A round up of the School’s news since our last edition.

UK SOCIAL MOBILITY AWARDS The School was honoured to have been shortlisted for the UK Social Mobility Awards, which took place at the London Marriott Hotel on 18 October. Latymer was the only school to have been shortlisted in two categories: the ‘Community Programme of the Year Award’, for the School’s partnership work with local state schools and our Head, David Goodhew, was a finalist for the ‘Champion of the Year Award’ for launching our ambitious Inspiring Minds bursary campaign.

David Goodhew said: “In the same year that Latymer Upper won three TES [formerly Times Educational Supplement] awards, including Independent School of the Year, I’m so proud that our Inspiring Minds bursary campaign and our partnerships with local schools and organisations, have been recognised for these prestigious Awards. Of course the progress we have made would not have been possible without the support of our pupil, parent, alumni and staff community, for which I’m extremely grateful.”

UK Social Mobility Awards

Latymer has also been shortlisted for the inaugural Independent School Parent Awards for its contribution to social mobility. Edward Latymer would no doubt approve that his ethos of inclusivity continues to be at the heart of the School he founded nearly 400 years ago.

80TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR BOAT CLUB This year marked the 80th anniversary of the revival of our Boat Club under the School’s third Headmaster, Frederick Wilkinson. This milestone comes during what has been a strong season all round for the senior rowing squad. In senior events at the Henley Royal Regatta, the school enjoyed strong Latymerian representation from Henry FIELDMAN (2007), Barnaby STROUD-TURP (2012), Ben FREEMAN (2015), Tom PHELPS (2016), Orlando NIXON (2015), Rose MARGOLIS (2015), Zack YOUELL (2014) and Nicholas MAYHEW (2017).

CHARITY ACTION IN UGANDA Rachel Monahan, Head of Year 10 and Teacher of Geography, led a group of 56 students and staff travelling to Uganda during half-term.

In collaboration with M-Lisada charity, Hidden Treasure Primary School and Soft Power Education, a British charity and Ugandan NGO, the group worked with communities in Uganda to improve quality of life through education. The pupils participated in a range of volunteering activities including painting classrooms and teaching in primary schools and a special needs school. They also refurbished an entire classroom block at St Gonzaga Primary School and the whole school at Hidden Treasure, before spending two days of relaxation on safari at the Murchison Falls National Park in northwest Uganda.

In the run up to the trip, a total of £21,000 was raised in charitable funds to help local communities. Latymer continues to sponsor eight children from M-Lisada to go to school every year, reflecting the establishment of the Latymer Foundation in 1624 to educate “eight poore boyes” in Hammersmith.

BANDSTAND CUP Year 7 and 8 pupils take to the streets as they compete in the annual Bandstand Cup. The runners completed the distance of 4.5km, starting from the Corinthian Sailing Club to the Bandstand in Duke’s Meadows and back again.

Comprising nearly 6,000 square feet of exhibition space, it is one of the biggest contemporary art galleries in London.

n Ben FREEMAN (2015) was rowing for University of London in the Prince Albert Cup at Henley this summer and then represented GB U23s in the World Championships in Poznan, Poland winning a silver medal in the eight. n Lucan GILLESPIE (2017) has become a sought after model by top brands Anna Sui, Simone Rocha, Burberry, and Gucci, and first appeared at Vogue. She is photographed modelling at New York’s Fashion Week for Rodarte. Lucan is also a budding photographer.

n Professor David CRESSY (1963) has published Gypsies, An English History, the first comprehensive history of gypsies in England. David is Professor of British History and Humanities and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at The Ohio State University. n Alex DAVIS (2005) is now leading on the Government Rough Sleeping Strategy and Policy. She was previously helping rehouse Grenfell Tower residents. n Sam DEARDS (1996) was Director of the 2018 Hammersmith Arts Festival. n Jonathan DRORI (1979) has written Around the World in 80 Trees, published in the UK, USA and Germany, with other countries to follow. The biographies of eighty tree species show how plant science, human history and folklore are intertwined. Jon recently gave a talk about the book as part of our Inspiring Conversations series (see page 15).

n Charlie FOX (2017) has signed his first professional contract with Queens Park Rangers FC as a defender.

n Hugh GRANT (1978) received much acclaim for his portrayal of the Liberal politician Jeremy Thorpe in the three-part TV dramatisation of A Very English Scandal on the BBC. He was BAFTA nominated for his role in Paddington 2.

