Dr. Emily Letran Celebrating Vietnamese Stories Across the Globe and America’s 250 Years of Opportunity Hello all, Welcome to this special edition of the Los Angeles Tribune – Viet Nam Journal.

This issue is dedicated to celebrating the remarkable stories of Vietnamese people around the world and expressing our gratitude to the United States of America as it commemorates its 250th birthday.

For nearly two and a half centuries, America has stood as a symbol of freedom, opportunity, innovation, and hope. For millions of immigrants, refugees, and dreamers, it has represented the possibility of building a better life. Among those who answered that call were hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese refugees who arrived on American shores following the Vietnam War, carrying little more than faith, resilience, and determination.

Over the past five decades, Vietnamese Americans have helped enrich this nation. They have served in the military, led businesses, advanced science and medicine, created art and films, strengthened communities, and contributed to every sector of society. Their achievements show the enduring power of opportunity and the human spirit.

This issue highlights inspiring Vietnamese stories from around the globe—stories of courage, perseverance, leadership, creativity, philanthropy, and service. From veterans and public servants to entrepreneurs, artists, filmmakers, scientists, and community leaders, these individuals remind us that our journeys may begin in different places, but our contributions can leave a lasting impact on the world.

We also pause to honor the generations of Americans whose sacrifices have preserved the freedoms we cherish today. We recognize the veterans who served our nation, the families who supported them, and the countless individuals who helped make America the place of hope for people seeking liberty and opportunity.

As a Vietnamese refugee who found a home in America, this celebration is especially meaningful to me. Like many in our community, I arrived with uncertainty but was given the opportunity to learn, grow, contribute, and pursue dreams that once seemed impossible. For that, I remain profoundly grateful.

The Vietnamese story is now an important chapter in the American story. It is a story of resilience overcoming adversity, of gratitude expressed through service, and of communities coming together to build a brighter future.

As you turn these pages, I invite you to celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of Vietnamese individuals across the globe, reflect on the opportunities that made these achievements possible, and honor the values of freedom, perseverance, and hope that unite us all.

Thank You, America Congratulations on Your 250th Birthday A s America celebrates its 250th birthday, I join

millions of grateful Americans in honoring a nation that has stood as a symbol of freedom, opportunity, and hope for people from every corner of the world. For me, this celebration is deeply personal.

Forty five years ago, as a young Vietnamese girl, I could never have imagined that one day I would be writing these words as an American citizen, business owner, healthcare professional, author, filmmaker, and community leader. At the age of thirteen, I left Vietnam with my aunt in search of freedom. Like thousands of other “boat people,” we risked everything for the possibility of a better future. We spent seven days at Thank You America Forum sea, uncertain if we would survive the journey. Pirates, storms, starvation, and death were realities faced by many refugees fleeing the aftermath of war. As we celebrate this historic milestone, we must also remember those whose sacrifices made these opportunities possible. I extend my deepest gratitude to the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who have served throughout our nation’s history.

Their courage preserved the freedoms that so many of us enjoy today.

The Vietnam War remains one of the most complex chapters in American history. The conflict left wounds on both nations and changed the lives of millions of families.

Yet amid the tragedy emerged stories of extraordinary courage, honor, and sacrifice.

I have had the privilege of meeting and learning from remarkable veterans and historians who have dedicated their lives to preserving truth and honoring those who served.

Among them is Senator Richard H. Black, a decorated Marine Corps combat veteran who flew 269 combat missions in the CH-46 helicopter during the Vietnam War. His service represents the courage and commitment displayed by countless American servicemen and women.

Veteran and author Richard Botkin has courageously shared firsthand accounts of combat, helping future generations understand the realities of war and the resilience of those who served.

I also recognize Parker W. Borg, whose efforts have I would also like to recognize Stephen B. The story of America is also the story of immigrants and refugees who came seeking freedom and then gave back to the nation that welcomed them.

Few communities illustrate this better than the Vietnamese-American community. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese refugees arrived in America with little more than determination, faith, and hope. Many arrived without speaking English.

Many had lost family members, careers, homes, and everything they had built.

Yet through hard work and perseverance, Vietnamese Americans have become one of the most successful immigrant communities in the nation.

