On the 20-21 March 1951, Julius Caesar was staged at Hammersmith Town Hall with Marion as Calpurnia and Aisla as Portia, as previously reported in your correspondence. MEMORIES OF DAVE HODGES, RIP Dear Editor, I was stunned to read that Dave Hodges had passed away last year. Dave was born and spent his early years living in Australia. He and I were good friends at school. An early memory of Dave was of when I joined his family on a motoring trip to Germany in 1959. We drove through Belgium and Luxembourg to Bonn to meet up with their family, who had a superb model train layout. Dave and I were sophisticated, seasoned international travellers by then having, the previous year, been to
France on the summer school trip overseen by Mr and Mrs Wiggins and Colin TURNER (1950). I still have a postcard,
8
which I sent to my parents from that trip to France in which I told them that neither of us were seasick on the ferry
and that we were sharing a room; I am confident that put their minds at ease. I am sure that Mr and Mrs Wiggins thought Colin Turner was a tall 6th former who had mistakenly joined the group because I seem to recall they would include him in the frequent headcounts. A year or so later Dave and I shared a chalet at Butlin’s in Bognor Regis, courtesy of Dave’s aunt who worked there. Dave was the first boy I knew who had a scalextric set and several of us staged long races, closing the curtains
to simulate nighttime driving. Perhaps some others in the group remember. His passing was sad news indeed. Tony TREADWELL (1965)

We sadly note the passing of these Latymerians: ■ Stewart Malcolm HAESLER (1954)
OBITUARIES
■ Alan Mark STUBBS (1951) ■ David TATE (1953) David had a career in accountancy. ■ Dave WESTAWAY (1964) ■ Brian John WESTERN (1952) ■ Frederick Charles AMES (1950) Fred worked at GEC before National Service in the RAF. A decade in a mechanical drawing office in the motor industry preceded almost thirty years as a water treatment engineer. ■ Leonard BROAD (1939) Leonard joined the Civil Service on leaving School, but WWII interrupted this. He served as a Captain in the Indian Army, and saw action with the 10th Gurkha Rifles in Burma. He resumed his career in the Department of Trade and Industry in their Export Credits Guarantee Dept., working for 43 years and rising to Assistant Secretary (Head of Division). His two brothers Cyril (1947) and Ron (1938) also attended Latymer. ■ Dr David John DAY BSc PhD (1940) David joined Latymer in 1933 with his brothers Allan (1947), Colin and Brian, following their father’s example. David won a scholarship to study Physics at the Royal College of Science. After graduating, he was in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in charge of radar targeting of enemy bombers flying in over East Anglia. After the War, he was chief lens designer at Wray Optics.
■ Dr Nicholas Rodney James FIELLER MS MSc PhD CStat (1959) Nick passed away in Sheffield in March. He had graduated in Mathematics from King’s College Cambridge then obtained his Masters from Birmingham and completed his doctorate at Hull. He was one on our list of ‘Distinguished Latymerians’, as a former President of the British Classification Society, and he used to edit one of the Royal Statistical Society’s journals. He had retired from Sheffield University in 2012, where he had been a senior lecturer in statistics. Earlier in his career he had taught at Edinburgh University. He wrote, Basics of Matrix Algebra for Statistics with R in his retirement. Our condolences to his son, Dan and brother, David (1958) and their families. ■ Kenneth William George MARTIN (1948) Ken was educated at Latymer during the War years; a doodlebug injured him on his way to the School one day! After leaving Latymer, he worked in a bank and subsequently in life assurance, firstly for the Sun Life and then for The Scottish Provident Institution as an assistant manager in the London City branch. He became manager of a new and later very successful branch in Harrow, remaining there until his retirement in 1990.
Ken
He enjoyed 26 years of active retirement before his death in November 2016. He leaves his beloved wife of 63 years, Sheila, their two sons, two granddaughters and a great granddaughter. Ken was a member of the MCC.
■ Barry David EDWARDS BSc (1952)
■ Peter James HASLAM BSc CEng FIProdE (1957)
Barry attended Latymer from 1942-52 and passed away in November. He was the son of William (1924) and his aunt had attended Godolphin. Barry graduated from Imperial College in Physics and subsequently worked for Easams, GEC and Marconi.
Peter studied technology at Northampton before becoming an engineer with D Napier and Son, Acton and then spent his working life as a management consultant, rising to director level in two major companies. His hobbies were golf, travel, reading and gardening.
■ Peter Ivor FRY (1941)
■ Ronald Edwin HEDGES (1936)
Peter was 15 and being educated in Alexandria, Egypt when WWII broke out, he relocated to London and joined Latymer. On leaving School he joined the army serving in France and Germany. Peter married and started his family before emigrating to Toronto, Canada to work for Chevrolet.
Ron enjoyed his time at Latymer and affectionately recalled the tolerance of his teachers. He was on a London County Council scholarship that came with a uniform grant of 9s a term and then 15s in the 6th Form. Ron was always grateful for this support.
Home with his wife and four children became Burnaby, Vancouver where he worked in traffic planning and then property appraising. Skiing, shooting, music, boating (of all descriptions) and furniture making were his hobbies.
He worked as a government chemist for his entire career, retiring in 1971 when he became a Youth Hostel warden for four years. Latterly he lived in Ledbury, Herefordshire. ■ Peter LEEVERS (1964) Peter read Geography at Sussex University after leaving Latymer. Peter was a Quaker and his radical politics started at Latymer when he was introduced to CND. Peter regularly campaigned, most recently opposing Brexit and forced adoption. He held deep concerns for people in trouble, less fortunate, or under privileged. Peter worked for London Transport before retraining as a social worker. He then worked for Islington and Dorset’s Social Services and was active in his trade union, NALGO.