n John GUTHRIE, Michael LEEFIELD and Jim TILLEY (all 1956) were reunited at The Golden Lion in Winchester after years of not seeing each other. Jim was visiting the UK from Sydney, Australia, where he now resides. The trio were classmates in Economics during their final year at Latymer.

n Allegra STRATTON (1998), co-presenter of political show Peston on Sunday, made the decision to leave the political show after two years in order to spend more time with her two young children. Allegra is remaining as national editor of ITV News.

n Rufus JONES (1993) recently starred in the feature film Stan & Ollie alongside Steve Coogan and John C Reilly, released in UK cinemas in January 2019. Other film credits include The Foreigner, directed by Martin Campbell and featuring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, as well as the much loved film Paddington Bear. TV credits include W1A, Camping, Stag and The Casual Vacancy. In the West End, Rufus has featured in Dead Funny alongside Katherine Parkinson and Steve Pemberton. Rufus is due to star in Home, a new six part, self-penned sitcom for Channel 4. Sister Lotte JONES (1998) has joined PR and communications firm freuds as Partner following her role as Creative Director at Teneo Blue Rubicon.

n British fashion label Teatum Jones, co-founded by Catherine TEATUM (2001), was shortlisted for a Green Carpet Challenge Award for sustainability and socially conscious design. The label won the womenswear final of the 2015/16 International Woolmark Prize. Catherine is pictured at the Serpentine Summer Party with Abi HAYHOE (2008), now Mrs Ronan, both wearing Teatum Jones dresses. n Ben THOMSON (2004) has carved a reputation as one of the most sought after DJs in recent times. Known as Ben UFO, he is also co-founder of Hessle Audio, considered one of the most important labels in UK dance music. n Louie THRELFALL (2014) appeared in Holby City and was in the recent six part BBC drama series, Age Before Beauty, where he played Tyler, alongside Robson Green.

n Rob LANE (1983) was nominated for a 2018 Ivor Novello Award for the track on Babs in the Best TV soundtrack category. n Alistair MOORE (1996) (known as PRINS-MOORE at School) has written his first novel, The Release, published by Candy Jar books. Alastair’s short film Kickoff (2012) won Best British Short at the 2013 UK Film Festival. n Alice PAVESI (2014), after working as an intern in Latymer’s Foundation Office last year, has this term embarked on a teaching career in the Biology Department at Colfe’s School, Horn Park. Jasmin WILLIAMS and Odette ROBERTSON (2018), both on their GAP years, have joined the Foundation Office and our Drama department respectively. Tom HATTON (2006) is teaching Art and Photography at the School this term.

We welcome contributions for future editions! n Newcastle Falcon’s rugby star, Dominic WALDOUCK (2006) is captaining Oxford University XV this season, whilst studying for his master’s degree. n Adrian WEALE (1982) appeared as the head judge in the critically acclaimed BBC2’s Secret Agent Selection.

His brother Jonathan (1997) is now a consultant anaesthetist in London and his nephew Rob (2012) is an officer in the Gurkhas. Rob’s dad, Simon, taught History at Latymer and is now Headmaster at Shebbear College, Devon. n Chloe YATES (2017) wrote and performed in Mental, a touching play set in an adolescents’ psychiatric ward.

Directed by Mattie WILLIAMS (2017) and shown at the OSO Arts Centre in Barnes, it featured a talented cast of Latymerians. On the experience, Chloe commented: “I wrote the play after experiencing my own mental health issues. I give a massive thanks to the Drama department at Latymer for supporting this project, and all the teachers at the School who carried me through some of the worst years of my life. This show has demonstrated to me that something beautiful can arise from something so difficult.”

n END OF AN ERA Following many years of loyal service, Barry DORN (1950) has stepped down as organiser of the Round the River Jog. This popular event, which began in 1981, was enjoyed not only by Latymerians and students, but also their families and sometimes dogs!

Barry became the secretary of the Old Boys Athletic Club in the 1950s, which competed with a number of other old boys’ clubs and annually in competitions.

In the 1970s, the club closed down but members eventually set up a nostalgic jog on the first Sunday in March. Tongue-in-cheek, it was originally called “The Geriatric Jog”.