They built businesses that created jobs. They became physicians, dentists, engineers, educators, scientists, entrepreneurs, artists, military officers, public servants, and elected leaders. They revitalized neighborhoods, strengthened local economies, and contributed immeasurably to American society.

Most importantly, they embraced the freedoms of their adopted homeland and became proud Americans. Many Vietnamese Americans have gone beyond building successful lives and have chosen to serve America directly.

Among them is Colonel Truong Ngoc Anh, affectionately known as “The Bomb Lady,” whose distinguished military career exemplifies the dedication and patriotism of Vietnamese Americans serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Another remarkable example is Hung Cao, who arrived in America as a refugee and rose through the ranks of the United States Navy. Today, as Acting United States Secretary of the Navy, he represents one of the highest achievements of a refugee who embraced the opportunities of America and dedicated his life to serving the nation that gave his family a new beginning.

The Vietnamese-American community has also transformed entire industries. Few examples are more striking than the nail industry. What began with a handful of Vietnamese refugees learning manicure skills in California evolved into a multibillion-dollar industry that has created economic opportunities for hundreds of thousands of families across America.

Visionaries such as Thai Tran and Charlie Quy Ton helped elevate the profession and build enterprises that empowered generations of immigrant families to achieve financial independence. Their success stories demonstrate how Vietnamese Americans have not only participated in the American economy but have helped shape it.

Internationally acclaimed artist Daniel Winn has elevated Vietnamese-American artistic achievement onto the global stage through his sculptures, paintings, and multimedia works that explore identity, humanity, and transformation.

Filmmaker Jenny Ai Trinh Thai has dedicated herself to preserving refugee stories and historical narratives through documentary filmmaking, ensuring that future generations understand both the tragedies and triumphs that shaped our community.

The arts continue to build bridges between cultures. One historic milestone was A Fragile Flower, recognized as the first Vietnamese feature film filmed entirely in the United States. The film received multiple international awards and demonstrated the growing creative influence of Vietnamese Americans within global cinema. More than entertainment, it symbolized the journey of a community whose stories have become an integral part of the American narrative.

The Vietnamese-American community has also enriched America’s cultural and artistic landscape.

The next generation Legendary actress Kieu Chinh has spent decades using her art and humanitarian work to bridge cultures and tell continues to inspire. stories of resilience, hope, and reconciliation.

This milestone anniversary is a testament to the power of remembrance, the preservation of heritage, and the enduring spirit of the Vietnamese community worldwide.

Their generosity reflects a core value shared by many immigrants: gratitude expressed through service.

These stories are not isolated achievements. Together they represent a powerful legacy of resilience, contribution, and patriotism.

Amanda Nguyen—scientist, entrepreneur, civil rights advocate, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, and astronaut— has become a global symbol of what is possible when opportunity meets determination. Her groundbreaking achievements remind us that the children of refugees are now helping shape the future of science, public policy, and humanity itself.

The spirit of giving back is equally evident in the philanthropic leadership of Vietnamese Americans.

Business and community leaders such as Ngo Tuan Kiet and Chinh Chu, have demonstrated how success can be used to uplift others. Through charitable initiatives, educational programs, community development projects, cultural preservation efforts, and humanitarian work, they have invested in both the Vietnamese-American community and society at large.

As the Vietnamese Heritage Museum celebrates its 10th Anniversary, we honor the vision, dedication, and perseverance of its founder, Mr. Chau Thuy. A former Vietnamese refugee and survivor of the boat people journey, Mr. Thuy has devoted the past decade to preserving the stories, artifacts, and memories of the Vietnamese diaspora for future generations. Under his leadership, the Vietnamese Heritage Museum has become an important cultural institution, safeguarding the history of Vietnamese refugees and educating the broader public about their sacrifices, resilience, and contributions.

The Vietnamese-American story is now inseparable from the American story. It is a story of people who arrived with little but hope, embraced the opportunities of freedom, and helped make America stronger, more prosperous, and more vibrant for future generations. As a refugee who found a home in America, I understand that freedom should never be taken for granted. It is protected by those willing to serve, strengthened by those willing to sacrifice, and sustained by citizens who continue to uphold the values upon which this nation was founded.

America’s story is not perfect, but it is extraordinary.

