletters.

Predeceased by his daughter, Sharon, and survived by his loving wife of 23 years, brother, sister, son, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren, nieces and nephews along with many close friends. n David Tudor WILLIAMS (1951) David died peacefully in January after several months battling against cancer. After school, David qualified as a Chartered Accountant. In the early 1960s, he became Partner of Futcher Head Smith, a medium-sized City firm. In 1977, he became Managing Director of the Lloyd’s underwriting side of the Alexander Howden Group.

David Tudor Williams David later headed up A J Archer Underwriting Agencies where he was joined on the board by Bryan KELLETT (1956). In retirement, David continued his love of sailing, at one stage taking his yacht to the Mediterranean. He leaves a widow, two daughters, six grandchildren, and his brother, John Wynne WILLIAMS (1963).