Barry always ensured that everyone, regardless of age or ability, could participate in the 4.1 mile course. Starting off at Latymer’s Boat Club, runners or walkers continued across Barnes Bridge towards Hammersmith Bridge, before finishing at Furnival Gardens. Many would fundraise for charitable causes.

At the end, tradition held that participants celebrated (or commiserated) over a pint in the Auriol Boat Club.

The School extends huge thanks to Barry for all of his efforts and careful organisation of the Round the River Jog. The 2Bridges Run will continue in its place (see page 15) and Barry will be in attendance cheering on the runners!

n Latymerians visiting the School for a tour over the last few months have included: Tom HOLYER and Jim TILLEY (both 1956), David RIECKEN (1961), Chris PALMER (1979), Naval CHOPRA, Ken DALY and Paul WERB (all 1988), Matt SMITH (1992) and Max HACON (2013). In addition, a number joined an ‘Archives Tea’ to recall and caption names in our photo collection, for which we are most grateful.

Here are some items we spotted: n Nancy BOND (2015) walked the perimeter of Wales for charity, in aid of BEAT. Matt UDWIN (2010) undertook a sponsored cycle ride from London to Birmingham in aid of the RFU’s Injured Players’ Foundation. n In April, Jack SWINDON (2012) ran the London Marathon, raising over £5,000 for charity. n Nick PERRY (2012) completed his training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon. He then received a commission as a Lieutenant in the Australian Army’s Ordnance Corps, in Canberra from the Governor General, Sir Peter Cosgrove and is stationed in Adelaide. After Latymer, Nick attended Scotch College representing them and subsequently the Military College at Rugby; Nick is a graduate from Monash University.

INSPIRING MINDS

One Year On The Latymer Foundation at Hammersmith was established in 1624 ‘to clothe and educate eight poore boyes’ in Hammersmith. It remains true to the vision of its founder Edward Latymer to this day, offering a first class education to academically able students from all walks of life.

When Edward Latymer left funds in his will to educate these boys, he felt strongly about providing educational opportunities to children of all backgrounds. This ethos remains at the heart of Latymer and underpins our Inspiring Minds campaign.

“The public launch of Inspiring Minds in September 2017 unleashed an amazing groundswell of support from across the Latymer community,” reveals Amanda Scott, Director of Development at the Latymer Foundation at Hammersmith. “One year on and I am thrilled to report that thanks to the initial success of the campaign, some 175 of our students are now benefiting from bursaries.”

It was, however, back in 2014 when discussions about the possibility of a major fundraising campaign began in the Foundation Office. At the time, the number of bursaries available had been slowly growing year-on-year, but most of them were financed through annual fundraising and were not backed by permanent funding from the Foundation’s endowment. It became apparent that the support of the Latymer community would be required to significantly increase the School’s bursary provision to ensure that ability and potential were the sole criteria for admission, and that this core aspect was protected for future generations.

Spurred on by early conversations with key members of the community, Inspiring Minds was born. It was the most ambitious fundraising campaign for bursaries that Latymer, or indeed any independent school in the UK, had ever undertaken. The campaign aims to raise £40m by the 400th anniversary of the Latymer Foundation in 2024 to enable bright young people to experience a Latymer education irrespective of their families’ financial circumstances.

The Head, David Goodhew, has been impressed by the success of the campaign to date: “As one of the biggest bursary providers in the independent school sector, Latymer is able to educate the brightest children from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. This September, 18% of pupils who joined Latymer in Year 7 were in receipt of a means-tested bursary. Across the School, 175 children who would not otherwise have the means to study here, can now thrive – to the benefit of all our community.

That’s certainly a cause for celebration!”

ALUMNI RELATIONS UPDATE Nigel Orton has been your point of contact as Director of Alumni Relations since the School started to manage Latymerians’ events and activity in 1995.

The Latymerians’ Network has grown considerably during that time, taking the place of the Latymerians’ Association.

Membership currently exceeds 8,000 Latymerians, over 20 events are held annually and there is a well-read and appreciated bi-annual newsletter. Importantly, many Latymerians remain actively involved with the School by offering careers advice for our pupils and young alumni, and by supporting our bursary programme.

TOUR OF HENRY MOORE’S HOUSE AND STUDIOS A group of Latymerians and parents were treated to a tour of the former home of arguably the greatest sculptor of the 20th Century, guided by his grandson, Gus Danowski.