It is a story of resilience over despair.

A story of opportunity over limitation.

A story of freedom over fear.

A story of people from different backgrounds united by a common belief that tomorrow can be better than today.

My own journey is proof of that promise. From a frightened thirteen-year-old refugee crossing the sea in search of freedom to a proud Amercan celebrating this nation’s 250th birthday, I remain profoundly grateful.

On this historic occasion, I offer my heartfelt thanks to America.

Thank you for welcoming refugees and immigrants seeking a better life.

Thank you to the veterans who defended liberty.

Thank you to the generations of Americans who built a nation where dreams can become reality.

FROM VIETNAMESE REFUGEES

TO AFRICAN ROYALTY

P

lease join us in celebrating a truly extraordinary turn of events that has befallen our film crew: Four Americans of Vietnamese refugee descent traveled to Africa to screen our film, Book of Death, and to shoot the remaining scenes. The support we received from the African people far exceeded our wildest expectations. From young to old, from village schools to royal courts and remote tribes—spanning kingdoms both French-and English-speaking—audiences cheered with joy as we introduced our film to them, even though their internet connections were often unreliable.

Nevertheless, we managed to find ways to share the film with them, whether via mobile phones or laptops...

I soon realized that whether or not they could actually watch the film wasn’t what mattered most to them. They were simply happy that we had come to Africa and chosen to film *them*. I found myself with a spontaneous cast of extras—volunteers—recruited right off the streets.

1. IVORY COAST In Ivory Coast, we were welcomed with open arms and treated like royalty, escorted and protected by a full military platoon.

We were warmly received by numerous government ministers—covering portfolios such as education, tourism, agriculture, and sports—as well as by tribal chiefs. They welcomed us with vibrant, traditional performances featuring colorful tribal dances and songs.

They even led us up a Sacred Mountain to seek blessings from their God. The most memorable encounter was with Nana (King) René Diby Djedjmel of Lopou—a powerful former Minister of Sports and the Chief of all tribal chiefs in Ivory Coast. His power, wealth, and high status were evident in the expensive carpets adorning his floors, his sprawling, magnificent palace, and his noble Queen—a psychologist who is as intellectually brilliant as she is beautiful. Nana Rene speaks excellent English. However, unaware of just how important he was, we inadvertently declined his invitation to attend a banquet at his palace. He is a very forthright man, and he made his displeasure with us quite obvious. He remarked that he had personally asked his wife to cook for us, yet we had refused to stay. He had even arranged for over a dozen tribes to perform dances and songs to welcome us. His anger left us feeling deeply apologetic.

Suddenly, a heavy rain began to fall, so we decided to stay and join him for the feast—a celebration filled with food, singing, and dancing. He was delighted and forgave us! He even bestowed upon us the titles of Princesses and Prince of his tribe!

2. GHANA By the time we left Ivory Coast and arrived in Ghana, it was already pitch black outside; yet, the King NANA OSOMPA NYAMEKYE, the Queen, and several tribal chiefs were there to welcome us with a grand, festive reception right outside the airport gates—complete with singing, dancing, drumming, flags, and fans. We were utterly astonished and felt incredibly honored.

The very next day, they organized a ceremony to bestow [Dr. Emily Letran - APOMUDZENHEMAA royal titles upon our entire delegation! It was yet (Queen Mother responsible for health and wellness) another surprise from (King ) NANA OSOMPA NYAMEKYE. NANA EFUA EGYIRWA I] [Ngoc Le — APAGYAHENE (Ambassador in charge of Operations and Mobilization) of Gomoa Otapirow NANA KOFI ABIR I]

The festival lasted all day—it was exhausting, but incredibly joyful thanks to the hospitality of the tribes.

Everyone wore their finest attire to welcome us! It was truly an honor!

We took some chiefs shopping at a supermarket; they absolutely loved the Western whisky and sweet treats.

We also purchased candies and treats to distribute to the villagers. Additionally, we left behind a sum of money to treat them to a meal. I heard that, traditionally, a cow or goat would be slaughtered to celebrate, but—thank goodness—this act of killing did not take place. Had it occurred, I certainly would have intervened to stop it.

