HOLD IT! DON’T BACK UNDER THAT TRAILER
JUST YET, THERE’S A COUPLE OF THINGS YOU NEED TO REMEMBER BEFORE YOU DO.
1. NICE FLAGS HUH? WHAT DO THEY MEAN? THEY MEAN YOUR TRAILER’S READY TO BACK UNDER AND PULL FROM THE DOOR RIGHT? WRONG!
WHAT IS THAT?
YOU DIDN’T?
2. WEATHER YOUR A ROAD DRIVER (710) OR A STREET DRIVER (705) THE FLAGS TO US MEAN NOTHING, YOU MUST PHYSICALLY GO INSIDE TO VERIFY THAT THE DOORS ON SWING DOOR TRAILERS ARE CLOSED BEFORE YOU BACK UNDERNEATH IT.

u From the driver side, confirm the dolly handle is firmly seated in the notch. If it is not sometimes you can manually push it into the notch. If that doesn’t work, you may have to go back to the tractor and back up a little bit to see if it seats itself. If that does not work, you may have to release the dolly and pull for ward and re-hook. Then confirm the handle is properly seated.
firm when you drop the dolly that it will actually go under the trailer.
RISK FORKING THE TRAILER WITH THE DOLLY!
ING!
When the handle is properly seated in the notch the pin should protrude a little more than an inch.
Passenger side of the dolly; confirm the t wo knuckles or fangs are visible through the 5th wheel frame. Also the bolt below should move for ward.
“After hooking up to any trailer, drivers should confirm they are properly attached to that piece of equipment. Physically look at the 5th wheel connection to the king pin. The jaws of the 5th wheel should be completely wrapped around the collar of the king pin. There should be no room bet ween the 5th wheel plate and the trailer plate. (NO high hooks)
He’s CUTE!
QUIET! I’m watching the video.
3. NOT DOING SO YOU RISK DAMAGING THE DOORS, AND IN MOST CASES TEARING THEM OFF THE TRAILER ALL TOGETHER.......YIKES!
4. SWING DOOR TRAILERS NEED TO BE SET LOWER ON THEIR DOLLY WHEELS UNLIKE ROLL DOOR TRAILERS, THIS LETS THE DOORS CLEAR THE DOCK FOR LOADING & UNLOADING. GOING INSIDE VERIFIES THE DOORS ARE CLOSED, PLUS LETS YOU KNOW IF THE CONVEYOR SYSTEM HAS BEEN RETRACTED AND ALL PERSONNEL ARE CLEAR BEFORE YOU BACK UNDERNEATH.
USE THE QR CODE ABOVE TO SEE DAVE’S EXCITING VIDEO COVERING THIS ISSUE IN DETAIL.
GO FOR THE PERFECT PIN, ON YOUR CONTAINERS! On the front latches, you’ll notice the Pin-Handle is in the middle which indicates that the chassis pin is not in far enough to secure the container.
Move the Pin-Handle as far back as you can, make sure it drops in the notch so it doesn’t move forward. Finally, drop the locking tab in place.
When you confident every things in place, secure it with a Zip-Tie. Over the handle, thru the locking tab and the frame.....BRAVO YOU DID IT!
*Note, when checking the Front Pin this is what you should see from underneath your container. Pin is far enough forward to safely proceed.
On the rear of your container, you can see this is not secured and the latch is not fastened on the bottom. THIS MUST BE SECURE BEFORE YOU LEAVE!
Turn the handle on the bottom to move the latch-tabs to be in a horizontal position thus securing the back of the container to the chassis
HEY DRIVERS!
Check out this exciting video to give you more insight on how to secure those pesky containers.
FINALLY, you can secure the latch handle to the locking tab and your ready for the road. If your not sure remember......G.O.A.L. ( get out and look )
DRIVERS: Whenever you stop on the road and are away and out of sight of your vehicle. Make sure you inspect that it has NOT been tampered with, insure that you are safe to proceed by doing a quick pre-trip before you leave. Check all lights, 5th wheel ( pin ), tires & mirrors, fuel cap & glad hands, seal intact with no sign of entry into trailer.
4 TRUCK BACKING SAFETY TIPS (G.O.A.L.)
Backing up a truck is one of the most dangerous - and potentially expensive - maneuvers that truckers can do and it can be overcome by the use of extra care and caution. BACKING EVENTS REQUIRE EXTREME CAUTION • Backing accidents are the most frequent type of accidents in all of trucking • If you must back up, GET OUT AND LOOK • Check for proper clearance on all six sides: up, down, left, right, front, and rear • Continue to GET OUT AND LOOK multiple times • Don’t just think you’re clear, KNOW you’re clear: GET OUT AND LOOK • Using a ground guide to assist is always a good idea • Even with assistance, it is the driver’s responsibility to not strike anything • GET OUT AND LOOK, even if a dozen people are flagging you back
SEVERE CONSEQUENCES MAY RESULT FROM IMPROPER/ UNSAFE BACKING • Backing into a fixed object, moving object and/or person • Backing over a fixed object, moving object and/or person • Pinning a person • According to the National Safety Council, 1 out of 4 vehicle accidents can be attributed to poor backing techniques. • Backing accidents cause 500 deaths and 15,000 injuries per year.
WHILE YOU ARE BACKING

• Back from the driver’s side • Minimize the distance you need to back. The less ground you cover in reverse; the less chances you will have striking a fixed object. • Have patience & don’t rush • No one ever made up time by backing quickly. Take a deep breath and commit yourself to perfect backing with no compromises. • Slow movement helps you maintain full control of your vehicle and to correctly judge distances. • Check all sides as you back • Remember that there are 6 sides to your vehicle (back, front, both sides, above and below). • Keep your eyes moving to ensure conditions have not changed. • Use all of your resources and guides • Use a spotter if someone is available. Be sure to keep your spotter in sight at all times. • Make sure your mirrors are clean and in good positions to maximize the view around your vehicle – Know your blind spots! • Roll down your window and listen to the environment around you. • If you are unsure, G.O.A.L. • If you begin backing and become unsure of your surroundings, get out and look again!

YOU, AS THE DRIVER, ARE 100% RESPONSIBLE FOR SAFELY BACKING YOUR VEHICLE • A driver should not and cannot blame a spotter, the vehicle mirrors, or a rearview camera on his/her backing mistakes. • Never rely 100% on anything other than yourself. G.O.A.L – GET OUT AND LOOK.
A little RUSTY at Backing? Here are some tips to remember!
1. Adjust Your Mirrors To See The Trailer 2. Turn From The Bottom Of The Steering Wheel 3. Slow And Steady
4. Turn Off Distractions 5. Use Your Mirrors 6. Avoid Backing Up!

“I have three precious things which I hold fast and prize. The first is gentleness; the second is frugality; the third is humility, which keeps me from putting myself before others. Be gentle and you can be bold; be frugal and you can be generous; avoid putting yourself before others and you can become a leader among men.” –– Lao Tzu.