RECENT LEAVERS’ RECEPTION Over 100 Latymerians attended a Recent Leavers’ Reception as we welcomed back the Classes of 2013 and 2017. When a drizzle on the Prep garden became a downpour, the mood wasn’t dampened as everyone relocated to the Sports Hall to continue festivities.

INSPIRING CONVERSATIONS WITH DAVID GOODHEW Parents, Latymerians and School staff filled the Recital Hall to hear David’s lecture, “The poetry and philosophy of Lucretius: life, love, death and atomic physics”, a subject close to the speaker’s heart!

ARCHIVES

Reflections from the Archivist Malcolm Smith began his Latymer career as a Teacher of Classics in 1976, eventually becoming Head of Classics.

On retiring from teaching in 2011, he was appointed School Archivist and has been the ‘go-to’ person for Latymer’s history. Malcolm retires from that role in December (after what will have been 42 years of service to the Latymer community) and here he offers some reflections on his tenure.

How did you become the School Archivist?

When I retired from teaching, the School was keen to have a properly organised archive. Adwoa Winter, wife of then Head Peter Winter, was working in the Foundation Office and, with the backing of the Chair of Governors at the time, Richard Perham (1956), she arranged for two of the old Hall form rooms to be turned into what is now the Archive Room. David Baker of the Design Technology department led on the design, and did a fantastic job.

Adwoa and David lured me into the newly furnished space and wondered if I would be interested in looking after the collection. When I was offered a staff lunch on the days I would be working, I agreed without hesitation.

What have been the highlights, and most interesting aspects of the work of the Archivist?

It was an honour to interview Squadron Leader Bill Brown, then the oldest surviving member of the Latymer family. Bill was 104 when we met, but his mind was razor sharp. “Sorry I couldn’t pick you up from the station”, he declared, “but my fascist GP won’t let me drive any longer!”

He left me with this humbling memory: “I was born on November 11th 1911 and for my 7th birthday present, God gave me the end of the First World War.”

It has been very rewarding to help enquirers find out about their Latymerian family members and the School build its sense of history. That lends historical support to great schemes such as the Inspiring Minds campaign.

I also enjoyed informing new pupils about the faith-inspired generosity of Edward Latymer and showing the names of the “eight poore boyes” written on 17th century paper in 17th century ink on the first Governors’ Minutes of 1627.

What is the most bizarre item that you have come across?

A rather rusty sword, which is one of the last remaining props to survive from the ‘Gild’, the School’s unique cultural and dramatic society that started in 1922. There is also a set of photographs of Daisy the Crocodile, a very fine example of the art of a taxidermist. Daisy was for many years the symbol of the Pageant, the stage crew of the Gild, who would smuggle her onto the stage anarchically on the last night of the Jantaculum!

What do you think is the most interesting period in Latymer’s history and why?

Latymer has never stood still resting on its laurels or thinking it was entitled to success without working for it, so all its history is interesting. I think the most fascinating periods were the beginning years under the School’s first headmaster Rev C. J. Smith (a good name, that).

The School also went through phenomenal early success with the headmastership of the great Frederick Wilkinson despite the wartime pressures, and this continued with the start of the direct grant era, the Johanneum Exchange and the conscious combination of academic success and pastoral support.

What do you plan to do after retiring this time?

I am thinking of escaping to the country, or at least returning to my roots in the Midlands. I may buy a place in the fine city of Lichfield, which is not far so I would be able to visit London (and Latymer), to help if asked, but definitely not to cramp the style of my successor, whom I wish every success and blessing!

n John Harry AYRES (1948) John lived in Hounslow all his life until he retired to Norwich. At school, his passion was the model aircraft club. In his last few years, he had enjoyed sailing his Mirror Dinghy in the peace and quiet of the Norfolk Broads. n Martin BRANDON-BRAVO OBE (1950) Martin was born in Stoke Newington and then his family moved to Hammersmith. He was keenly involved in politics, served Nottingham City Council from 1968-71 and 1976-87, and was Council Leader. He contested Nottingham East for the Conservatives in 1979. In 1983, he was elected as the MP for Nottingham South, sitting in Parliament until 1992. He was during this spell the Parliamentary Private Secretary to both the Home Secretary and the Lord Privy Seal. From 1993-2009, he was County Councillor and Deputy Conservative Leader on Nottinghamshire Council and was made an Honorary Alderman by both the County Council and City Council.