The impoverished children there showed us such immense affection. Each child handed me a handwritten list of the toys they wished for—everything from Barbie dolls and toy cars to shoes and sweets. Looking at their childlike, scrawling handwriting, I truly hope to make their wishes come true during my next visit. As for the students, they vied with one another to give me their WhatsApp numbers so I could send them our film to watch, since I no longer had the time to screen films for them at their school!

3. SOUTH AFRICA Bidding farewell to the rainy, sweltering heat of West Africa—and leaving behind the tribal lands and pothole-riddled roads of Ghana—we arrived in South Africa: a land of warm sunshine and the most modern civilization on the African continent. The weather had turned chilly, for May marks the onset of winter in South Africa.

I silently offered my gratitude to the heavens for allowing my children to be born in the United States, where they could enjoy all the privileges and advantages of the civilized world.

I also gave thanks for having been born in Vietnam— one of the world’s poorest nations, once torn apart and devastated by war—only to eventually drift across the seas and become a citizen of the United States, the most powerful and prosperous nation on earth. This intricate twist of fate compelled me to spend half a lifetime in contemplation, ultimately leading me to a profound realization regarding my worldview: that I must share my good fortune—to the best of my ability—with those less fortunate than myself across the globe. The time has come to give back and to share my blessings with humanity.

We were comfortably settled within the luxurious *Emperors Palace* hotel complex—an experience so opulent it felt as though we were staying in Las Vegas.

In a flight of just a few hours, we had traveled from one of Africa’s poorest regions to one of its wealthiest. It truly is a strange twist of fate—that a human being’s destiny is determined by the specific place on this earth where they are born.

I came to a profound realization that the heavens had guided me to create the film *Book of Death* (Sổ Sinh Tử)— using it as a vehicle to travel the world and gain a deep, comprehensive understanding of the human condition. It allowed me to grasp the *why*: why I was born in a poor nation, subsequently lived in a wealthy one, and then returned to offer aid to the impoverished land on earth.

I have gained an unprecedented, panoramic perspective, enabling me to truly comprehend how human destiny ultimately rests in the hands of an Almighty God. Whether you are wealthy and successful or impoverished and struggling, your fate—your triumphs and failures in this fleeting human lifetime—is ultimately determined by the karmic forces accumulated over countless past lives. Gaining this profound insight has led me to view fame and fortune with detachment.

For at any moment—depending entirely on the karma you yourself have created—you could either lose everything or gain everything. I encourage you to read the parable of “The Old Man Who Lost His Horse” to truly grasp this lesson regarding the nature of loss and gain.

Therefore, do not become overly sorrowful or overly elated regarding your current circumstances. Accept your reality, strive to overcome every adversity, and hold onto hope for a brighter future. Conversely, if you are currently enjoying a life of comfort and privilege, consider sharing your blessings with those around you; this will help you avoid falling into arrogance, decadence, or entanglement in the illusory allure of fame and fortune.

Many invited us to visit their tribes, located hundreds of kilometers away. They told me that the majority of South Africa’s wealth and land is owned by white people; the indigenous people own very little and remain impoverished. I promised to visit another time, as we had run out of time on this trip. When watching the film, they cheered joyfully whenever they saw us receiving awards!

In short, we successfully completed our final mission: bringing our film to audiences across the globe! My only regret is that we could not accept invitations from kings and presidents of several other African nations due to our lack of time. We were forced to cancel our planned trip to East Africa—specifically Tanzania, where we intended to attend the La Vang Marian celebration and help build a church for the poor—as well as our trip to Kenya, where we planned to assist impoverished women and children; both trips were cancelled due to the Ebola outbreak. Once again, God and the Buddha protected us before we departed. Prior to the outbreak, we had— quite coincidentally—already cancelled our East African trip out of fear of war. Little did we know that war would prove to be the lesser threat, while the epidemic would be the far greater one.

During our time in Africa, between 50,000 and 75,000 residents of Orange County, California—our home—were forced to evacuate due to fears of a chemical explosion at a local plant (GKN Aerospace). Everyone was anxious, yet I remained at peace, for I knew that God, Buddha, and the angels would watch over my children while I was away, dedicating myself to caring for others.

And indeed, my family did not have to evacuate at all!