Peter on his 92nd birthday in 2016
In 1968, Peter organised four friends and a Mini to travel to Paris at the height of Les Events, to join the revolution. The Mini broke down a few miles from Calais and the revolution had to do without them. His family said, “Peter loved dancing, he lived passionately and danced like Jagger!” Peter never lost his early loves of stamp collecting, birdwatching and Geography.
■ Professor Philip PALMER BSc PhD FIET FRAS CEng MAIAA (1973) Latymer was the making of my late brother, Philip. His first form master said, “he needed a good shake every morning” and it must have worked. He developed an avid interest in science and later studied Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Leicester where he gained a first class degree and then a doctorate at the University of Cambridge in 1981. After many research fellowship posts, he worked for the University of Surrey Space Centre in 1990 specialising in satellites. He became Professor of Astro Dynamics in 2013 and retired in February 2016. Philip was regarded as an academic through and through, but he also enjoyed classical guitar, walking and family history. He was a member of the original Rock Choir and trained to be a counsellor in his spare time! Philip maintained his links with the school through the Latymerians’ Network, and attended many happy reunions. Sadly, Philip’s life was cut short through an aggressive untreatable cancer and he passed away in November 2016. Philip leaves his son Costas, partner Maria and our mother. David PALMER (1969), brother ■ Ivan Edward POULTON (1940) At a recent reunion Ivan recalled Mr Evans (Hake) experimenting with boiling a kettle, which emptied itself on to the ceiling, and attending lunchtime gramophone recitals put on by Mr A.J. Blades. It was Beethoven’s 7th Symphony that started his love of classical music. Ivan was also keen on astronomy. He supported the School’s Bursaries Appeal. Ivan served in the Army in Italy in WWII and later in Germany. From 1948-94 he was a Travel Manager with Moral Re-Armament (now called, Initiatives of Change), particularly trying to foster a better understanding between England and the communities in Northern Ireland. In retirement he and his wife, Maisie, travelled widely. ■ Dr John A ROGANS BSc MD (1949) John graduated in Civil Engineering from Imperial College, London in 1955 and served as a lieutenant in the Royal Engineers for his National Service before working as an engineer in London, Labrador and Vancouver building bridges, ports and radar stations. He gained his medical doctorate from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver in 1970 practising in family and emergency medicine in Prince Rupert and Ladysmith, BC, Matheson, Ontario, where he was a Crown Coroner and in Brownsville, Texas. He also worked in Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Peru. John also appeared as a film extra and wrote magazine pieces, three novels and eight screenplays including A Doctor in Strange Places.
He contested Warwick and Leamington in the 1964 General Election for the Labour Party, and was successfully elected MP for Acton in the 1970 Election. He lost the seat to Sir George Young in 1974, but a few weeks later, he won the Newham South By-election and he served as their MP until 1997. He was co-opted to serve on the GLC’s Planning and Transport committees and in the 70s chaired a parliamentary committee on European legislation. Nigel always lived in and around Hammersmith and was often seen cycling to and from meetings. He supported the School by regularly coming to talk to Sixth Formers about current affairs. ■ Peter Kenneth WORSLEY BSc (1948) Peter studied Physics and Mathematics at Northampton Polytechnic for a University of London external degree. Following his National Service in the RAF he had a long career in the sales and marketing of high tech products for a number of firms.
Peter
In retirement he became active in the local art community in Santa Barbara, California and was an accomplished fine-art figurative painter, exploring the interactions between ordinary people in everyday settings with his own studio and gallery. He published Marketing For Professional Artists, which included a detailed discussion about marketing and selling your art. When we created the US Latymerians’ Council (now USFOL) Peter joined their committee and served for a number of years, attending our San Diego gatherings. ■ Royston Stanley STOCK BA (1947) Roy Stock died in October 2016. At School Roy’s interests centred on music. He and friends often listened to symphonies in the record shops’ booths. Sailing, rowing and camping with the scouts were other youthful past times. Roy went up to Cambridge on a Minor Scholarship to Jesus College. He rowed in his College VIII that twice rowed Head of the River, then beat the US Olympic VIII to win the Ladies’ Plate at Henley. Roy completed his National Service in the RAF. Roy worked his way up the hard way from selling soap door-to-door to the top management in S.H. Benson, then the UK’s top marketing agency where he met his wife, Jo. In the 1959 General Election Roy stood as a parliamentary candidate for the Conservatives in an unwinnable seat. He went on to be Marketing Director at British Rail and at Unicef. In retirement Roy regularly played the organ at his local church and ran his own printing business; inspired by The Good Life, he made their home in Essex self-sufficient in 6 acres. ■ Dr Arthur William Stanley TARRANT BSc PhD FInstP FCIBSE FSLL CPhys CEng (1947)
Nigel
■ Nigel John SPEARING BA (1950) Nigel Spearing (1950) sadly died at the beginning of January. He was School Captain and a member of our first Hamburg Exchange with the Johanneum, remaining life-long friends with his exchange partner, Dr Korte. He served as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Signals Corps before going up to St Catharine’s College, Cambridge to read Geography. After graduating he then taught at Wandsworth School and Elliot School, Putney.
Arthur studied Physics at Chelsea Polytechnic, graduating with a BSc. He then worked for eight years at the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington before joining the lecturing staff at Battersea College of Technology. He played a substantial role in it becoming the University of Surrey at Guildford and served on the University’s Senate and Council. He was a specialist in the physics of lighting, colour and colour measurement, and lighting engineering and he was a lecturer in these fields. Arthur received the Lighting Division Award and Bronze Medal of the Chartered Institute of Building Engineers and he was an honorary member of the Colour Group of Great Britain.