Martin was married with two sons and his career also included running a successful clothing company. He supported Arsenal FC and in his retirement published an autobiography, Rowing Against the Tide. Martin had been introduced to rowing at Latymer and went on to become an international umpire. He had been heavily involved in getting the National Water Sports Centre created at Holme Pierrepont on the Trent. Martin had been President and was a Life Vice President of the Amateur Rowing Association, gaining an OBE for his contribution to the sport. n John BULLOCK FCA FCMA FIMC (1951) John was one of the boys confirmed in the School Chapel in December 1947. He won his 2nd XI Soccer Colours in 1949 during what had been a successful John’s portrait hanging in the School Hall

season for the team. John left Latymer at the end of the UVth Form to begin a successful career in finance and business at a time when post-war circumstances meant few boys stayed on in the Sixth Form. John’s career culminated as the Senior Partner and Deputy Chairman of Coopers and Lybrand.

He became a School Governor in 1988 and chaired the Finance Committee before being elected as Chair in 2000, a post which he held till 2005. During his time as a Governor at Latymer, John was largely responsible for putting the Foundation’s finances and investments in good order, and for laying the groundwork for Latymer’s bursary programme. John and his wife Ruth remained great supporters of the School and continued to attend Latymer events whenever possible. He was also a proud grandfather to current pupils, Poppy and Fred. John was a member of our 1624 Society. n William Arthur BURT (1945) William was one of three brothers, Leslie (1938) and Gerry (1942), who joined Latymer on London County Council (LCC) Scholarships. Known as Arthur, he joined in 1939 and spent his day in lessons and night times sleeping in air raid shelters. Their parents were profoundly deaf and the brothers greatly benefited from the assistance a Latymer education gave them, hence their recent support for our Bursaries fund and Arthur being a member of our 1624 Society.

OBITUARIES

We mark the passing of the following Latymerians who have sadly passed away recently.

After school he joined Shell International, soon to be interrupted by his National Service, but once resumed he spent his whole career with Shell as an International Trading Manager. Our condolences extend to his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. n Richard CHAPELOW BA (2007) We were much saddened to hear of the tragic death of Richard whilst on holiday with friends in Portugal. Richard was a hugely popular Latymerian who returned for the 2007 reunion last year. Many of his friends recently attended a memorial service for Richard at St Nicholas’ Church, Chiswick. Richard had graduated from University of Leeds in Environment and Business and was working as a senior account manager in marketing and advertising. n Dr Paul COONES MA DPhil (1973) Paul was appointed a Fellow in Geography at Hertford College, Oxford in 1990 after teaching at that college and at Jesus College for some years. Paul retired in 2012 and, amongst his many roles at Hertford, he served as Steward of the Senior Common Room, edited the college magazine and was Dean of Degrees.

He also spent a year as the University Assessor in 2006. His interests lay in geopolitics and historical geography, and he co-authored the Penguin Guide to the Landscape of England and Wales.

A talented musician, he was for many years the leader of the Hertford Bruckner Orchestra and mastermind of their performances. Paul also held the important role of Chairman of the Curators at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, overseeing its restoration. He passed away early in September.

OBITUARIES

n Professor Ted Mountford Still DEELEY BSc PhD FIEE (1945) Ted was a Physics graduate of King’s College London who went on to gain his doctorate in electrical engineering. He worked on the structure underlying DNA, then moved to the Mullard Research Laboratory and Royal Aircraft Establishment before returning to King’s to chair and lead the Electrical Engineering Department. He published more than 70 academic papers over his career.

Ted was an ‘adopted’ member of the Dean family whose sons Chris DEAN (1987) and Stephen DEAN (1991) had both attended Latymer and it was thanks to them that Ted reconnected with Latymer some 20 years ago.

Ted was a great friend to Latymer and a regular supporter of our Bursaries Appeal, having himself benefitted from a Direct Grant scholarship to Latymer.