Who could ever imagine being forced into an emergency evacuation—a situation akin to living in a city under siege, terrified of bombs and gunfire? In a city that was, just moments before, wealthy and peaceful, some people didn’t even have time to grab any belongings before fleeing. Let us learn from this experience and cultivate empathy for the people living in war-torn cities.

At the same time, let us mentally prepare ourselves for any and all emergency situations. Disasters created by human hands are often far more terrifying than natural disasters. Do not fall into the complacency of believing that, simply because we live in a wealthy and powerful nation, disaster will somehow spare us.

Before embarking on charitable missions abroad, I always prepared an emergency kit for my children to keep at the ready. I instructed them: “Calamity can strike at any moment—whether for your parents while overseas, or for you right here in the U.S. Should an emergency arise, simply grab that bag of documents, take the dog and the two cats with you, and that will be enough.”

Consequently, my children remained fully prepared— even while living happily in the United States—for I knew that happiness can be incredibly fleeting in this turbulent world.

From Refugee to Serial Entrepreneur: The Remarkable Journey of “The King of Egg Rolls” in Côte d’Ivoire

After leaving Cambodia, Mr. Ta secretly boarded a freight vessel alongside two other Vietnamese refugees. Like countless others seeking a new life, they hoped the ship was headed toward the United States.

Instead, fate had other plans.

The vessel sailed toward Africa.

During our visit, we shared a meal in a small local restaurant surrounded by native Ivorians. Together, we enjoyed traditional dishes of baked chicken, fish, and attiéké—a beloved cassava- based staple of Côte d’Ivoire. It was a powerful reminder of how cultures can blend and enrich one another through mutual respect and understanding.

Mr. Ta’s life story embodies many of the themes explored in our documentary Book of Death: survival, resilience, faith, freedom, and the enduring pursuit of the American Dream—even when that dream unfolds in unexpected places.

His journey challenges conventional definitions of success. He did not arrive in America. He did not possess wealth, influence, or privilege. Instead, he arrived alone on a wooden raft carrying little more than faith and determination.

Yet he built a legacy.

Ông nói tiếng Anh rất giỏi. Tuy nhiên chúng tôi không biết ông quan trọng đến như vậy nên vô tình đã từ chối lời mời dự tiệc tại dinh thự của ông. Chúng tôi dẫn các tù trường đi mua quà trong siêu thị, họ thích rượu tây và bánh kẹo của Mỹ! Tôi còn mua bánh kẹo để tặng cho dân chúng. Ngoài ra chúng tôi để lại 1 số tiền để đãi họ ăn. Nghe nói đúng ra phải mổ bò dê để ăn mừng nhưng tạ ơn trời cảnh giết chóc này đã không xảy Trời bỗng dưng đổ mưa lớn, chúng tôi đành ở lại dự ra. Nếu có thì tôi sẽ ngăn cản. tiệc ăn uống ca múa với ông. Ông rất vui và tha thứ cho chúng tôi! Ông còn phong tặng chúng tôi tước hiệu công Những trẻ em nghèo vô cùng yêu quý chúng tôi. Khí hậu trở quạt đón chào linh đình trước cổng phi trường. Chúng lạnh vì tháng 5 là mùa đông Nam Phi. tôi vô cùng ngạc nhiên và cảm thấy vinh dự.

Chúng tôi được an vị trong khu khách sạn Hoàng Gia Hôm sau họ đã tổ chức 1 buổi phong tứơc vương và hậu (EMPERORS PALACE) sang trọng như đang ở Las Vegas. cho tất cả phái đoàn chúng tôi! Trước khi đi làm từ thiện trên thế giới, tôi luôn luôn chuẩn bị 1 túi đồ khẩn cấp cho các con đem đi. Tôi dặn dò các con: tai ương có thể đến bất cứ lúc nào với ba mẹ ở nước ngoài và cho các con ở Mỹ. Nếu có tình huống khẩn cấp cứ mang túi đồ giấy tờ đó, mang theo con chó và 2 con mèo theo mình là đủ rồi. Nên các con tôi đã có sự chuẩn bị đầy đủ dù đang ở Mỹ rất hạnh phúc bởi vì tôi biết rằng hạnh phúc có thể rất phù du trong thế giới đầy biến động này.