As well as being a regular attendee at the Latymerians’ Dinners and School music concerts, he was a member of our 1624 Society and never missed the annual 1624 Society event. An incredibly busy man, Ted gave generously of his time to his local community, for example by volunteering with the Scouts as Group Scout Leader of the 1st Osterley over many years. He was also a keen hockey player. n Edmund Charles Thomas EDWARDS MA (1957) Edmund was a modern languages graduate of Jesus College, Cambridge. He worked in exports and held directorships in several companies prior to becoming the MD of White Horse Distillery. n Peter FAKTOR (1949) Peter’s family originated from Czechoslovakia, fleeing from the Nazis in 1939 and leaving behind their property and business. At Latymer, Peter was successful Peter by the Vltava, with Hradcany Castle in the background, Czechoslovakia.

becoming Captain of Boats and Vice-Captain of the School. After National Service he joined the family’s light engineering company moving on to set up agencies to import and distribute Japanese cameras and later moving into boat sales. Peter gained a private pilot’s licence and flew his own plane.

Peter was devoted to his family and could often be found on a touchline supporting his children and grandchildren’s sport. His son, Steve FAKTOR (1974) and grandsons, James FAKTOR (2007) and Tom FAKTOR (2011) were all Oxford Blues. He was also grandfather to Charlotte FAKTOR (2007) and Joe TYLER (2008). Charity work with the Round Table was also important to him during his retirement. n Leslie Arthur Craven HOCHSTRASSER (1938) n Judge Julian LIPTON (1947) Julian initially went into banking with the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China (now Standard Chartered) before moving to Hong Kong Bank and the Bank of Montreal. Then Julian took up law, qualifying as a solicitor and becoming a partner in two law firms.

He was appointed as District Judge (DJ) in 1980 sitting successively in the Shoreditch County Court and at Westminster. In 1992 he was seconded to the High Court as Master (Chancery Division, Queen’s Bench and Taxing Office), before moving back as a DJ to the Mayor’s City of London Court and ending his career as a Crown Court Recorder (1985-98). n Ben MURRAY (2017) Ben joined the Sixth Form from Sherborne and went on to study English at Bristol University. A popular pupil and a strong rugby player, he was in Latymer’s 1st XV. His sudden passing in May shocked his many Latymer friends and we extend our sympathy and condolences to his father, James (1986), and the family. n Dr John Charles NICHOLLS (1958) John was a member of our 1624 Society. He was an emeritus consultant colorectal surgeon working in West Hertfordshire and North West London, and a Visiting Professor at Imperial College. He had been prolific in publishing journal articles and was President of the Coloproctology Associations of Great Britain & Ireland and Europe, and editor of Colorectal Disease. His sister, Joan, had married his classmate, Bryan RUSSELL (1958). n Edward PRETTEJOHN (1942) Edward left school to serve in the RAF during WWII as a radio operator. His subsequent career was spent in farming. His School memories were recounted vividly to our Archives once, including, “the nearby butchers selling hot faggots at 4d, and hot potage at 2d and custard trifle at 2d.

Memories of Mr. Parish (form L5B in 1938/39) and of his insistence of the importance of precis of clear thinking to get the real meaning of anything and to put it down in order of importance - a great help in my later life”. n David Edwin SMITH MA (1951)

David had two brothers at Latymer, Michael (1949) and the late Maurice IVES-LACY (1954).

He went to Peterhouse, Cambridge to read Biological Sciences and stayed on for an Agriculture Diploma. His career was spent at

King Edward VII School, King’s Lynn in Norfolk where he taught Biology and was a Housemaster and Head of Lower School. In retirement, he was a governor of several primary schools and he taught English to migrant children. David was a member of the Ramblers Association and acted as a guide to the gardens at Sandringham House. He was also a lay preacher. n Nigel Howard Simms PIERCE (1972) Nigel studied at both Kingston College and Portsmouth Polytechnic.

He was a Labour Councillor elected in 2014 to Basingstoke and Deane Council. At the time of his sad passing in April, he chaired their Scrutiny Committee.

He had worked in human resources and related areas for Surrey County Council, the Public and Commercial Services Union, Cubic Transportation Systems, Drake and Scull as well as Transport for London. Nigel ran his own company, Didache.

n William Albert TRUSSLER (1943) William passed away in December leaving wife, Audrey, and his three children. He was 91yrs old. His engagement with alumni was brief spanning recent years but he described fond memories of his time at Latymer. He was in the army and air cadets, and recalled parading on the playground, watching vapour trails as German bombers passed over. He also remembered the barrage balloon anchored on the Wood Lane cricket pitch and two former masters: ‘Inky’ Steafel and ‘Cupid’ Stolley.

William kindly supported the School’s Bursaries Appeal in recognition of how, as the son of a colliery pump man, his LCC Scholarship to Latymer had opened up his career opportunities. William served in the Navy and Merchant Navy before entering the travel industry. n Douglas WEBBER (1946) Douglas spent his career with the Post Office and British Telecom for 38 years, retiring as Executive Engineer. He was a Friend of the RAF Museum, Hendon. Douglas was a member of the School’s 1624 Society.

Nigel Pierce

Nigel had formed a Christian Theatre Company in 1993, Signpost Theatre. In 2006, he became Chairman of the Haymarket Theatre Trust in Basingstoke, responsible for setting up an arts training bursary. Nigel chaired Basingstoke’s All Churches Group and was a Trustee at the Camrose Centre, supporting vulnerable people. Married with three sons and a daughter, he will be greatly missed. n James Desmond THAIN (1936) Desmond won a County Scholarship to Latymer Upper in 1931, going on to excel in modern languages and boxing.

His school boxing career was successful as he won medals annually from 1932-36, and fought for the school team. He also had a brief boxing career in the Territorial Army prior to WWII. He was disappointed to leave Latymer after gaining his School Certificate, having failed to persuade his father to let him try for university. He worked for the London County Council in 1936, and signed up for evening classes in German. When war broke out, he enrolled in the Princess Louise’s Kensington Regiment. That unit was part of the 51st (Highland) Infantry Division that surrendered to the Germans at St Valéry en Caux, 12 June 1940. Desmond spent the next five years as a Prisoner of War in Eastern Poland where his fluency in German saw him made camp interpreter. He later left the camp to work on a farm where he made friends with local Poles and Ukrainian forced labourers.

Once liberated, he finished his service as a Staff Sergeant working with German POWs in GB. When finally demobbed, he joined the War Office (later the Ministry of Defence), where he met his wife, Jean. Their married life began with a post in the colonial administration of the Gold Coast (now Ghana) subsequently over a twenty year period, they saw a number of MOD postings both in the UK and abroad and produced three children along the way. In retirement, Desmond and Jean enjoyed travelling, with Scotland and Cornwall as favourite destinations. They also went on driving tours, but only to countries where Desmond could indulge his love of languages by speaking to the locals.

He was always grateful for the education he received at Latymer, and was delighted when his son Philip (1978) was also admitted, on a Direct Grant. In his retirement, he also enjoyed the School’s hospitality to Latymerians. Conscious of the privilege both he and Philip had enjoyed in attending the School at the local authority’s expense, he was a regular and enthusiastic supporter of the Foundation’s Bursaries Appeal.

n Professor Geoffrey James WHITTY CBE MA FRSA (1964) Geoff graduated from St John’s College, Cambridge and completed his PGCE at the Institute of Education (IOE). He taught at Lampton School, Hounslow and Thomas Bennett School, Crawley. From there he was a teacher trainer at the University of Bath. He subsequently held academic posts at the Open University, King’s College London, Bristol Polytechnic, Goldsmiths College and at the IOE as Professor of Sociology of Education. He is mostly noted for his time as Director of the IOE, a post he held from 2000 to 2010.

Following retirement as Director, Geoff took up posts at the universities of Bath, Bath Spa and Newcastle in Australia.

Geoff’s career was defined by a concern for equity in education. Alongside an illustrious academic career with influential leadership in higher education roles, he worked to further social justice. He volunteered in the 1960s to teach immigrant children in London. Geoff’s writings and wider contributions underpin many commentators of contemporary political debate around social mobility, equality of opportunity and social justice.

He published Sociology and School Knowledge in 1985 and several other books.

He was also involved in educating on sex, sexuality and HIV. This work supported a roll-out of new approaches to sex education that both destigmatised HIV and HIV education and empowered young people to protect their health.

He served as President of the British Educational Research Association (BERA) and of the College of Teachers. He was a Board member of Ofsted and Specialist Advisor to successive House of Commons Education Select Committees, helping guide a re-writing of national school admissions policy to facilitate fairer access for children of all backgrounds. With the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland, he developed innovative new teacher standards to raise teacher professionalism. Later he helped introduce Teach First in England.

He received a CBE in 2011 for services to teacher education.

Geoff was on Latymer’s Governors’ Education Committee for several years; we had been pleased to recruit such an eminent academic. His brother Larry, Lord WHITTY (1961) also attended Latymer.
